Bindi moved toward the trees slowly, fighting fear and the chill in the air.
She and her fellow Crocs had been given human forms, but they were still, in
fundamental ways, reptiles. This cold, rainy night was not a good time for them to
be engaging in adventurous activities. And there were golems. A croc's natural
weapons were not much use against golems. She flexed her hands. The claws that
could rip open a mammal were useless against a steel-clad thing of magic. And golems
didn't care if it was hot or cold.
She tipped her head back and traced the rope from the net holding her teammate
Agro above the road, into the trees. It had been in the trees that she'd been
attacked by the first golems. There might be more. So why was she going into...?
The rope. Yes, that was it, she had to untie the rope so Agro could be free before
someone--maybe a golem--came along and found him helpless with cold and prolonged
immobility. Bindi took more slow steps toward the trees, crossed the narrow ditch
beside the road. There was water running in the ditch, even in this dark night, it
reflected a little light. The moving sheen of light, dimpled with drifting leaves,
was mesmerizing.
Bindi jerked her thoughts back to the business at hand; the cold was making her
mind as sluggish as her body. She needed to get to somewhere warm. With Agro.
First she needed to cut the rope holding Agro up in the air in a net. Then they
could go together and find a warm place.
There was no light under the trees. She found the rope by blundering against
it, groped for where it must be tied to...something, and could find no end. She
searched as far along the rope as she could reach, but there was no end, no knot.
Frustration rose in her, almost hot. Warm enough, at least, to stimulate her
thoughts. If she couldn't find the knot, she could cut the rope. She could claw and
bite it apart if she had to. She fumbled her dagger out of its sheath and sawed at
the rope, the chill making her clumsy and weak.
Suddenly there was no more resistance against her knife, and she staggered
forward. As though that had been the signal--and it might have been--red eyes
blinked open in the darkness. Golem eyes! There was energy in fear, and she used
it, diving toward the ground. Landing on the mat of sodden leaves and wet dirt drove
the ear from her lungs, as the deep water she had instinctively sought was not there.
But the golem was as much surprised as she had been, and she could hear its fighting
limbs scissoring empty air where she had been standing.
And then a hard thunk, and a duller thud, and Agro's voice. "Are you all right,
Bindi? Where are you?"
Bindi sat up and wiped mud and leaves from her face. "I'm here, and I'm all
right." She gripped his hand and dragged herself to her feet. If she was a true
mammal, instead of just looking like one, she would be shivering. They said it
helped. But she couldn't shiver. It must take special muscles. "What do we do
now?"
Agro was silent for several minutes. "I'm not...sure. Why we're here at all.
I was sure, but...everything is blurred. In my mind. We have to go to...the city."
     "Monuntial."
"If that's the name of it." Another long silence. "It doesn't sound...quite
right."
     "Telessandaria."
"Yes! That's the city. Where we have to go. How did you?"
"It came to me." Hot anger came with the name, warming Bindi as she had not
believed possible. "Nishtar. Him. We have to find him." She had a picture of the
man in her mind, but it kept blurring, no, the city behind him kept blurring. First
it was Monuntial, as she had seen it...before, sometime. And then it wasn't, it was
Telessandaria. Nishtar seemed to belong to both cities. Both cities seemed to be,
in some way, only one. She didn't know how that could be, but she hoped that they
were going to Teles'ndria. She "remembered" that as a warm place, and she WANTED a
warm place now. "Let's go."

                                      SPY REPORT

Greetings, warriors of LAPUR! Once again I've been called out of retirement for
my abilities and insights into Spyreporting. What's with BLACK TIGER? He actually
beat BLACK SAMURAI's MACHIGAI, and walked away with 22 more points from the fight.
Major screwup at CARDOW HUNTERS. QUICK STINGER lost 17 points to BUCKY. Some new
strategies, perhaps? Maybe QUICK STINGER will provide more easy wins... What a role
model for LAPUR's young 'uns! LEXINGTON becomes Duelmaster, but don't bother to
fight no more! I can barely restrain my enthusiam for BLACK SAMURAI's outstanding
member, Duelmaster ENOSHIMA. Advice to fighters with a 1 will--give up fighting!
Speaking of cowardly avoiders and unfair challenges... The most avoided team
was EQUESTORS. In my day, no team with a 530-559-43 would scare me off! What's the
problem, BLACK SAMURAI? What do people see in STONETOOTH? His 11-10-0? CARDOW
HUNTERS ain't talkin', but he's got 50 points.
There have been some calls to lengthen the time limit. Do you want the fighters
to walk away, or not? How long have I been here? I got people to see, places to
go...
Many other cities have retirement homes for aged warriors. Any plans here?
LAPUR is a nice place to live, but I don't like to live in nice places. Time for my
medication, so I'll leave now. Practice, practice, practice!-- Olaf Modeen

My fellow duelists I come before you bearing a sad and unfortunate message.
Several months ago our group, the Vendetta Cartel, had lost contact with one of our
friends. Since he was in contact or correspondence on an almost daily basis there
was concern amongst us. With some research two of our members discovered why contact
was lost with him.
On November 10, 2004, Richard Hammes was taken from us in a senseless act of
violence during a robbery attempt at a friend's store where he sometimes worked. He
was watching the store so his friend could go home to tend to his son who had taken
ill.  You may have known Rich as Abarsis, The Slaughter Priest ; richh10 on the RT;
or gameogre on the Duel2 messageboard. You may not have known that he spent 13 years
serving the United States in the Navy.
Rich dearly loved this game and all it encompassed. He may not have been the
best or most experienced manager but he loved to interact with others and was quick
to offer advice whenever anyone asked for help. He was always kind and gracious and
tried to strengthen our game, often by helping new players feel welcome or give them
a chance to compete. With his prolific posting I know that I am simply speaking the
obvious about what he did for our game. Many, like me, were drawn to him, perhaps
for his kind nature or his sense of humor, and it appears he lived his life as he
played this game. Always willing to help or do right by others.
I realize that he had many friends outside the VC so I will include the link to
the news story in case any of his other friends would like to know more of what
happened. We're all dealt a hand in life but it's not the strength of the hand
you're dealt but rather how you play it that really matters. Rich played his hand to
the very best of his human ability and for this I admire him greatly. I know we all
choose to like or dislike managers but I believe deep down we are all good and
decent, in this game, and will drop party (alliance) lines and will show the proper
respect.

Rich was taken from us all to soon and with so much left to offer the community
around him. He spoke of a desire to run a contest on the Duel2 site which I hope to
uphold in his name. Some of the people I have spoken with think it would be a nice
gesture to do one final good act in Rich's name, though it could never match what he
would've done within his community, for his community of San Diego. I hope that with
this contest we might raise a little money to donate to an appropriate charity within
San Diego in his name.
In conclusion I send a message to Rich:
"Rich, though I'm sure you gathered this I never really told you how much I
admired you and what a friend I considered you. I thank you for being my voice of
reason and always reminding me of why we both loved this game so much! You have
taught me one final valuable lesson in learning more of you. There are things far
more valuable in life than material possessions such as character and kindness. That
nothing going on in your life means that you cannot find a way to be kind and giving
to others. We always spoke of meeting someday and until we finally do know that you
will live on in with me and the rest of your brothers and sisters in the Cartel:
Master Darque, Kat, Bum, Sensei Jan, Maximillian, Hammer, Fizban, Firehawk, Phat
Phat. You increased all of our enjoyment of this game, you were a true ambassador of
Duelmasters, and the game will not be quite the same without you. A farewell battle
cry from the ZalCon: 'Confusion to our enemies'. May your soul rest in peace, my
friend."
Should anyone wish to correspond about Rich feel free to contact myself, or
anyone else within the Vendetta Cartel.

Be it known throughout Alastari that Hammer is no longer a member of the
Vendetta Cartel alliance.
A difference of opinion with another highly respected member of the VC due to my
recent vocal actions in DM 47 can only be resolved by my resignation from the VC as
of January 29, 2005.
I leave of my own accord, in good standing with all members and with no hard
feelings towards anyone in the Vendetta Cartel.
There was a time when I felt that my membership in the VC made the alliance
stronger. I know that my resignation today makes the Vendetta Cartel a stronger
alliance with my absence. -- Hammer
