The dead whined and shrieked as they were herded back to the domain of Ahringol.
Their grief and frustration could be heard for miles in the strange realm of the
dead. Their lamentations filled the deadly silence of the craggy wind swept
landscape. Overhead, large black birds of some unknown origin flew. One perched
itself on the branch of a tree that look like old black stone. Its red eyes watching
the new arrivals being led like cattle through the gates of the city. Some of them
pushed against Ahringol's guards and tried to force their way back to the portal that
would allow their souls to return to the realm of the living and in turn allow them
to find their bodies. But little did they know that it was not that easy. Ahringol,
in his wisdom, had placed guardians at the portal. Not the guards that were commonly
seen around the cities in the realm or at Ahringol's side, but invisible, sibilant
guardians who had no problem with ripping the prodigal souls to shreds. They were
some of the cruelest creatures to walk this plain. They took great joy in capturing
the escapees and slowly ripping them apart. Ever new entrant to Ahringol's realm is
warned to avoid any attempts to escape because that the victims feel the agony for an
eternity. A few have tried to take a chance with the creatures. Their cries can be
heard at times coming from the wastelands where they wander.
Salina sat on a terrace of her dormitory watching the parade of dead. It had
become an old habit for her to sit and watch. She never recognized anyone. The odds
were too high that this would ever happen. But it was something to do. Unless
something drastic happened, the new arrivals will be herded to the square with the
old dry fountain in it. There they will have another handler usher them away to
various sections of the massive city. The new dead looked confused. As if they
still couldn't believe that they were dead. Perhaps they thought they were going to
wake up in their beds in their guild houses. Their lives would be carrying on and it
would be business as usual. Ironically, some of the new dead had passed during the
tourney of the dead; the tourney where warriors living and deceased fought for simple
vials of life. To the living, the prize would be immortality. The prize that all
lord protectors enjoyed through the grace of Lady Greywand. But to the dead, the
prize was more important. It allowed them to leave this cold wasteland and finally
walk amongst their friends, families, and loves. Several had tried to win their
lives back only to be smashed down like fragile porcelain figurines. Salina had been
one of those hopefuls. She had given it her all, but she was smashed just as badly
as so many others.
She hadn't realized how many of Longshot's warriors were in Ahringol's realm.
It was easily a score of them walking the land of the dead. Some had given up on
their manager ever coming back for them. Those that he could manage to call up
gladly answered, and they too were smashed. It broke his heart all over again
watching them having to shamble back to the land of the dead. Longshot wasn't a
crier, but Salina could swear she saw a tear welling up in his eyes. He had tried
and he had failed. His battle cry "Let justice be done!" had changed. He called out
to them "Justice will be done!" as his dead walked away. They all turned and smiled.
It must have looked like a grotesque display to others watching. Ahringol found
amusement in letting the bodies of the gladiators still show their decomposition.
Their once proud bodies looking like piles of rotting flesh, or in some cases
mummified skeletons shambling along with the others.
As Salina looked at the new arrivals, she spotted someone. She had to do a
double take to make sure her dead eyes were not deceiving her. She stood and ran out
of the door to her home, down a flight of stairs and out into the mass of new
arrivals. She pushed her way through the crowds and grabbed the person by the
shoulder. He spun around quickly and when he saw her, his eye grew as big as
saucers.
"Mercury!" she cried, "What are you doing here?"
The Karragitan pushed Salina's hand away from him, turned and continued to walk.
But she would not be assuaged. Salina followed the swamp dweller until they got to
the square. Several wandered off into the massive city of the dead. They didn't
have a place to go, but they knew they felt the need to move on. There were some who
latched onto a black robed handler like a child. They didn't anything else to do.
Mercury looked off into the distance where the others continued to wander and then
back to the black robed, pale faced handlers who were herding more and more of the
dead. That is when Salina grabbed Mercury again. But this time, she did not let go.
Mercury pushed and shoved at her while trying to get her away from him. But somehow,
Salina held on. Mercury finally answered her.
"What do you think I am doing here? This isn't the top choice for a holiday. I
was killed in combat. Are you happy now? Did you need to hear it to gloat?"
The truth was that Salina did want to gloat. Mercury was the reason she was
here. Their match was going in her favor. Four hits and Salina knew she was going
to win. And then Mercury did his signature parry, riposte, and strike. Despite it
taking her four hits and nothing happened, it only took two quick hits for him to put
her down. One long sword to the side of the head and another to the throat sent her
on her way. At least it was fast. At least she didn't feel anything. At least that
was what she told herself when she first arrived in Ahringol's realm.
"Who did it?" Salina asked, "Who killed you? Was it Capex? Funky Chicken?
Lily?"
Then a thought came. "Was it Rebecca?"
Mercury looked at Salina as if she was an idiot. Then he remembered she was
here and didn't know that the Influencer was on the Isle. So, he filled her in on
what had happened after she expired. He told her how Funky Chicken had gone inactive
and how Lily of Sarmatia, Capex, and the Influencer were on the Isle. Salina looked
a bit sad when she learned that Rebecca to her invite on the same turn that she died.
And for the briefest of moments, Mercury relished that sadness. He then felt a
twinge of guilt. He knew the two were close friends and Salina would have loved to
see her friend graduate. To make up for his behavior, Mercury then told her how the
Influencer had avenged her death. He also told her of how she had tried to kill him.
The influencer would have succeeded too if not for the arenamaster calling the fight.
The Influencer was so angry that she had taken off her helmet and thrown it at the
arenamaster.
This caused Salina to laugh. She had never known Rebecca to lose her cool. Not
like that. Mercury continued catching her up on what happened when he told her how
he beat Psycho Dad, again. And how he grew bolder and challenged Koroshiya and beat
him as well. All during a blood feud. Salina seemed genuinely impressed.
"So, you really are good. Now I don't feel so bad about you killing me."
The two laughed. But Mercury never answered Salina's question. She asked
again. The Karragitan looked at Salina and told her he died in a title fight.
     "Who is duelmaster?" Salina asked.
     "Koroshiya." he sheepishly replied.
This news caused Salina's jaw to drop.
     "Ichi is duelmaster?"
Mercury nodded. The young girl could feel her knees tremble. She wanted to lie
down. The homesick feelings that plagued Salina when she first arrived began all
over again. She should be there to witness her friends' fortunes. Salina thanked
Mercury for the news and turned to go back to her dormitory. Salina made a vow to
try harder during the next tourney of the dead. She would walk the land of the
living again and she would spend time with those that had treated her like family.
She immediately got a nagging thought that it would never happen. She immediately
pushed the thought to the back of her mind. She had to do it because, despite not
being tormented by demons like the lost souls of others, she was still in torment.

                                 DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
                             Notes from the arena champ.

Greetings. So, let's not ignore the elephant in the room. Mercury was slain by
my hands. I have no problem killing one of the fillers. There are even some
regulars who I have no problem with. I honestly didn't want to slay him though. I
want to stay duelmaster for a few turns, learn tons of skills, and go to the Isle.
Yes, I wanted to best Mercury at least once in that time. He has been a thorn in my
side for a while now. But one win would have been enough for me. I guess, in a way,
it was.
I see that the Expense Account stable was the most avoided team last turn. That
is no surprise. They are good. Really good. They and the Lords have crossed blades
quite a few times over the past eighteen months. So, it makes perfect sense to let
your warriors take a break from getting beat. Speaking of impressive teams, I see
the Wolf Pack is making rumblings in the arena again. And to top it off, Tank seems
to be on the move. Hmmmm... Tank versus Travel or Tank versus Hub Capp.... That
would be a fantastic match to watch.
Travel, thank you for the kind words. You will be here again. You have great
skill. I still want to see you and Tank have a duel. I wonder if the Finance
Manager will make you sit out this turn too? Without you, my only choices are Anne
Tenna or Freddy Fender. Come on, Pop Target. Throw a wrench in the works and
challenge Anne Tenna or Freddy Fender.
Okay, I am off. I have some poetry that I have wanted to read for a while now.
You have not experienced he finer things in life until you have read ancient
Frafrejan poetry. **Sigh** Okay, I am off to my tea and reading.

I hurt with cruelty those who would damage me.

Koroshiya Ichi

                                      SPY REPORT

Hail MORYA! Warriors of the arena, prepare to be praised and blamed for your
deeds. And let's see, SLINGER fought PERSISTENT BEGGAR and gained 16 points and
contributed to DODGE BULLETS' 3-2-1. KEIGHAN has lost to MONGO CRUSH, falling 12
points, while helping make THE WOLF PACK a 1-3-0 turn. And all eyes were on FREDDY
FENDER this turn as he ascended to the throne of Duelmaster. MORYA has a new victor!
By the way, was that our Duelmaster that I saw last night, cramped under the table at
Salty's Chowder House?
The crowd's roar, the smell of iron and leather, mixed with sweat, what more
could a warrior ask of life? Well, besides that. I also notice that the EXPENSE
ACCOUNT stable was the most avoided team this turn. Come on MORYA, what are you
afraid of? And avoiding EXPENSE ACCOUNT more than any other team we find OTTO'S
MECHANICS. MORYA, are we going to accept, or respect this sort of thing? Well,
sports fans, take notice that TANK from THE WOLF PACK was MORYA's most challenged
warrior this turn. WATER RAT of LORD OF DISCIPLINE had better have a good reason for
challenging down 14 points in a challenge which he won. I thought WATER RAT showed
great skill and promise when he won victory over TANK. All right, so I slept through
it! Big deal!
We only live a short time in this world, so why not take a sharp blade, and
shave it close? Is it really true that MORYA has more dishwashers per capita that
fighters? Just thought I'd ask...
Remember, blood on the purple robe does not change it from a purple robe. Dare
to fight bravely. Well, I'm burning daylight here in MORYA and I've a long road
ahead of me. Happy Trails. Until the sun next rises and my pen sets to paper--

Taking a break. Funding has not yet been approved and we are budget maxed. Later.
-- Finance Manager and The Expense Accounts

Pop Target -- Next time, I think I prefer to face a Baby Target rather than getting
popped again. -- Hub Capp

Accrued Interested -- You didn't say if that was interested earned or paid. -- Flo
Valve

Mary Mei -- Did that hurt? I mean... I thought I saw a tear fall from your eye. I
don't think that crying is becoming of a gladiator. -- Water Rat

We hate Userous Merchants! -- Psycho Dad

Jupitor -- ...! ...! ... -- Mongo Crush

He says thank you for the easy win. He always knew you were a pushover. That fight
just proved it. -- Psycho Dad

NO! I demand a new manager! Jorja was skimming down the list of fights, looking for
members of the team, and she just SLID RIGHT PAST ME! She didn't RECOGNIZE me as one
of hers! This has to be FIXED. -- Storm Warning
P.S. Or there will be thunder and lightning and freezing rain!

Hub Capp -- I was, perhaps, a little carried away--the grue and all--but I knew your
grandfather Handy and DESPISED him. -- Pop Target
P.S. He tried to steal Mom Target away--before she married me--and used UNDERHANDED
methods.

Water Rat -- It's too COLD for swimming, I just can't do it. -- Mary Mei

Pluto -- It was probably the conjunction. Or else a passing evil comment in the Oort
Cloud. -- Lucky Looie

Uranus -- You eclipsed me so Jorja would forget about me, didn't you? You... CURSED
me! -- Storm Warning

Jar Jar Binks? What kind of name is that for a standby? He sounds like some kind of
specialty pickle. -- Slinger the annoyed
