                                 DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
                             Notes from the arena champ.

Well, I pulled it off through Brute FE, but now I've got to go. *sigh* Funny
thing is, I'm the least skilled of Michael's grads but the only one to hold the
throne for more than one turn--consecutive or not.
I took down Taxes like a striker, but considering my slightly odd review,
Michael asked me to point out my faves:

     * Short Spear
     * Defensive skills
     * Low offensive (what?!)
     * High activity

I'm 21-5(7)-8-11(13)-17(19)-15(17)-7(9) with Great endurance and damage. I
scraped by with an AdEx in attack and an Ex in initiative.
I'm not likely to see a lot of action on the Isle, so let me thank you all for
the great competition, and here's to the next Duelmaster!

                                          -- Pyrite

                                      SPY REPORT

It's me, The Unknown Spymaster here with my bag to give you the news on last
week's fights. For every winner there is a loser. Speaking of losers, lets take a
look at BIZARRO SQUAD, who went down to 6th from 10th. Life is tough. Coming up
with a solid 3-2-0 outing, THE DEATH LORDS has advanced 6 places in the rankings.
Hey everybody, watch out for MADELINE, who flew up 15 points in the rankings after
mashing FUNKY CHICKEN like a melon. Keep your eye on this gal. And falling like a
basher in the top ten was AHRIMAN, who dropped 12 points after a disappointing (to
say the least) bout with SPIDER. Well here's a duelmaster that doesn't sit back and
say 'Challenge me'! PYRITE made a Dark Arena Challenge against MOUNTAIN TROLL this
week. The crowds were amazed this turn, as MOUNTAIN TROLL killed the Duelmaster,
PYRITE, leaving STEEL AND SILK in mourning. 4 out of 5 gladiators surveyed protect
the body, so try and avoid aiming at that location.
Here is other news that is of note. Here's a song for you: Who's afraid of the
big, bad THE PENTARCHY? Big bad THE PENTARCHY. Big bad THE PENTARCHY. MORYA's
afraid of the big bad THE PENTARCHY. Tra la la la la! And you guys like to boo me?
Well, unsling your rasberries, cause THE DEATH LORDS beats feet every time THE
PENTARCHY smiles at them. Try farming, eh? Well dang howdy, but if challenges were
votes, MR BOOK would be president. Although it may be a contest he doesn't want to
win. Well, it looks like GARROT wasn't happy with last turn's rank, so he went for
broke by challenging up 26 points. No guts, no glory. This week GARROT 7-14-0
fought POSTAGE 20-9-1 and in losing gained 2 points. I know several gladiators who
could go for a few fights like that. In a mismatch, our friend HADES of THE DEATH
LORDS got heroic notions and challenged POP TARGET. What did it get him? A 6-2-0
record, that's what. I heard HADES laughed all the way to the inn as his new point
total of 54 was posted in the arena. I guess beating POP TARGET really pays!
Being a spy is great--other people die and you spend the rest of the day
drinking to their memory. Better tanked than dead! Here's some advice: warriors
with little wit and will may encounter problems on the trail to the Isle.
Well, there's the manager of the MORYA giving me the 'cut' sign (or is that
'They're going to strangle you in the alley?). Well, there goes another Spy Report.
Good luck in next week's fights. Its been fun, and I'm sure you enjoyed it (boos).
Now that I've got you worked up for Snide Clemens, I'll be leaving-- The Unknown
Spymaster

Pyrite -- A hot Duelmaster and Lord Protector! Kudos! -- Finance Manager
P.S. I guess he WAS DM material, Michael.

The Pentarchy with a fine 4-0! Going to be a force in Tempe. -- Finance Manager

I'm Just A Bill from My Generation -- I keep thinking you are one of my expense
accounts. Love the name. -- Finance Manager

Charlie Rankin -- Loved Bizarro's, especially the half-price drinks. We all need to
spend less these days. Nice place; glad to have it in Morya. -- Finance Manager

Kali -- That seemed to be quite an unfair experience match up the MUGS gave you, but
I must admit I needed the win. Luck at you henceforth. -- Capex

Pyrite -- I bow to a better champion. -- Taxes
P.S. Watch out in the future as I am sicking the auditors on you!

XI Crystal -- Nothing personal, you know. You were there. You were a style I
thought I had a chance with. You had more experience so should teach me well. As it
is, I won. Thankfully. (for me) -- Software

Garrot -- Thanks for the challenge and the long, slow dance. You can tap in on me
anytime. (wink) -- Postage (Which is going to get slower in the Spring.)

Happy New Year to all. May 2012 be an enjoyable and profitable year for each and
every one of you. -- Finance Manager

Sunet -- You fought well and thaught me a new trick or two. Perhaps next time we
dance you can borrow my weapon. -- Hades

Vrtoglava -- You are a stern teacher. I don't know if I can handle another lesson
like that. -- Ahriman

Bottle Boy -- Your days are numbered, Shew. One of my brothers will be coming to cut
you down to size. -- Yan Lo

Capex -- Talk about a rotten draw! Next time we meet I'll snap that quarterstaff in
two and beat YOU over the head with it. -- Kali

Bill -- I'be been waiting for my rematch for almost a full year. YOu scum can cower
behind your shields and heavy armor, but even the toughest nuts can be cracked with a
big hammer. -- Druj Nasu

Autumn Leaves -- Slow down? Hmmm, perhaps you are right. Thanks, but I think I'm
gonna stick to tending my pub. It was a nasty loss that Brz fellow dealt me. Don't
know if'n I dhouls call him fellow, some kind of cat man that one is, a bit smelly
too. -- Count Bizaro

Bronchite -- Man, I though I had that one won. Great fight man, you handed my first
defeat. Oh yeah, by the way I challenged you this week, so we'll see how that goes.
Until then, you're a Dwarf and I like to drink so how about an ale. Come on, first
round's on me. -- Todd Mayes

Boudicca -- I have reason to believe you are using performance enhancing spells. You
drop me with one swing of your war hammer, and the size of you is ungodly. -- Lady
Bizaro

Autumn Leaves -- Ha ha, too right. *smiling* Though I don't agree with the soaking
in cold water, I've always preferred the squeezing method. Practice will help most

anyone, still I'm always looking for the ones who are just born with it. You seem
like a hard worker, if ever you find yourself out of a job with Jorja, come talk to
me. -- Charlie Rankin

Bizarro Squad -- Thanks for the donation of gold to help with Eden's Rose GArden. If
you're inclined to send a diplo sometime feel free to do so. I generally like
receiving diplos. -- Aesir Vanir, mgr Isis Ptah

Postage -- Gah! Next time I bring the hammer and chisel. If that doesn't do it,
just engrave my epitaph and let me die. -- Garrot

Funky Chicken -- I moved fast. I struck true. I got squashed. *sigh* Hate when
that happens. -- Spider

Hong Kong Fooey -- Okay, I was wrong. THAT was more painful. *wince* -- B. Mors
P.S. I'm a woman pop, so I ain't your son. *smirk*

Shupalt -- Yeah, a little on the cheap side, but it made for a nice long dance, eh?
-- A. Karenia

Taxes -- No more taxes! Woohoo! -- Pyrite, off to the Isle

All -- Hard to believe that we're already heading into a new year! Looks like my
team gets a fifth kill if Pyrite wins next turn, and I'm proud to say Steel and
Silk's warriors have still never killed another manager's warrior. Alright, time to
go. Hope everyone made the most of the holidays! -- Michael Eldritch

A warm welcome to Mayhem's Minions. Steer clear of a low flying trees. -- The Mad
Prophet

All -- Good tidings to all of Morya! I was hired to keep organization among these
ranks. May the Gods help you divide these minions. -- Mgr. Mayhem

All -- As a boy growing up, I've always dreamed of being DM someday! -- Gee

All -- I say Chances make Champions, who is next? -- Key

All -- I am new to the arena. Any good gossip? -- Alexis

All -- Get half off at Bizarro's, then meet me outside! -- Toby

All -- Looking for a few good men... to feed my horses! -- Artelia

Happy New Year!! I took some holidays far from my mailbox, so I could miss this
turn, but Ill be back next month! -- Le Pentarque

Congrats, Pyrite!

We congratulate Pyrite and salute the tourney participants, all in one personal.
It's the economy, we just don't have enough electrons to go around. -- Jorja and the
Dodge Bullets band

Aesir Vanir -- Got your diplo. I *hope* the Commission is forwarding you some
further information. As to the handbooks mentioned in the article, well, it was an
old article. Ten years? Twelve? Something like that. The managers who produced
the handbooks back then are mostly no longer active, and for those handbooks of which
I have copies, I lack the time and resources to produce MORE copies and send 'em on.
Sorry, but I just can't do it. What I can and will do is recommend, as strongly as
possible, that if you are still qualified as a "new manager" (I think the Commission
would agree to this but don't know for sure), put a team in dm 93, Noblish Island.
Noblish Island was intended, designed, and is run to show new managers a little of
what they can do. A collection of ten consecutive Noblish Island newsletters is a
fair handbook in itself. -- Jorja
P.S. If you don't qualify as a new manager, get a friend to sign up for Noblish
Island and copy his newsletters.

Charlie Rankin -- Well, if you ANNOUNCE your arrival, what else can I do but welcome
you? People and teams who don't announce themselves I sometimes don't even NOTICE
until they've been here a while. Sometimes it's all a blur for months. -- Jorja

Garrot -- It's okay, you can go ahead and hang on till you lose. I don't mind.
Where I come from a woman who hasn't killed a man (Jorja frowns on that,
unfortunately, and won't let me head-hunt) isn't allowed to marry. And while I have
no spouse in mind at the moment, well, there's nothing wrong with being prepared. --
Lily of Sarmatia

To defeat a Khalhums Dwarf is good. We don't "go" for dwarves back home. They
usually mean trouble. -- Lily of Sarmatia
P.S. And they always fall off their horses, which is just ridiculous.

Call of the Sea -- Ah, let's get it straight here: are you the call of a sea such as
the Storm and Trier, which are actually lakes, or of the true salty ocean which is so
far away I don't think anyone here could HEAR a call from it? -- Madeline

Sirdar -- Wow, a three-shotter! Cool. -- Gopher Broke

Shaka Zulu -- Looks to me like the handicapper might be against you, son. -- Pop
Target
P.S. The handicappers who set up the random matches aren't SUPPOSED to bet on the
fights, but some do.

Teddy Bear -- I never liked your kind. Beady-eyed, smirking.... -- Autumn Leaves

                                NAME CHANGE-O-RAMA

The crowd was surprisingly orderly, but it was still a crowd, and the Commission
clerk, Algernon, looked at it uneasily. Whenever this many people came together to
petition for something, it meant trouble. For him, anyway. Records to be altered.
Altering records was Bad. It made Extra Work.
His assistant clerk leaned close and whispered, "If it weren't for gladiators, we
wouldn't have jobs. Smile at them and ask what they want."
Algernon closed his eyes briefly. Looking at this crowd made him dizzy. They
were all wearing black and white stripes. Like a herd of zebras, except that zebras
didn't carry swords. Then he took a deep breath and managed a smile. "What... ah,
what can I do for you?"
"We want new names," the first gladiator said. There was a number on the front
of his shirt: 0381. He thumped the number with his thumb. "This here isn't a
name--"
"We want REAL names!" That voice came from farther back in the crowd.
"Yeah! We've paid our dues," another shouted, "and we've EARNED real names!"
One from the very back yelled, "I want to be called Tom."
All the others turned to look at him.
Algernon couldn't see him, but apparently those looks were accusing. Well, he
could understand that, "Tom" was such a... common name.
"My mom called me Tom," the voice in the back protested. "It's a good name."
"It isn't the name you put on the petition," 0381 said. "We talked about this.
We got our manager's agreement. You get the name on the petition."
     "But--!"
Algernon didn't really want to keep staring at all these stripes while they
argued. He picked up the petition. "These names are the ones you want?"
     0381 turned back. "Yes."
"It's a lot of trouble, and when other people see that YOU are getting name
changes, THEY are going to want them--" Seeing the gladiators beginning to frown...
and finger their weapons, he went on quickly, "So I figure we might as well make it a
complete deal. A Name-Change-O-Rama. Everyone who wants a name change can petition
for it. Get it all over with at once." He glanced at the petition, shuddered
slightly, and passed it to his clerk. "We'll announce it, proclaim it, even, and you
will get the names on this petition. And others will get the names THEY think they
should have had, too." He paused. "And I think I'll get a new name, I'm tired of
being an Algernon...."

                              "DARK ARENA" -- The Novel

For centuries, the Shagornan Elves have been forced to live underground.
Human invaders, the Delarquans, burned their forests, sparking a war of elven
annihilation. The elders told tales that when the Delarquans marched to war
against the elves, the land itself bled as they passed. Since the war, the
elves have dwindled with every passing year, while the humans multiply like
rodents across the land of Alastari.

Now, the Delarquans have disappeared. Some say they departed, others indicate
it.s a ruse, but there have been whispered rumors of another greater threat
looming in the region. Khyron of the Shagornan Elves has been tasked to
determine the cause, realizing that failure is probable and at the end of the
road death could be the only reward.

Khyron has known only the safety of the caves, but now he must journey to the
world above...the World with No Ceiling.

Throughout the years, many fine writers have played Duelmasters/Duel II and have
contributed greatly to the history and background of the world of Alastari. One very
intense period, during the early '90's, was during the Rocanis War, when authors from
both the Delarquan and Free Blades arenas collaborated on writing the history of the
invasion of the arena-city of Rocanis. Mark Manley (aka Grimwood) is a long-time
manager in Rocanis, and was one of the writers who contributed so much to this
history. Over the subsequent years, he has worked to bring his novelization to life
and make the story of the War and the preceding events which led to it available to
the greater public. Many Rocanis legends appear in the book: Itoz Trollbane,
Sandstorm, and others. The novel is a treat to read--even more so if you are familiar
with the game!
