Agro waded out of the surf and crossed the narrow strip of sand to the trees, then lowered his bundle of clothes and weapons. His teammate Bindi followed. They dressed quickly, although the strobing of the lightning was more hindrance than help. "If there's any shore-watchers, they'll have seen us," Agro muttered, his deep voice almost lost beneath the fury of the storm. "If they're paying attention," Bindi said. "A night like this, mammals stay indoors." Her grin was a flash of white teeth. "They don't like to get wet." She shook herself once to settle clothes and armor. "Good thing WE don't care." "It's an edge," Agro agreed. Most of his attention was on the shore and the woods, searching for problems that would need to be dealt with. Problems such as watchers. He flexed one hand. He could deal with that kind of problems. "You ready?" "Yes." "Then let's go." He moved deeper into the woods. It wasn't a true forest, just a belt of trees between the shore and the road that ran up the peninsula to Monuntial. But it was thick enough to provide cover for them. And for anybody who might be waiting and watching. Any kind of assault on the occupied city would come from the shore. Watchers would be in the woods along the shore. He wanted to get away from this danger zone. A fight here would be stupid. It wouldn't accomplish anything useful-- Agro had one hand in front of him so as not to run into a tree. The hand came against something warm. His fingers closed in a crushing grip on something that struggled. A blast of lightning more violent than any before tore the sky beyond the trees, but under their dense cover there was only darkness, and something that thrashed against the Croc's grip. After a minute or two, the struggling faded, then stopped. Agro dropped whatever it was, whoever it was, and went the rest of the way through the belt of trees, sliding into the last cover at the edge of the road. Presently he sensed someone beside him and knew it was Bindi, because there was none of the cloud of heat that accompanied a mammal at all times. Wasteful, that was, heat should be conserved. But useful now. He'd heard that some of these elves could "see" heat. But they wouldn't see a Croc. He couldn't exchange words with her here and be sure that she'd hear...and no one else. But it didn't matter. Their plan had been worked out long before they left the ship out on the lake and swam ashore. They weren't even both needed to carry it out, each was backup for the other. If either one got through to Monuntial and completed the mission, it would be enough. But Agro intended that they both survive, both succeed. People said that the cold-blooded Crocs also had cold emotions, but that wasn't true. Bindi was a teammate, a friend, a female of his species who were too few in number in this world. He wouldn't lose her. When he was sure the road was clear, he dashed across it, caught a glimpse of movement out of the corner of his eye--not Bindi, something else--and dived into the ditch on the other side. Water and mud. His clothes were soaked at once, and mud oozed between his armor and his body. A nuisance, that. He considered discarding clothes and armor both. No, better not, unless they became an actual problem. Discomfort he could live with, and the clothes would make it easier to slip into the occupied city without arousing comment. Even wet, muddy clothes wouldn't stir comment on a night like this. He had no sense of Bindi joining him in the ditch and decided she must have retreated into the trees. Damn. He couldn't go off and leave her; he'd have to wait till she came over the road herself. He should never have agreed to let her come on this insane adventure. Agro couldn't hear anything but wind and rain and thunder, and the water running in the ditch around him. What had he glimpsed on the road? Had it passed, or gone back? Were there other watchers? He had to know. Moving slowly, to attract as little attention as possible if there was anyone to see, he raised his head to the lip of the ditch and squinted into the rain. Looked straight across. Nothing. Turned slowly to the right to look in the direction of Monuntial. Something, moving away. He couldn't judge the distance in this unreliable light. A hundred yards? If so, it was big, a wagon, maybe. No, it didn't move like a wagon, it moved like something alive. But it was going away, so it wasn't the problem of the moment. Turned slowly to the left. Nothing. Searched the darkness under the trees where Bindi was. Should be, anyway. Must be. Nothing. Something stepped out. Not Bindi, he saw that at once. Taller, broader, and it moved differently. Lightning glared off it. Fully armored? No, by the First Egg, it was a golem! His mind flipped over from rational thought to blind fury. He hated golems, all Crocs did. He gathered his limbs under him to attack. The golem gestured, and another emerged onto the road, carrying Bindi. * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===FREE BLADES REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 9 ZUKAL (turn 502): BLUE RUIN of BLUE MOON (Jorja, mgr.) He had a very auspicious start with a win over Irritated Housewife. Irritated Husband is making the funeral arrangements. Say goodbye to Crispus. He was beaten by Lucy and his 3-9 record indicates he does not have the aptitude for the arena. Believe me, I know, we, his teammates have tried everything, but no good. So we will accompany him to the Dark Arena to witness his last fight. I will then retire to the "Bent Gladius" and party hearty. Let me see, who is going to unseat me, Enoshima--nah he is Black Samurai. They are afraid of us, Short-Tailed and Southeastern Shrew took a vacation this turn. Guess they didn't want to face Tall Tree. Least Shrew fought this turn but the recognition difference is huge. How about ECHL-EAST not taking revenge. I thought the guys in the East Coast Hockey League were tougher than that. Oh well, someone else will probably be doing this column next turn. Mucianus SPY REPORT So why do I have this bag over my head? Because I am The Unknown Spymaster and I'm going to give you a spy report!. Coming up with a solid 0-0-0 outing, SHREW CAN IT BE NOW has advanced 3 places in the rankings. Hey everybody, watch out for DOMITIAN, who flew up 12 points in the rankings after mashing BARNEY like a melon. Keep your eye on this guy. And falling like a basher in the top ten was BARNEY, who dropped 9 points after a disappointing (to say the least) bout with DOMITIAN. Going for the gusto and coming up with aught but bloody knuckles was CROC FILES' AMIE, who was turned away from the Duelmastership by MUCIANUS. Advice to bashers--never force anything, just get a bigger halberd! Let's dig a little deeper into what's happening in the LAPUR arena. Here's a song for you: Who's afraid of the big, bad SHREW CAN IT BE NOW? Big bad SHREW CAN IT BE NOW. Big bad SHREW CAN IT BE NOW. LAPUR's afraid of the big bad SHREW CAN IT BE NOW. Tra la la la la! And you guys like to boo me? Well, unsling your rasberries, cause DARK GLORY beats feet every time SHREW CAN IT BE NOW smiles at them. Try farming, eh? Well just about everybody wants a piece of BLACK TIGER, who was this week's most challenged warrior. In a touching display by a 'touched' warrior, CHARLIE went after BLACK TIGER, who was higher by 21 points. Well, when the dust settled, CHARLIE lost to BLACK TIGER. Death is kind of like a new puppy: he's always around wanting to play. (Ha Zontani, how's that for a wise saying?). This week 3-10-0 CRISPUS was sent to the Dark Arena. I know a lot of fighters with similar records who might take notice of this. Remember: alliances are great, but try and take your ally in the arena with you and see what happens. Well, that wasn't too bad; Alarond told me that the people in LAPUR have no sense of humor. Or maybe that they were senseless. Okay, so I may not be the world's best comedian, but then you guys aren't the world's best warriors. If you haven't ever TC'd at a tourney before, here is your chance. The contest will start Wednesday, December 1, 2004, but a chance will be given November 17 to dark arena, only, any warrior that you do not see fit to run in the contest. So now that I have your attention, here are the rules (like you didn't know they were coming sooner or later). 1. Any manager participating can enter one team, only. 2. No sandbagging whatsoever. (I will keep up with it, every turn.) 3. No teams or warriors will be allowed to run after contest starts. 4. All warriors will run until they lose three times, after three losses they are eliminated. 5. If a warrior sits out a turn, they are accounted with a loss in the contest. This is to keep warriors with winning records from sitting out until the end of the contest. 6. If a warrior is killed during the contest, the replacement cannot enter the contest. 7. If a warrior is killed, bloodfeuding is allowed, but only by a warrior that is active in the contest. 8. If a warrior is run after being eliminated, the manager is disqualified from the contest, no questions asked. 9. Challenges are legal, up or down. 10. Contest will keep going until 1 warrior is left without three losses, and that warrior, of course, is accounted the winner. 11. All managers participating will be asked to purchase a rollup certificate, to be awarded to the winners of the contest. <<<PRIZES>>> As I have already said, and according to participation, rollups will be awarded to the first and second place managers. So the majority and minority of the rollups will be determined when all are accumulated. Contest Champion--2 Faves prizes, and majority of rollup certificates Contest Runner-up--1 Faves prize, and minority of rollup certificates So once again I invite all managers old and new to participate in what should be a fierce and challenging contest. <<<REMEMBER, FIRST OFFICIAL TURN OF THE CONTEST IS DECEMBER THE FIRST, AND AS I SAID BEFORE, THE TURN BEFORE (NOVEMBER 17TH) YOU MAY DARK ARENA CHALLENGE ONLY!!! ANY WARRIOR WITH ANY FE (FIGHT EXPERIENCE) WHEN THE CONTEST STARTS WILL BE ELIMINATED FROM THE CONTEST.
