Magic flashed around the room like angry wasps. It was aimed at the cat which
might be Tyrai, at least, Bindi thought it was aimed at the cat. But it kept missing
and bouncing off other things. Which were starting to spark and smolder. The magic
was going to set this whole building on fire. Which proved that warmbloods were just
as stupid as anybody. They would all be burned up here, but at least they'd be
warm.....
The dark man shouted something, and more people came into the hut. Or maybe
they were magic things like the impostor. Bindi couldn't tell. By now, she didn't
much care. Two of them grabbed her and dragged her out into the night; she saw that
two others were dragging Agro. Well, maybe they would both survive. For a while.
There was an explosion of sound, heat, light, and the hut burst apart behind
them. And a howl that sounded triumphant. Maybe it meant Tyrai had killed the
impostor. Bindi hoped so, but she couldn't turn to see what was happening there, or
move at all now.
Nishtar's servants were tying her hands and feet together, and she could barely
feel it. Maybe she was finally freezing to death. They slid a pole between her
limbs and raised it, and she came up with it, swinging from the ropes around her
wrists and ankles. Annoyance warmed her briefly. She was being treated like a game
animal brought back from the hunt. She didn't have the energy to struggle or protest
right now, but later on, when she got warm, she would rip these things apart, and eat
Nishtar's liver.
Because she was being carried feet first, and her head was dangling, Bindi could
see behind but not toward the front. Well, she didn't need to see forward, she knew
that she and Agro were being taken to Monuntial. The magician Nishtar probably had
something nasty in mind for them. But they would foil him. He was a mere warmblood,
an elf, even! By the First Egg of the Heart, he would NOT defeat them! And then the
Crocs would go back to the warm and lush world she half-remembered, where life was
good. She stared blankly backward into the night, simply waiting.
And so was the only person in the group to see the great cat padding along
behind them. It was Tyrai, she was sure. At some time, Bindi had heard that people
who change shape can't change size, and this cat was the size of the arenamistress.
But more dangerous to Bindi's eyes. A warmblood still, but this was a predator.
Humans...Bindi didn't know what the Heart of the Swamp had made them for, but they
were not natural predators. Anyone could see that. They had no claws, and their
teeth were pitiful; they couldn't kill without making themselves weapons to do it
with. But the cat was a predator, and she, too, hated Nishtar. So she was in some
degree an ally.
That was a strange concept. Bindi had the feeling that in their own place, the
Crocs never had allies. Whether this was because they didn't need them, or because
no one would join causes with them, she didn't know. It probably didn't matter.

It seemed a long road to Monuntial. Bindi had expected it to take no more than
three or four hours, but the servants carrying her went on and on. The cat Tyrai
followed, on and on. The sun came up, warming her. The cat fell back a little and
moved through the partial concealment of tall grasses beside the road.
Tall grasses? The peninsula on which Monuntial stood was all forest and field,
so far as Bindi knew. Tall grasses belonged on plains. Didn't they? Maybe these
were reeds such as grew along the water's edge? After all, the peninsula had water
all around it. But she couldn't smell water nearby. A little, yes, but not the vast
expanse of the Storm Sea. It was a puzzle, and the Croc would have welcomed the
chance to ask somebody to explain it.
She twisted her head just enough to look at the servant carrying the rear end of
her pole. By daylight it looked less human than it had at night, and the scent of it
was strange. Its eyes were round and green with no pupil and no white showing, and
its narrow face was dark gray, without expression. So it was another creation of
magic, as the impostor had been. A recollection of gossip on Niatoli came to her,
how the magical foundation of all Ghea was eroding and spells were difficult to cast.
If this was so, why was Nishtar wasting his energies making magical servants? Did
that mean that the elf was so powerful he didn't have to worry about the waning of
magic, or that he was careless? Did he have magic to use freely, or would he run out
if pressed?
One of the servant-things carrying Bindi stumbled, stumbled again, and fell.
The other one floundered under the full weight the Croc and the sudden imbalance, and
then it fell, too. The cat flashed forward, swiped in passing at the ropes holding
Bindi to the pole, and bounded on to leap onto the back of one of the servants
carrying Agro. A few tugs broke Bindi's weakened ropes, and she lurched to her feet,
looking around for an enemy. Looking for Nishtar.
The elf was nowhere to be seen. Only the servants, mostly dead now, the two
Crocs, and the Tyrai-cat. And a sea of grasses on all sides.

                                      SPY REPORT

I can't believe the violence in LAPUR! I still haven't told Mom I'm writing
Spyreports. She'd have a cow! Well, here we go... MVP award for ACCO? CROC FILES'
proud of him after beating MAD DOG and getting 16 points. Talk about yer big time
losers! QUICK STINGER got smashed by MOLLY, and lost 6 points! This Duelmaster is
like something else! WENDY stopped TETRICUS dead in his tracks! Who was the wiseguy
that said LAPUR's Duelmaster was paying for drinks at The Burning Tree? Don't look
at me!
I gotta admit I haven't been in "deep con caves" with any spies. Really, I just
wing this stuff. Can CARDOW HUNTERS' STONETOOTH be more popular than me? He was
challenged the most, but is that really the same?
Challenges, revenges, Bloodfeuds. All LAPUR ever talks about is fighting! Me,
I'm more laid back. What if they had a fight and nobody showed up? I'd be out of a
job, that's what!!!
I really didn't, you know, study when I was a kid. Who would've guessed I'd be
a famous Spyreporter? I'm getting tired of writing this stuff, so I'm calling it
quits. Remember you guys, ease up sometimes! Chill out! Later, Debby Tonte

Lord Protector Tetricus -- I don't know how anybody can expect ME to give you

who said that, and get them from him/her/it. I'll watch and cheer. -- Chetam, odd-

Nashville -- Plenty dark enough, but where's the glory? -- Walks Softly
P.S. I hate that "serious treatment" business. I'd rather have 'em telling jokes.
