Winds of Change
continued...
Off in the distance the sunset made the mountains tops glow of bright red and
orange. If you didn't know any better you would swear the peaks of the Shadowspire
mountains were aglow in flames.
A man of average height and a dwarf walked along the side of the muddy path that
appeared to be a road. They both wore dark brown cloaks that covered their dark
pants and white shirts bearing an embroidered "V" on the pocket. Off in the distance
they could finally see the faint twinkle of lights.
It had been days since they had received orders, to travel to Shadowspire. Once
there, they were to find out if the rumors of a new arena opening, to be true or just
folly. An hour later they finally reached the outskirts of Shadowspire. Quietly
walking the streets the only thing that could be heard was faint music and laughing
from a nearby Inn.
"This place looks like a ghost town," grumbled the dwarf. "It must be a rumor."
"Rhuw, it is late, don't jump to conclusions," calmly replied his partner,
shaking his head. "We need to find a room."
"You're right, Gar," he answered as they headed towards the Inn they had just
passed, to try and find a room for the night. Inside the Inn, it looked as though
things were quieting down. The two headed over to see the Keep.
"Excuse me sir, do you have a room for the night?" asked Gar politely.
"Yes sir, I have one room left," answered the Keep. "You're lucky it is a
double as well."
"Excellent," smiled Gar as the Keep handed him the key to the room.
"Up the stairs and to the left, third door on the right."
Rhuw interjected, "We have heard rumors that the Gladiatorial Commission is
opening a new arena here. Is this true?"
"Oh yes, sir, that is why business is so good," grinned the Keep. "I believe it
is scheduled to open soon."
"Very good," replied Rhuw.
Early the next morning, Gar woke to his dwarven friend's loud snoring. Climbing
out of bed he walked to the window to look outside. He was somewhat surprised to see
that the "ghost town" of the night before was now bustling with activity. "Perhaps
this rumor is true," he thought to himself.
Tired of hearing the snoring coming from across the room, he reached down and
grabbed a boot and threw it at Rhuw hitting him in the chest. "Wake up! You sound
like a bear in heat."
Rhuw sat straight up still half asleep, "Yes, mum, I am up."
Hearing this caused Gar to chuckle and reply in his best motherly voice, "Hurry
up. sonny boy."
Rubbing his eyes and blinking to focus, Rhuw was now awake enough to see Gar and
grumbled back, "Damn you, it's a good thing we are friends."
"Oh, hurry up. We need to get to the commission office and verify that the
rumor is true. Then get a message sent to the boss in Lapur. After that we will
need to get everything squared away to form a new guild here," impatiently rambled
his friend.
"Okay, okay, now you really are starting to sound like my mother," smirked Rhuw
in return.
-----------------------------
Sitting at his desk in the basement office of his Lapurian guild house, The
Visionist had spent the last few days trying to find heads or tails of the disaster
that was his office. His desk was covered with huge stacks of parchments, stacked so
high they are teetering on the edge of toppling over at any minute. The air was
still stale and a bit damp, with years of dust still covering everything.
"Jeez , I swear I don't remember there being this much paperwork when I was last
here," he wondered to himself.
Suddenly the door at the top of the stairs flew open and Kalimac came thundering
down shouting, "Sir a messenger just delivered this!"
Rushing over to the desk, Kalimac stopped just in time. Reaching over the desk
handing the message to his boss, he bumped into the desk slightly. One of the stacks
shifted and leaned a little further.
Kalimac held his breath, afraid to move an inch, then relaxed and exhaled a deep
breath. "Whew, that was close." His exhale shifted the top page on one of the
stacks of papers and an avalanche slowly came to life. Like dominoes one pile after
another slowly tipped over, falling into the next. Kalimac let out an, "Ohh,
shhhhhhhhhh" before the sound of rustling paper drowned out his voice and the room
slowly filled with a cloud of flying papers and dust. The whirlwind of paper and
dust seemed to last for an eternity, but in reality it was no more than a half of a
minute.
Kalimac stood by the desk cringing in disbelief. Expecting to hear a roar from
behind the desk, but instead hearing a faint chuckle and opening his eyes. In front
of him he saw the manager surrounded in paper up to his knees and covered in dust.
The chuckle suddenly became a hearty laugh, as he watched the last floating pieces of
paper comes to rest around the room.
Kalimac couldn't help himself and began to laugh and managed to stutter out,
"I, aaa, I am so sorry, sir."
"Ohhh. It's okay," chuckled the manager as he closed his eyes and shook the
dust from his hair. "You do realize who will be cleaning this mess up now, don't
you?" he added with a grin.
"Yes, I know," solemnly nodded Kalimac before adding, "what of the message,
sir?"
"Oh yes, I forgot," he replied before leaning back in his chair and breaking the
seal on the scroll.
Sir,
The rumor is true. Your directions in this matter are being
implemented immediately. Don't worry, sir, we have everything under control.
Gar
"Is it true?" queried Kalimac wide eyed and impatient.
Stoically the manager looked up. "Please tell Dirmael I need to speak with him,
then don't you have some cleaning to do?"
Nodding he turned to deliver the message to his friend and new guild leader.
The manager called out to him as he reached the bottom of the stairs, "Get the
boys to help you clean up this mess. That way you have more time organizing all
these parchments for me while I am in Shadowspire."
Kalimac stopped in his tracks, turned back and smiled at his boss, then hurried
up the stairs to deliver the message and find the young men of the guild.

The easiest way to enter the Spirit Lands is to die.
Uncle Wolf chose not to use that method. Though he was old, very old for a
Rirorni, he had not tired of life. There were Gates that the living might use, if
they were willing to take the risk. Some, such as the one down by Rocanis, were as
nearly permanent as such things ever were. Others came and went on some schedule
known only to gods and ghosts. And some could be created out of skill and need.
The need was great, his and that of... certain others. His skill would be, he
gauged, sufficient. Barely. He grimaced. The decline of the Ghean Arcanum did not
affect the Spirit Lands directly, but there was an effect. It made the barrier
between the worlds of Spirit and Matter less easily penetrated. Novices in the dark
art of necromancy solved this problem with sacrifice, riding through the barrier on
the souls of their victims. Those a little stronger and more skilled called on the
spirits of those already dead and forced them to open a way. Each method had its
disadvantages, as did the one he chose for his own purposes: to make his own hole in
the wall between worlds and step through without the aid of any other soul, any tool
other than his own long years as a shaman.
When he left the windy night behind and stepped into the Spirit Lands, Wolf
found them the same as they always were, and different, as they always were. This
outer march was windless and still, neither hot nor cold, light nor dark. An
uninhabited twilight world that stretched beyond what human eyes could see and yet
had the taste of a small room long closed. The faintly rolling plain was clothed in
something brownish that vaguely ferny, a little grass-like, tough and tangled and
capable of tripping anyone who didn't move carefully.
Someone alive, that is; the dead had no problem with it.

SPY REPORT
If you were disturbed from your beauty rest only to have to watch a bunch of
LAPUR brutes like you, you'd be grouchy, too. Now keep the taverns open late
tonight, for there are sorrows to drown for MEN, whose 0-1-0 this turn dropped them
by 6 into 19th. Ha! VENUSIANS turned their 3-2-1 turn into a 9th place rank in the
listings this turn. Any better than this, and you get put on hit lists. Now let's
all watch EQUESTORS' heads swell from their 4-0-0 this turn. Haa ha ha ha! Big
shots, big talk, big deal. Of course, we're all terribly impressed to see JASON win
a fight and gain 47 points, terribly. Tsk, tsk, CLOUD TIGER beat TALYM and TALYM
lost 23 points. You're breakin' my heart. ALUMINUM AWL challenged LAPUR's
Duelmaster for a shot at the throne. And if variety is the spice of life, LAPUR may
be getting bland, as TYE FOON stays top dog in the city. The Burning Tree, humph!
I've tasted better ale at mortuaries. Where do they get this stuff? From LAPUR's
trash dumps?
My mother always told me, 'If you don't have anything nice to say, start
talking.' I loved that woman. BLOOD KNIGHTS, I suppose you'll be glad to know you
were this turn's most avoided team. Care to know who is the most afraid of you? And
it looks like ABYSSAL PLAINS avoided them the most this turn. What a pack of would
be losers, if you ask me. Hmph. RED LILY was challenged more times this turn than
the Duelmaster. Now was the DM insulted or feared? Heh, heh. Looks like time for
laurels or hemlock, SPARKLE FARKLE was challenged by ZERO VISABILITY, who was ranked
45 points below her. And sure, ZERO VISABILITY lost alright, but gained 5
recognition for his pains. And pains they may indeed be! I guess I can give a
little credit to DIRTY SANCHEZ of STREET WALKERS for challenging up by 23 to
MORRIGAN. DIRTY SANCHEZ won to get 102 points of recognition.
Death and Taxes. The less death I see, the more it taxes my patience. Let's
see if anyone's dead or dying. Bye bye, warrior, bye bye... SNOWSHOE, a glorious
26-21-0 fighter, has passed away. Gee, too bad CARDOW HUNTERS. You can run, JASON,
but maybe you can't hide from CARDOW HUNTERS. Killing SNOWSHOE is something the rest
of ARMY OF DARKNESS may not be able to help you with. Titanium shields and bamboo
daggers, guess what brave team is developing these kinds of weapons?
There's got to be a better place in LAPUR to get a drink than The Burning Tree!
Any suggestions? Phlllt! Just had to do that before I leave the fine city of LAPUR.
I feel much better now. I see the crowds are getting restless, I must leave now--
Snide Clemens

of it)
Starry Nite -- Close jump. I think my cushion pins usurped your authority though we
could meet again. Under different circumstances. -- Turtle
Dirty -- RRRRrrrrr.....finally. Yerrrr all right. -- Buzz
Kyoko -- D'you notice I was sporting some of the new "painted" armor that's all the
rage? Love the stripes, hate the mottling. Buzzzz-ard Breath says "throw in a
couple of reeds and I'd make a good duck-blind." No fashion sense, that boy. --
Sparkle Farkle
Aereon -- I'd say you've got your legs under you now. Good challenge but
understand...I was experimenting. -- Petunia
Mensa -- His name is Buzzzz-Saw. Remind me to introduce you to him and his bologna-
slicer some time. -- S'tou
Tye Foon -- Yer the killer tomato... I mean tornado. And the Duelmaster, ye gods,
man, yer taking "beat the champ to be the champ" to whole new levels. Where's yer
decorum? <grin> -- S'tou
Thaar -- I wasn't trying to slit your throat, honest (okay, maybe I was, but I'm just
following Roadkill's orders, it wasn't personal for me). -- Jurassic Jordan
Myraid -- That was so sweet of a big strong man like you to let little ol' me win
that one. It's nice to see a true gentleman on the sands. -- Jurassic Jordan
Ghost of Tessa -- I guess this is the part where Roadkill has to eat humble pie, to
be honest, I never would have thought you would get the jump on me either, you will
be missed. -- Dirty Sanchez
Buzzsaw -- Obviously you have improved a great deal since the last time we met. I am
surprised you put me down so quickly, and for the 2nd week in a row I have to
bathe...life's not fair. -- Dirty Sanchez
This is news?
Ty Foon -- Ouch...ouch...ouch... (did I say ouch????) The throne's all yours, I
REALLY don't want to go through that again!!! -- Brickhouse
Heartwood -- My experience gave my that one, even though you almost won always. --

Enyalius -- I thought I'd save you the effort and challenge you for once. -- Goldie
Showers
Sporkis -- How do I know what strategy Tessa used against Brickhouse....hmmm...maybe
because I gave it to you??? Dude, 1/2 arena already knows I've helped you when ask,
I'll help anyone who asks. If anyone in the arena thinks we're allies...think
again...you irritate me way too much to deal with on a full time basis. :) --
Roadkill
Death Mob -- Welcome to Lapur, I think you'll enjoy this arena. -- Roadkill and the
Street Walkers.
Oremaster and the Metal Mincers -- A BIG welcome back to you, competition just
stepped up another notch. -- Roadkill
Ty Foon -- You miserable S.O.B.!!! Why did you have to go and kill Tessa??? Now I'm
really ticked off...ticked off that you beat me to it. ;) -- Roadkill
Sparkle -- Is Uncle Barkle Farkle related to Tarkle Farkle??? He not a pheasant
plucker, he's a pheasant plucker's son, and he just sits there plucking pheasants
until the pheasant pluckings done. -- Roadkill (sorry could resist)
Stormfront & Tye Foon -- Tsss. Tsss. Tsss. Well we all new it was coming sooner
or later. I just didn't think it would be in that fashion. To have one so promised
to stain the sands red with there blood at the hand of a foe. It's a tricky thing.
If it was from the heat of combat... a slip of the hand... determination for the
Fallen... even pure uninhibited bloodlust. Any of those would be acceptable
circumstances. Payment would be dealt swift, harsh, then forgotten and things would
move on as they were. That is the life of the arena. The cry of its lifeblood.
Unfortunately we saw none of those that day. What we saw was a depraved spineless
act, devoid of any sense honor, character, or grace. The lowest of the low, the scum
that scum look down upon, those who wallow in their own ignominy without a second
thought. You know there's nothing worse than a CONTRACT KILLER. Oh yes, I know I'm
afraid. You can hear it in the whispers in the training pits... in the endless
chatter amongst the spectators in the seats... in the quiet ramble among the mob in
the streets. One has to ask himself, could it be just rumors? An endless string of
gossip that travels into the infinite? In any other case it could be an valid
question...but not here I'm afraid. For I have seen the evidence at hand, talked to
witnesses to the dealings. You didn't do it for the honor. You didn't do it to
avenge a fallen comrade. You didn't even do it for the pride and glory that each
warrior brings every time they step onto those sands. You did it for the payoff.
Just because your employer couldn't get the job done himself. Tell me how much gold
is overflowing from your pockets? How many slaves were you promised for arena
fodder? Or did you just do it for praise from your benefactor's cold embrace? Wait,
don't bother it doesn't really matter. As they say what goes around comes around.
What was it last time that you insisted so much? The full and non-forgone bloodfued?
Battle after battle of magic, mayhem, and blood that they would allow. Win, lose, or
death. Ah...sounds like something to truly worthy of toasting a mug to. Don't you
think? Maybe not. You see Lapur is a hard place to keep things quiet...even in the
confines of your own thoughts. In addition to the whispers in the shadows of your
mis-dealings...there is one ever so feint line speculation. Would they? Yes, would
they? Would they actually try and take the cowards route of things? Try to weasel
Foony out of his debt of flesh owed at least...under a mock guise of atonement for
poor, poor Wendy for the entire time allowed? No I don't think so, ever so much as
you might like it to be so in the back of your minds. Even if you did it wouldn't be
a guarantee set in stone...and I don't think you would like to pay the consequences
of doing so. No, no my friends. I will tell you what your going to do. You will
both take every second, every cut, every broken limb, every contusion. You will
stand there, with a forced smile ear to ear, and when asked you will say "Thank you,
sir. May I have another?". You will pray that it ends, over and there. And if I am
feeling nice, really nice I might just let it. If you don't...well I can assure you
that pity or remorse don't run in the family my friends. Spite though, sure as hell
does. Just some food for thought. -- Sporkis
Peiton -- Nope sorry. Goo apparently got tired and took a nap. It's something I'm
having Kyoko still trying to train him not to do...that and paper training. --
Sporkis, Will Duel for Mead
Dirty Sanchez -- Let me ask you something. Were you more surprised that I beat you
to the punch last week and nearly put you down like a mangy sick cat? Or that you
never even got a chance to redeem yourself and try to do the same to me this turn? I
bet your either laughing it up or kicking your self that it wasn't you right now.
Don't worry hun, you and your handler will get another chance soon enough. I'm not
dead, I'm just taking a couple of weeks vacation. :) -- Ghost of Tessa
Athena -- Wow. One god to another. I don't know if it all the traded shots or the
hits to the head, but my adrenaline is still pumping. My condolences for Ares, I
keep forgetting this whole mortal coil thing. At least you gain a token of revenge
for your fallen. Still if you feel it isn't enough. So be it. Regardless I
wouldn't mind doing that again. -- Urd
Sparkle Farkle -- Well done. I don't like to give praise to my opponents often,
especially those who get the better of me. But I thought I had you and you turned it
around like there was no tomorrow... Well I guess there wouldn't have been if I
popped you once more, but still well done. -- Kyoko
Aalaiya -- Goo sorry...Goo give hug...Goo share candy got for win. Mmmmm...tasty. --
Goo
Hulik -- That might take a while Huliky -- Urd
Master Beru -- Thanks for the support, but as you know nothing lasts forever.
Apparently my success envokes the worse in people *cough*. As for anonymity, it's
fine and all but it's not as fun. :) -- Sporkis
Amiezies -- Iz donts doz tooz showings onz dat samez nitez. I'mz morez wans banz
thunks youz mamz. Youz stoolkingz mez orz somethinz nowz? -- Rewrite
Re'Amemait -- 31 points and a 19 fight advantage. I know I'm not that good but give
me some credit. Well, if you keep learning like that, you should be able to be very
competitive soon. -- Camulus
Jason -- You're a fast little sucker. I can't remember the last time I swung at air
that many times. -- Morrigan
Goldie -- That was just dirty what you did to me. I think I need a shower now. --
Enyalius
Urd -- Well fought. One more hit and you would have had me. -- Athena
Re'Horus -- What can I say? That was a humbling experience. -- Qetesh
Congrats Tye Foon on your Championship. And Stormfront keeps telling everyone he
doesn't have any good warriors. -- Sovereign
Welcome to Death Mob and a welcome back to Metal Mincers. I am hoping to make your
acquaintance on the sands soon. -- Sovereign and the Gods
Rosemary -- I don't see it. Rosemary is not dark, it's herbal sunlight, summer heat,
stuff like that. You're in the wrong army, girl. -- Red Lily
Hulik -- There was a Hulik on Uldune, but you aren't her. Too bad. She was fun. --
Sky Falling
Zero Visibility -- Tell me about it! Actually, don't, I know quite a bit about that
stuff myself already. Talk about zero visibility, try a whiteout. -- Snowshoe
Forte -- I don't think gladiating is it for you. Maybe you should go into the
business of selling insurance. -- Cloud Tiger
Wendy Day -- I think I've heard of you--your brother's Sonny, isn't he? -- Firefly
P.S. Oh, shoot. I didn't realize till Jorja was checking the deader list. I'm
really sorry about that. We could've been friends.

Ok, ok, you can stop not-talking about TOGS VI already, it is coming, slowly but
surely, like a giant, over-fed, greased slug sliding down a gravely driveway. We're
looking for new-comers, old-timers, in-betweeners, fence-sitters and Delarquans to
come on out and participate. Just think, you could be the next Pinky & the Brain
pairing (a la Creepster & Manager), or maybe you'll be the team that crushes all in
its path on the way TO UTTER AND COMPLETE TOGS DOMINATION!!!!!! [note: insert
sinister cackle if it helps you complete the picture]
There will be a few minor changes, so let's recap the rules from top to bottom:
1. Each TOGS team consists of two managers. After the contest starts, there will be
no switching partners whatsoever, so choose your teammate wisely. TOGS VI will last
for 13 turns, so pick a partner you can stand for 6 months or so.
2. The TOGS entry fee is 2 team setups per manager. This means 4 setups per TOGS
team. This entry fee is required before the start of the tourney with no exceptions
being made. This is to ensure that nobody gets screwed if a team or manager decides
to back out early. To pay the entry fee either:
a) send $10 cash/check/money order/ or whatever to me personally at:
Paul Jokelson
115 Moss Ave. #201
Oakland, CA 94611
b) get RSI to send me 2 team setup gift certificates. Sorry, no credit cards
and no old teams you have lying around will be accepted.
3. TOGS point system:
Fights:
10 points for winning on your up-challenge against another TOGS warrior.
7 points for winning on your even challenge of another TOGS warrior.
7 points for winning on another TOGS warriors challenge.
7 points for winning a random match-up against another TOGS warrior.
4 points for winning on your down-challenge of another TOGS warrior.
4 points for winning a random match-up against a non-TOGS warrior.
Changes this TOGS:
** 10 points for any challenge by the DM, UP OR DOWN!!
** 4 points for winning a random match-up against your TOGS partner's warrior.
To state the obvious, there are 0 points if you challenge your partner.
** 4 points for winning a bloodfeud attempt against you by a non-TOGS warrior
You will not get any points if you challenge or get challenged by a non-TOGS team
(with the exception of the above-stated rule if you get bloodfeuded), so use your
avoids wisely if you think someone is out to get you.
Spots/Ads
5 points for every spotlight written by any team member. 1 per manager per turn.
The minimum length of a spotlight to receive points is 1/2 column in the newsletter
(that's 31 lines-each line 85 characters across) and we will be completely firm on
this. In addition to the length criteria, spotlights will not be given points if
they are in any way plagiarized or if they are not Duelmasters or fantasy related.
We will be the sole judge of this. If you're unsure if we will judge something to be
Duelmasters or fantasy related, then e-mail me before you write the spotlight and
ask. We reserve the right to take points away from a spotlight after they are given
if we judge at later time that the spotlight has been plagiarized.
-5 points per manager per turn every time a manager does not at least write one
personal ad.
4. TOGS VI will start in arena 60 shortly after the Winter Face-to-Face (turn due
Feb 21, Aradi turn 436) and as mentioned before will last for 13 turns. There will
be multipliers in the later rounds, which means that all points accumulated by a team
on turns 10 and 11 will be multiplied by 1.5 and all points accumulated by each team
on turns 12 and 13 will be multiplied by 2.
5. Soultaker and Nuln will be the sole arbiters of any dispute that may arise, with
props to Sentinel for doing the score-keeping as always. Whine all you like, we will
be glad to provide comfortable chairs and the cheese of your choice.
And there be the rules. If you look closely, you'll notice there were a few minor
changes and additions made from the TOGS V rules. They are as follows:
-- The Snotman & Nuln rule: Last TOGS Snotman and Nuln randomly matched up something
like 4-5 times, so we basically decided out of pity to now give a small amount of
points (4 in this case) for winning a random against a teammate, so that you're not
completely screwed by having 2 of your 10 warriors get 0 zero points automatically.
-- Scaling Down Points for the DM: Previously a TOGS DM would get 10 points *in
addition* to whatever challenge points they got. This was to keep the DM from being
penalized for being at the top and give people something to fight for. However, it
was a bit too much of an award and we decided to scale it back and eliminate the
bonus, but give full upchallenge credit whenever the DM challenges.
-- Bloodfeuds from outside TOGS teams: This incident came up last TOGS, and it was
felt that if a person killed a non-TOGS warrior in a random, they shouldn't have to
be potentially locked into 4 turns of getting 0 points. So we've added an additional
rule which now gives 4 points if you win when bloodfeuded by a non-TOGS warrior, at
least giving you some way to get points if you're locked into a non-TOGS bloodfeud
instead of being basically removed from the contest for 4 turns.
And lastly...
-- Team Names: This was not listed in the rules, but to make things more festive, at
the suggestion of Manager we have decided to have the added dimension of team names!
Yes, no more boring rankings with Team 4 edging out Team 7. Just picture reading a
TOGS turn report now, with something along the lines of "Team Fiery Starfish
obliterated Team Superior TOGSlings," just as one example.
We hope to see you all there....
