TEAM SPOTLIGHT
"Where'd you get the pumpkin, Peggy?" I asked, signalling the server over.
Unlike the last waiter we'd met, this one actually looked like a waiter, though one
down on his luck or at least his deodorant. Perhaps the cigar he was smoking was
intended to cover up the smell.
"A nice produce stand I hit each month when it's in town." She looked up as the
waiter approached and seemed startled. I decided not to ask.
"Waiter, can I get some wine please?"
He looked at me and replied, "Basically, you all showed up to my home of two
years and selfishly took over the arena for your own amusement."
I looked over at Peggy. She was grinning. "I'll have some wine as well," she
said.
The waiter took a puff of his cigar and looked over at her. "You just turned a
twelve month hiatus into an indefinite hiatus." He stalked off, presumably to get our
wine.
"What was that about?" I asked.
She looked over at me and laughed. "You don't know?"
"Would I have asked if I did?B Never mind. So why did you want to meet?"
"You know how you've had some trouble getting through to the crybaby?B Well, good
news. After purchasing my pumpkin here, I went over to the local curio shop and came
across an Infantile Translator. Want to try it out?" She handed the slim piece of
wood with a hole at each end over to me. It was obviously magical and stuff.
With a shrug, I put the translator to my mouth, aimed it at Peggy and spoke
softly. "You're missing the entire point. We all showed up and you cried and
threatened to take your toys and go home. Then you stayed, lost your warrior, cried
and threatened to take your toys and go home indefinitely. And you're still here
crying."
I looked over the translator at Peggy. She was nearly in hysterics. "What did
you hear?!"
She wiped the tears of laughter from her eyes, took a deep breath and said,
"Here's what came out of the translator: 'Ha ha! Killed your warrior!! Ha ha!
Neener Neener! I'm better than youuuuuu.... I'm better than youuuuuu'."
I sat back in astonishment. "That's what he's hearing?"
"Apparently."
The waiter, to my annoyance, had returned empty handed. I glared at him. "I
asked you for wine."
"Your kill played a role in my decision to make my break indefinite."
Peggy, her eyes twinkling, looked up at the waiter. "Can I have some wine?"
He looked at her and replied, "If I lose a good warrior I will never get them
back." He wandered off again.
I eyed the translator, then put it to my mouth and said "Can I have some wine?"
I looked over at Peggy.
She grinned. "Can I have some whine?"
"Really! Well, THAT explains a few things." I stood up, put on my cloak and
sketched a bow. "All right, see you later."
"Where are you headed?"
"I'm off to a poker game at some woman's house. Rumor has it she's an easy...
win."
"Wait, aren't you going to take the Infantile Translator?"
"No need, two more months and we're out of here."

The Further Adventures
of Peggy Sue
Ashsashshun! Hunter
The man and the band of city militia pushed their way through the gathered crowd
of spectators. He had frantically run up to the patrol and told them that a gladiator
was running amok in the market. There were four militiamen in all. One guard was
obviously green. Anxiety worked its way across the young man's face and they pushed
and shoved their way through the wall of gawkers staring straight ahead at the
spectacle unfolding before them. It would have been a wonder if the young man had seen
more than sixteen years on Ghea. One of the veteran members of his patrol had warned
him that he would see some odd things on his shift. But when he had seen a golem made
of wicker helping an elf drag a man with a cigar in his mouth against the rushing flow
of the crowd, he had to stop and stare. He might have not noticed them at all if it
wasn't for the man with the cigar pointing at the air and shouting "That's right. Stop
living on a six month old victory! If you are such hot sh*t, come see the monks in
Arkers! I would keep bragging about beating Chantilly Lace in the tourney, but I have
more class and victories. I don't have to relive one over and over. Go meet the monks
in Arkers!!!"
The young man felt a strong tap on his shoulder. It was Arn. Arn had been in the
militia for twenty years now. He was a hard grizzled man who had a scare that ran down
the right side of his forehead. It looked like a small white snake crawling from his
thick black hair. Now a steel cap covered his back hair and just a hint of the scare
could be seen. Arn had taken the young man under his wing after seeing him get beaten
while trying to break up a street fight.
"Pay attention boy! Now was not the time to day dream of stare at a pretty face.
There are crazies scattered in large crowds like this. They can have anything; clubs,
sharpened pieces of steel, proper daggers--some can even have homemade explosives. "
If Arm even remembered, he would tell the youngster how a piece of shrapnel from
a homemade clay bomb grazed his head when it exploded. It also gave him the fore
mentioned scar. A couple of inches lower and he would have lost an eye.
The patrol finally cleared the crowd and saw what was causing all of the
commotion.
"And some crazies have broad swords. "
There in the center of the crowd were three people. There was a man who had a
woman in a bear hug from behind. He was holding the woman with ease. The woman he was
restraining had an old dented broad sword in her hand. There was another woman trying
desperately to pry the crazed woman's fingers from the hilt of the sword.
"You guys had better stop! You're interfering with my hunting! Let's go! Come on!
Let go!"
No one had dared to run over and the last guy who had tried to help was standing
off to the side holding his left arm which was gushing blood. He was a big man who
looked to be in his thirties. His face was pale and he looked as if he was about to
pass out. His friends gently tugged on his shoulder to get him to follow them to the
doctor and get medical help. But he refused and shook off their hands. He wouldn't let
that crazed idiot with the broad sword be the reason he was getting bandaged up. It
would stop bleeding eventually and he would get it cleaned and packed with herbs. But
until then, he would wait here and see her hauled off. Maybe he would be luck and give
her a kick in the ribs when she was subdued.
"I said let go! I am trying to kill ashsashshuns! Let! Go!"
Peggy Sue suddenly threw all of the weight of her planetoid sized bubble butt
into a buck that would make a bronco blush in envy and all three went tumbling to the
ground. The woman who was trying to pry the fingers of Peggy Sue from the hilt of the
sword was thrown, catapulted really, five feet and came crashing down on her side with
a grunt and an audible crack. All of the wind rushed from the lungs of the woman as
she laid there grunting and gasping for air. The man who had her in a rear bear hug
caught the full force of Peggy Sue's bubble butted fury. They both crashed backwards
onto their backs. The poor do-gooder's eyes bulged as the flabby death trap that was
Peggy Sue's enormous posterior smashed the man in the gut and cause his breakfast to
spray out like a geyser. Old eggs and bread sprayed up into the air and came down on
his face and her hair.
Once free, Peggy Sue rolled onto her feet and ran. 'Stop her!' someone shouted.
But much like a greased pig, complete with matching hygiene, she slipped through the
hands of her attempted captors. One by stander saw how futile it was to try and grab
the rogue gladiator. So stuck his booted foot out and tripped her. Peggy Sue looked
surprised when she saw the street rushing towards her face. If her feeble mind could
not comprehend the severity of her current situation, the audible thud of her melon
head against the hard cobblestone drove the situation home. Literally.
The collision was loud and cringe worthy. Some of the spectators covered their
eyes or turned away from the soon to be revealed gruesome sight. A matter of seconds
passed by before she pulled herself up from the ground and onto her back. The braver
members of the crowd waited in anticipation for the hideous visage of split lips and
cracked and broken teeth. Peggy Sue sat up and shook her head as if to clear it from
some drugged slumber. Next to her, where her head had struck with bone breaking force,
was cracked cobblestone with a large dent in the centre. It looked like an impact
crater one would find on the moon or some other desolate heavenly body. The crack
spread out from the impact area like the tentacles of an octopus or the strands of a
spider web.
Peggy Sue's face wasn't much better. One would imagine it impossible to wreck
that monstrosity that passed for Peggy Sue's features; tiny cauliflowered ears that
were much too small for her great head, beady little eyes that looked like old raisons
floating in yellowed milk, a hook nose with a bulbous wart off to the side that passed
for a decorative nose ring at a distance, and a smile that instantly reminded one of a
Jack O' Lantern. But the fall had succeeded tremendously.
She had a large knot on her forehead that looked she was about to sprout a horn
or a third eye. Her hooked nose lay to the side and a thin line of blood dribbled out.
Perhaps this wasn't the first time she had taken a shot to that vulture like
proboscis. He lip was split as well. The battered gladiator hoiked and spat out a wad
of phlegm and blood. Peggy Sue then jabbed one of her grubby fingers into her mouth
and probed around as if she was looking for something.
"Oh no!" She exclaimed and frantically began to looking around on the ground. s
"Ah ha!" she said and snatched something up from the ground. She opened her hand
and in the palm of that grungy appendage was an off white pebble that was slender in
width. Peggy Sue then opened that great maw of her melon head and exposed scattered
rows of discoloured teeth. Not all were teeth however. Some were bits of debris found
on the side of the road; a piece of wood here, an actual nail jabbed into the gums
there. But there, between a tooth that was a deep green and another tooth that was
pitch black was a space. Peggy Sue placed the pebble into the open space and moved her
jaw as if she was hammering the 'tooth' back home.
"I'll get some glue later. " She mumbled and stood up. Unfortunately for her, it
was the same time that the militia caught up with her. The men immediately tackled
her, knocking the broad sword from her hand. They then brought out their clubs and
began beating her about the head and back. In the rush of the melee, the man with the
wounded arm got his wish and ran up to deliver a kick to the face of the over whelmed
gladiator. The kick would have had more force if the man wasn't so weak from loss of
blood, but it was strong enough to knock Peggy Sue unconscious.
Peggy Sue slowly opened her eyes. Her vision was blurry. It reminded her of the
time she had stolen Vlad's wine and drank the entire jug. The wine was good but really
strong. It was so hard for her to see, that she walked into several walls before she
could see again. Which was really bad since she usually only walked into two or three
walls after waking up. The walls of her team's guild house were covered with head
shaped dents courtesy of her.
Now that her vision was clearer, she saw a bunch of metal sticks going up and
down. Who would put metal sticks up like that? Peggy Sue sat up and her back leaned
against a cool stone wall. She looked around and realized she was in a cell. NOT
AGAIN!
"Well, looks like she is awake. Yeah. I don't know who is dumber; her or that
idiot manager of hers", said Arn. He was sipping something from a mug. There was a
hint of steam wafting up from the mug and the room had an herbal smell.
"She has that smile again. I hate that. " The young man shuddered and turned
away.
"She isn't any different than that guy in the Lords of Discipline. What's his
name? Mongo something or other. He always has a smile. "
"Yeah, but he is quiet. This one is always rattling off some nonsense. Even when
nothing is there, she makes it up. "
"Like I said", Arn said and drained his mug. "I don't know who is dumber; her
manager or her. They both do the same thing. And neither will admit that they were
wrong. It is always the other guys fault. I can't wait until this tourney is over and
the whole lot are gone. "
Arn stood. "Patrick, I'll do a patrol. I'll only be gone a few blocks. You stay
here and watch her until here manager comes. Make him pay double the regular fine.
Maybe that'll make him get his group under control. "
Patrick nodded and sat in the chair. The do rot the jail closed with a soft thud
and Patrick was alone with Peggy Sue.
"I wonder what she is thinking about. " He wondered aloud and then leaned
back and closed his eyes. Soon his breathing became even and he slipped into a light
sleep. But he needn't worry. Peggy Sue was preoccupied. She was sitting there smiling.
It was the same scene she played over and over in her head. It didn't matter if
she was bored or busy; her feeble mind replayed it over and over. It was her funniest
memory. She was on the sands and the member of Lords of Discipline, the Hush, was
trying to break her defenses. But she held her own. He was too young and green. He
didn't know the nuances to real combat. All she had to do was wait and he would drop
from exhaustion. But there in the back of her mind was a word. It always lived there
in her head. Like a cockroach trapped in a jar. But this time it had gotten free ad
scurried bout. It forced its way to her lips.
"Ashsashshun!" she cried.
The Hush, spun around to see what she was talking about. Did she say assassin? He
had been warned that there were some gamblers that would employ assassins to kill the
better warrior and make sure their favourite won. But this was a bold move. In the
middle of a match and in broad day light? Which one was he looking for? It was
obviously him.
"Where is he? Perhaps we can take him out and then finish out match. Do we have
a deal?" The young elf said.
Suddenly he felt a sharp pain on the side of his head. He turned and saw Peggy
Sue's sword was covered in fresh blood. His blood. The Hush turned to call to the
arena master and yield. There was foul tactics here and he wasn't going to be sucker
punched into a loss. Before he could get the arena master's attention, he felt another
blow. This one to the neck. The blow was so hard he staggered and fell into the sand.
"So, this is how I die" He thought as his blood gushed out onto the sand. Lies
and foul play have done me in. That is when he saw a boot come down just shy of his
face. The Hush turned his eyes up to see Peggy Sue standing over him. She had a smile
on her face. An idiot's smile. Her eyes were flat and lifeless. It was hard to tell if
she was an idiot, and idiot savant, or one of the most cunning beings in Alastari. He
opted for idiot. The eyes were too dead. The jaw was much too slack. A cold feeling
crept over his body and he knew it would soon be over. He knew Longshot would enter
him in Ahringol's tourney. He also knew it was too futile. The system was broken. Too
many hangers on trying to get as much experience as they can had fould the waters of
fair play in the games. Too many who should have moved on the isle were still walking
around with mere mortals. And those who missed the chance to get Greywand's prize are
in the land of the dead as well waiting for the chance to feel the warm sun on their
skin. He wished he could feel the sun one more time before he passed on. But he was
cold. So, so cold.
That is when his last breath left his lungs and his eyes too went dead. But life
carried on and the crowds roared for more blood.

I think I like this random matchup format. One new victim at a time. The good Queen of
Pentacles was one shot and done. I'm hoping that my next car jacking will be the same.

I can't believe the violence in MORYA! I still haven't told Mom I'm writing
Spyreports. She'd have a cow! Well, here we go... I couldn't believe it. Did
PANDORA'S CARDS really go up by 13? If only those guys didn't have so may missing
teeth... Gross! Uncool, GOLDEN OLDIES. I mean 1-4-0 is bad. Will they will be
allowed to fight? I say use 'em for training practice! One team deserves special
mention 'cause they moved up 5 after going 4-1-0. Keep it up, NEW MISFITS! MVP
award for WHEELY BALDY? NEW MISFITS' proud of him after beating DRUNKEN DONUT and
getting 25 points. Talk about yer major upsets! NUTTY NECROMANCER's match with
TANNER cost him a loss of 17 points! Was that a tear I saw in LONGSHOREMAN's eye, as
he took over Duelmastership? And wasn't CARJACK fit to be tied! Who was the wiseguy
that said MORYA's Duelmaster was paying for drinks at Arthur's Last Stand? Don't
look at me!
Look, you guys stick to fighting, all right? BASH BROS BODY was MORYA's most
avoided team. Is there some award for that? I don't know what GOAT'S HAI-5's been
doing. They certainly haven't been accepting many fights from BASH BROS BODY, that's
fer sher. Like, is HAGAR popular, or what? He was challenged the most in all of
MORYA! He's got a 4-4-0, is that good? Some fights are really unfair. How do you
think STICKY VICKI feels about being challenged by KLYDE SPECTRE, 18 points above
her? KLYDE SPECTRE beat STICKY VICKI. No surprise about that. Really I'm not
surprised KLYDE SPECTRE would do such a scummy thing, either. HUNZYKER is being
unfair. He's challenged down 23 against UNPLEASANT ODORS. I don't know why they let
this stuff go on. (I'd better shut up) I was sorry to see such an unfair "fight" in
MORYA. HUNZYKER got 2 points after beating UNPLEASANT ODORS, 23 points below him.
People were asking me did CASANOVA REALLY challenge LUSTY LISA? (all right, maybe
they didn't, but it sounded good!) It wasn't a spectacular fight, or anything, but
LUSTY LISA wants me to write about it since she overcame CASANOVA. Satisfied?
What does a fighter fight for? I mean, the crowds don't give a hoot if someone
gets killed. Not after four more fights. Like was that some Bloodfeud, or what?
(TANNER vs. NUTTY NECROMANCER, that is.) So BIG SHOTS has one more turn to Bloodfeud
THRESHOLD's BELOW DARK. Big deal. HIGHWINE's dead. What's the point? Ya just
gotta go on. Don't look back... Fight, fight, fight. Is that all you guys can do?
Remember, blood on a purple robe may stain. Soak it in cold water, and hand
wash. I gotta leave. MORYA is like such a dump, and you guys smell too much! Its

BLOODGAMES at the SUMMER FACE-TO-FACE
Back by popular demand, we will be having Bloodgames at the Summer FTF! For those of
you who always wanted the chance to manage the last warrior standing alive upon the
arena sands, your day has come. At the end of the ten turns, even though several
warriors, bruised and scarred, MAY yet live, only one will be crowned Champion of the
Bloodgames. And in this game mere survival counts for little. A great general once
said, "The object of battle is not to die for your cause, but to make your enemy die
for his." This general would have greatly enjoyed the Duelmasters Bloodgames. There
will be two different arenas:
FTF-Style (DM 98): for Face-to-Face attendees, with turn-by-turn strategies
Mail-in-Style (DM 99): for all managers, with one strategy for all ten rounds
Gameplay proceeds according to standard DM rules, except for a few notable exceptions:
BLOODGAMES ROLLUP -- Your Bloodgames team is ten warriors, one of each fighting
style, each warrior designed from scratch! (All are 84 points, 3-21, as usual.)
DEATH -- As the name implies, the Bloodgames will leave the arena sands somewhat
darker before they're over. It's a dangerous sport intended only for the tough and
spirited. The Arenamaster will be less likely to intercede on behalf of a dying
warrior. Even at a 1 kill desire, kill attempts will occur.
REPLACEMENTS AND ROLLUPS -- There will be no replacement characters.
CHALLENGES AND STRATEGIES -- In the FTF-style bloodgames, there are no regular
challenges, only bloodfeuds. For the Mail-in arena, warriors may not change their
strategy from round to round (to make it fair for those who could not attend the
FTF). There will be no DA challenges in either arena.
TURN PROCESSING AND DUE DATES -- If you are not attending the FTF, we must have your
rollups and strategies by the Wednesday before the FTF, else they are due by 9pm on
Friday, at the hotel. The Bloodgames will process at the FTF with the regular
tournament.
MISSED TURNS -- All warriors fight each round. Only the dead may rest.
ERRORS -- If we make an input error, that warrior will be awarded a win and kill.
Errors must be reported before the next turn processes.
NEWSLETTER -- Warriors are ranked according to their number of kills. Champions of
Bloodgames may write a column for the newsletter at the end of the games.
FEES -- A Bloodgames rollup costs a $10 set-up fee. Managers may roll up more than
one team but may run only one team in each arena. The fee for all ten rounds is $49.
AWARDS -- The Bloodgames last ten rounds. Only warriors who survive to the end of
Turn 10 will be eligible for an award. However, a consolation award of a Bloodgames
T-shirt will be awarded to the dead warrior with the most kills.
The living warrior with the greatest number of kills will be the Bloodgames Champion.
Bloodgames Victor titles, 2nd and 3rd place, and Bloodgames Runner-up titles, 4th
through 6th place, will be awarded to those living warriors with the greatest number
of kills at the end of Turn 10, with one other important consideration: Each of these
six warriors must be of a different fighting style. Win/loss records and, if
necessary, recognition points will only be used to determine awards if there is a tie.
A Bloodgames T-shirts will be awarded to the manager of the team with the most kills.
The Bloodgames Champion fights for free in Advanced Duelmasters, and all Champions and
Victors earn Tournament Victor status, which allows them to challenge once per turn
with increased priority. These awards last for six months. The manager of the
Bloodgames Champion, Victors, and Runners-up will receive Bloodgames T-shirts.
AFTERMATH -- Warriors from the Bloodgames may not transfer to any other arena. Once
the games are over, the arena and teams will be disbanded. The fighters have won
their freedom and will never more be seen in the gladiatorial games. A special bonus
will, however, be awarded to the 1st through 3rd place warriors. Lady Sheila
Greywand, of the Isle of the Eye, has consented to allow the top three gladiators in
each Bloodgames admission to the Advanced Duelmasters games. Any special training
required to qualify those three warriors for Advanced Duelmasters combat will be
conducted before transfer into ADM. Astute managers will note that this means that
three warriors that are designed from scratch will survive the Bloodgames, win one of
the top three places, and go on to immortal glory! One of those warriors could be
yours!
The challenge is yours to take. The final plans are yours to make.
When the dust settles, remember: To the victor goes the spoils!
