Seeing Bindi as a captive of golems broke the last of Agro's control. He burst
out of the ditch with a roar and flung himself on the nearest golem. He didn't care
whether the thing was battle-trained or not, and it wouldn't have mattered anyway. A
human, or any other true living creature, having found one intruder in the trees
would have expected others, would at least have been half-way prepared for others to
appear. Apparently this golem didn't think like that, if it could be said to think
at all. It had found one intruder, but this did not suggest to it the possibility of
others.
And this golem, at least, would never have a chance to learn that kind of
wariness. The force of Croc's charge knocked it down. Bindi rolled free and kept
rolling till she slammed into the legs of the second golem. That was all Agro had
time to notice. Prepared or not, the golem was strong and fast. Agro's claws
scraped across a metallic surface, leaving no more than scratches. It was like
trying to grapple bare-handed with an animated suit of armor. The thing was like a
damned tin can. There seemed to be no way into the guts of the golem. Frustration
added fuel to his rage. He would not be beaten!
His claws caught in a slight irregularity of the surface, and he drove them in
harder without thought. There was resistance, and then there wasn't, and the motions
of the golem beneath him became...in a human, or any other truly living being, Agro
would have called them frantic. Good! He jammed his claws in, and then under, and
then he reared up and strained. What would have been the chest-plate in a suit of
armor came off in his hands.
There was a sizzling hiss as rain hit the innards of the golem, and flashes of
purplish light from the magic that animated it. If the Croc's mind had been cool...
but it wasn't. He reached in and raked out the tangle of THINGS that were the
golem's life. Crystals, and tangles of wire, and leathery things that pulsed,
cocoons of silken wisps, and something he couldn't name that fluttered and dissolved.
The golem went limp under him.
His anger abating a little, Agro looked around for Bindi and the other golem.
She had been lucky. In falling, the other golem had hit its head on a tree
trunk and the steel head had cracked open. She had driven a piece of wood through
that gap, through the "skull" entirely, pinning the thing to the ground before it
could get up again. This had not stopped its flailing limbs, but it couldn't chase
her, couldn't harm her in any way so long as she kept out of reach.
Bindi met his eyes. "Can we just...leave it there?" She gestured at the
thrashing golem.
Agro shook his head. He was breathing hard, though he hadn't noticed till now.
"It's a magic thing," he said. "It might have some way to communicate with others of
its kind, or with its maker."
"With a stake through its head?"
"They aren't alive. How can we know what kills them? Besides, if you were
building a living thing, would you put its brains out on one end, or in the middle
where they're more protected?"
"Oh! I hadn't thought of...." She looked around in the rainy night.
Agro, realizing that they could see at least a little, looked around, too. A
lightning-struck tree near the edge of the belt of forest was blazing even in the
downpour and casting a fitful red glare over the scene. Bindi darted into the woods
and came out dragging a branch, nearly a log, that was almost too much for her
strength. One of nature's mauls.
Agro grinned and took it from her and slammed it down on the golem's chest. The
first blow stunned it, the second cracked the chest-plate, and the third smashed it
open. Faint purple light flickered briefly in the cavity and faded out.
Agro looked at it with satisfaction. "That's that. Now...to Monuntial."

                                      SPY REPORT

Well, what are you looking at, LAPUR? Ain't you never seen Snide Clemens
before? Ah, shaddup and listen to my news. Middle of the road, BLUNT FORCE, middle
of the road; you'll get no good words from me, until you get better, or worse. Break
a leg. Of course, we're all terribly impressed to see AMIE win a fight and gain 29
points, terribly. Tsk, tsk, WALKS SOFTLY beat BARNEY and BARNEY lost 14 points.
You're breakin' my heart. And if variety is the spice of life, LAPUR may be getting
bland, as MUCIANUS stays top dog in the city. Kickbacks and bribes, kickbacks and
bribes, how else do you think some of these guys win their fights? Skill? Ha!
Well, let's take a look at some more misdeeds of you miserable sword-boys.
LAPUR, I am losing what little hope I had in you. SHREW CAN IT BE NOW the most
avoided team? What insult will suffice, I cannot say. And who led the way in this
mass act of cowardice? Let's see, well, whatcha know? It was BLACK SAMURAI. Ha ha
ha ha! STONETOOTH was challenged more times this turn than the Duelmaster. Now was
the DM insulted or feared? Heh, heh.
Ah, now we come to my favorite part, where we see all the guys who are dead and
gone, and get to see if their team cared. We're all going to die in the end, so why
worry if the fate catches up with you sooner that later?
I was about to buy a new quill pen the other day, but some fighter took it for
an epee. Forgive me for writing with a dagger. Phlllt! Just had to do that before
I leave the fine city of LAPUR. I feel much better now. Paste this one in your
scrapbooks, you'll need the kindling come this winter-- Snide Clemens

Machigai -- Hmmm...shall we go again? -- Amie

Black Tiger -- How DARE you call Charlie a 'gator?! I'M the 'gator around here!!

Cardow Hunters -- Where are they now?? Our old friends from Lapur; Falling Rock,
Cedar, Storm Dancer...we would like to hear from them.... -- Croc Files

Lucy -- (smug look) My teeth may be stone, but my "hide" is steel. You'll break
YOUR teeth on it. Which you probably knew, but this cold weather makes all you
reptiles sluggish, does it not? -- Stonetooth

Nashville -- (recoiling) Gosh. I always heard that elves objected to the production
of half-elves (even though half the effort of such production is necessarily theirs),
but to neuter you, because one of your parents wasn't an elf? That seems...extreme.
Maybe you could get one of the golemic gender attachments? -- Walks Softly,
especially around elves

Mucianus -- I didn't realize you were allowed to bring your horse into the arena!
I'll have to try that.... -- Black Tiger, NOT a Dwarf, and not happy dismounted
P.S. Congratulations on graduating. Will they let you take your horse to the Isle?
After all, it's hard to be an equestor without a horse.

Juniban -- Has it occurred to you that washing might take care of that "black"
problem? Of course, if you always encounter formidable foes in your bathtub, I can
see where that might put you off the whole idea. -- Quick Stinger

Graham -- I'll see what I can do. I had good intentions, and then it started to
rain, and I've spent most of the day running around with pans and buckets. -- the

All you alliance-type people, I'm trying (again!) to get my alliance listing correct
and up to date. Either send me a diplo (address it to The Saint) or send your
updates to me directly at Sue at solberg-mathews.com. As you may guess, replace the
at with @ and you're good to go (I do hate spammy mail and this will end up on the
web).

I have information on the following alliances: ADIO, Allied Axis, Armada,
Brotherhood of Justice, Brotherhood of the Blade, Cadre, CDC, Chaos, Inc., Circle of
Order, Company of Brothers, Consortium, Council of Lords, Couple Good Guys, Crimson
Vengeance, DOA, DOOMcorps, Enigmafia, Eurosquad, Fascist Federation, FONZ,
Frothingslosh Syndicate, GAPPDA, Homeland Alliance, IT Alliance, Jingoists, kLk,
Knights of the Covenant, LBA, League Arcane, Legion6, Living Essences, Lords and
Ladies of Darkness, Manic Union, Midnight Foundation, Minions of Diana, Monarchs of
Montezuma, NCA, NIMROD, R.A.G.E., Seventh Sons, The Firm, The French Connection,
Vendett@ United, and the Vendetta Cartel.

If you are a member of one of these alliances, let me know. If you are a member of
some other alliance that isn't listed, let me know. If you were at any point in your
past a part of one of these alliance but are now independent, also let me know.
Going inactive doesn't mean you get removed from this list; people are assumed to
still be in the same alliance when they return. Even having everyone in an alliance
go inactive doesn't change anything. If an alliance is officially disbanding, that's
another thing you have to let me know....

The Saint, keeper of lists

P.S. If you already responded to my online plea (and I replied), you can ignore
this.

Hammer 500-Hammer Run for the Roll Ups
                                  Hosted by Hammer

Niytyole Island DM 33 has dwindled to the point where as of T-482 [duedate
November 3, 2004] there were only 2 active stables listed with 3 inactive stables in
a once thriving and lively regular arena.
During the past 40+ cycles Hammer has been hosting the Hammer Run for the Roll
Ups in DM 33.
Thus far only the Ripper and Slasher categories have produced winners to claim
the 5 New Team Roll Ups Prize for being the first declared Style Master of their
respective categories to graduate.
Every contending stable has gone inactive for one reason or another, including
CASINO HAMMERZ, over the past several months.
Now DM 33 faces the harsh reality that if RSI chooses to close any arenas due to
little or no interest, Niytyole Island could very well head the list of endangered
regular arenas!
In an effort to preserve his beloved island, Hammer is announcing the
continuation of the Hammer Run for the Roll Ups; combined with the Hammer 500 which
will conclude both contests on T-500 [duedate July 13, 2005] should DM 33 continue to
remain open in the coming months.
     Attention Hammer Runners!
The Hammer Run is for 0 FE Basic Arena Warriors ONLY. Participants MUST Be
Declared in the P-ads On or Before their First DM 33 Basic Arena Fight to Qualify as
a Hammer Runner! Winners of Each Category will receive 5 New Team Roll Up Gift
Certificates mailed from RSI courtesy of Hammer! [On the condition that they
Graduate on or before T-500; see amended rules below!]

The purpose of this contest is to restore DM 33 to a lively and entertaining
arena!
Hammer is willing to foot the Prize bill in a last ditch effort to save Niytyole
Island from deletion if RSI and the Gladiatorial Commission decide that more arenas
need to be closed due to lack of participation and interest.
Should this effort fail to spare DM 33 from deletion, then Hammer is prepared to
transfer CASINO HAMMERZ to another arena if Niytyole Island is closed by RSI and the
Gladiatorial Commission.
