The Crocs lay side by side at the edge of the lake, in shallow water and mud.
It felt good.
Bindi thought she could have lain there, soaking in the comfort, all night. But
Agro was agitated, she could feel it in him. She swiveled her eyes enough to look at
him. "What?" she asked.
Agro submerged all the way and blew bubbles, his way of indicating that he was
thinking, or searching for words. Finally he lifted his head and turned to face her.
"We've just been following the warmbloods," he said. "We need a plan of our own.
Goals of our own." A gesture sent small waves rippling away. "More than just
catching Nishtar."
"You were the one who said--"
Agro shrugged higher out of the water. "I know. Catching Nishtar is important.
But there's got to be more than that. Catching Nishtar is... a dead end. We catch
him, we kill him, then what? We need a positive goal."
Bindi rolled over and looked up at him. "This is true. Do you have one?"
Agro shrugged and looked away. "One on one, we--any of our people, even the
half-grown kits--can kill any elf or human. We have, any time some hunter encroaches
on our territory. But they're going to come at us like a wave, like a storm, a mass
of them, and even if half of them die, they'll wipe us out completely."
Bindi sat up, water cascading off her shoulders. "Yes. I hadn't thought it out
that clearly, but... yes. It is our claws and our fangs that make us successful
predators, but for them, it is their ability to form packs. We can't beat them with
our weapons, but maybe if we took up theirs...?"
"I don't see what you mean."
"We crocs are mostly solitary. We don't work together. But maybe we should."
"It isn't done--"
"Times change, and we must change, too. Or become as we were, as they say we
were--nothing but beasts to do their bidding. Or see our whole people die until
there ARE no more crocs."
"That is--" Agro bit off whatever hot response he had been going to make and
was silent for several minutes. "That is a difficult task you set us, Bindi," he
said finally. "I don't think it's possible to get all the crocs working together.
At least, I don't see how it could be done."
Bindi dismissed that with a sweeping gesture. "We don't need them all. Let the
older ones keep to the older ways. The young ones will listen to us. We have been
places where few crocs have gone, and we are the only ones--the first ones, at least-
-to return. If the young ones are intelligent enough to see the danger, they will
hear us when we suggest new ways to meet that danger."
Agro stared into the twilight. "First we have to FIND our people. We only have
the warmbloods' word for it that we're headed in the right direction."
"Yes, and that's another thing we'll have to learn from them," Bindi said.
"Trust." She twisted to look toward the humans coming back from their private
conference. "They have made a decision," she said. "We need to hear it, and maybe
suggest... changes."
Agro surged out of the water and looked down at her. "What are you planning?"
Bindi smiled, which exposed a lot of teeth, but Agro was no warmblood to be put
off by teeth. "Wait and hear," she said. "If they are as honest as I believe, this
will work."

you, eh?

SPY REPORT
Greetings warriors! It is I, Zontani Sharp Eyes, here to bring report of the
clash and bustle of the weekly LAPUR games. The city has turned out in honor of
MOLLY, for with hers arena victory she may now lay claim to the highest position in
the city! Informants "close" to the city champion have told me that he never fights
without pantyhose on beneath his armor. Watch out!
I have been in deep conclave with my spies who watched all that has recently
transpired. Indeed there is much I would report. Mighty fighters cannot but expect
competition from those below. SNOWSHOE take warning! You have more than a few
enemies in LAPUR. A match that raised a few eyebrows at the games this week, it
seems that ACCO posted a challenge against the more highly recognized WALKS SOFTLY.
The results, you ask? Well, the firebrand ACCO beat WALKS SOFTLY. Remember
warriors, this is the discipline of steel.
Vendettas. Bloodied blades and broken spears. Indeed the city has seen more
than its fair share of red in recent times. Fate is a fickle mistress. She showers
the miserable with fortune but sets enemies against the victorious. Remember this!
If it were not for my skills as a spy I would have been mugged three times
already in LAPUR. Nice atmosphere you have here! More than a sharp eye must I keep,
indeed a stout pair of legs must I keep as well! The endless paths of Alastari await
me! Till next we meet remember - the pen is mightier than the sword, but a maul is a
different story!-- Zontani Sharp Eyes

Murry -- Ah, I knew you weren't up to your best standard today when I saw that your
nose was dry and hot. Poor furry purry one! I tried to make it as fast as I could.
Take a drink of water (no aspirins!) and call me in the morning. -- Quick Stinger
Connie -- It wasn't supposed to be like that! My two teammates defeated THEIR crocs,
and I was supposed to defeat MINE, but you did it wrong. You HIT me! I hate it when
that happens. It makes me feel like such a... soft, helpless little thing, and I'm
NOT. -- Snowshoe
And how much good will do you suppose it engenders when the local factory owners send
in a GOLEM to break a strike, eh? But the strike surely does get broken. -- Walks

P.S. But you see, I'm not a strike.
