Tyrai handed Bindi two torches.
"There is moonlight enough to see," the Croc protested, "and these will make us
more visible."
"And they'll keep you warm, a little."
"Oh." Bindi glanced at the two flames and nodded. "I guess that's worth the
added visibility. Lead on, then."
The arenamistress nodded once and set off along the beach, keeping to the higher
edge near the forest. Bindi followed, hearing the sounds of her own feet crunching
on the stones but no sound from Tyrai. How could she walk so silently? Perhaps it
was something to do with her shape-shifting ability, but so far as the Croc could
tell, Tyrai had not changed into the form of a cat.
Shrugging that aside as a mystery that couldn't be solved now and probably
didn't matter much, keeping the torches with their warmth as close as she could
without burning herself, Bindi followed. The pace was fast, difficult to maintain
where rocks turned under her feet and roots reached out to trip her. She had a vague
memory of being able to drop to all fours and gain stability and speed over uneven
terrain, but this body was not shaped for that. Bits of driftwood, some of it
recognizable as parts of wrecked ships, loomed out of the darkness into the light of
her torches and then disappeared into the night behind her. In a different
situation, she would have poked around looking for any sort of useful flotsam. Not
tonight.
The long curve of the shore came to a point and swung back before Bindi expected
it. There had been nothing visible in the night to indicate that the narrow beach
didn't go on forever. Until the turn and the view along another stretch of beach.
Fragments of reddish light showed half way along it to another horn of land,
firelight through a thin band of trees, she decided. The camp where Agro and his
captor were spending the rest of this night. Her lips curled back from her teeth,
and her breath came out in a hiss of anger and eagerness. She picked up her pace,
crowding Tyrai.
"Don't push the pace," the arenamistress warned. "It'll do on go to get there
out of breath and tired."
"How can you be so cold? Agro could be suffering tortures, he could--"
"I have been a hunter in my day," Tyrai said. "I know what I'm doing."
"But--"
"As to the possible travails of your friend, we will not help him if we have no
strength to fight with when we get there. If that is the impostor's camp."
"It is." Bindi's conviction came from something she didn't understand, maybe
from a simple need for it to be Agro ahead. "It cannot be anyone else out here."
"Probably not," Tyrai agreed, "but we can't be sure till we get closer." She
half-drew her sword and let it slip back into its scabbard. "I wish I had a bow...."
"I will have my CLAWS on that monster," Bindi hissed. "I will bite its throat
out!"
DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
Wendy, what were you THINKING to go losing to me like that? Why, I'm not only
the Duel2Dude, but I have a WINNING record today! This is ridiculous.
Stonetooth
P.S. Although it if it leads to my graduation, I can stand it being ridiculous.
SPY REPORT
Greetings, Warriors of LAPUR. Allow this humble servant Novgorodny Vir to give
you a respite from the fights in the form of this Spyreport. EQUESTORS had cause to
celebrate, after MARIUS got 16 points by beating WENDY. WENDY certainly had a
baffled expression on hers face, after losing to MARIUS and losing 10 points in the
process! Now I can't insult TETRICUS, as he has gloriously dueled to the top. Oh
great new Duelmaster!!! (Stop me if I lay it on too thick) Word has it one team in
LAPUR is using psychics to predict wins. They lead a charmed life!
A Zenmaster once told me, 'Does not the spinning wheel turn? And do not the
little birds cry out?' Any ideas? Is it charming personality? Conversational
abilities? Good oral hygiene? Whatever it is, POSTUMUS is the most challenged
warrior. Place your bets! MURRY is the long shot of the week: they challenged MAD
DOG, up by 28. Fixed fights? Paybacks? Blind luck? Whatever, MURRY challenged MAD
DOG, MURRY the underdog by 28 points.
Like the wind whispering among the pines, do hearest I many disquieting rumors.
Oh hard! that to strike a flame, the match itself must needs be wasting!
Do not think spyreporting in LAPUR is the highlight of my life. Keep those
sands bloody and the buzzards fat! Can anything compare to the pleasure of writing
Spyreports for LAPUR? On that giddy note I take my leave-- Novgorodny Vir
