If they'd stolen... uh, found the horses, she didn't want to know about it. "I don't like leaving without Lugard," she muttered. "He isn't here," Bill repeated. "If he's alive, he's made his own escape, and if he's dead, well, he's probably been burned to ash by the lava...." "Don't SAY that!" Ronnie growled. "If we're going to go, let's just DO it." "Good advice," Rokori Klee agreed. The Dark Arena Shew glanced around quickly, his height giving him an advantage. "That way looks best." Bill shrugged indifferently and turned his horse in the direction suggested. Iron Talon did the same. "There are a couple of fossilized professors at the Academy who aren't going to BELIEVE my report," Bill mused. "I always wanted to come across something NEW, something so amazing that old Salovar and Lorimur wouldn't believe it." "Yeah, well, you gotta live to tell them about it," Iron Talon snapped. She stood in her stirrups and confirmed her impression that people were gathering along the edge of the volcanic zone. Very annoyed looking people. Probably coruscine miners who had lost their mines to this eruption. She would just as soon not have to explain herself to them. Monuntial: The big door at the top of the ramp opened with a clang, letting in a slanting shaft of sunlight that Agro was damned glad to see. A voice called for them to come out, not mentioning what might be awaiting them in the arena. And just to make sure they left the big underground room... Agro could hear something else opening behind them, and the roar of water coming through under pressure. Some of the people trapped with him and Bindi yelled in alarm. The big Croc smiled grimly. Come out or drown, eh? He whistled to get the attention of his fellow prisoners, commanding them with gestures--so as not to alert anyone outside--to arm themselves and advance on the exit in an orderly manner. He was pleasantly surprised by the fact that they did remain orderly, all except for a couple who started in to have hysterics... and the nearest neighbors to those two dealt with the problem quickly. He hefted his blade and caught Bindi's eye, gesturing that the two of them should take the lead. As gladiators, he figured they had the best chance to secure the exit before the men guarding the door realized that this was no horde of unarmed laborers coming out. Bindi nodded and raised her own sword. The other float-bearers readied the weapons they'd managed to put together. Forming up in a double column, they started up the ramp at an easy lope. No time for more today, but please accept this as a reminder of what went before and a promise of more to come. -- the Scribe >)]H[(< + -----:----- + >)] The Free Cities #60 [(< + -----:----- + >)]H[(< Korga and vicinity: Aghtamar pushed back her bowl with a sigh of satisfaction. She'd probably eaten better venison stew, but she couldn't remember when. "So tell us about the new danger on the road here," she invited. Cadal drained his tankard of ale and folded his arms on the table. "We don't know what it is," he said, "but there have been more than a dozen travelers' deaths between here and Mirkon [the next town east of Korga] that can't be accounted for by any of the usual hazards. All but one instance were lone travelers, all were moving after dark. A courier, a couple of traders, the rest we're not sure about. Two female, the rest male. Karnhorns, mostly, but three Harkenes, a couple westerners, Convincian, maybe. All armed, four mounted and the others on foot." "A mixed lot," Fist of Kjarran said, nodding. "Nothing to link them together--" "Except the way they died. The doctor here that examined some of the bodies called it 'heart failure'." Cadal grimaced. "Those of us that have been patrolling the road and found the bodies call it 'dead of fear'. The looks on their faces...." He shook his head slightly. "Whatever they met terrified them. All but the oldest two had run long and hard before they dropped. We figure the oldest ones simply died on the spot where they met...whatever it was." "Not a lot to go on, if you're thinking we can help you hunt this killer," Zilla said critically. "I suppose there aren't any tracks?" "Nothing we can be sure of," Cadal admitted. "My idea is to bait them--send a likely traveler along the road after dark and follow, hoping to come on something." "Damned big risk you're asking your decoy to take," Aghtamar pointed out. "Yes, that's why I only want Lord Protectors on this." "I can do this," Fist of Kjarran said briskly. "For the glory of the Empire and in the service of Kjarran and His Daughter Jayde, I will serve as bait to lure out this killer who preys on innocent travelers!" Zukal and vicinity: It was harder to get Veleks into the boat than Ghenis had expected. Dead, it might have been awkward, but alive...the little thief turned suddenly hysterical, shrieking and weeping, trashing wildly, and begging not to be given to "the burning eyes and flashing teeth." Ghenis finally had to knock Veleks out so that he and Harlund drag him into the rowboat. "He's nuts," Harlund growled, leaning into his oars as he drove the boat back toward the shore. "Burning eyes and flashing teeth. Sounds like some kind of kid's nightmare. He do some kind of drugs?" "Veleks? No. He's got a few bad habits, but not drugs. He must have seen something real...but maybe not really what he thinks he saw." "He couldn't've seen something like that, not on the beach he couldn't. There aren't any monsters in the woods around here." Harlund paused and looked around uneasily, looked down into the water, which was filling with the shadows of sunset faster than the sky was. "Might be different if he'd been in a boat to start with," the beach walker muttered. "He might've seen something over the water...." "Veleks can't swim and had no boat. He was not on the water," Ghenis said firmly. "Besides, I found what are probably his tracks. He was on the shore road and left it to run toward the beach, and I do mean run--flat out. Something terrified him. Veleks is no hero, but he wouldn't run without a reason." Harlund opened his mouth to argue further, then looked at Ghenis and shut it again. Smart move. "Just get us to shore, man. Then I'll pay you, and you can go home. It isn't your problem." Malcorn: Blackie, Lord Malcorn of Malcorn, sat in his study and stared into the fire. He was alone, and it was very late. A bottle of wine and a goblet sat on the table at his elbow, but he didn't reach for them. Getting drunk might make him forget his problems for the night, but in the morning, the problems would still be there, and he'd have Shew-sized hangover to go with them. Better to pass on the wine. Had he done the right thing in releasing the Dregur from the Silent Place? Yes. Or at least, releasing them wasn't a wrong thing. Caging them because the Karnhorns didn't know how to live with them and hadn't the power to kill them had been a wrong thing. Blackie believed with his whole heart that death was better than a cage. And he had known the risks he was taking--the risks he was subjecting everyone in the area to--when he released the Dregur. Some innocent people would die of encounters with the Dregur...as innocent people were dying every day at the hands of the invaders. Blackie's eyes went to the wine bottle. That was what haunted him, the innocent people. Hell, even some of the invaders were innocent in all the ways that counted, drafted from their Eastern homes at the command of some powerful lord and sent to Alastari to fight and die. Telling himself that fewer innocents would die this way was cold comfort. * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===FREE BLADES REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 9 ZUKAL (turn 465): TREMERE of DARK TOADS (TigToad, mgr.) SPY REPORT You elder fighters surely remember me. The younger ones may call me Olaf Modeen. I return to LAPUR once again! What's with CINA? She actually beat LAPUR's IRRITATED HOUSEWIFE, and walked away with 14 more points from the fight. Major screwup at DEATH THREAT. COBRA lost 10 points to JUVENAL. Some new strategies, perhaps? Maybe COBRA will provide more easy wins... What a role model for LAPUR's young 'uns! PYGMY SHREW becomes Duelmaster, but don't bother to fight no more! I'm sure LAPUR is excited about MR. YUCK, the new Duelmaster from THE TAKEN. (remember?) But when you've seen as many as I have... Wouldn't it be nice to have live subjects to practice on? I hear some team is looking into the uses of convicted prisoners. Speaking of cowardly avoiders and unfair challenges... LAPUR thinks EQUESTORS and their 411-461-30 is too much! If at first you don't succeed, give up... Management must be dealin', as the boys at BLACK SAMURAI ain't reelin'! EQUESTORS' mad! How well I know the feeling of being the most challenged warrior, ALAN! Don't make idle boasts, they may come back to haunt you. Maybe CROC FILES' BINDI is one of those gals who likes pain, or something. That's what she'll get next week, after challenging up 28 to OTARU. BINDI did pretty good last week in beating OTARU to get 26 points. Why did OTARU lose, you ask? Simple: he wasn't good enough. I hate going to the effort of writing about the kind of fights that GOLDIE gets in. She fights people like GALBA, 8 points below. I thought GOLDIE showed great skill and promise when she overcame GALBA. All right, so I slept through it! Big deal! Warriors of LAPUR unite. You have only your games to lose! How long have I been here? I got people to see, places to go... Well, I'm pretty much through. You guys need to get back practicing. All work and no play makes Olaf a dull fighter. Work and play no fighter dull Olaf. Olaffighterwork and no play. Time for my medication, so I'll leave now. Practice, practice, practice!-- Olaf Modeen DUELMASTER W L K POINTS TEAM NAME MR.
