The descent from the narrow, cold valley to the narrow, dry plain was something
Bindi hoped she would not remember. In her mind it was a jumble of sliding horses,
sliding people, sliding rocks. Falling, and catching herself on a boulder with a
bruising thump. Stones that turned under her feet, throwing her balance off and
threatening a broken ankle or another fall. Dryness that burned the juice out of her
before the sun had time to warm her flesh.
The humans helped when they could, but it was hard for her to admit that,
because they didn't seem to be helping MUCH. But when she paused long enough to
catch her breath, she could see that they were having difficulty here, too.
Different problems, maybe, but serious ones just the same. And when they stopped
half way down on a little ledge to rest, and the orc-- when Vurand brought her wet
cloths to wipe herself down, she was...what was the word humans used? She was
touched, that was it. He poured half his canteen onto the cloths. This was a good
thing that the Crocs had to learn from the humans: that comrades helped each other.
She and Agro, and others who had been, still were gladiators in Lapur, were beginning
to learn that about their own kind, but in her hazy recollections of Before there was
no sense of comradeship. Or at least not much.
The rest was short. She was sorry for that, because she hurt all over from
this...she didn't know what to call it. A descent, technically, but that was too
mild a word. And she'd been hurting already from riding that horse. She looked
along the ledge as she got her feet under her and saw that the horses were still with
them, and looking no better than she felt. There was a perverse kind of pleasure in
that. At least she and Agro weren't the only ones suffering!
Vurand passed her his canteen. "Drink up," he advised. "I dunno if it'll help
you, but it can't hurt?"
"I don't know either." Bindi took the canteen and drank. "But it tastes so
good.... Thank you." She glanced around for Agro and saw that the light-haired--
that Rughal was sharing water with him. The two males were staring out over the
space below, sometimes using the distance-glass. Talking and gesturing. Making
plans, she hoped.

                                      SPY REPORT

Well, what are you looking at, LAPUR? Ain't you never seen Snide Clemens
before? Ah, shaddup and listen to my news. Later days, CARDOW HUNTERS, since CROC
FILES took top team from you this turn, you guys are old news. Of course, we're all
terribly impressed to see LEXINGTON win a fight and gain 20 points, terribly. Tsk,
tsk, LEXINGTON beat QUICK STINGER and QUICK STINGER lost 8 points. You're breakin'
my heart. And if variety is the spice of life, LAPUR may be getting bland, as ACCO
stays top dog in the city. I'm not in a very good mood today, but why am I telling
you this? You want to know what's new, don't you, LAPUR?
My mother always told me, 'If you don't have anything nice to say, start
talking.' I loved that woman. LAPUR, I am losing what little hope I had in you.
CROC FILES the most avoided team? What insult will suffice, I cannot say. And who
led the way in this mass act of cowardice? Let's see, well, whatcha know? It was
PHILANTHROPISTS. Ha ha ha ha! Ooh, I'm frightfully impressed, QUICK STINGER was
this turn's most challenged warrior. Watch that ego swell, sports fans. I suspect
either a 21 will or a 21 ego on this one, but YEAR OF THE CAT has challenged up by 30
in an attempt against MOLLY. And sure, YEAR OF THE CAT lost alright, but gained 2
recognition for his pains. And pains they may indeed be!
Some people like volunteer work in the hospitals. I volunteer for LAPUR's
morgue. More variety. Honor is like a chainmail shirt, it only shines through use.
Certain nameless cowards will doubtless rebuke me on this one.
I was about to buy a new quill pen the other day, but some fighter took it for
an epee. Forgive me for writing with a dagger. Phlllt! Just had to do that before
I leave the fine city of LAPUR. I feel much better now. Paste this one in your
scrapbooks, you'll need the kindling come this winter-- Snide Clemens

Acco -- Oh, good. I really didn't want to have to do a column. -- Quick Stinger
P.S. But if you have any urge to eat an insurance agent, I can give you the name and
address of one who won't be missed.

Murry -- Well, I'm surprised. I expected more of you in a fight. -- Ladybug
P.S. Not that I mind!

I really wonder about the Ambitious Guard sometimes. Could it be insanity? --
Snowshoe

Big Bad Cat -- It would be bad enough if you really WERE a cat instead of a golem. --
Cezzaro

Amie -- Do not, even for an instant, think of me as 'dinner'. -- Fast Pig

Acco -- Ah, but I can now walk VERY softly. -- Ghost of Walks Softly

Lady Protector Molly -- If a Croc can also be a lady? There seems to be some
ambiguity. Anyway, congratulations, stuff like that. Have fun on the Isle. --
Chetam, odd-job man for Lapur arena
P.S. Avoid adventures. Dangerous things, adventures.

A few notes about e-mailed personals:

You may submit personal ads, columns, spotlights, etc. electronically, either via e-
mail to ads at reality dot com (which doesn't need any more spam, thank you) or on
the web at http://www.reality.com/duel2/modules.php?name=Ads. When you submit
something, you should get back a receipt from HAL at RSI. If you do NOT get a
receipt, your ads may have gone astray (not all e-mail makes it to its destination
any more than all snail mail does). If you DO get a receipt, it should, in the body
of the message, tell you what arena your stuff was filed in. Check your receipt to
make sure your submission made it to the intended destination. Also check to see
that everything you sent made it to the same place. Sometimes HAL, who is rather
simple-minded in some ways, will send half your stuff to another arena if the name
or number of that arena shows up at the beginning of a line. So if the word Ti
appears at the beginning of a line halfway through your ads, all the ads after that
may end up in Ti, which is closed and doesn't need ads. As a side note, sometimes
things move slowly, so don't wait until the last minute to send your ads and all.
If they get held up along the way, they may not show up until next turn. Happy
writing! -- Ed.

To all those lookin' for some easy pickins: I, Elfwine, manager of The Shallowship,
the most feared team in all of Jhelum, invite all who seek wide open spaces for pubs
and other such establishments of limited debauchery, to visit this deserted city and
help me clear up some of the dust. I'm just about ready to have my guys face off
against each other to get some new action. Guess I'd better join a tournament or
something...hmmmm, there's a thought.
