That was a point in her favor. Bindi dropped both torches as the reached the edge of the trees, driving their heads into the sand to put out the flames. She would stay warm enough for long enough to do what had to be done, and they could always make another fire later. She wanted her hands free, and flexed them as she imagined using them on the impostor and anyone else who got in her way. That golem was not metal, and the flesh would rip under her claws. Tyrai put a hand on the Croc's arm. "No rushing blindly in," the arenamistress whispered. "I want to kill--" "So do I, but I don't want to BE killed in the process. I'll go first and check to make sure there are no other enemies around, then we go in." Bindi hissed annoyance but let the warmblood lead off. And followed closely on her heels. Tyrai thought too much, that was her problem. The time for thinking was past. This was the time for tearing throats out. The warmbloods were too soft, to fragile, so they had to develop sneaky ways of hunting. They circled through the trees--half-circled, anyway. There weren't enough trees to make a full circle. Bindi breathed in through her mouth, tasting the air. It was wet and cold, and she missed the scents of...she wasn't sure what she was missing, only that it wasn't here. All she could smell was woodsmoke. Was the warmth of a fire worth losing the richness of scent? Of course, without warmth, she might die in this cold, but she didn't have to STAY here in this horrid climate. She could go...home. Or south. Or somewhere warm. Tyrai held out her arm, stopping the Croc, then moved close enough to whisper, "Nishtar is there!" "Good! We can kill him, too," Bindi growled. "Has the cold made you that stupid? Nishtar is a magician, he's DANGEROUS. We don't know what he can do, and we couldn't fight it if we DID know. We--" "Nishtar is our enemy. I will kill him." "Wait--" Bindi was tired of waiting, and Nishtar was, when you came down to it, only another warmblood. She could kill warmbloods. Her hands flexed, and she felt her own strength. Oh, yes, she COULD kill them. She HAD killed them and she would kill more. She shoved Tyrai out of her path and charged forward into the hut. Agro was tied up in a corner, with a narrow dark man bending over him, a man with pointed ears and rich clothes who must be Nishtar, effective ruler of Monuntial. The impostor, wearing Tyrai's appearance, was closer to the door, on the near side of the fire. Bindi's charge took her straight into the impostor, and she swept her claws across it, pushing it away. If she damaged or killed it, fine, but Agro was the important one here. She would free her teammate first, and they would kill the others together. The dark man turned toward her and his hands moved, little flicking gestures, and he said words she didn't know. The vibration of the words was like being hit by pounding surf. When had she experienced pounding surf? Her thoughts scrambled around in her head, and she didn't recognize them. Her limbs jerked and twitched. She fell toward the fire and couldn't stop herself. Something screeched behind her, a sound that no human throat had ever made. Something crashed into her before she hit the floor of the hut and the fire, and she rolled away to the side. Bindi tried to get her arms and legs under her so that she could stand, but they didn't seem to move right. The dark man was shaping another spell. Bindi managed to roll into his legs and disrupt his concentration. He kicked her, snarling something about "stupid lizards." From her new position, she could see the impostor--bleeding from claw wounds across its side--struggling with some kind of large cat. The Croc didn't know what kind of cat, it seemed familiar but not clearly one or another type of feline. It was more than a match for the impostor, though, and that was good. The impostor was being shredded. Its blood was orange and its torn flesh gray. There was a word to describe such things, but she couldn't think of it. It was just something made of magic, and an enemy, and she was glad it was being destroyed. Magic flashed around the room like angry wasps. It was aimed at the cat, at least, she thought it was aimed at the cat. But it kept missing and bouncing off other things. Which were starting to spark and smolder. The magic was going to set this whole building on fire. Which proved that warmbloods were just as stupid as anybody. They would all be burned up here, but at least they'd be warm.... The dark man shouted something, and more people came into the hut. Or maybe they were magic things like the impostor. Bindi couldn't tell. By now, she didn't much care. Two of them grabbed her and dragged her out into the night; she saw that two others were dragging Agro. Well, maybe they would both survive. For a while. There was an explosion of sound, heat, light, and the hut burst apart behind them. And a howl that sounded triumphant. Maybe it meant Tyrai had killed the impostor. Bindi hoped so, but she couldn't turn to see what was happening there, or move at all now. Nishtar's servants were tying her hands and feet together, and she could barely feel it. Maybe she was finally freezing to death. They slid a pole between her limbs and raised it, and she came up with it, swinging from the ropes around her wrists and ankles. Annoyance warmed her briefly. She was being treated like a game animal brought back from the hunt. She didn't have the energy to struggle or protest right now, but later on, when she got warm, she would rip these things apart, and eat Nishtar's liver. SPY REPORT I was going on vacation, see? Surf, sun... But what do those bums say? "Hit the road, Debby Tonte. LAPUR needs a spyreport." Oh, well. MVP award for MIGHTY MOUSER? ARENA FELINES' proud of him after beating POSTUMUS and getting 22 points. Talk about yer major upsets! POSTUMUS' match with MIGHTY MOUSER cost him a loss of 11 points! Don't you think the Duelmaster is being unfair? I think TETRICUS should let CHARLIE be Duelmaster for a while, without fighting about it. Is the Duelmaster really being a real snob to his teammates? Don't ask me! So just why would someone becomes a warrior anyway? It can't be for these really neat Spyreports can it? Like, is STONETOOTH popular, or what? He was challenged the most in all of LAPUR! He's got a 19-18-0, is that good? Some fights are really unfair. How do you think STONETOOTH feels about being challenged by LEXINGTON, 58 points above him? If LEXINGTON can't beat a warrior 58 points below himself, that he CHALLENGED, he oughtta be selling food in the stands! People were asking me did NASHVILLE REALLY challenge QUICK STINGER? (all right, maybe they didn't, but it sounded good!) It wasn't a spectacular fight, or anything, but QUICK STINGER wants me to write about it since she was overcame by NASHVILLE. Satisfied? What does a fighter fight for? I mean, the crowds don't give a hoot if someone gets killed. Not after four more fights. What if they had a fight and nobody showed up? I'd be out of a job, that's what!!! I really didn't, you know, study when I was a kid. Who would've guessed I'd be a famous Spyreporter? I'm getting tired of writing this stuff, so I'm calling it quits. Remember you guys, ease up sometimes! Chill out!
