They rode hard.
The light-haired human-- Bindi stopped her thoughts there. These were people,
allies, not prey. They had names. She owed them that recognition. The light-haired
human's name was Rughal. The not-Adantri was Ashon Chang. The orc was Vurand. Even
in thought, she must remember to name them. Allies, not prey, just as Tyrai was.
Rughal, then, had gotten them out of their nests before the first light. It had
been a very cold night. Very cold. She and Agro had been barely moving then, and
only because their allies had produced pits lined with warm stones for them to sleep
in. That's what allies did: they helped. The two crocs had been given warm food,
cooked fish. She'd never understood why people who were not crocs insisted on
cooking their food, but the warmth was good this morning. And tea. She hadn't
understood that, either. Water stained and flavored with leaves. But it was warm
inside her. It was good. She would remember.
By the time there was light in the sky, they were in the saddle and moving
westward again. For a long time they stayed in the narrow valley that went on from
the lake. It was shady and cool, and she didn't like it, but she understood the
reasons. The valley hid them from their enemies just as it hid them from the sun.
She still didn't like it, but this was a hunt, in which the crocs were both hunter
and prey, and during a hunt, one endured discomfort in order to succeed. Discomfort
was the price of success, which had to be paid, because nothing worth having came
free.
But she had never imagined that the price of saving her people would include
riding a horse all day in the shadows and nearly falling off from the numbness.
Crocs weren't designed for this riding business. There must be some other way they
could do it in the future, if they won through to the point of having a future.
Wagons? Or...what did they call those war wagon things? Chariots? Yes, maybe
chariots. Of course, it would be hard to get a chariot down a valley like this, no
level ground to speak of, big rocks, back and forth across the river, but there were,
must be routes that a chariot could travel, if it had a reason to do so. Here she
paused, struck by the realization that the swampy land favored by crocs was not
suitable for anything with wheels.
Well... boats? But crocs never used boats. They swam. They would never see
any need for boats. Or for chariots. Maybe there wasn't any need for the things
themselves. But if it would make their neighboring races seem the crocs as
intelligent and worthy of being treated as people instead of vermin, it might be
worth developing such vehicles. They had to do SOMETHING to change the way the other
races perceived them. She would talk to these people about it, these...comrades.
Her mount came to a stop. She looked ahead along the line to where the light-
haired-- To where Rughal led them.
He had stopped, too. The walls of the valley that rose to shade them framed the
human in the lead. Framed a window onto light and air. She had a mental image of
standing at a window looking out...and down. Well, it could just mean the valley
getting suddenly wider and angling more steeply down. Of course. It had to mean
that. Because she did not want to even think about it meaning...a cliff or any other
kind of sudden drop. Humans might scramble around on cliffs, they were monkeys at
heart, but crocs didn't do that.
Minutes passed while the humans peered, dismounted and climbed around on the
sides of the valley, and peered some more. Finally they remounted and waved the rest
of the party forward, waiting until everyone was assembled at the lip of...a steep
slope downward.
Bindi looked down. A dry and stony slope, another plain or plateau, level but
narrow. And beyond that lower ground, not much detail visible from here, but it was
a patchwork of green and blue, entirely unlike anything near at hand. Ashon Chang
passed her the distance-glass. It always felt awkward in her hands, and it didn't
bring out any detail to speak of in the landscape so far away.
Still just green and blue, but there was something in the texture of the view
that said "swamp." She passed the glass to Agro.
He looked and grinned, teeth shining in the sunlight. "It looks good."

DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
You're not ready to hold the title, Molly. You need more seasoning.
Quick Stinger
P.S. Lemon pepper, I think. Onions. Maybe garlic.
SPY REPORT
You elder fighters surely remember me. The younger ones may call me Olaf
Modeen. I return to LAPUR once again! What's with YEAR OF THE CAT? He actually
beat DARK GLORY's NASHVILLE, and walked away with 17 more points from the fight.
Laughs were big at ARENA FELINES while they watched YEAR OF THE CAT clobber
NASHVILLE. It lost 14 points and got bruised from objects thrown from the stands. I
can barely restrain my enthusiam for CROC FILES' outstanding member, Duelmaster ACCO.
I suppose you want to hear some rumors and dirty gossip about your fellow fighters?
Tough!
No matter the time or place, men will always duel.
Warriors of LAPUR unite. You have only your games to lose! Is it my
imagination, or are fighters getting younger every day? To die so young, so
gloriously!
Well, I'm pretty much through. You guys need to get back practicing. Are you
as tired of reading this as I am of writing it? Actually, I guess I'm writing it
before you read it. Oh, well. Remember--a good fighter needs both good skills and
good luck. Until next time,-- Olaf Modeen

Walks Softly -- Nope. Not softly enough. I'd ask you to try again, but it'd be hard

Cardow Hunters -- Thanks for the quick feed.... --Acco
Acco -- Oh, FINE, that is JUST what I needed, for some damned LIZARD to come along
and BITE MY HEAD OFF. Heck. -- Ghost of Walks Softly, not walking at all now, but
very quiet
P.S. Uncle Wolf says that I was "mediocre" and "no great loss," but that isn't how
*I* look at it.
Mighty Mouser -- Er...could I have my foot back now? Thank you. -- Snowshoe

P.S. Send a cat under the bed. Cats can handle them.
*whew* Thanks for the warning! I shall send in the cat and be prepared to do
some serious brushing afterwards. -- Ed.

A few notes about e-mailed personals:
You may submit personal ads, columns, spotlights, etc. electronically, either via e-
mail to ads at reality dot com (which doesn't need any more spam, thank you) or on
the web at http://www.reality.com/duel2/modules.php?name=Ads. When you submit
something, you should get back a receipt from HAL at RSI. If you do NOT get a
receipt, your ads may have gone astray (not all e-mail makes it to its destination
any more than all snail mail does). If you DO get a receipt, it should, in the body
of the message, tell you what arena your stuff was filed in. Check your receipt to
make sure your submission made it to the intended destination. Also check to see
that everything you sent made it to the same place. Sometimes HAL, who is rather
simple-minded in some ways, will send half your stuff to another arena if the name
or number of that arena shows up at the beginning of a line. So if the word Ti
appears at the beginning of a line halfway through your ads, all the ads after that
may end up in Ti, which is closed and doesn't need ads. As a side note, sometimes
things move slowly, so don't wait until the last minute to send your ads and all.
If they get held up along the way, they may not show up until next turn. Happy
writing! -- Ed.
28 March 2006
We of the Desolate Empire Alliance want to welcome two managers to our fold. Kon of
the Empire Rising, and Osiris! May they be blessed with the blood of their enemies,
and give no quarter in War! -- Dark Knights of the Desolate Empire
