TEAM SPOTLIGHT
Longshot sat in his study in the Lord of Discipline's guild house. The sober
room was big and filled with book shelves crammed with books. It didn't matter about
the topic, if it caught his eye; the book got a new home. Most were fiction but they
were slowly being taken over by historical books and biographies. On the huge
mahogany desk that he sat behind was a copy of Basics of the Parry Strike by Taarna
Warblade. To be honest, Taarna wasn't that good of a warrior. Her final record was
1-5-1 before she retired. But what she lacked in skill was made up in her ability to
write. The principles and theories that she proposed were sound. Longshot was
impressed with her arguments on tactics as well. If she was that good in the arena,
he wouldn't have disbanded the team.
He had sent Psych to get Rebecca because he has news for her that he hopes will
improve her mood. Ever since Salina was slain, she had been locked in her room
mourning and refused to come out to eat or practice. That is when everyone knew it
was serious. She never missed practice. Koroshiya had left plates of food at her
bedroom door, but they just sat there untouched. After three days, he finally gave
up and suggested that they let her mourning run its course.
Soon there was a knock at the door to the study. Longshot stood up behind his
desk. He held a piece of parchment in his hand.
"I want you guys to go in the side room and wait until I tell her. Then I will
knock. That is when you come out." There were whispered voices of agreement and the
sound of feet walking to a side room and the door being pulled shut.
"Come in." Longshot said. He still played with the piece of parchment in his
hand. The door opened and in walked Rebecca. Her eyes were red and swollen. It was
easy to tell that she had been crying. She was wearing regular clothes; a dark blue
shirt and red pants. Her soft black boots stopped just at her ankles. Her long
black hair wasn't in the usual French braid she loves to wear. It was free and
hanging down past her shoulder blades. Psych stood just behind her in the door way.
He didn't know what was going on, but you could read the concern on his face.
Longshot only wondered what personality was showing concern.
"Perhaps you would like to explain this." Longshot handed the piece of
parchment to Rebecca.
Rebecca began to read the words on the parchment out loud, "Hail the Influencer,
gladiator of Morya..."
As she read, Longshot couldn't hold back his smile any longer. He could see
that she began to realize what was in her hand.
"Do you mean?"
He nodded. "You made it. You're going to the Isle."
As much as she had been mourning, you would not think that Rebecca had tears to
spare. But the tears began again. But this time they were of joy. She crumpled to
her knees. The whole time she held the invite. She whispered the words, 'We did it,
Domi. We did it', over and over. Psych only stood looking at her. He had a puzzled
look on his face as if he still hadn't understood what was happening.
Longshot, walked around the desk. He placed one of his hands on Rebecca's
shoulder. "Get up now. No one should see you like this."
Rebecca looked up at him, nodded, and then stood. She wiped the tears away with
the back of her hand. "Psych doesn't mind that I am crying." She said with a sniff.
"I don't think they would either. But you'd hate me if I let them see you like
that." Three sharp raps sounded on the desk and the door to the side room that
Longshot used as sleeping quarters opened. Out stepped a half elf and a human. The
human had black hair that was cut close to the scalp. He stood behind the half elf
with his arms folded and a grimace on his face. It was hard to tell what he was
displeased about. Perhaps it was the fact that he was barely taller that the half
elf. But whatever it was, it was on his bad side and wasn't getting off it anytime
soon. The angry man's dark eyes seemed to be sizing up everyone in the room. He
wore black riding leather and had a mace at his hip. The head of it was a polished
metal with golden studs all around. The head also looked slightly bigger than a
normal mace. It looked heavy and unwieldy, but it didn't seem to weigh him down. No
wonder. His arms could pass for thighs on some people.
The half elf had long blonde hair that was so yellow, it could pass for gold.
It hung in thin strands that stopped just below his shoulders. The smile on his face
was reflected in his icy blue eyes. He, like his human companion, wore black riding
leather. The color brought out the paleness of his skin. He had an elaborately
decorated red scabbard holding his short sword at his hip. The scabbard was trimmed
in gold and appeared to be a carving of a stag running through the forest. The half
elf held his arms out wide as if preparing to receive a hug. He wasn't disappointed.
Rebecca ran and threw one of her arms around his neck. The other sought out the grim
human and pulled him closer. He never unfolded his arms. Briefly, a smile slipped
through the grim facade and he stepped closer to let her hug him as well.
"They asked permission to deliver the message to you. We all know how important
it is.... Especially to you." Longshot said. "You should feel proud. I don't think
too many new graduates get an armed escort of lord protectors."
Rebecca finally let the two of them go and stood back. "Frenzy... Fascist... I
can't believe you delivered this to me. I don't know what to say."
"How about 'let's get an ale'." The human, Fascist Bully Boy, said. "The roads
are dry and dusty this time of year."
The first day that Alric, his real name, signed up for the team Longshot thought
of the name. When Longshot explained to Alric what fascist meant in his language, he
fell in love with it. It got so bad, he wouldn't answer to any other name.
"Should we tell the others that there will be a celebration?" Psych asked.
Everyone had forgotten that he was in the room. Fascist walked over and looked Psych
from head to toe. He then turned to Longshot.
"You still have this freak around? I thought you had got rid of him a long time
ago." Fascist asked. He spoke as if Psych wasn't in the room. Psych simply looked
at him with a slight tilt to his head. The same way a dog would at something odd.
"We would appreciate it if you wouldn't talk as if we aren't in the room.
**Yes, I know he is a jerk. But we have to be civil. He is our stable mate, after
all.**"
"Great! He is doing it again."
To be honest, Fascist never had to deal with Psych that much. When Fascist was
heading to the Isle, Psych was recruited. The few weeks he did spend with Psych were
more than enough. The others were sympathetic to the troubled young man. But
Fascist only saw the chance to harass him. It has never stopped.
"Don't let Alric get you, Laurence." The half-elf said with a smile. He rests
his hand on the shoulder of Psych. "It's his weird way of showing that he loves
you." The half-elf's laughter sounded like music. It was so light. Psych had
always liked to hear him laugh.
"But..." Now the half-elf's voice became serious. "I saw your last fight. You
should have won that one. When I was your level, I was taking out strikers and
lungers in one minute. I will show you some of my techniques. There is nothing like
the expression on the face of an opponent as they look up at you from the sands and
try to figure out what just happened." The laugh came again. This time Psych
smiled.
Frenzy led his friend out the door, the whole time talking about his plans for
him. "I want to see you on the Isle in ten to twelve turns tops!"
"Wonderful." Fascist said while rolling his eyes.
They all headed down to the pub to celebrate. Tonight they would enjoy
themselves. Tomorrow, they will begin training to avenge Salina. If Longshot had
his way, Mercury's head would be on a spike after the next turn games.

DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
So, this is my last Duel mistress column. Monuntial will always be my home. I
cannot deny my love for the city. But Morya has been a nice alternative during my
short stay here. I look at this event with mixed emotions. I am happy to finally
achieve my goal that I set out to do, but I wish Salina was around to help me
celebrate. I know a lot of you made fun of her. Yes, she did have terrible hygiene.
But she had become a good friend. In some ways, she reminded me of my little sister,
Domi. It is aggravating that she was killed by someone sandbagging.
Speaking of sandbaggers; the warriors of Morya owe Mercury a debt of gratitude.
If he did not slay Salina, she would dominate this arena. I have no doubt about
that. She only had seven fights under her belt and she had already mastered a skill.
She was even beating Mercury and had him ready to give up. But all it takes is one
lucky parry. She will be avenged.
I would like to extend a welcome to the Ninja and the Shewish Snacks stable. I
wish I could have crossed blades with you. Perhaps we will meet on the Isle. Maybe
I will have figured out this friggin' battle axe by then.
Capex, my worthy opponent! Thanks for another win. I have to ask you this, why
do you smile so much when I hit you? Do you like that? You just got creepier to me.
It looks like the top two contenders are Funky Chicken and Pop Target. Either
one would make a great duel master. Good luck to both of you. Speaking of the top
tier, I love that almost all the fighting styles are present in the 'Top Warrior of
Each style' list. All we need are parry riposte and wall of steel styles. Maybe the
wall of steel position will be filled in two turns. We did have a decent parry
riposte, but Tank couldn't control himself. I really hope that my replacement is a
parry-strike. We need more of that style.
Eye bags, you are still too arrogant. But it is hilarious watching you thrash
Tank around the arena. Two rounds of being beat like a dusty rug must really damage
the ego. Maybe Eye Bags would stop if Tank just gave up and let him have his lunch
money? On second thought, keep it up. There is too much joy on Eye Bag's face as he
slices and dices Tank. Okay, I am off to finish packing and then it is on to the
Isle. It's been real, Morya.

SPY REPORT
Much has changed in MORYA since last I was here. Never fear, Olaf Modeen adapts
to many situations, as do all successful fighters. Phhbltt! Too much drinking and
too little dodging gave THE WOLF PACK a 0-0-0! I got a good laugh out of it! What's
with TALISMAN? He actually beat DODGE BULLETS' LILY OF SARMATIA, and walked away
with 24 more points from the fight. Major screwup at DODGE BULLETS. POP TARGET lost
12 points to CAPEX. Some new strategies, perhaps? Maybe POP TARGET will provide
more easy wins... MORYA has a Duelmaster who doesn't sit back and get lazy. She
Bloodfeuded ZODIAC's MERCURY (7-8-1), which should prove (ahem!) interesting. Try as
he might, MERCURY wasn't good enough at persuading THE INFLUENCER to step down from
the Duelmaster's throne... Wouldn't it be nice to have live subjects to practice on?
I hear some team is looking into the uses of convicted prisoners.
If at first you don't succeed, avoid. That'll get you in the Spyreports. MORYA
thinks THE WOLF PACK and their 23-25-1 is too much! If at first you don't succeed,
give up... In my day, no team with a 23-25-1 would scare me off! What's the
problem, LORD OF DISCIPLINE? How well I know the feeling of being the most
challenged warrior, POP TARGET! Don't make idle boasts, they may come back to haunt
you.
Warriors of MORYA unite. You have only your games to lose! MERCURY larned his
lesson (THE INFLUENCER taught it well), and we right likely won't be seein' 'im fight
any LORD OF DISCIPLINE members with the same gusto. Is it my imagination, or are
fighters getting younger every day? To die so young, so gloriously!
Many other cities have retirement homes for aged warriors. Any plans here? The
end of another Spyreport! That's cause for celebration in my book! I don't want to
