Past midnight. Happy hour almost over, and closing time is coming soon. In one shadowy corner admits the faint flicker of a dimly light candle. Two individuals share a brief discussion over a tankard. Their presence brings whispers and brief glimpse of curiosity from the other patrons. One of them is known as the manager of Will Duel 4 Mead, Sporkis, the other a mystery. The two quietly continue to talk to another while trying to warn away any would be listeners. Sporkis: "Are you sure about this?" The man turns his gaze towards his companion in displeasure. ????: "Hmph." Sporkis: "I mean this is a dangerous business. In a blink of an eye it could be all over." The man cringes, his eyes narrow in discontent. ????: "One would take note not to make mocking remarks. If one valued one's life." Sporkis motions an apology with a brief wave of his hand. Sporkis: "Okay, okay. Whatever, it's your life on the line. I still don't see why you want to do this so badly though." ????: "It's a matter of honor." Sporkis: "Yeah I know Fluffy was your brother and all, but still he was kind of...how do I put this politely?" The man raises his hand to halt Sporkis's response. ????: "No need. We all know what a disappointment he was. He was always the so called black sheep of the family. Despite our many efforts he never lived up to a warrior's legacy." Sporkis shakes his head in agreement. Sporkis: "True enough. He could runs circles around even the best expert swordsman with his skill. Which is why I signed him. I thought he would be Duelmaster in no time. He just never had the willpower to commit I guess. Too busy stealing women's undergarments and other atrocities. And don't even get me started on him and that donkey." ????: "Yes...a foul little wretch he became despite everything. I would have ended his miserable existence myself in due time. Still one's honor demands that retribution be dealt." Sporkis: "And that's why you want to enter the sands, I take it?" ????: "To begin with. I will send those who drove my imbecile brother down his path to end of existence to join the ranks beside him. While I could cut them down on the streets like the dogs they are...there is some elegance in the added disgrace to send pleading them in the same forum as they did him." The man smiles sadistically at thought of his own proposal. Sporkis: "Cruel, and inhuman. I kind of like it." ????: "Yes, I figured you would. One by one the lives of those responsible will be surrendered. First those who humiliated him on the sand. Then those that fueled his wretched addictions. Even that simple minded beast that delivered the final blow will one day fall at my feet" Sporkis: "Everyone eh. Including the one that sent him to his death?" ????: "No, not at all my friend. You saw the potential in him, what he could have been. If anything you should have my thanks. Not only did you try to make something of his existence, you also pardon myself from soiling my hands of ending that existence. No, no fault do I find with you my friend. Though some of those underlings of yours, his so called comrades. Might have to be dealt a fair hand." Sporkis: "Well I might be able to arrange a few things on my end for that. Some aren't living up to their potential." The two both silently chuckle at the thought. Sporkis: "If I may take a step back. You mentioned those who would come first. Five of them in all I believe. While I hate to be the bearer of bad news a couple of them, I'm afraid are no longer in reach. Two already shuffled off this mortal coil." ????: "Yes, by the hands of others. While that is regrettable, there is nothing to be done about it. They chose to escape the coming by ending their own existence so be it." Sporkis: "So that leaves three then?" ????: "Two actually. I already dispatched the most recent in a timely fashion. It was a laughable attempt as it struggled in vain." Sporkis: "Ahh, so that was the "warm up" you were referring to I take it." ????: "Indeed." Sporkis: "If I may ask, after this whole avenging thing is over and done what then?" ????: "Continue of course. While the personal aspect of the deed is done, the bloodshed shall not. I will show these fools that call themselves warriors. The ignorant masses that cheer them on. The so called superiors that sit upon their thrones govern all that they see believing that it is in their control. I will show everyone.. What true power is. What true horror really looks like. For when they stand in my presence and look and the black void in my eyes. They will crumble in fear and despair. For they will know. That the end is near and Atima is his name." Sporkis: "Heh.... So be it." The two faintly smile at one another then shake hands as the candle gently fades out to darkness. * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * "To be honest, I really don't give a damn!!!!!" screamed Goldie Showers even though she was looking at the floor. "Warriors die all the time, so what if that makes two by my hand!!!" Trying to hold his patience in check, Roadkill took a very deep breath.... "Goldie you have to understand, you just can't kill a gladiator without remorse when you have no personal vendetta against him or his team. This is simply not the Street Walker way of carrying out business." "Screw your so called 'Street Walker" ways and screw you too!!!!! I have my pride and my values and I WILL NOT COMPROMISE MY POSITION ON THE MATTER," screamed Goldie Showers, refusing to raise her head and look Roadkill in the eye. "You actually have the nerve to raise you voice to me you, incompetent little wench?" he replied with such a level tone that Goldie actually shivered. "Listen to me, I hold your contract and I can terminate it and you at any time.... So before I send your pathetic little ass to the Dark Arena, I'll let you try to convince me this one last time why I should even consider keeping you around." Suddenly Miss Conduct rushes though the door hold a crate in her hands.... "Boss, how did you do it????? This is the finest brandy in all of Alastari and you manage to get two cases within just a day???" "SILENCE.... Stand there, shut up...and wait until I finish this conversation!!!! Mumble one word and you won't have to worry about a second career outside the arena!!!!" seeing Miss Conduct frozen in her tracks, Roadkill turned his attention back to Goldie. "Boss, I'm sorry about my outburst, honest I really am...but my grandfather fought in this arena, my father fought in this arena, my brother died in this arena...." as emotion finally struck her, Goldie Showers raised her head and looked Roadkill straight in the eye. "The commission has taken my name...they have taken my family's name of "Showers", they look at three generations of gladiators and turned their back on them. You can terminate my contract, send me to the dark arena, or send me packing...at this point I really don't care. Until the commission restores my family name I will try to kill every warrior I face, and I won't back down," the more she spoke the more she grew confidence, even though tears welled in her eyes and started to flow down her cheeks, "this is my course of action...I'm not asking for your protection, or your training...all I'm asking is the chance to make the commission to stand up and recognize my family name...that's all I ask." "You realize that you have already made enemies with your last kill...very skilled enemies I might add...." smiled Roadkill as he casually flipped a dagger. "I do. And I'm willing to accept the consequences of my actions." Roadkill smiled (a smile that sent most dogs scurrying and started babies crying), "I knew your father and your brother and neither of them had the potential to have a chance of joining this stable, and both did try, but I see something in you that MAY pay dividends. So this is the deal.... I will give you all the training you need, in fact I will provide you will such intense training you will hate me. But that is what you will need to succeed, as for protection...you're on your own. I don't agree with what you're doing but I respect your feelings on this matter. Just remember one thing, while I grant you access to this request.... IF YOU EVER, EVER WALK IN THIS OFFICE AND SHOW DISRESPECT I WILL PERSONALLY MAKE YOU WISH I SENT YOU TO THE DARK ARENA.... UNDERSTOOD.... IS THAT UNDERSTOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" "Y-y-y-e-ss boss...and thank you" As Goldie Showers walked out of his office, Roadkill went over some paperwork, and with a sigh, "You still here Miss Conduct???" "You told me to stop and shut up, so I did," sweated Miss Conduct realizing that the crate she was holding getting more and more heavy. "You're not actually going to let her go through with this are you?" "Of course, she has passion and a desire to succeed, I saw it the first time I met her, and if she dies...well she dies. But now on to more important matters...I want you to deliver a bottle of that brandy to every manager in the arena, and make sure they know I offer it out of respect from one manager to another." "What about Black Samurai???" "Who?" "Black Samurai." "WHO????" "You know the guys always dressed in black!" "NO...I mean all the managers that actually matter.... By the way, send two bottles to the manager of Will Duel 4 Mead, what's his name again???" "Sporkis, I believe." "Yeah, send two bottles to him if he promise to put a leash on Retard and never lets him within 300 yards of the House of Pleasure." "You mean Rewrite." "Who???" "Never mind." + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ When Darkness Falls ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ + Redfox, a Cardow Hunter who had graduated from Dullens, frowned at his manager. "Uncle Wolf, are you SURE this is a good idea?" The old shaman didn't look up from the pattern he was sketching in the snow. "I know it is a bad idea," he said. "Just not as bad as the alternatives." He looked up, his eyes colder than the night sky above them. "Not as bad as doing nothing." He raised the dagger he was using to draw with and pointed at a spot in the pattern. "Stand there," he said, "and don't move, don't talk." Redfox stayed where he was. "What happens when you...make this thing work?" The gladiator knew himself for a simple hunter and warrior; he had no pretensions to shamanic skills. He didn't want any such skills. He didn't want anything to do with situations that required such skills. The shaman sighed. "This is...a doorway of sorts." Redfox tensed. "To the Spirit Land?" He had been there, or somewhere connected with there, before. It had not been a pleasant experience. "No. The Spirit Land is closed to all but the dead at this time. This is...a way around it. A detour, you might say." "To where?" The old shaman shook his head. After a moment, he said, "I don't think I could explain it in a way that would be meaningful to you. Just call it...somewhere else." When Redfox opened his mouth to ask another question, Wolf held up his hand. "No, 'Fox. You're a good man when it comes time to act. That will be your job. I'm sending you to somebody who needs a man of action, and will give you instructions when the time comes. Now, take your position and let's get this done." "But--" "Your main character flaw," Uncle Wolf observed, "is a tendency to ask too many questions. You need to fight that, 'Fox." "If you can't tell me where I'm going, can you at least tell me who I'm supposed to help?" Redfox asked, exasperated. The old shaman grinned, looking suddenly very like his namesake animal. "I'm sending you to Raigavor the Unholy," he said. DUELMASTER'S COLUMN Notes from the arena champ. What!? My second duelmastership!? Some people never even get a chance to be here, and I get it twice and didn't really deserve it either time. Both victories have come at the expense of better fighters who have beaten me in the recent past. Well, all I can hope for is to grad from here with a winning record...again, something I never thought I would do, nor deserve. On to my challengers: Connie -- We have fought each other four times; could this be the tie breaking round? Orathai -- I know nothing about you whatsoever. Nice record though. I could only hope that my experience would win out for me. The Clear -- I have never fought you, but I do know your style...again, same as last time, I give myself a 50/50 chance. Good luck to all. Hopefully, I am gone real soon. I know Storm Front would love to grad his first basher. Down Pour SPY REPORT Good day, in LAPUR a quiet thief gets rich, but a quiet spymaster gets poor. So bring me ale and harken to my tidbits of news. It seems the training can make the difference, as STREET WALKERS is pushed out of top team by GODS OF WAR, who came from 0th with a 0-0-0 this turn. Now keep the taverns open late tonight, for there are sorrows to drown for ARMY OF DARKNESS, whose 3-2-0 this turn dropped them by 5 into 9th. WILL DUEL 4 MEAD stable has parlayed this turn's 3-2-0 into a 3 space move up the rankings. This brings them up to 8th place. Good work, guys! And let's see, YOUR MAMA fought SIRIONDIL and gained 27 points and contributed to STREET WALKERS' 3-2-1. SNOWSHOE has lost to GALLIENUS, falling 16 points, while helping make CARDOW HUNTERS a 1-3-0 turn. The attempts to dethrone the Duelmaster have failed, and DOWN POUR remains LAPUR's top warrior for another turn. By the way, was that our Duelmaster that I saw last night, cramped under the table at The Warty Toad? He who challenges well, fights well. He who avoids without cause, shall lose for good reasons. My mama told me that one. VENUSIANS has cause to stand tall, as they were LAPUR's most avoided team. A smart manager knows this is a team to beat. And avoiding VENUSIANS more than any other team we find BLACK SAMURAI. LAPUR, are we going to accept, or respect this sort of thing? Well, sports fans, take notice that BELEG from MID EARTH was LAPUR's most challenged warrior this turn. In a brave attempt, ROSEMARY from ARMY OF DARKNESS challenged up 19 points to fight BELEG from the MID EARTH stable. ROSEMARY perhaps got hers just desserts, seeing as she was defeated by BELEG and ended up with 35 recognition points. A coward dies a thousand deaths, a brave man only once. Wise men know this to be true. Hearty mugs of ale were raised in LAPUR today as SIRIONDIL was bid farewell to a 7-2-0 warrior, with YOUR MAMA of STREET WALKERS standing silent and pensive. Whatever bright future TARONDAR may have had, it's all history now. The manager of MID EARTH has lost a promising 3-1-0 warrior. The Warty Toad declares a free round for JUNIBAN and all of BLACK SAMURAI, for having revenged ARMY OF DARKNESS' HUNGER PANG for killing one of their comrades. Congratulations go out to CARDOW HUNTERS, with CEZZARO revenging a bloodfeud against GOLDIE of STREET WALKERS. Kudos go out to PETUNIA this turn, for revenging ESCAPADE's bloodfeud against WILL DUEL 4 MEAD's warrior ATIMA. Well done. A brave warrior does not carry a red shield, he has nothing to cover or hide when the fight is over. Consider well. Thought for the day, a new sword shines bright, but the notched sword sings the sweetest. Well, I'm burning daylight here in LAPUR and I've a long road ahead of me. Happy Trails. What does it all mean? -- Aludra Tomo-Chan -- It is a good thing you ran out of energy when you did, one more hit and I believe I would have been a goner. -- Ankaa Miss Conduct II -- So your elbow is your Achilles heel, I'll have to pass that on to the rest of the stable. -- Carina Rosemary -- Wow, that was action packed! Sorry about the infirmary thing, hope they treated you well. -- Mensa Wirlwind -- I have not won a match since I was banned from the taverns by Venus. After losing to you I am beginning to think drinking helps me fight better. -- Solar Flare Solar Flare -- Think that is your problem do ya, well let's put it to the test. All taverns are now open to you. Show me something. -- Venus Goldie -- Nasty little thing, aren't you? Remind me NOT to invite you to join me for a private dinner, or any other private activity. -- Ghost of Red Tiger P.S. Besides, I've got a rotten headache. For some reason. Rewrite -- While I might, indeed, duel for mead, if there wasn't anything better going, I would NEVER rewrite for mead! Because in the first place, nothing looks worth a rewrite when you go back to it (whether this is or is not true is irrelevant in this connection) and second, because mead is HECK on your syntax. -- Cezzaro P.S. I don't really like mead, anyway. Down Pour -- Oh, THANK you! I really didn't want to hold the title again. It's heavy and makes my wrists ache, and there isn't anywhere to set it down for a rest. -- Ladybug Gallienus -- Ah, but for this brief (I hope) season, I have the advantage. And I'm keeping it, too! There's got to be SOMETHING good here. -- Snowshoe Jon -- Seriously? Huh. That is one I wouldn't have guessed. -- Red Lily Rosemary -- NO ONE should be held accountable for their kids. I shudder at the very thought! -- Cezzaro, shuddering Spartacus -- What? Which column? When? -- Ladybug the confused Gallienus -- That's why I ended the fight in minute three. -- Showshoe Ladybug -- ....and I said, "Let it rain," and it DID. -- Down Pour P.S. Actually, I wish I could take credit for that win, but that was not even a challenge from me. I did not think I could beat you. -- DP Solar Flare -- I hate flukes. -- Whirlwind Dangerous Criminal -- I can not believe I have NEVER beat you! -- Zero Sirondil -- One must try. -- Sticket Tessa -- Nice Decise! Good luck in your promising future. -- Tye Cicero -- Careful.... I have noticed your guildmates who have spoken out of turn have had a run in with the monsters of the night. -- Tye Foon Mama -- I am too cute to kill? I really would just like to be put out of my misery.... I mean, did you see my fight with the Criminal? -- Zero Scion -- Oh, not only have I noticed, but Storm Front has too. I am actually disappointed; I was looking forward to a little intra-guild challenge of seeing who graded with the best record. -- Tye Solar Flare -- I will just let that fact that you lost to Whirlwind be my payment for that whole Machagai debacle. -- Down Pour Eldacar -- I'm sure I got lucky...you should just do what DC does. -- Zero 24 January 2007 The Council of Lords would like to propose a rule change in ADM and Primus. We propose that Lord Protectors ranked "Grand Champions" and below (ADM) and "The Tower Guard" and below (Primus) be allowed to fight in the Dark Arena. This would not impact the top rankings or title match. Any managers who never got his fill or shot at fighting Gateway monsters would have it as an option. We believe it might spark some interest in the ADM/Primus realm for some managers. If interested, speak up in the newsletters or on forums under the "rules changes" thread and let RSI know. This could even be something to try for 12 months and then be re-evaluated. What say you, managers of Ghea? -- The Icelord sends.... 29 January 2007 HDFA Mission Statement "Show me the money!" This is the battle cry of a newly formed collection of like-minded individuals: The High Dolla' Free Agent$. We are not a tough guy alliance: No...we offer no battle without reward. We search for victory and the prizes and accolades that follow. We are motivated by winning and will freely use whatever means necessary to obtain our currency. No stuffy rules, no mandates, no constitutions, no leaders, only a few objectives: 1) Win as often as possible 2) Celebrate freely and revel in your victories; the more meaningless the victory the more we celebrate. Highsiding and chest thumping are encouraged. Ostentatious endzone celebrations with prop usage are encouraged, regardless of fines, penalties, suspensions or arrest by local authorities. It is important to let your opponent know how great you are; more importantly, you must let your own alliance mates know how great you are. This is a 1-up alliance, let the performance of your fellow Free Agent$ motivate you. If a Free Agent wins a TV, win 2; if a Free agent wins a contest, win a more prestigious one.
