Agro shook himself and looked around, then turned to Bindi. "Any idea where we
are?"
Bindi looked at the Tyrai-cat.
The beast seemed to shrug, and then its shape began to flow like wax in the sun.
After a startled moment, Bindi looked away, swallowing. Eventually, there was
something that looked human. Nude, of course, but as an arenamistress, Tyrai was so
fit that there was nothing in her shape for her to be ashamed of. Well, scars. But
everyone who fought in the arena had scars. Bindi and Agro did, too.
Agro snarled, anger without words, and reached for the sword that was not there
at his waist, then flexed his claws.
"No!" Bindi said, "she's a friend--truly a friend."
Agro's muscles bunched. "You betrayed--"
"It was a golem," Bindi said. "An imposter."
"And a dead one now," Tyrai added. She faced the two Crocs calmly, unafraid.
But poised and ready to do...almost anything, Bindi thought. An arenamistress would
have to be a deadly fighter.
"Do you know where we are?" Bindi asked.
"Home." Then the arenamistress shrugged and laughed a little. "But a long way
from home. This is our own right world. But I think we must be somewhere on the
Vaalod. A large plain, more or less," she added when both shook their heads. "I
would guess that the home of your people lies to the west, possibly the northwest,
where the great marshes are. Mine is northeast, the Alnoran Peninsula. I don't know
which is farther. We could be anywhere on the Vaalod, and it's huge!"
Agro had relaxed, a little, while they were talking, and now he said, "We split
up then? Going different ways and all."
Tyrai frowned and looked around at the grass, up at the sky. "No, I don't think
that would be a good idea. The Vaalod is not a safe place, for all it looks innocent
enough at the moment. Three can fight better than two or one. And still might not
be enough, but three is what we've got."
The big Croc tensed again, shaking off Bindi's restraining hand. "I suppose you
want us to escort you home?"
"Better the other way," Tyrai said. "If I get some clothes, I can pass as
human. You can't, so better to get you back into your right place first." She
looked around again. "And better to get moving, instead of standing around in plain
sight like targets!"
Agro grunted and did a scan of his own. They stood on a faint track, one could
hardly call it a road, that ran through tall grasses. There were no landmarks that
he could see. "Which way?"
Tyrai pointed off to the left, away from the track on which the golems had been
carrying them. "That way. Can't you smell the water?"
"Leave this road?" Bindi asked.
"As fast as we can. Roads have people, and we don't need to meet any people
right now." Tyrai plunged into the grass, practically swimming through the shoulder-
high plants. "Besides," she called over her shoulder, "this was a road Nishtar must
have chosen, and do we want to meet the people he does business with?"
"We could eat them," Agro muttered, pushing into the grasses. "I'm hungry."
"You're always hungry," Bindi said.
"Yeah, and so are you."
Pushing through the grasses was hard work. They didn't form a solid
impenetrable sod, for which Bindi was devoutly thankful, but they grew thickly
anyway. They varied from chest high to over the head, and even when a breeze rustled
the tops, there was no air moving lower down. The leaves rubbed against her, scraped
against her till she was raw, sometimes seemed to actively hold her back. She didn't
like them. You couldn't see much when the grass was at its shortest, and less the
taller it got. The whole place had a disturbing feel to it. Probably it was the
grasses, but.... "How far have we come?"
"Couple of miles," Tyrai answered from somewhere just ahead. "If we're lucky."
"That's all?" Agro's voice came from her right. "It's been hours!"
"This is bad country to cross without a horse," Tyrai said. "If we get a chance
to acquire horses, we should take it."
"Acquire. Agro sounded like he was tasting the word. "Isn't there some other
term for that?"
"Steal. Borrow. Find. Buy if we had any money. Without horses, our lives
aren't worth much here."
"Us Crocs have never gotten on well with horses," Agro said. "People say horses
are dumb, but I guess they know we'd rather eat 'em than ride 'em."
"Horses aren't thrilled with my people, either." There was a slither and the
sound of a sliding fall, a grunt and a soft oath. "Be careful," Tyrai said.
"There's a sudden slope. And about time!"
Bindi barely had time to grab the grasses and keep her feet under her as the
ground dropped away. "Why is this good?" she asked breathlessly.
"Means we're close to a stream. I could stand to drink, and you two probably
need to wet down?"
"Yes!" Both Crocs started to push forward, skidding recklessly down the slope.
"Wait!" Tyrai said, grabbing Bindi, who was nearer to her. "We have to be quiet
and go carefully, there might be people down there--"
"Good." Agro pushed past her. "I'm hungry!"
At the bottom of the slope was a line of trees, and a stream, almost a small
river. And people. A dozen, maybe fifteen, lean and swarthy. Mounted, armored,
armed. Hostile. When they spotted the three from Alastari, they swung their horses
into a line and charged through the grass, which was unfortunately thinner here. The
ends of the line moved faster, turning it into a crescent, then passing their quarry
and completing the encirclement.
SPY REPORT
Ready for some action-packed adventure, some thrills, chills and spills? Well
fergit it, cause this is the Spyreport for LAPUR. MVP award for SNOWSHOE? CARDOW
HUNTERS' proud of him after beating EMBEZZLING SCRIBE and getting 16 points. Talk
about yer major upsets! MURRY's match with QUICK STINGER cost him a loss of 9
points! The Duelmaster isn't going to stop just cause he's Number One! STONETOOTH
knows this. He was challenged by the Duelmaster. Don't you think the Duelmaster is
being unfair? I think CHARLIE should let STONETOOTH be Duelmaster for a while,
without fighting about it. I hear the top team insists all their warriors get nine
hours sleep. They want photogenic fighters for PR photos.
I gotta admit I haven't been in "deep con caves" with any spies. Really, I just
wing this stuff. ARENA FELINES was the most avoided team. Is a 4-4-0 record really
that scary? I don't know what PHILANTHROPISTS' been doing. They certainly haven't
been accepting many fights from ARENA FELINES, that's fer sher. Like, is STONETOOTH
popular, or what? He was challenged the most in all of LAPUR! He's got a 22-21-0,
is that good? MAKADOS must not be a good enough fighter to get in fair fights. He
challenged CICERO. 12 is a big difference. (Well, that's what they tell me.) I
thought MAKADOS showed great skill and promise when he overcame CICERO. All right,
so I slept through it! Big deal!
What does a fighter fight for? I mean, the crowds don't give a hoot if someone
gets killed. Not after four more fights. What if they had a fight and nobody showed
up? I'd be out of a job, that's what!!!
I really didn't, you know, study when I was a kid. Who would've guessed I'd be
a famous Spyreporter? I gotta leave. LAPUR is like such a dump, and you guys smell
too much! I had a fun time, see you later-- Debby Tonte
