He turned his head to glance at Lord Malcorn, who was now standing ten feet away from him. "Not quite an elemental, not quite a demon... how big is it? Can we separate and at least one of us get around it while it blocks the other?" Malcorn shrugged. "I don't like us dividing our forces, not even separating out the gladiators to guard our backs, much less each of us moving and acting alone. But if that's what it takes...." He moved a little farther to the side, keeping most of his attention on the invisible entity that blocked their passage toward the Gate of Hell. Wolf resisted the urge to glance over his shoulder at the gladiators. They would do the best they could, and it was even more dangerous for him to divide his attention than his forces. And right now, his attention had to be on this Thing in front of him. The rules governing air elementals in the Nether Realms were clear, and it could not move without becoming visible, and perhaps not even then--so long as he watched it closely. It was his attention that was pinning part of it to this location, just as Malcorn's attention was pinning another part of it farther along. How far could it stretch before Malcorn reached an end of it, or its patience snapped? Air and fire elementals were not noted for their patience. Nor lesser demons, come to that. From the corner of his eye, Wolf saw that Malcorn had stopped moving sideways and was angling forward, toward the Gate. He must have reached a corner. The old shaman bared his teeth in a predator's grin and gathered all his will and knowledge for whatever would happen next. Soon, now. Yes! A visible ripple in the Thing that blocked their path. He hardened his concentration on it. Words like hammer-blows. Malcorn wasn't shouting, but the words rolled out of him like an avalanche. The power behind them-- Most people saw Lord Malcorn as big and slow and friendly, ordinary, and maybe not too bright. They never guessed at this side of the man. He had been born to hold the barrier that protected the normal world from all the Realms Beyond. It was the gift and the responsibility of his lineage, and he did it very well. The Thing rippled again, the visible Gate beyond it dancing as through heat waves, and something... cracked. The demon began to condense out of it. Spidery limbs, fragile-looking iridescent wings, huge, glassy eyes. The kind of demon Wolf's own teach had called a Mirage-Flitter. A natural choice, perhaps, if one wanted to meld a demon with an air elemental, but the Flitter was weak in its own identity. A pest rather than a dire threat. It shrieked, a thin keening at the upper edge of audibility. Sharp as broken glass, but wild--whatever had been done to bind this Flitter to the elemental had driven it mad. More words from Malcorn, surrounded by the crackle and ring of shattering glass. Faintly bluish fluid trickled down the Flitter's wings as it struggled to pull free of the elemental that must have seemed like a prison to it. It shrieked again, flailing with its bleeding wings. Wolf lifted his sword, concentrated his power, and skewered the mad thing through the heart. He was already in motion when he saw the trap that lurked behind/within the Flitter, and it was much too late to stop. starting Near Vithicar: Tyre didn't curse as he trudged along under a heavy pack. Sidon didn't curse, either. But Master Darque could tell they were both thinking about it. He didn't owe them--or anyone else--an explanation. But they'd been with him a long time, were loyal and reliable.... "We can't travel magically because of the disturbance the idiot in Kurukar is creating," he said. "When we get down off the mountain, we might hire horses." Tyre said, "Ah," and Sidon nodded and almost smiled. They resettled their packs and kept walking. And walking. It was a long way down off the mountain, which was one reason why he'd picked that cave system to establish a laboratory in the first place. Close to the nexus of power that was Vithicar, and a long way from anywhere else. Master Darque had a lot of enemies, which was inconvenient but also a mark of his successes. Practically a way of keeping score. He dismissed that idle thought from his mind. What of the Black Kaliv of Kurukar? He needed a plan. The first step would be to assemble all he knew about the man, all he had picked up in bits and minute pieces over the years. Brother to the First Wife of the Satrap of Zuwayza, given the rule of Kurukar at his sister's insistence when the previous kaliv had become incapacitated. Some kind of lingering debility on the previous man's part, and the possibility that it might have been magically induced by his successor was... not something Darque had ever heard suggested. But it might be so, and might be worth considering. Still, not immediately critical. Except that a man who could and would use magic to open a path to power for himself, behavior which seemed to Darque quite... normal, even admirable, had chosen Kurukar. Why? The place was a backwater. A benighted province with a poor climate and no great resources. Why had the Black Kaliv not chosen Aljafir? Or Jurine? Or...? Ah! A very old image emerged from the vaults of his memory. Centuries old, he had been--briefly--studying the magical foundation of Alastari with some Fratsfan. The man's name eluded him but probably didn't matter. What mattered was the map. It had shown the lines of power that criss-crossed the isthmus of Alastari, and though towns and borders, even rivers, had changed, the lines of power, what humans called the "ley lines," would not have done so. Not to any degree that mattered, anyway. And there had been a major node in the area that was now Kurukar. So the Black Kaliv had made that choice for a sound reason. Good to know. There might be a way to turn that knowledge into a weapon, which was something Master Darque excelled at: turning knowledge into weapons. Sorry not to have written more, but I've been sick for the past couple of weeks. -- the Scribe * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===SLOW ARENA NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 8 ARKERS (turn 328): ZITHER of Z GLADIATORS (Z-Man, mgr.) Let's enjoy the free drinks and the glory, but I would like to see here someone worthier than little puny me. Tezcatlipoca SPY REPORT Hail MORYA! Warriors of the arena, prepare to be praised and blamed for your deeds. It seems the training can make the difference, as FORCE OF FIVE is pushed out of top team by MY GENERATION, who came from 6th with a 5-0-0 this turn. Now keep the taverns open late tonight, for there are sorrows to drown for FORCE OF FIVE, whose 2-3-0 this turn dropped them by 6 into 7th. MY GENERATION stable has parlayed this turn's 5-0-0 into a 5 space move up the rankings. This brings them up to 1st place. Good work, guys! The THE PENTARCHY guild has had a 3-1-0 turn and deserves to be watched in the future. You never know where this kind of thing can lead. And let's see, TAXES fought CLOUDRIDER and gained 24 points and contributed to EXPENSE ACCOUNT's 4-1-0. CASCELLA has lost to PYRITE, falling 16 points, while helping make D'HARAN EMPIRE a 2-3-0 turn. Well done, MORYA, the Duelmaster was this turn's most challenged warrior. Perhaps TEZCATLIPOCA is not as thrilled, being challenged 4 times. RENTAL CAR challenged for the Duelmastership this turn, attempting to dethrone THE PENTARCHY's warrior. The attempts to dethrone the Duelmaster have failed, and TEZCATLIPOCA remains MORYA's top warrior for another turn. Tell me, is nothing sacred? I have heard from unimpeachable sources that Arthur's Last Stand uses trolls in their stew. Talk about gristle! Oriental wise man once say, 'Hiding behind shields prevents proper sun tanning.' Inscrutable, but true. SONS OF MARS has cause to stand tall, as they were MORYA's most avoided team. A smart manager knows this is a team to beat. And avoiding SONS OF MARS more than any other team we find FORCE OF FIVE. MORYA, are we going to accept, or respect this sort of thing? In a brave attempt, BOOMERANG from FORCE OF FIVE challenged up 22 points to fight SCARLET from the D'HARAN EMPIRE stable. BOOMERANG perhaps got his just desserts, seeing as he was overcame by SCARLET and ended up with 69 recognition points. The Dark Arena is for those who cannot win, not who cannot lose with grace. Dignity in life or death is the warrior's creed. Congratulations go out to EXPENSE ACCOUNT, with POSTAGE revenging a bloodfeud against NUMIDICUS of SONS OF MARS. Arthur's Last Stand declares a free round for COLGATE SMILE and all of MY GENERATION, for having revenged DODGE BULLETS' GOPHER BROKE for killing one of their comrades. A brave warrior does not carry a red shield, he has nothing to cover or hide when the fight is over. Consider well. I like this place, MORYA, the taverns have old wine, and young serving girls. Who could ask for more? It's been nice chatting with you, until we meet again, keep your swords sharp and your hammers heavy. Until you see my quill in MORYA again, farewell-- Alarond the Scribe DUELMASTER W L K POINTS TEAM NAME TEZCATLIPOCA 4641 17 6 2 130 THE PENTARCHY (397) CHALLENGER CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME PATTE DE SAGUAR 4629 20 9 1 113 THE PENTARCHY (397) SCARLET 4603 17 13 0 103 D'HARAN EMPIRE (513) PYRITE 4698 13 7 0 91 STEEL AND SILK (495) CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME RENTAL CAR 4534 12 11 0 89 EXPENSE ACCOUNT (506) VALERIAN 4732 11 7 0 87 STEEL AND SILK (495) CHANDALEN 4602 9 21 4 80 D'HARAN EMPIRE (513) CASCELLA 4659 13 11 0 69 D'HARAN EMPIRE (513) BOOMERANG 4696 13 4 0 69 FORCE OF FIVE (524) CHALLENGER ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME CINCINNATUS 4706 12 7 0 65 SONS OF MARS (526) JENNSEN 4604 11 19 1 65 D'HARAN EMPIRE (513) WHITE BECT 4645 12 9 0 63 THE PENTARCHY (397) POSTAGE 4750 11 4 1 62 EXPENSE ACCOUNT (506) JUGGERNAUT 4694 11 7 1 61 FORCE OF FIVE (524) TAXES 4795 4 0 0 60 EXPENSE ACCOUNT (506) THORN STEM HAMMER 4500 9 13 1 57 FLOWERED HAMMERZ (481) ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME LIZARD 4693 10 8 0 55 FORCE OF FIVE (524) BRIAR STEM HAMMER 4481 9 16 1 54 FLOWERED HAMMERZ (481) MADELINE 4710 8 13 0 51 DODGE BULLETS (126) SABRETOOTH 4692 11 7 1 47 FORCE OF FIVE (524) PORCUPINE 4717 9 8 0 45 FORCE OF FIVE (524) CLOUDRIDER 4734 12 6 0 42 DODGE BULLETS (126) POISON IVY HAMMER 4543 7 8 0 35 FLOWERED HAMMERZ (481) LILY OF SARMATIA 4775 6 4 0 35 DODGE BULLETS (126) COLGATE SMILE 4812 5 0 0 35 MY GENERATION (533) FUNKY CHICKEN 4816 4 1 0 35 MY GENERATION (533) CHALLENGER INITIATES W L K POINTS TEAM NAME LUCIUS SULLA 4733 6 10 0 28 SONS OF MARS (526) GARROT 4777 2 6 0 25 STEEL AND SILK (495) MARCUS MARCELLUS 4810 4 2 0 24 SONS OF MARS (526) BLOOD ROSE HAMMER 4832 2 0 0 24 FLOWERED HAMMERZ (481) INITIATES W L K POINTS TEAM NAME NUMIDICUS 4818 2 2 1 23 SONS OF MARS (526) THERIAULT 4751 4 9 1 22 D'HARAN EMPIRE (513) ACCRUED INTEREST 4796 2 2 0 18 EXPENSE ACCOUNT (506) PUBLIUS CLAUDIUS 4811 3 3 1 15 SONS OF MARS (526) GOPHER BROKE 4821 2 2 1 14 DODGE BULLETS (126) CAPEX 4833 1 0 0 13 EXPENSE ACCOUNT (506) ROLLERGIRL 4835 1 0 0 11 MY GENERATION (533) WILD DAISY HAMMER 4836 1 0 0 11 FLOWERED HAMMERZ (481) I'M JUST A BILL 4815 1 0 0 9 MY GENERATION (533) POP TARGET 4817 1 4 0 7 DODGE BULLETS (126) HONG KONG FOOEY 4834 1 0 0 6 MY GENERATION (533) -TORDEK 4806 1 1 0 4 JESTER CROWD (532) AHRIMAN 4545 0 1 0 1 THE DEATH LORDS (507) INITIATES W L K POINTS TEAM NAME -GWYNN 4804 0 1 0 1 JESTER CROWD (532) SAMEDI 4548 0 1 0 1 THE DEATH LORDS (507) -ROSLYNN 4803 0 1 0 1 JESTER CROWD (532) YAMA 4544 0 1 0 1 THE DEATH LORDS (507) DRUJ NASU 4547 0 1 0 1 THE DEATH LORDS (507) YAN LO 4546 0 1 0 1 THE DEATH LORDS (507) '-' denotes a warrior who did not fight this turn. Our next winter FTF will be held in Tempe, Arizona, January 14-16, 2011. It will be held at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Tempe, Arizona (480-894-7444), the same hotel as last year by popular request. Room rates are $129.00 per night, 1-2 occupancy, which includes full cooked breakfast, complimentary manager's reception (yes, really!), free airport shuttle, free parking and free high speed internet. There's a fitness center, jacuzzi, and pool. The rooms are blocked--please make your reservation by December 22 before the block is released! (This is prime season for Phoenix, and people have been unable to book rooms because they waited too long.) Look for the tournament info sheet and minioverviews some time in December. We hope you're all looking forward to it and that we will see you there!
