                              Shake Up in the Stable
                              by Hammer the WordSmith

TO EVERYTHING there is a season, and a time for every matter or purpose under
heaven: -- Ecclesiastes 3:1 Amplified Bible

Hammer, GrimmDorr and ElGon the Half Elf were gathered together at the Flowered
Gardenz Morya Manor Estate on the Lake with the Sisters of the Sword and some members
of the Dwarfs Militia who had been hand picked by the veteran manager to embark on a
mission led by Venus Trap Hammer along with Black Rose Hammer.
GimLee had finished filling the distribution orders for the appropriate flower
arrangements to be sent to the various stables whose gladiators had been slain, plus
to honor Dodge Bullets and Sons Of Mars for their recent successful blood feuds!
"Things look much improved for my future wagering efforts with the promise of
this new recruit Blood Rose Hammer," ejaculated ElGon as he waved his arms excitedly
as he raved about the prospects of this much better replacement. "Would you not
agree, GrimmDorr?"
The Dwarven Gladiator Trainer scratched his beard thoughtfully and grunted a
half hearted agreement as he set a wary eye towards ElGon and raised an eyebrow
towards his friend Hammer.
The veteran manager merely smiled and nodded his head ever so slightly.
Hammer had more important things on his mind to discuss and was about to address
the issue at hand when his keen ears overheard the beginning of what was about to
explode into a small scale brawl between two of his gladiators.
Soon the gathered party scattered in all directions to make room for the
brawling combatants as Hammer furrowed his brow and studied the unfolding situation
before giving the command for the Dwarfs Militia to seize the two combatants!
"Never Mind Whose Fault This Is!" barked the veteran manager as the surprised
onlookers nervously awaited the fate of the two transgressors. "Both of You Must
Fight in the Dark Arena to Atone for Your Sins of Raising Arms Against Your Fellow
Sister! There is a Time and a Place for You to Fight Amongst Yourselves and This Is
Neither the Time Nor the Place for Such Blatant Infractions of the Sisterhood Rules!"
Briar Stem Hammer and Stink Moss Hammer hung their heads in shame as they
surrendered their bloodied blades to the assigned Dwarfs Militia members who escorted
them into house custody.
Turning to the two Lady Protectors who were witness to this unfortunate incident
Hammer admonished, "Black Rose Hammer, you put on such a pathetic display by Torch
Light a few days ago I hardly think any advice you can give those two will spare
their lives! You have ten minutes to speak to them to prepare your fellow Sisters
for the horror that awaits them!
"Venus Trap Hammer you have thirty minutes to prepare your war party for the
mission that you must embark upon this very day!"
Hammer strode over to the three remaining members of his current Flowered
Hammerz stable and looked them squarely in the eyes as he reached out and grabbed
Thorn Stem Hammer by the arm as gently as his present rage could muster.
"Thorn Stem Hammer Is Now Your Leader!"
The three Sisters gathered around the veteran manager and trembled as they
hugged one another and vowed to do Hammer proud upon the Morya Arena sands!
Hammer softened his countenance and kissed each of his gladiators upon the
forehead as he dismissed them to go train and fulfill their vows to improve their
records upon the sands to restore the winning tradition of the Flowered Hammerz
stable.
Then drawing GrimmDorr and ElGon aside the veteran manager whispered to his
friends, "The Butcher has found a way to transverse the dimensions... so we must all
be prepared to eliminate his minions... should they find their way to Morya!"

"May Your Blades Be Sharp and Your Wits Sharper!"

Gladiators muttered as they concentrated, mantras that had helped them meditate
on the Isle, or curses when their minds wavered and they lost the focus,
encouragement and advice to themselves and each other.
Uncle Wolf's mouth quirked. "They'll do," he said. He turned his full
attention back to the Door they had to close.
Malcorn hadn't heard his comment. He was running his hands up and down through
the air as though feeling along a wall that stood between them and the Doorway and
doing some muttering of his own. He pressed against it with both hands and the full
weight of his big body, snapping out three words that crackled with power. Nothing
visible happened.
The old shaman adjusted his perceptions to "see" the wall. Still no response to
Malcorn's efforts. He sighed. "If it was easy," he muttered, "it would need us to
do it."
Malcorn smiled grimly. "True." He knocked on the wall of air. "I think this
may be more in your line than mine."
Wolf squinted. "Some kind of elemental," he decided. "Air elemental--wind?"
He laid his own hands on the invisible wall. "No, too static. Even when a wind
elemental stays in one place, it moves, spins."
"Then I thank the gods it isn't one. A tornado would do us no good at all,"
Malcorn said.
"Mmm." Wolf shifted his attention, feeling for any chink or facet of identity.
A tornado would have been easier to deal with, because it could have been identified.
Perhaps even torn from the control of whoever was guarding this Gate and then turned
against--
Heat blasted out of the unchanging air. Both men jumped back, and Wolf cursed
softly, blowing on burned fingers. "Heat waves," he gasped. After a moment to get
himself back under full control, he added, "Partly heat waves. Even that should show
motion--"
"It isn't the world we know," Malcorn said. "So it may not follow any of the
rules we know."
Wolf snorted. "Going to teach me to suck eggs, boy? The rules of the world,
no, of course they can't be counted on. But elementals have their own rules, and
unless the entity causing this has the power of a god, the elements must perform
according to their natures."
Malcorn took three long paces to the side, then looked back at the wall on a
slant. "No heat-wave motion," he said. "Not even a ripple." He squinted. "What if
it isn't an elemental, what if it's... a specialized demon of some kind?"
"That would be... tricky." The shaman looked at him. "How can there be
'specialized' demons?"
"I've heard of some breeding experiments." Malcorn shrugged. "The consensus
was that they couldn't possibly succeed, but no one actually knows. And this might
be such an experiment. Half demon, half elemental."
"So what do we do about it?" Wolf put his hands on his hips and glared at the
invisible wall. "I can handle an elemental--probably. A demon, only sometimes."
"If our opponent is being creative, then we must be also." Malcorn frowned. "I
have an idea...."

All five of the gladiators had managed at least some degree of light, but they
were finding it harder than they'd expected, and they hadn't expected it to be easy.
Math op Owain repeated his mantra yet again, trying to get past his embarrassment at
a lack-luster performance. Each of the others *else* was glowing like a lantern, and
he was barely a candle, and a dim one at that.
"Is it my imagination," Necroma asked, "or am I doing especially poorly here?
Maybe because I studied necromancy--"
"You're doing great!" Blackwind said. "It's me that is being a dim--"
"Ah!" Young Joan nodded. "I see it now, each of us can only see outside our
own light--"
"Like trying to see the backs of our own heads," Redfox broke in. "We can see
the light from the others, but not our own. Well, good, I thought I wasn't managing
to do this at all. Thought I was going to let the rest of you down."
Math looked toward the advancing shadows, now advancing more slowly. But they
seemed denser, darker. They even seemed to have a form of sorts, as though they
were... creatures composed entirely of shadow. As though they had substance and were
obstacles that the light was flowing around as water flows around rocks. His hand
tightened on the hilt of his sword, and he forced himself to relax and loosen the
grip; there isn't much you can do if you're gripping so hard your muscles are locked.
A Shadow on the edge of the pack, it was hard to think of them as anything but
creatures now, rushed forward suddenly, elongating. Its shape changed from upright
and vaguely man-like to leaping-wolf to a thick spear--aimed at Blackwind, who was on
the left end of the line the gladiators had formed. The Malcornishman threw himself
down and to the side--to the left, leaving a gap between himself and his companions.
There'd been no other obvious way for him to go, Redfox was too close on his right,
just over arm's length away. But two more Shadows followed the first, toward that
gap, and the one Blackwind had evaded doubled back on itself, returning to a wolf-
like shape that was mostly gaping jaws and fangs like dark daggers.

Near Vithicar:

The spell didn't work. Master Darque resisted the impulse to lash out at the
nearest person, his bodyguard Tyre. To punish the non-responsible for the failure of
a spell was the mark of a minor magician; he would not stoop to that. But it should
have worked. It was such a *basic* scrying spell. He had been using it for
centuries, he could cast the damned thing in his sleep. This failure would have
driven a normal man to cursing, but he was always careful about that. As a half-
demon, his curses had power, and a competent magician did not waste power. Not
unless he was *really* angry.
He knew what the problem was, of course. That idiot down in Kurukar, messing
around with "dark powers." As if any human could hope to control them! Without a
heritage like his own, the powers would eat any fool who tried, and the sooner the
better. Necromancy! Master Darque's lip curled in a sneer. It had its uses, he had
done a little in that line himself, but it was ultimately a minor magical art.
Inherently messy, as anything involving human nature would always be.
He sighed, laid down the wand he had been using, and turned to look at Tyre.
The dwarf was expressionless, pointedly not paying attention to the spell-workings.
"We're going to have to do something about Kurukar," Master Darque said.
Tyre brightened at the prospect of action. "Good! When?"
     "Now."

Blackwind rolled, starting to come back to his feet, but the Shadow was too
fast. As it pounced, its shape became less a wolf, more catlike, and claws like
scimitars extended from its feet. It was too close for sword work, but he had his
dagger in his offhand and struck at it quickly. No time to aim, but he should be
able to make it back off--
The dagger met no resistance, which unbalanced him further, and he rolled again.
The Shadow fastened claws in his arm, his shoulder, raked his ribs. His armor was no
more than wishful thinking against the assault, the claws were needles of deadly
cold. His dagger fell from fingers too cold to keep a grip. How was he supposed to
fight this thing? His arm and shoulder were numb, and he was finding it hard to
breathe.
     The Shadow was pouncing again.
A shout. A horizontal bar of light that swept above him, shattering the Shadow
when it struck. "Light, not steel," Redfox panted. "Can you get up?"
"I think so." Blackwind used his good hand to push himself to his feet, but it
was harder than it should have been. He looked at his ribs and his arm, expecting to
see torn armor soaked with blood. No tearing, no blood. No feeling in his arm.
"They attack with cold...." He shivered.
"Make light," Redfox said again. "That's all that stops them."
Blackwind tried. "Can't concentrate. Too cold...." He blinked, looking
around. The other four gladiators were all glowing, more like blobs of light in the
shadowy valley than physical people. Except that one of them was close to him and
BRIGHT, a pillar-- The Malcornishman reached out his good hand to that light, felt
Redfox grip it. HOT. But the heat was something he could concentrate on. Something
he could use to drive back the shadows.
He focused his mind, invoking light, calling on the warmth of human
companionship, felt warmth and life coming back into himself. Blackwind realized he
had dropped his sword, but he didn't bend down to get it. Wasn't sure he could get
back up again, for one thing, but right now, having the sword wouldn't help anyway.
He and Redfox had become separated from the other three gladiators, but as long
as they stayed together themselves, Blackwind figured they could handle the Shadows.
They had to.

                                      SPY REPORT

Ready for some action-packed adventure, some thrills, chills and spills? Well
fergit it, cause this is the Spyreport for MORYA. The guys at DODGE BULLETS like
really pulled together to get a 4-1-1 this turn, moving up by 4. Cut this out and
put it in your scrapbooks, THE PENTARCHY! 'Cause they got 3-1-0 and moved up to 2nd!
MVP award for LIZARD? FORCE OF FIVE's proud of him after beating WHITE BECT and
getting 18 points. Talk about yer major upsets! POP TARGET's match with GARROT cost
him a loss of 11 points! This Duelmaster is like something else! TEZCATLIPOCA
stopped VALERIAN dead in hers tracks! I hear the top team insists all their warriors
get nine hours sleep. They want photogenic fighters for PR photos.
So just why would someone becomes a warrior anyway? It can't be for these
really neat Spyreports can it? The warriors of FORCE OF FIVE must be getting lonely.
They were the most avoided team. Do you guys know something that I don't? Is there
some deep dark secret why SONS OF MARS' been avoiding FORCE OF FIVE so much? Or is
it just that they're too scared? Can STEEL AND SILK's PYRITE be more popular than
me? He was challenged the most, but is that really the same?
Challenges, revenges, Bloodfeuds. All MORYA ever talks about is fighting! Me,
I'm more laid back. Pinch me, I must be dreaming!!! ANFERROUS returns from the Dark
Arena, maybe a "little upset" at his STEEL AND SILK teammates... Like, who is this
guy??? BRIAR STEM HAMMER gets sent to the Dark Arena, battles HIGH ELF, and returns
to tell of it!!! I bet FLOWERED HAMMERZ manager is surprised! COLGATE SMILE really
fought hard against PUBLIUS CLAUDIUS. That'll teach SONS OF MARS not to go and kill
any of MY GENERATION's guys again, huh! Hey you guys, don't you think your families
would like to hear from you? Write! (Or have someone write for you.)
I really didn't, you know, study when I was a kid. Who would've guessed I'd be
a famous Spyreporter? I'm getting tired of writing this stuff, so I'm calling it
quits. Its been really albendranius! Later, guys-- Debby Tonte
