Assorted horses and carts plodded into the courtyard casting the short shadows of the deep night. Tired forms slung legs down from their saddles. Other shadows shakily descended from the creaking carts. Standing wherever their descent s had left them, the darkened group twisted and turned as arms were raised and bodies were stretched. The last horse to enter the courtyard stopped by the gateway. The rider turned the horse half toward the crested metal gate peering into the night. The moonlight sparkled on the surface of the eyes searching the alley ways and streets within sight. After a short eternity, the horse responded to the tugged reins and stepped into the gathering area. Bringing her right leg over the rear of the saddle, Rosemary bent her left leg and dropped onto the ground. Undoing the dust-stained blue cloth which covered her mouth, she luxuriated in a brief stretch. Her eyes scanned those around her, subconsciously counting each shadow and reaching the magic number fifteen which meant everyone had returned safely. Letting out a breath, she leaned down and started pulling the girth strap loose on Nevo, her prized stallion. Grabbing the reins, she pulled gently to get him moving toward the stables. "Let's get the horses taken care of. Jason & Paul disarm the traps and check the wards. Siren, with me. Hunger Pang, Kitchen Patrol. The rest of you get your areas straightened out. We have a long week ahead of us. And the boss was quite conclusive that he did not want us to miss any more time from the arena than was absolutely necessary." The commands echoed through the group as she pushed open the door to the stable. A flash of light from the stable, blinded Rosemary. She backed away reflexively, tripping over Nevo's hoof and falling to the ground. Pandemonium descended on the courtyard as more shadows joined party who was already there. Swords slid out of scabbards with the soft hiss of metal against leather. Five members of the party, including Rosemary, lay sprawled in different states of confusion as the first sounds of metal on metal reverberated in the courtyard. A hand closed on Rosemary's collar as lights danced in front of her eyes. She felt the coarse stone sliding beneath the fabric which covered her bottom. The scraping combined with the compression of fabric around her throat as her form was dragged across the yard. Her captor hesitated occasionally and the sounds of weapons clashing nearby pounded into her ears. The hand let go once, and she attempted to rise to her feet. Her legs responded, but her head could not seem to find a balanced way to move up. Halfway up, her feet slid out from under her and she landed unceremoniously on her rear-end again. And then the hand was back. Helplessly, she brought her hands up over her head and listened to the snippets of orders and incessant clash of metal meeting metal. Jason was nearby, she heard him several times. Siren made a lewd comment which indicated that someone had managed to tear open her blouse. Rosemary cheered as the distinct sound of a blade entering the throat and slicing outward indicated that the distraction of Siren's womanhood had cost the attacker his life. Then the thought struck Rosemary that she had no way of knowing if it had been Siren's blade and tears formed in her eyes. The hand no longer pulled her, having pulled away just before what sounded like a particularly ferocious exchange of attacks and parries. The hand returned shortly afterward and did touch her hair or shoulder from time to time afterwards. Yellow, white, black, and blue splashes of color swirled before Rosemary's eyes, regardless of whether they were open or not. She soon found that she was dependant on the touch of that hand for reassurance. That touch and the occasional sounds of her companions were her only link to the battle that could indicate whether they were winning or losing. As she sat there, pulling her knees to her chest protectively, she contemplated what she would do next. In this process, her mind deciphered the fact that she had no idea whether the hand belonged to a friend or a foe. For all she knew, she was already a prisoner. "TAR VO NUE!!" The shout came from every direction at once. Weapons stopped clashing around her. The sounds of leather soles and bare feet slapping against the stones heralded the retreat of a portion of those in the courtyard. No sounds of pursuit from within the courtyard and the knowledge that the hand was not pulling her reassured her. "Rose?! Rose? Are you okay?" Two sets of hands grabbed her shoulders, pulling her to her feet. She wanted to respond, but tears of relief drowned out her words. The sound of Paul's voice sounded more wondrous than anything she had ever heard. She flung her arms around someone's neck and bawled. The frustration of failing to find a way to bring home the man she loved finding an outlet with her relief to escape. Around the courtyard, ten forms moved to the five still shadows. As Siren and Jason scoured the courtyard, the cries of Rosemary on Paul's shoulder reinforced the events of the night. Hunger Pang moved between the still forms with two others, helping as she could. The report would not be good though. Only one of those here would recuperate. And only the warriors had been granted the gift, so these were truly gone. DUELMASTER'S COLUMN Notes from the arena champ. Mr fellow Lapurians, What a pleasure it has been rising to the top of this arena...always a promise of never knowing who will be there to challenge at the top end. I am Storm Front's fourth graduate out of Lapur, first basher. I also have the distinction of being the second to grad with a winning record, regardless of how my last fight goes. For all of you I have beaten in my time here...thank you for the wins. For all of those that beat me...thank you for the humilation. No avoids for this last turn...no DA, good luck to all comers. Down Pour SPY REPORT You elder fighters surely remember me. The younger ones may call me Olaf Modeen. I return to LAPUR once again! Bein' on top is great while it lasts, GODS OF WAR. But how many friends do you have now? Phhbltt! Too much drinking and too little dodging gave GODS OF WAR a 2-3-1! I got a good laugh out of it! Up 'n down. Up 'n down. Rankings always change. Up 'n down. I think I'm gonna be... Well, FORCE OF NATURE's 1st moved them up to 4-1-0 place. What's with TYE FOON? He actually beat ESCAPADE's SPARKLE FARKLE, and walked away with 18 more points from the fight. Laughs were big at FORCE OF NATURE while they watched TYE FOON clobber SPARKLE FARKLE. She lost 17 points and got bruised from objects thrown from the stands. MARIUS was reminded on the sands why DOWN POUR is Duelmaster. Wouldn't it be nice to have live subjects to practice on? I hear some team is looking into the uses of convicted prisoners. No matter the time or place, men will always duel. How well I know the feeling of being in the most avoided team! Don't fall out of practive, MID EARTH! The bums at ARMY OF DARKNESS couldn't face the challenges from MID EARTH! No excuse for that! What do people see in AUREOLUS? His 10-17-0? EQUESTORS ain't talkin', but he's got 53 points. Keep challenging up 32 points, SIREN, and I won't have to write about you much longer. GALLIENUS always accepts those kind of challenges... Who knows what was running through SIREN's head, but GALLIENUS rearranged it for her. How soon will SIREN make a challenge like that again? AUREOLUS didn't quite know what to make of a challenge he received from JASON of ARMY OF DARKNESS, who is 19 points below him. JASON perhaps got his just desserts, seeing as he beat AUREOLUS and ended up with 49 recognition points. Warriors of LAPUR unite. You have only your games to lose! We all knew it had to happen sooner or later. A warrior can't stick around with a 5-5-0, and MENTU easily took care of OSTOHER V. LANCE was plum wore out after BELEG pounded 'im silly in a Bloodfeud. MEN'll have to get a little better before going after BELEG again! Let's see... Uh, looks like MEN has one week left to revenge DON's death. But MISS CONDUCT II tells me she's not losing any sleep. BUZZSAW larned his lesson (SOLAR FLARE taught it well), and we right likely won't be seein' 'im fight any VENUSIANS members with the same gusto. Is it my imagination, or are fighters getting younger every day? To die so young, so gloriously! Many other cities have retirement homes for aged warriors. Any plans here? Are you as tired of reading this as I am of writing it? Actually, I guess I'm writing it before you read it. Oh, well. Time for my medication, so I'll leave now. I am Xoan, and I have come to do battle with your warriors. Ready yourselves and know that I am here! -- mgr of The Followers of Xoan May your shield split, and your sword shatter. Carina -- Shush hon, why let these dumb brutes no our secrets :) -- Miss Conduct Red Tiger -- It wasn't personal, honest. I have no doubt that once the commission recognizes my name my past actions will cause me future grief and regret. May your ancestors welcome you, and when my time comes, I hope you can understand me better than what you've seen of my actions in this realm. -- Goldie Showers Zero -- Actualy I was hoping we could get together for a nice cup of tea. I'm just getting too old for this game, and I have a good pension plan. -- Mama Down Pour -- Congrats on your invite. -- On Behalf of Roadkill and all the Street Walkers Energizer Bunny -- Carina told you too huh??? -- Miss Conduct Siriondil -- Oops. I hope your guild can forgive me. It's just training with Goldie SHOWERS recently it became almost a reflex action. I await your bloodfued. -- Mama Ostoher -- Smack me around all you want, I don't mind. Just PLEASE teach me a parry skill next time. -- Brickhouse Red Lilly -- Damn...you are one hot chick!!! Maybe we could get together outside the arena...I promise this time I'll actually use sope next time I bathe. -- Dirty Sanchez Black Wine 'n Cry -- I could understand you being upset if that was a challenge down of 30 points...but it was a random match-up...so why are you whinning so much??? You seem to want to play this "you big bully" card, but every one in this this arena that knows my style of play, knows differently. As far as being the top ranked team a lot and having people gun for me is obvious, every team does that in every arena. If you read past comments, this is the part where you rally teams, and soon you'll start to run away. I hope you prove me wrong and show a little backbone for once (but I doubt it will happen). Or sure, you'll challenge Your Mama with your lunger even though he has over twice the FE and gloat about it. But you'll also sit out your TP when Miss Conduct is in range, and sit out your lower ranks just to avoid me. BTW, Do you really think I don't have any friends in this arena??? Not that I would ask them to help putting you in a time-out. See...I've already put more effort in this than you deserve...challenge me if you want...I could use the wins, but as for my challenges...I'd rather put those towards those who can give me a true fight. Have a Nice Day -- Roadkill Fluffy -- Pardons accepted and thanks for holding my place. You're too much. -- Ghost of Little Milly Ankaa -- A loss with benies, such a good teacher. And I did keep my style-master ranking...whadda ya mean no one else wanted it. It's an oft-honored style. -- S'tou P.S. To a fallen fellow piker -- Bwaaaaa Bwaa Bwaaaaaaaaaaaa... Khormashra -- I apparently got over my initial fight jitters, poste-haste. The beginning, is such a delicate time. Certain masterings must be mastered before mastering The Masterings. -- Sparkle Aludra -- Ah geez, that was tough. Not what I was shooting for but the opportunity presented. Living up to my handle right outta the gate. -- Buzzzzsaw Atima -- The feud had to be feuded while the occurrence was still fresh in your faculties because you must understand that was a very important fighter you killed. Ummmmm, you know, what's-her-name. -- Petunia P.S. Don't gloat, it'll come to me <grin> Roadkill -- Keep your brandy. I have no control over Rewrite's actions outside of the arena. As long as he's away from me I don't care. After all better he's your problem than mine. -- Sporkis Petunia -- Don't feel overconfident about your accomplishment. I simply grew weary of our little encounter and decided to bow out early. I have little patience on wasting my energy and skills on a inferior form of life. -- Atima Plosstumuss -- Waznts expectings thatz. Nicez effertz thoze. Howz bouts I buyz youz ones in condolcents -- Rewrite Pound Puppy -- Sorry about the whole getting carried away with bloodlust thing. I do not believe in euthanasia, no matter how merciful it would be. If we have a next time I remember to bring the rolled up scroll to bat you on the head instead ok. -- Tessa Cezzaroes -- Whaz? I cantz understands a thing youz sayings. Cantz youz speaks em poperiez? -- Rewrite Tye Foon -- Well you do have to have your wits about you on a team like mine. Otherwise bad things might happen. -- Tessa Mr. Roadsmill -- Whats do youz means threes hundreds yerds? Whats ya yerd? -- Rewrite Juniban -- Thanks for the trains. That's one way to satisfy a bloodfeud. -- Hunger Pang Black Samurai -- I stand ready for whoever may come next. -- Hunger Pang Sticket -- I hear curls are best for arm injuries. To be totally honest, I kinda felt hurt for you. -- Siren Brickhouse -- Sorry love. Did not intend to end anyone's career, just gotta do what a girl's gotta do. Ya know? -- Siren Beleg -- Well, the boss said he wanted to know what style you were. Next time I'm telling him to find out himself. -- Rosemary Mensa -- I am glad to entertain. As for the infirmary, I guess it was coming anyway. The doc told me I was due for my yearly anyway. -- Rosemary Cezzaro -- That's exactly what I have said for years!! -- Rosemary Miss Conduct II -- Well, boss got a good chuckle outta that one, since he started to write up the paperwork for me to challenge you and then decided against it. I had fun meeting you. Any chance we could talk in private? -- Energizer Bunny Bill -- Well that concludes my challenges against you for a while. Boss won't let us challenge the same person repeatedly. Personally I was impressed that you got those three parries, so we may meet again after a few more fights. -- Jason All -- Not sure why the online system hates it, but the story I have tried to send the last two turns keeps getting rejected. I'll take the story down a different path, but just thought you might want to know that I had not forgotten about everyone here. -- Master Beru Wirlwind -- You blew me away. Thanks for the learns though. -- Carina Eldacar -- Admit it, I had you worried at the end. -- Mensa S'Tou -- You can really take a hit, want to go out for some drinks later? -- Ankaa Down Pour -- I was not expecting to fight you and I did as well as I thought I would. Grats on you graduation...now get the hell out of here. -- Solar Flare Buzzsaw -- An appropriate name if ever there was one. -- Ghost of Aludra Escapade -- Curse the gods! They give me a warrior with great potential and then take her away after two fights! Well since I cannot take retribution from them, Buzzsaw will have to do. I am sending Solar Flare first; quite frankly she needs some kind of win to get her out of this slump. -- Venus Dirty Sanchez -- You dirty guy! Into the bathtub with you! -- Red Lily Gallienus -- Alas, the thaw! You're good at this. -- Snowshoe Marius -- Drat. I thought... well, never mind. (heavy sigh) Good fight for you. -- Ladybug Goldie -- Oh, hey, you're not a Croc! Sorry, I kinda thought you would be, and it made me tense. -- Cezzaro Goldie Showers -- What demands? Which? Where? -- the confused Cardow Hunters Kyoko -- (bitterly) Don't talk to me about fates! -- Ghost of Red Tiger P.S. You're welcome to all of my hide you can get, though. The gods know *I* don't need it now. Zero -- Very few people beat the Dangerous Criminal, here or in other arenas. That is one well-named standby! -- Uncle Wolf, Cardow Hunters Our congratulations to Down Pour! -- Cardow Hunters All -- For those of you who track such things...Down Pour's numbers -- Basher, 11-4- 16-15-9-12-17, very frail, great damage, AdEx in Ini, Att, and Dec. War Hammer Favorite (never used it, awlays went with QS), HI/MO, Bash Tactic (used rarely), learned Ini as fav learn. Will retire. Carina -- Keep sending your sisters...I like winning against the odds...I may grad with a winning record too if you Venusians keep fighting me. -- Whirlwind P.S. Nice learns for you though. Solar Flare -- Are you going to pay me now, or do I need to keep after you? -- Down Pour Heartwood -- Ouch. -- Tye Foon Aureolus -- Does your manager want to send you to the DA as much as mine wants to send me? -- Zero Siren -- Nice match up, nice record...you know who is on my aviod list every turn from now on... -- Sticket 29 January 2007 HDFA Mission Statement "Show me the money!"
