TEAM SPOTLIGHT
Despite my best efforts, Peggy Sue stared at me across the table of the inn.
"What do you want?" she finally asked, sitting back and feigning concern over the
brand I now bore on my right wrist, either failing to notice or deciding to ignore the
Collaboration witness being set up at the table next to us.
"You called the meeting," I snarled, covering my right wrist with my left arm and
glaring at her.
Beside us, I heard the mark explain that she appreciated the owner of the company
not only agreeing to the meeting but also treating her to lunch. "It's annual
review time, and..." She faded off, looking at me expectantly.
"And?"
"You owe me."
"I owe you?" I leaned back, took a sip of my cab and stared at Peggy. "I owe
you?" I repeated.
"Yes, but only once," she replied. "In fact, I wanted to make it clear that--"
"Wait," I asked, cocking my head to the side. "Do you hear that? It sounds
like.. like.. chirping?"
The woman beside us dove into her soup and began to explain her concern about the
payroll and accounts payable processes at her purview, including the irregularities
she had stumbled across. "I figured I had missed something, so I went back and
checked twice." The gentleman seemed to pale.
"I don't hear anything," Peggy replied. She glanced at me with no small amount
of annoyance.
"Let me make it clear to you: I want a significant raise and a bonus."
My eyebrows raised almost involuntarily, but I am better than that. "What about
everyone else who is contributing to the effort?"
Beside us, the owner recovered from his obvious discomfort at the turn the
conversation had taken. "But, how do you even know about the irregularities?" The
gentleman coughed and recovered. "I mean, how are you certain?"
The woman beside us, certainly Oshkin in origin smiled with excitement. "I set
up a process to reconcile the accounts." She droned off both beyond my interest and my
need to know. What mattered most is that the gentleman was obviously concerned and
pumping her for, rather than the core issue that might impact his business, who she
might have told. This did not bode well for her. Well, none of my business.
"Don't even go there with me," Peggy Sue warned, leaning forward in her chair.
"Of the entire team, I am the only one to kill anyone." She sat back and snorted.
"It is called a Slaughter Challenge, after all."
"So, seriously, you don't hear that," I implored. "It sounds like weeping. Like
someone who, I don't know, is weak and feels the need to be heard, to feel their point
is validated."
Peggy Sue stared off into space, a look of intense concentration on her face.
"No," she declared.
"So I am hearing things?" I asked.
"No, you are hearing something. What you heard is the sound of crying-- of a
loser."
"Are you sure?"
She raised an eyebrow and lowered her head towards me which, with a different
woman, might have been attractive. "Yes, I am sure. What you hear is the pathetic
wailing of someone without a point, without a leg to stand on and," she grinned
wickedly, "without a crappy slasher they sent my way."
The gentleman beside us signaled over the waiter who, by my estimation, had never
waited a day in his life before today. "Thank you, my dear." The gentleman stood and
bowed to her, which I felt was in extraordinarily bad taste. The confused smile she
gave him almost made me lose my lunch as he walked away. The waiter continued towards
the table.
"Fine," I replied, as I stood and half drew my dagger. "I agree, you are due a
raise and a bonus. You need to keep that confidential."
"Of course," she replied, taking in the situation and, apparently, deciding to
remain uninvolved. "I'll hold you to that, even if you die," she warned.
Fabulous. The "waiter" approached the woman's table and I gave it even odds that
there were only three people in the inn, including the waiter, who saw his hand drift
inside his cloak and come out with something sharp and pointy.
Well, now or never. I took both a deep breath and a half step towards the waiter
before realizing what he had in hand was mostly a spike. Some days I just hate
missing my cup of coffee. He was good and managed to miss most of my dagger while
continuing towards his obviously confused target. He did not, however, miss Peggy's
broadsword, which came sweeping in to relieve him of his spike.
"Twice the bonus." Peggy commented before pulling her broadsword from the
assassin and walking out of the inn.

and despair! Nothing is certain in MORYA, with changing loyalties, changing
Duelmasters. Write this down: new top team--BASH BROS BODY. Like a chunk of
francium heaved into a wet pond, NUCLEAR KNIGHTS blew up the rankings to 12!
Thinking about sending their team manager to the Dark Arena is OF WOLF AND MAN, after
suffering a 12 drop in ranking. Rumor has it an incurable disease has swept the
stable of BEAR LAKE BULLIES. Note their drop in the rankings from 11th to 25th.
Watch out!!! Good things come to those who fight well, as STAFF OF LIFE can attest,
moving up by 4. COMIC STRIPS had cause to celebrate, after SNOOPY got 21 points by
beating RUNE. Win some, lose some. Speaking of which, WISE PILGRIM was winsome,
after beating CAVOLA ZAPAYO and seeing her lose 17 points. Those who hoped for a new
Duelmaster were disappointed by DRUNKEN DONUT, of UGLY URBAN ORCS, who despite a
17-7-0 couldn't overcome MORYA's Number 1. Word has it one team in MORYA is taking
speech lessons to try to bore their opponent to death. I'll bet it works.
A Zenmaster once told me, 'Does not the spinning wheel turn? And do not the
little birds cry out?' Any ideas? Is it charming personality? Conversational
abilities? Good oral hygiene? Whatever it is, NUTTY NECROMANCER is the most
challenged warrior.
Is there life after death? Pragmatics (and warriors) know there is death after
life! Will MEAN PEOPLE never avenge SWINDLER STANG's death??? Oh brave(?) new
world, that has such people in it! 'Tis new to me! Justice was served as THE
HIEROPHANT fought FROGGER in bloodfeud. Well done, PANDORA'S CARDS! Never one to
advocate diplomacy and restraint, I was pleased to see BLATZ COALITION retaliate
against BIG LAKE PURE in bloodfeud! Ask not a spymaster for counsel, for he will
pontificate long after you have fallen into an unconscious stupor.
All good things must come to an end. As the seasons change, and the creatures
of the wild change also, so do I feel a yearning to leave this place. Can anything

So close in adepts, but beating the snot out of a Snotling 3 times just wasn't going
to happen. He'd be retired regardless of faves, but those faves make the decision
more than easy. Given that I was expecting him to graduate at the beginning of the
Slaughter Contest, it has been highly entertaining as turn after turn came back with
no graduation. No complaints!
