"We can't fight fifteen men on horses," Agro said. His deep voice came out a
growl, dark with anger and frustration. He and his two companions were now standing
back to back, all of them unarmed and unarmored but ready to do what they could in
defense. "Can you talk to them, Tyrai?"
"Not to these. These are the Fair Lords." She spat. "A kind of lesser elf.
Half-elves, in a way. Like Nishtar."
"These are Nishtar's men, then?" Bindi asked. Her voice was lighter than
Agro's, but just as angry.
"I don't know...maybe not. They aren't wearing his livery, at least," Tyrai
said.
Bindi could feel energy crackling from the shapeshifter and glanced sideways.
Tyrai's hands were flexing as though she was baring claws. "If you change back to
cat form, will you be able to fight your way free? Even if we can't get away, if
you're free you can rescue us later."
"I don't know. These are elves. They can probably tell what I am. Worth a
try, though."
The elves had them surrounded and were now riding in a single-file circle around
them, faster and faster.
"Trying to make us dizzy," Agro muttered.
The racing circle of horsemen began to spiral inward toward them.
Tyrai screamed, groaned, staggered backward against her companions. Panting,
she said, "They're suppressing my ability to change shape."
Bindi could feel the woman shaking before she straightened again. "Too bad, but
worth a try. I guess it would have been too easy. Heroes in the sagas never have it
easy in the beginning...."
"Oh, gods, let us NOT be heroes in a saga!" Tyrai gasped. "Let us just be lucky
travelers."
"Unlucky is more like it," Agro snarled as the elves suddenly turned and closed
in quickly. "At least they can't all fifteen pile on us at once--" He finished the
sentence with a grunt as the first elf got close enough to poke forward with a spear.
The Croc grabbed the spear and jerked, pulling the elf out of his saddle--didn't the
fool know enough to let go? Jerked the elf close and opened his throat with a sweep
of claws.
Bindi lacked Agro's size and strength, so her tactics had to be different. But
she had no human fondness for horses, to her, they were just game animals. She
grabbed the nearest horse by its nose and clamped down a clawed grip, letting that
rider's spear go over her shoulder, reached for his leg with her other hand. There
was an artery in the leg that would bleed a man dry in minutes, if she could reach
it, or the tendons that would cripple him, or...something.
Bindi couldn't see what Tyrai was doing, but she could hear the sound of battle.
An arenamistress, even unarmed, was a dangerous foe. She maimed her first opponent,
dragging him off his horse in the process, and started to turn toward another. Maybe
they would be able to escape after all! But the man on the ground grabbed her ankle,
and someone behind her thumped her on the back of the head with....
She folded up, her last thought a fear that the horses would trample her.
Her head ached fiercely, and her shoulders hurt, and she was so thirsty. She
blinked and discovered that she was walking. Agro was in front of her, wearing an
iron collar with a chain attached to it, and it extended back and hooked to a collar
around her own neck, and his hands were tied behind him, and so were hers...that
explained why her shoulders hurt. And probably Tyrai was chained behind HER, so they
were all caught. The chain in front of Agro was fastened to one of the saddles, and
they were being towed along at a stumbling trot.
They were moving along a meager track through the grass, which was shorter
because they were among trees, moving along a stream. She could hear the water and
smell, though not see it, and she desperately wanted to sink into that water, and to
drink it. She passed a dry tongue over her lips. It didn't seem like much time had
passed, or much distance, either. This was probably the stream they'd been headed
toward.
She tried to think calmly about their situation, the way she was sure Agro was
doing. It didn't seem likely that their captors would let them talk, so that meant
each would have to think for herself. Or himself, in Agro's case. Chained and tied
as they were, most likely they were helpless. At least, their captors probably
thought so. But were they? Their options were limited, yes, but--
One of the riders shouted something, pointing to the right, as they emerged from
the trees. Bindi looked in that direction.
Four people on the shoulder of the hill, a woman and three men. None of them
were Crocs, but they didn't resemble these elves who had captured them, so they might
be-- Yes, they were taking a defensive stance. But there were only four of them,
against...she glanced around quickly, twelve of these elves. "Fair Lords," Tyrai had
called them. So they'd killed three! Good. Still the odds for this new group
weren't good.
SPY REPORT
The sages err'd not in their foretelling of a god descending upon LAPUR, for I,
Novgorodny Vir, have returned! Practice pays for SHANGGAR, who pummelled AMBITIOUS
GUARD, to pocket 16 points. Win some, lose some. Speaking of which, MAKADOS was
winsome, after beating SNOWSHOE and seeing him lose 4 points. QUICK STINGER found
out that LAPUR isn't a democracy. You've gotta be the best to be Duelmaster here!
Word has it one team in LAPUR is using psychics to predict wins. They lead a charmed
life!
A Zenmaster once told me, 'Does not the spinning wheel turn? And do not the
little birds cry out?' Any ideas? Everyone is famous for fifteen minutes, and
STONETOOTH is it right now. Most challenged warrior. Isn't CARDOW HUNTERS proud!
Ah, the duel! The roar of the oppenent, the smell of the crowd! Questions are
being raised about the disposing of severed body parts in the arena. A certain
tavern in LAPUR would I avoid!
Leave me now, you base fools! As the seasons change, and the creatures of the
wild change also, so do I feel a yearning to leave this place. LAPUR, I leave you
now. The Duelmaster has agreed to foot my bill at The Burning Tree. 'Til next
time-- Novgorodny Vir

Charlie -- I'd call you a lucky dog, except, of course, that you aren't a dog. A
win, the title, and agelessness as a constant warrior on the Isle. What more can any
man ask? -- Stonetooth
P.S. Except for, say, an interesting career, full of intellectual and creative
challenges....
Murry -- What splendid skills! My great thanks to you. -- Quick Stinger
Wendy -- Walk I ever so softly, I just can't sneak up on you, can I? -- Walks Softly
and carries chocolate
Shirely -- It amazes me that you aren't a Croc. -- Ladybug
P.S. I shudder to think what kind of a temper a Rirorni man must be in after being
named "Shirely." People are bound to read it as "Shirley."
P.P.S. Why would anyone WANT to get fuzzy?
I don't understand this business with the Embezzling Scribe. What am I supposed to
do about it? -- Snowshoe
Lord Protector Charlie -- I don't have any lands, and if I DID, I wouldn't give them
to a lizard! Outrageous! -- Chetam, odd-job man of Lapur arena
