As expected, the horses were not happy to be ridden by crocs, nor did they like
Tyrai much. But their new companions were used to working with horses and angry
enough about the risk their friend was taking to force the beasts to obedience. They
had a dozen horses and were supposed to use the extras to switch off and get better
speed. Bindi wasn't sure that would work, but no point in arguing it. And two pack
horses carrying whatever the slavers had for supplies and all the gear that had been
stripped off them. Tyrai had insisted that they strip all the bodies, pointing out
that if the clothes and weapons weren't needed, they could be sold or traded for
supplies later. In fact, everybody in the group seemed full of plans except for
herself and Agro.
That worried her. They should have a plan, too, or they'd end up doing whatever
these other people told them to and never doing what was right for themselves. Of
course, they didn't know what was right....
"This isn't helping us get to Nishtar," Agro growled, riding beside her.
"We aren't in the same world as he is--"
"Maybe not right now, but he sent us here, so he must have contacts. We should
find them. Or else find out how to go back where we came from." Agro's hands opened
and closed hungrily. "We shouldn't be following a bunch of warmbloods."
"These people have helped us," Bindi said.
     "For their own reasons."
"Well, of course! People always do things for their own reasons, unless they're
slaves. But that doesn't mean they aren't genuine allies."
Agro growled something that Bindi didn't catch. Then he said, "It just doesn't
feel right, being allied with warmbloods. They're meat."
"It wouldn't be right to eat sentients...would it?"
"I know a prey animal when I see one," Agro muttered. "No fangs, no claws, no
horns, no hard scales, not fast enough to get away...prey."
Bindi shrugged uncomfortably. It was true, what he said, that humans didn't
look like hunters. But... "Their weapons are their brains," she said, "the way they
can turn almost anything into a weapon. And their ability to work together. It
wouldn't hurt us to learn from them."
"We're predators already," Agro said. He flashed his claws in front of her and
bared his fangs. "We don't need their patchwork skills!"
"Our claws and fangs won't stop them wiping us out if they decide to. What good
did they do us when we met those slavers? Sure, we killed a couple, but we got
captured just the same."
Agro didn't answer, but she could see him resisting her argument. She thought
of human women she had met and how exasperated they had been sometimes when trying to
get their males to think. She could sympathize with that now; this was the first
time she'd ever tried to change Agro's attitude. Was it worth it? Yes, it had to
be. Her memory was incomplete, but she seemed to recall that her people had always
lived scattered over their territory, coming together only to mate. No mutual
defense, no shared projects. And that humans and elves had been pushing into the
edges of their land--
A longing for "home," for that beautiful land of water and islands and reeds and
moss-hung trees and giant ferns and fish and ducks and....
She pushed that longing away firmly. It was the core of her desire and would
give her strength, but wallowing in the memory would weaken her for what she had to
do. If the crocs could not work together to defend their home, they would be driven
out of it and killed.
Bindi saw the blond ride away from the head of the line, angling up the slope.
Her hand went to the sword she'd taken from her captor. Something was happening, and
if it meant a fight, she would be ready.
Tyrai reined her horse back and fell in beside the croc. "Rughal's going to
take a look from the top of the ridge," she said. "He thinks there's a lake up
ahead. If we seem to have gotten clear away from the bigger group of slavers, we'll
stop there and rest."
A lake! Bindi felt her spirits rising at the thought. To submerge, to hunt
fish, to roll in the mud.... "Who are these people, though? How did they come to be
here?"
"Pretty much the same kind of deal that brought us. A magical trap and a Gate
from Alastari. The one up front now--" it was the man that looked like he might be
Adantri-- "Ashon Chang, he's a gladiator, and so is the woman who's trying to lead
them off our trail. The other two are friends they picked up along the way." She
grimaced. "I begin to think association with an arena is dangerous for more than
just the risks IN the arena. We seem to get into such tangled adventures."
Bindi snorted amusement. "At least the arena gives us some skills to survive
with."
"Circular argument," Tyrai said. "Oh, well."

The lake was not large, just a place where the little river widened behind a
natural dam. But it was big enough for both crocs to swim and hunt fish, and just
being able to submerge was a relief and a joy. She hadn't realized how dry her skin
had gotten, and how thirsty.
The humans, and despite what Tyrai had said she thought of the arenamistress as
a human also, were up on the slope where they could keep watch, and they seemed to be
arguing. It was probably something that would affect her and Agro, but right now,
she didn't care. Right now, she could rest.

                                      SPY REPORT

I can't believe the violence in LAPUR! I still haven't told Mom I'm writing
Spyreports. She'd have a cow! Well, here we go... Like, CROC FILES had to be so
embarrassed when they got kicked off #1 spot by CARDOW HUNTERS! Way to go CARDOW
HUNTERS! ARENA FELINES like really fought hard to move up to 5th from 8th. Way to
go! One team deserves special mention 'cause they moved up 1 after going 4-1-0.
Keep it up, CARDOW HUNTERS! MVP award for YEAR OF THE CAT? ARENA FELINES' proud of
him after beating AMBITIOUS GUARD and getting 16 points. Don't you think the
Duelmaster is being unfair? I think MOLLY should let QUICK STINGER be Duelmaster for
a while, without fighting about it. I hear the top team insists all their warriors
get nine hours sleep. They want photogenic fighters for PR photos.
AAARRGH!!! I HATE SPYREPORTING!!! Sorry. I just had to say it. For sure, I
was holding my breath when I found out MURRY challenged STONETOOTH. After all,
haven't CROC FILES and CARDOW HUNTERS had a long standing duel in LAPUR? It wasn't a
spectacular fight, or anything, but STONETOOTH wants me to write about it since he
overcame MURRY. Satisfied?
What does a fighter fight for? I mean, the crowds don't give a hoot if someone
gets killed. Not after four more fights. Like was that some Bloodfeud, or what?
(WALKS SOFTLY vs. ACCO, that is.) Fight, fight, fight. Is that all you guys can do?
Remember, blood on a purple robe may stain. Soak it in cold water, and hand
wash. I gotta leave. LAPUR is like such a dump, and you guys smell too much! Its
been really albendranius! Later, guys-- Debby Tonte

Molly -- Well, I certify your teeth as being of the best adamant. Ouch! --
Stonetooth
P.S. If you ever get tired of being a lizard and want to try mammalian life, I'd be
glad to show you around.

Murry -- I grant you the lack of fur, but you do purr nicely when I scratch your
belly. -- Quick Stinger
P.S. And turn over and display your belly for the scratching at the least hint I'd
be willing. Are you that eager to be scratched, or are you lulling me into
carelessness?

Shanggar -- A-HA! I just KNEW I could sneak up on SOMEBODY if I kept trying. Thank
you! I appreciated the chance to "show my stuff." -- Walks Softly

Shirely -- My, you Rirorni do have strange names! Even stranger than ours, and
though Uncle Wolf is lazy about getting our races changed, WE are Rirorni, too. All
of us. -- Ladybug
P.S. Of course, I am also half elven, but the other half, I promise you, is Rirorni.
P.P.S. Where does the "fuzzy" part come into this?

Izalor -- Drat. -- Snowshoe
P.S. I already knew I made a career error. But it was when I was born to a tribe of
Rirorni that had been decimated by the late War, not when I chose the arena life over
being a shepherd-for-hire.
