TEAM SPOTLIGHT
"Do you think she can win?" Water Rat asked Longshot.
"I am sending Marin in to let her prove herself." Longshot replied with a poker
face.
"Ahhhhhh... I see." Water Rat said with a wink.
The conversation played over and over in Marin Bleu's head. The elven maiden
wished that she had never run up the stairs to Longshot's study. Marin had only
wanted to see the joyful reunion between Water and Jackie. What was supposed to be a
joyful reunion turned into a slap to the face. They didn't think she was good enough
to beat Klyde Spectre. Why bother sending her if it was a pointless venture? Long
shot could have easily sent Mongo in to blood feud. There is no way that Klyde could
beat him. If her manager really wanted to send a message, he could have sent Water
Rat. Talk about over kill. Water would have really made Klyde a spectre. But
instead they sent their errand girl to get her out of the way. So be it. She would
play their game and she would win. Marin tightened the straps of her helmet and
walked to the huge double doors.
The doors of the arena opened and the crowd immediately began cheering. Across
the sand stood Klyde clad in leather armour and a steel cap. In his hand he held a
long sword. The half elf took a couple of practice swings and beckoned Marin to come
closer. He looked insane with a toothy grin plastered on his face. Marin remembered
that her family had a cat back on their farm. The cat would sit in the window and
have that same expression on its face as it watched the birds in their yard play safe
in the knowledge that the cat couldn't get out and hunt them. But this was
different. The bird was walking into the same room as the cat. But unlike the bird,
she came prepared to fight.
Arenamaster Nor looked splendid in his purple robs as he introduced the two
gladiators. Marin's long sword and dagger began to feel heavier and heavier in her
hands as she waited for the signal to start. She also began to sweat under her suit
of ring mail. It was surprisingly warm for a fall afternoon. There were some parts
of northern Alastari already getting snow, and here she was sweating. She considered
that it could be nerves, but quickly pushed that thought away. She had no room for
doubt. She only had room for ideas on how to take Klyde down.
Arenamaster Nor gave the signal to begin and like a lightning bolt Klyde had
launched himself forward. Marin thought of how clumsy she must have looked as she
threw her dagger into the path of the attack. What was meant to be another weapon to
attack Klyde became another thing to keep him at bay. Marin fell back as she parried
the attack. The power of the blow was impressive to all that watched. Arenamaster
Nor even nodded in appreciation of the strength behind the attack. Marin looked for
an opening to return the favour, but Klyde was already throwing another attack at
her. Marin managed to parry the attack again. This time she shifted to the left to
find an opening. This allowed Klyde to slash downward at her now exposed side.
Marin parried with her long sword and backed away breathing heavily. Klyde smiled as
he thrust his sword forward. Marin let out a cry of pain as the tip of the blade
went through the ring mail shirt she was wearing and pierced her chest. The blade
felt like angry lightening as it pierced the metal rings and leather shirt
underneath. Marin fought the urge to lie down on the sand and curl up into a ball.
The pain was that great. Klyde pressed his attack and lunged again. This time Marin
arched her dagger into the path of the blow. She could see the thin blade bend from
the weight of the blow it.
In one fluid motion, Marin spun off the attack and hacked at the legs of Klyde.
Her intentions were to get him off his feet. It's hard to jump around and attack
your opponent if you are on your back like a turtle. That did not work as well.
Fore just as she had spun and attacked him, Klyde had imitated her movements to the
letter and done the same thing. The only differences were that his blade connected
and hit Marin in the hand. The ambitious elf's armour held, but she was having a
hard time holding her dagger and it spun from her hand and out onto the sand. "No
problem! I still have my other bla..."
Marin's words were cut off as Klyde's longsword hit her in the throat. Why was
he so fast?!?!?! Instinctively, Marin placed her hand on her throat. She was
finding it hard to breath and was afraid that the menacing half elf had sliced her
throat. Before the elven maiden could move her hand away, Klyde had made another
slashing attack. The fact that he attacked the same areas and essentially hit them
was duly noted as she staggered backwards. Marin chuckled at the thought that if she
hadn't had her hand up, he would have hit her in the throat twice; and possibly
removed her head from her shoulders.
Marin Bleu let out a cursed as she barely parried the frenzied half elf's
attack. The elven maiden moved away from her attacker. If only she could get a
moment to catch her breath and gather her wits and figure this out. That is when she
saw it. Klyde was breathing heavily. It looked as if he was about to pass out from
exhaustion. Now was her chance! Marin lunged forward with her own long sword in an
attempt to skewer her opponent. She had had enough of this Klyde Spectre person to
last a life time. And in a blink of an eye, he moved. Was he even there at all?!??!
Pain reassured her that he was there as Klyde catapulted forward into a lunge. When
the half elf's long sword hit Marin's right arm, it went numb from the elbow down.
Marin quickly signaled to the arena master that she couldn't continue and Klyde
Spectre had won the duel. The crowd loved the match and showered both warriors with
praise. Marin had no use for it though. She was angry and hurting. She wanted this
win to prove to Longshot that she wasn't some nuisance that needed to be kept busy.
When the medical staff rushed out to tend her wounds, Marin waved them away with her
good hand. Her long sword lay in the sand long forgotten. If she was leaving the
arena, it would be by her own power. That's what she did. As she walked through the
gates, she worked her numb arm trying to get some feeling back into it.
Longshot was the first person to greet her. He had a worried look on his face.
Marin thought that he felt guilty for sending her out there to face Klyde. Perhaps
he should. It was a dangerous thing to do if he knew that she couldn't beat him.
This didn't change the fact that she thought that she could beat him. "Are you okay?
I want you to get that arm looked at." Longshot said. His concern was genuine.
Marin ignored her manager and continued to walk down the hallways to the
dressing rooms. That is when she thought of something and walked back to him. She
was still trying to work feeling back into her arm.
"I want him again." She said. Marin then turned and continued to her dressing
room. She didn't give Longshot a chance to reply. If Marin had waited, she would
have seen the pride on his face. She reminded him of another Araoi elf he managed.
They called her Rebecca, but she fought under the name of "the Influencer". Both
ladies had the same "Do or Die" mentality. Longshot immediately set up the blood
feud for the next turn.

Notes from the arena champ.
Hello hello. It's everyone's favourite pluviophile. Wate... What? Are there
some of you shaking your heads? Are you trying to tell me that I am not your
favourite? Ahhhhh... I see. You don't know what a pluviophile is. Sorry for using
such big words on you guys. I just wanted to show off my fancy vocabulary. You need
brains and skill to become duel master. Don't believe me? Just take a look at
Morya's previous duel master. Travel had skills, brains, and the looks. Whereas I
was stuck with brains and skills. Who says two out of three isn't bad? It's not
fair, I tell you.
I would like to dedicate this win, and all wins against the Planets' stable to
my deceased stable mate, Psych. You got several rotten deals and should still be
here fighting alongside the rest of us. You are truly missed, brother. I see
Morya's Dark Arena is getting a lot of business. Last turn saw another twelve
deaths. So guys got really ticked and decided they would come back. I would love to
see the look on their manager's face when that happened. I hear you guys are
prepping for some kind of contest. Well, good luck to you allunless you come
bothering me. Then I hope you fall on your blades.
So, who to challenge? I don't know. If any of the challenger champions come
for the title, they will get it. There is no question that they can do it. I've
tangled with Eye Bags before and he is an animal. I've heard rumours around the
drinking establishments that Funky Chicken and Electric Boogaloo shouldn't be taken
lightly as well. If I am lucky, they will continue avoiding regular combat and
continue worrying about their rankings in the tourney. I seriously doubt I'll get to
fight a stand in. So, it looks like I might have to tangle with a member of Planets.
That is something I am not looking forward to. I mean, they use the same names over
and over. Why don't they name some of their members Akka, Giz, or Alderaan? I think
they are up to their second or third 'Venus' and the gods know how many 'Jupiters'.
Maybe they need help with the spelling.

SPY REPORT
Like the magnificent Sun, rising upon the Dawn and exiling the Night for a Day,
I, Novgorodny Vir, return once again! The boys at LORDS OF DISCIPLINE left the arena
dejected, after being kicked out of the top spot by MEAN PEOPLE. Good show! Like a
chunk of francium heaved into a wet pond, THRESHOLD blew up the rankings to 12! Good
things come to those who fight well, as NEW MISFITS can attest, moving up by 7. I
doubt many are quaking in their boots, but THRESHOLD comes out of nowhere to get
4-1-0. What does the future hold? Watch this space... Win some, lose some.
Speaking of which, THE USEROUS MERCHANT was winsome, after beating WICKER GREMLIN and
seeing him lose 16 points. Those who hoped for a new Duelmaster were disappointed by
TALISMAN, of MAGICAL MADNESS, who despite a 11-9-1 couldn't overcome MORYA's Number
1. So who was the warrior seen charging into immovable walls and challenging dead
trees? Someone's got a basic problem...
A Zenmaster once told me, 'Does not the spinning wheel turn? And do not the
little birds cry out?' Any ideas? Like the noble eagle soaring amongst the
mountaintops, so stand the warriors of STAFF OF LIFE, alone and unchallenged. The
warriors of STAFF OF LIFE found their efforts at combat frustrated as JUGGALO RYDAZ
apparently had more important things to do than fight. Everyone is famous for
fifteen minutes, and MONGO CRUSH is it right now. Most challenged warrior. Isn't
LORDS OF DISCIPLINE proud! SHOW OF HANDS challenged CONSULTATION! Who says CARESS
OF STEEL are just a bunch of wimps! SHOW OF HANDS of CARESS OF STEEL kept his wits
as he won victory over CONSULTATION. My love of complete Spyreports dictates that I
note the mismatched fight, MONGO CRUSH and SID SICKLE. Are LORDS OF DISCIPLINE
unwilling to engage in a fair fight? I thought MONGO CRUSH showed great skill and
promise when he lost to SID SICKLE. All right, so I slept through it! Big deal!
The moving sword slashes, and having slashed, moves on... Oh hard! that to
strike a flame, the match itself must needs be wasting!
All good things must come to an end. As the seasons change, and the creatures
of the wild change also, so do I feel a yearning to leave this place. MORYA, I leave
you now. The Duelmaster has agreed to foot my bill at Arthur's Last Stand. 'Til
