Niatoli:

Agro squinted at the horizon, where an island was taking shape, gray stone and
the brown of winter-killed leaves. "So that's Niatoli...." His gaze dropped to the
water that still separated their ship from the new shore. Water that was steel gray
and torn into ragged waves where the wind whipped it across drowned rocks. He
glanced at Tully, who had taken charge of sailing their ship. "Isn't there some kind
of safe channel of approach?"
The sailor grinned at him. "This is the safe channel," he said cheerfully.
"This is why people don't conquer Niatoli. Too hard to get here, and we'll be
sitting ducks for catapults on the shore once we get closer, too."
"What a thrilling prospect," the Croc growled.
"Oh, they won't shoot US," Tully said. "We've got a banner they'll recognize."
He gestured toward the ship's mast.
Agro looked, and raised his eyebrows. Apparently the rebels had saved one of
the Usurper's men when they took the ship back in Monuntial. That man was now
hanging from the mast. "An unusual sort of banner," he noted calmly. If Tully had
hoped to shock him, the sailor would be disappointed. Agro was a gladiator and had
seen death often enough, and more than that, he was a Croc. He might look human,
outwardly, but his soul was that of a hunter who had eaten men.
Tully blinked, then shrugged. "Yeah, but it works. There's a lot of people on
Niatoli that fled Monuntial at one time or another," he went on. "Refugees and
rebels and...just people who couldn't take the Usurper's ways."
     "Will they fight?" Agro asked.
"If someone has a plan--a good plan, mind you--and gives them a leader, yeah.
Most of 'em will fight. Have you got a plan?"
     "We'll see," the Croc answered.
                       *** ***** *** ***** ***
For two days, Agro merely circulated among the refugees and listened. Sometimes
he asked a question or two. There was a lot of wild talk--that was among the more
recent refugees. The ones who'd been on Niatoli for months had calmed down. Or
maybe gotten resigned. Not that it mattered which. It was the calm ones he'd want
to talk to first, the ones who'd thrown off their initial indignation and could think
sensibly about ousting the Usurper.
Because he had the beginning of a plan.
He decided to start with a man named Riterrian, who had been a merchant in
Monuntial and was now working--and making good money--as a woodcutter. Agro figured
that showed flexibility and enterprise, and he needed those qualities in the core of
rebel leaders he was going to forge.
They met in Riterrian's woodyard, surrounded by stacked cords of firewood and
ankle-deep in sawdust. Riterrian was wielding an axe himself, lopping limbs from a
tree that before sawing it into logs. When he saw the Croc coming, Riterrian sent
his helpers away with a few muttered words, then waited, axe in hands.
To 'flexible and enterprising', Agro mentally added 'intelligent'. If the man
was willing, he'd make a good lieutenant. "You've guessed why I'm here."
"Yes, I think so. There's been talk about you." Riterrian's hands sifted a
little on the axe. "Tully is sure you're going to lead a successful revolt against
the Usurper." He was silent for a moment. "Tully talks a lot."
     Agro shrugged. "He's right."
"Why? You're not from Monuntial yourself, so why do you care?"
"Would you believe I hold a personal grudge against the Usurper for what he
tried to do to me and Bindi?"
"Maybe, but that wouldn't be enough to explain why--"
"Because I'm from Lapur, which is allied with Monuntial--old Monuntial, not the
Usurper." Seeing that Riterrian was still unconvinced, Agro frowned, searching his
mind for other reasons. Finally he shrugged. "I like a good fight."
"Now, that one rings true," Riterrian said. He turned and drove his axe blade
into a chopping block, then sat down on the trunk of tree where he'd been working.
"Have you got a plan, or are we making one together here and now?"
Agro grinned, displaying rather more teeth than a human would. "We're making a
plan now. I can get fighters--gladiators, mostly--but you're the one who knows
Monuntial and its people. I've only been there once."

Monuntial:

The door closed softly behind him. The Prince of Ar turned and examined his...
accoster. A woman, he saw with surprise, nearly six feet tall, and she moved like a
warrior. A very accomplished warrior. "What do you want to talk about?"
"How to coordinate our efforts," she said briskly. "I can tell by the places
you've gone and the questions you've asked that you are the enemy of Nishtar and
Quelsarrain." She smiled grimly. "And an enemy of my enemies is my friend. I am
Tyrai. I used to be the Arenamistress here."
"Coordinating our efforts implies a common goal," Ar said. "Mine is simply to
gather information. I am not, myself, an insurrectionist here."
Tyrai smiled grimly. "I am rebellious enough for both of us. Here is the
information I have--in brief, since I assume you don't want the details of who is
collaborating with the Usurper, who is hiding Loyalists, and so on." She paused for
a moment, as though to marshal her information. "The Invasion, in this part of
Alastari, was originally under the command of Pasha Arjuna, who has since cast off
his Eastern allegiances and become ruler of Zarens--"
"I know Arjuna," the Prince interrupted.
"Good! Then perhaps you can answer a question for me: Will he intervene to
curtail his former subordinate, Bey Nishtar?"
Ar shrugged. "I don't know. Perhaps. He's been busy so far simply
consolidating his position in Zarens. He has the support of most of the nobles
there, but--"
"But there are always a few who think THEY should be the ruler, not some
stranger. Understood. But Nishtar and the Usurper, especially Nishtar, do not
intend to stop with controlling the Monuntial Peninsula. Nishtar has imperial
ambitions, and he's been negotiating something with Morya, even making overtures to
Dullens and Khalani. As for the lesser states immediately to the south of Zarens..."
she shrugged, "would you want to bet your life on their decision, if Nishtar offers
them an alliance?"
"No. And if I were Lord Kinnishan of Chimlevtal, I wouldn't make that bet,
either. I see that we have more to work together on than I had expected." He sat on
one of the two stools which, with a rough table, were the room's only furnishing.
"Tell me more, Arenamistress."

Zukal:

Ghenis threw down the handful of papers in disgust. Invoices for the purchase
of black candles and sacrificial knives, chickens, rabbits...potatoes? An angry note
from the man in charge of the cult's storeroom, demanding an investigation to
determine what had happened to three yards of black cloth and a pound of onions that
should have been there and weren't. A requisition for a cushion "to kneel on while
praying"--gods! Members of dark cults were supposed to be TOUGH. All these
pettifogging little details were an insult to the whole IDEA of a dark cult. He had
a dark suspicion that Pelishtekan had deliberately dumped this work on him, this
FILING, to get back at him for something. The Ferencian was always "getting back at
people," and often for the slightest of slights. It just showed you what kind of
people Easterners were!
Ghenis looked at the papers that were now scattered on the floor of his cubicle
and came to a decision. He had had enough. He walked out into the hall, taking care
to tread on as many of the papers as he could in the process. These "administrative
details" were the Ferencian's doing, but there might, still, be a proper dark god at
the head of the cult. He would find out, and if there was such a deity, he would
give it proper worship, with blood--and not chicken or rabbit blood--and dark deeds.
And if not...Pelishtekan would find out that Hell had NOTHING like the fury of a dark
cultist scorned.
Ghenis began to consider ways in which he might discover the truth at the heart
of the cult.

Elsewhere in Zukal:

Jorja rubbed her forehead tiredly, which didn't do a thing to relieve the
headache. She wasn't sure just how SHE had been appointed to organize the overthrow
of Sekahos, one of Inzolas' men and the current ruler of Zukal. What business was it
of hers? She was Adantri, dammit. She sighed. Doreg's doing, probably. Doreg
was--or had been--one of the Bandit Princes of Zukal. Their association had been
brief; she hadn't even liked the man much. But apparently that was enough. By
Mantor's blazing sword, it was MORE than enough.
If getting rid of Sekahos was what it took to shut up the yammering Bandit
Princes, then she would do it.
The first thing she needed was information. Spies. She began to go over the
list of gladiators she might call on for assistance.

Somewhere between Veastian and North Fork:

Emir Kyreses of Veastian shrugged and sighed. "I know. You meet the Mad
Khaliv's minions on land, and I have no doubt they're a major problem. But--"
"AND we shelter YOU from them," Gorich of North Fork cut in. "WE bear the
burden of his demon soldiers, not--"
"We meet them at sea," Kyreses countered. "Most of our ships are destroyed or
dare not return from southern ports, no sailors can be found who will ship out of--or
into--Veastian. To say nothing of the damage this has done to our economy, we--"
"Something must be done." Gorich glared at Kyreses, daring him to counter THAT
statement.
The Karnhorn did not. "I agree. But I don't know what will answer our needs
best. To kill the Mad Khaliv is obvious, and it MAY be enough...or it may simply
free all the demons he's bound to his service."
"Aye." The swampman was silent for a moment. Then he shrugged. "But at least
it's a place to start. But to assassinate the Mad Khaliv will take men very nearly
as mad as he is."
"Gladiators," Kyreses said. "That is who we must send."

This is a general call for warriors who want to be in adventures. Any warriors from
any arenas, Basic or Advanced, any region, are welcome. A personal or a diplo to
Scribe will do the trick.

                                      SPY REPORT

It is I, Novgorodny Vir, Spymaster of Spymasters. Look on my work, ye mighty,
and despair! DEATH THREAT after a sorry 1-1-0 might want to consider abandoning the
sands and taking up singing the 'Can't fight no more' blues! What's a move up by 4
you ask? (alright, maybe you didn't ask) Cause for celebration, according to
CRIMSON KINGS. Say what you will about blind luck and dirty fighting, but ANGRY
ANIMALS will tell you 6-0-0 is nothing to laugh at... EQUESTORS had cause to
celebrate, after GALBA got 19 points by beating SCRAPPA. A certain someone should
cut down on the drinking and practice more, after losing 14 points to THE MINCER.
(Discrete enough, FLINT EYE?) Duelmaster PYGMY SHREW from SHREW CAN IT BE NOW is
going for the gold, as he challenged MEN's ALAN. Ooh, the excitement! Those who
hoped for a new Duelmaster were disappointed by ALAN, of MEN, who despite a 14-14-0
couldn't overcome LAPUR's Number 1. Word has it one team in LAPUR is using psychics
to predict wins. They lead a charmed life!
A Zenmaster once told me, 'Does not the spinning wheel turn? And do not the
little birds cry out?' Any ideas? Like a horde of jackals fleeing from the lion, so
did the "warriors" in LAPUR avoid EQUESTORS. Like a pup with its tail between its
legs, BLACK SAMURAI scurried away from EQUESTORS. Oh, the shame! Is it charming
personality? Conversational abilities? Good oral hygiene? Whatever it is, ALAN is
the most challenged warrior. Do my ears deceive me? FORMENTERA LADY (outclassed by
26 points) challenged MUCIANUS, in what promises to be a fight.(!) Soopreyes,
soopreyes! FORMENTERA LADY emerges from the fray 3 points the richer. Good show,
FORMENTERA LADY! SUGARPLUM found herself challenged by a warrior 23 below: PRINCE
RUPERT. PRINCE RUPERT of CRIMSON KINGS kept his wits as he was subdued by SUGARPLUM.
Is there life after death? Pragmatics (and warriors) know there is death after
life! Charity is unknown in LAPUR, and rightly so. CRIMSON KINGS exacted their
revenge against CROC FILES. Ask not a spymaster for counsel, for he will pontificate
long after you have fallen into an unconscious stupor.
Do not think spyreporting in LAPUR is the highlight of my life. As the seasons
change, and the creatures of the wild change also, so do I feel a yearning to leave
this place. Do not despair! I shall return!-- Novgorodny Vir

Ah, Fracture...we hardly knew ye. We will miss you; Prince Rupert may even grieve
for the loss of your groin jokes. -- The Yellow Jester

I wouldn't count on it. -- Prince Rupert

Cookie -- We thought Fracture had you; nicely recovered. A team representative will
be seeing you soon; we'll see if your luck holds again. -- Crimson Kings

Tall Tree -- I don't like fighting trees. You don't cut good. -- The Mincer

Mincer -- He's obviously a hardwood; they don't mince well. -- The Yellow Jester

Flint Eye -- Perhaps you *should* have flint-knapped Fracture; it would have taken us
a while to get the ransom together, and he might have missed the fight that killed
him. But you weren't to know. -- The Yellow Jester

The Mincer -- It does no good to mince the moss between my toes, you know. Moss
doesn't care. -- Tall Tree
P.S. But if you MUST do it, there's some on my north side that really itches.

Somebody sent his SERVANT into the arena as a punishment? Tell me who it was, and
I'll punish HIM. -- Flint Eye

Prince Rupert -- I almost mistook you for Prince Albert there. Good try, but it was
hardly a fair match for you. -- Sugarplum
P.S. Unless you have hidden tourney fights, of course.

Southeastern Shrew -- Remind me to go northwest next time I see you around. -- Black
Tiger

Cookie -- Okay. -- Sugarplum, the ever gullible, er, I mean, the ever friendly and
willing

Ed. -- The last shoe I tried to feed a plastic bag to up and whomped me good. And
they said shoes were dumb and gentle! -- Black Tiger the bruised

If they were dumb and gentle, they wouldn't pinch my toes all the time! -- Ed.

8 December 2003
Greetings! I would like to invite everyone to Jhans (DM 36) for the first annual kLk
St. Valentine's Day Massacre (kill contest). We will start the contest off with the
ceremonial burning of the Andorian flag on turn 450. (Six turns away. Roughly mid-
February.) The contest will run for 10 turns. On turn 461, 3 separate victors will
be announced. Team with the most kills, warrior with the most kills, and alliance
with the most kills. Prizes will be awarded to the manager of the team with the most
kills and to the manager of the warrior with the most kills. The prizes will
probably be team roll-ups. The number of roll-ups has yet to be determined. The
contest is sponsored by Jhans' newest, (but by the time the contest starts) largest
alliance, the kLk (pronounced "klick"). -- Polarius, mgr. of Blitzkrieg DM 36
