The humans and the orc looked at each other for a moment, then all nodded.
"We'll do it," the not-Adantri said. "You've got a deal."
"And for our part," Bindi said, "we will help all we can, and try to persuade
our people, when we find them, also to help. So long as you understand that we can't
speak for them with certainty at this time."
"Understood. That bridge we will cross when we come to it," the not-Adantri
said.
Bindi had heard that idiom before and knew that it meant wait to deal with that
problem, but it still sounded silly to her ears. Given a choice between crossing a
bridge or swimming, a croc would always choose to swim. Perhaps, she mused, a croc
would say, "we'll swim that creek when we come to it"? She occasionally entertained
herself by trying to turn human sayings into something that would make sense to a
croc; sometimes she could, sometimes they wouldn't go. Not a surprise, that was just
a measure of how alien the one species was from the other.
"We should be on our way at first light," the light-haired human said. "There
are other people traveling westward. I have seen their dust during the day, and
their campfires were visible from the height," he gestured toward the cliff he'd
climbed, "once the sun set."
"Others...on our trail?" Agro demanded.
"No. Not following us or on the same trail we used," the human answered. "A
large group, big enough to be an army, to the north of us. They probably aren't
moving as fast as we have, but their course is parallel to ours, more or less."
"If I had to guess," the not-Adantri said, "it would be that an army of elves is
preparing to attack someone to the west." He glanced at the light-haired one. "You
did say that it was mostly elves along the big river to the east, didn't you?" When
the other man nodded, he went on, "That if there are more crocs to the west, they may
be the target."
The orc, who had been staring into the fire, now looked up. "If you saw their
dust, won't they see ours? Not our campfire, since we're down in the valley, but--"
"It's possible, but unlikely," the light-haired one said. "We don't make as
much dust as an army, and we'll be careful to make even less tomorrow than we did
today." He shrugged. "As much as we can do that--I think we should push ourselves,
make the best time we can. It should be possible to get ahead of the army by a day
or even two over the distance I'm guessing at. We could reach the swampy land before
it does."
"So as to be there for the attack? Sounds like a bad idea to me," Agro said.
"If we're in the clear, we should stay clear."
"No." Bindi turned to look up at Agro. "This is one of the things we need to
learn from humans, if our people are to survive. We need to learn to think of ALL
crocs, of what is good for all of us, instead of just our own needs and advantage.
If there are crocs who are about to be attacked, we should warn them and try to help
them." Agro looked down at her and made rumbling sounds in his throat but didn't
speak. She chose to take that as agreement, however reluctant, and turned back to
the others. "At first light, then, and," she grimaced, "we ride hard."

SPY REPORT
Greetings warriors! It is I, Zontani Sharp Eyes, here to bring report of the
clash and bustle of the weekly LAPUR games. ACCO caught the eye of many in the
gladiatorial commission as he skillfully bested WALKS SOFTLY and was awarded 18
points in recognition. In one of the week's more notable duels, YEAR OF THE CAT put
down MURRY, causing him to lose 6 points of recognition in the process. Who here was
not present for the title fight this week as MOLLY boldly challenged QUICK STINGER in
order to strive for the Duelmasters honors? Not for nothing has QUICK STINGER in the
past laid claim to the Duelmaster's throne, and this week she's proven hers combat
skill yet again. Heed this! A seer has warned that if exactly 6 die in duels this
week, the whole city shall perish! Just remember...5 or 7!
I have been in deep conclave with my spies who watched all that has recently
transpired. Indeed there is much I would report. Mighty fighters cannot but expect
competition from those below. MURRY take warning! You have more than a few enemies
in LAPUR.
Vendettas. Bloodied blades and broken spears. Indeed the city has seen more
than its fair share of red in recent times. I must report the passing of WALKS
SOFTLY, veteran of many duels. 14-32-0 final record His was not illustrious--but
death plays no favorites. Dark alleys may hide both secrets and assassins. In the
arena there is only the brightness of steel. Keep vigil always!
A thought before I go. Each warrior practices one style, but must not the wise
manager learn the secrets of them all? Ahh, but I can hear the spires of a far off
city calling to me. I must away! Till we meet again, remember: a turtle walks
slow, hides head in a shell, and harms no one; a lion runs to slay its prey.--

P.S. Go away, you loathsome cat.
A Strike Breaker? That's all they could find to fight me on my last, positively THE
last, appearance on the sands of this arena? Cheese. I'm insulted. -- Stonetooth
Penniless Lord -- Ah, but you see, I walk softly and carry a writ of, um, whatever it
is where I claim all your furniture in partial repayment of your debts, which debts
are many and large. -- Walks Softly
P.S. It's a dirty job, but somebody's got to do it.
Annie -- Finally! It wouldn't seem normal if we didn't fight at least one Croc. Not
that you're presenting much of a challenge at the moment, but you probably just need
seasoning. Hmm, sage and onion? We'll have to try it.... -- Snowshoe
Ed. -- Yes, probably. That Chardinee Society is nefarious beyond belief, and they
have spies and agents everywhere! -- Quick Stinger
I suspected as much. I shall have to check under the bed to make sure none of
the dust bunnies are in the pay of the Chardinees. -- Ed.
Graham -- Okay, I WILL let you at him, probably next time. -- the Scribe

The Olympics have arrived!
The Mordanti Olympics, having been gone for six years, have returned to the Mordanti
Alliance, sponsored by Amicitia Primoris. Teams have competed against each other for
recognition and notoriety four times in the past. It is far past time for the fifth
Mordanti Olympics to be held. The Mordanti Olympics shall be held in the Mordant
arena (DM-1) from May 1st (T544) through Oct 30 (T557). There will be a
'registration period' lasting until T543, where teams will be allowed to register by
activating in Mordant and declaring their participation in the personals. Rules will
be posted in the Mordant arena (DM-1) newsletter no later than T543, but shall be
available online before then. An announcement will be made as to where they will be
posted. Prizes will be awarded to the winners.
