Somewhere congruent with southern Alastari:
Uncle Wolf traveled along the edge of Night. Using the concepts "traveled,"
"along," and "edge of Night" in a loose, metaphorical sense. Perhaps even the
concept "Uncle Wolf" was loose and metaphorical here. It was the Spirit Lands, but
not a version of them familiar to the old shaman. A high, rocky ground, a crooked
ridge, perhaps. There was a sort of wind, though nothing stirred the tangled grassy
stuff on the ground. A spirit wind, he supposed. Something howled, but it wasn't
the wind. He must be getting close to the... "lodge" of the Wild Hunt, to hear the
pack. Unless they were out now. No, he was approaching the lodge. The ridge he was
following was getting steeper and narrower, the descent on either side becoming
precipitous. Colder, even if it was impossible to feel natural cold in the Spirit
Lands. He was feeling something. There was a darker shape against the dark sky
ahead. He hunched into the intangible wind and kept moving.
Not far from Lapur:
Annie huddled deeper into her hooded robe. It was the only thing that was
keeping her alive in this icy night. She was still astonished that she had even come
out here: She was a Croc, dammit, a reptile. She should be sitting near the fire in
her guildhouse.
But she had come, and now she stood in the cold wind, staring up at a scaffold
of poles and waiting. In the SNOW, which was insane. For what, she didn't know.
Something "human." There was a lot "human" that she didn't know. And if she froze
to death tonight, she never would.
*you came*
If Annie had been a mammal, the hairs would have risen on the back of her neck.
She looked around, squinting against the cold that seemed to be freezing her
eyeballs. The wind around her had dropped, though it was still driving the snow
horizontally a little more than arm's length away. But around her there was a little
bubble of still air, misty air. Almost warm, which was just wrong. How could the
air be warm, here and now?
*i am still finding out what i can do i guess warmth to keep you alive is one
thing*
"Red Lily?" Annie stared around wildly. "You're DEAD!" Gestured at the
scaffold now barely visible through the blowing snow. "Your body's up there!"
*there's more to a person tha a body don't you crocs have souls*
Goldie grunt what might pass for a laugh, but she was not amused. "I don't even
know what a soul IS, Lily."
*i believe you have one or i couldn't be talking to you now*
The Croc twitched a shoulder. "I don't know. How could I know? WHY are you
talking to me now?"
*i need your help*
"But you're DEAD."
*there are things i have to do which require a body that body is dead but yours
is not i need your help*

Near Rocanis:
Redfox led his group in a wide circle around Spirit Ridge. Uncle Wolf had told
him it would be the focus of the problems here, but he'd have known it anyway, just
from the way it made him feel whenever he got too close. Other people felt the same
way about the ridge, that's why there was a path here, a mile out from the foot of
the slope. Even the horses weren't eager to get closer; it took constant attention
to keep them on the path instead of angling off across the plain. He glanced at his
nearest companion, Buck Fever, to comment on that.
And the earth shook again. Harder this time than the night he'd first come to
Rocanis. It bucked like a wild horse, groaned and screamed and roared. The horses
screamed and bucked, too. Redfox kicked free of his stirrups and curled into a loose
ball as the combined motions threw him off his mount, rolled to get enough distance
from those flailing, iron-shod hooves. He was relieved to see his companions doing
the same.
As with that earlier, lesser quake on the night he'd arrived, a line of bluish
light snaked across the landscape, moving fast as a whiplash, spitting sparks and
small bolts of lightning. He flinched as one bolt struck the earth two paces from
his head, turning a little circle of winter-dead grasses to ash. He rolled over,
trying to see if the light was anchored at one end, or if it had any other
characteristics he could use somehow.
Nothing he could see. It floated in the air, undulating up and down as it
writhed back and forth; it seemed to be moving in other ways he couldn't describe.
It made his head ache just looking at it.
The rope of light reversed direction, snapping from north to south until one end
of it hit Spirit Ridge.
The world exploded.
Brightness, loudness, shrieking wind and a shower of rocks and pebbles and sand.
When stillness returned, he coughed dust out of his lungs and sat up, feeling
bruises. Some of the rocks had been as big as a man's fist, and a lot harder. But
none of his bones were broken, and his ears would probably stop ringing eventually.
He looked around for his companions. All present, moving okay, doing their own
looking around. The horses were gone, of course; he'd expected that. He completed
his turn to look at Spirit Ridge.
Behind him, Jonathannie gasped. "That's... amazing," she whispered.
"Scary," Buck added quietly.
The solid flank of the ridge had been split open as though whacked with a god-
sized axe. The cleft gaped wide enough for men to enter two abreast, and deeper than
seemed logically possible. Something purplish oozed out of it like blood.
"Looks like our job," Gaffer Smith finished.
+ ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ Edge of Night #4 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ +
Beginning near Morya:
Cloudrider had never been so frightened in his life. He had surrendered
physical control to the ghost of his teammate Nightwind, as instructed. After that--
he hadn't been sure what to expect. But not this. Was this what it was like to fly?
His eyes told him he was far above the earth, or whatever surface was down there.
But his body said he was running along a... along the surface of a wind. A cold
wind; it looked like faint blue glass under his feet. Or like a frozen stream,
wandering across a skyscape. Young Joan ran in front of him and a little higher.
Maybe they were climbing a slope of air. He sneaked a look downward again, horrified
at the concept. Was it good or bad that he couldn't recognize any landmarks? Maybe
he was too high to see anything he'd know. An image came into his mind of a rabbit
he had once seen carried away by an eagle. The eagle had dropped it from some great
altitude, Cloudrider had no idea why, but the rabbit had hit the ground near him--
"Relax," the ghost said. "I will not let you fall. And we have almost reached
the threshhold of the Hunting Ground."
"Hunting--?"
"A place," Nightwind said. "It is hard to describe to one who has not seen it,
and I suspect that even when you do, seeing it with the eyes of the body will be so
different that my description would be pointless. Think of it as like and unlike the
Spirit Lands: It is not 'real' as the living know it, but also not the..." the
ghost's voice faltered in his mind, "also not the true Spirit Land. It is a place
between the two, where necromancers go to do their work."
"Which, if I correctly understand what you said before, makes it a sort of hell
for you," Cloudrider said.
"Yes. I am not happy to be going there, but someone has to end this wicked
enslavement of souls. I was chosen."
"Chosen? By whom?"
"By that which oversees the Places of Death and the Dead. The Alastarians call
it Ahringol, but that's just a name. Names are too small."
"I think I feel better, having a name to call it."
"Then call it Ahringol, if you want." The ghost shrugged. "Ah, look ahead of
us! The edge of the Hunting Ground."
Cloudrider looked, and almost choked on fear. Ahead and above was something
that looked like the highest waterfall imaginable, and the widest--he could not see
either end. Just the dizzying plunge of... probably not water into the depths below.
Toward the 'real world' below.

DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
Greetings Lapur,
First of all, let me apologize on Dirty Sanchez's part for not submitting a column
last turn. For those that are interested: 11(+2)-14(+1)-8-17-21-10(+1)-7
Master attack, ADX decise and initiative. VH/VL Fav weapon Scimitar
Roadkill was a little shocked that his favorite was the SC, he was sure it was the
HA. Sanchez used the SC before and didn't perform well with it, and in his DA fight
he was not impressive with it.
Now on to business...as you all know the commission of Lapur refuses to recognize my
family name, and I've vowed to try and kill every opponent I face. After repeated
petitions, bribes, threats, and even begging the commission still refuses my request,
so I must remain true to this course of action. If the commission wants to see its
skilled and exciting fighters fall to a mutant who has no potential past this arena,
then so be it! I know that these actions have consequences, and each and every time
I step onto the sands of Lapur it could be me laying lifeless in the end. Until my
name is restored I will not waver and my strategy will remain the same.
Red Lily was the latest to fall but I believe that was only because of the AB12 curse
here in Lapur. Why can't an AB get a 13th win?????????? Miss Conduct, 12 wins DEAD.
Tessa, 12 wins DEAD. Red Lily, 12 wins DEAD. Most AB's die early in their careers
before they get skilled enough to defend themselves, NOT IN LAPUR!!!!!! I salute
your skill and your courage, and expect your stablemates to avenge your loss.
Duelmistress Goldie
SPY REPORT
Greetings, warriors of LAPUR! Once again I've been called out of retirement for
my abilities and insights into Spyreporting. Hmmmph! I always thought ABYSSAL
PLAINS was an over-rated team and they proved it with a 0-0-0! Ya gotta be quick on
yer feet! Keep your elbow off the table! Thrust! Block out the pain! DEATH MOB is
now ranked 13th with a 2-3-0 turn. MID EARTH showed LAPUR what they were made of as
they fought with a vengeance to walk off with 4-1-0. What's with TECHTONIC TINA?
She actually beat LAPUR's EMBEZZLING SCRIBE, and walked away with 20 more points from
the fight. Major screwup at VENUSIANS. MENSA lost 16 points to KYOKO. Some new
strategies, perhaps? Maybe MENSA will provide more easy wins... LAPUR has a
Duelmaster who doesn't sit back and get lazy. She challenged ESCAPADE's BUZZSAW
(16-7-1), which should prove (ahem!) interesting. BUZZSAW was reminded on the sands
why GOLDIE is Duelmaster. Wouldn't it be nice to have live subjects to practice on?
I hear some team is looking into the uses of convicted prisoners.
If at first you don't succeed, avoid. That'll get you in the Spyreports. LAPUR
thinks CROC FILES and their 353-359-25 is too much! If at first you don't succeed,
give up... In my day, no team with a 352-355-25 would scare me off! What's the
problem, BLACK SAMURAI? How well I know the feeling of being the most challenged
warrior, SPARKLE FARKLE! Don't make idle boasts, they may come back to haunt you.
MURRY of CROC FILES knows how to pick 'em. He challenged BRICKHOUSE of STREET
WALKERS who is up by 25. Now was this a wise move? MURRY perhaps got his just
desserts, seeing as he was bested by BRICKHOUSE and ended up with 86 recognition
points.
A fighter's lot is filled with strife, revenge, and killing. Some fighters
don't accept this. The best do. How long have I been here? I got people to see,
places to go...
Who knows what the future holds for a warrior. More fights, there's no doubt.
LAPUR is a nice place to live, but I don't like to live in nice places. I don't want
to overstay my welcome...-- Olaf Modeen

PERSONAL ADS
Storm Front -- With that wit, just a few fights worth of learning might have turned
the tide. Alas and alack their notorious reps have once again been found to be
justified. -- Scion
Rewrite -- The little peacock seems to like you, go figure, so I thought I'd take it
easy on ya. Mind you, if things had gone different, things would've gone different.
-- Buzzsaw
Chrome Crimper -- Crimpin your style's landed me in hero heaven. -- Petunia
Jason -- Well challenged bloodfeuder. Closer in working weapons, I think that may be
the key. -- Sparkle Farkle
Weipa -- Hmmmm...bet I could use one of those with some degree of proficiency. --
Turtle
Jon -- Those chances don't just drop into your lap...well that one did, but it was
the exceptional exception. Hope you benefited mightily. -- Pet
Mossman -- I guess I'd rather be lucky than good. -- Mad Dog Montana
Sparkle Farkle -- How's the hand? I'm not sure but I don't think I can claim to be
an offensive scum on that fight since the only damage you took was punching my
shield. -- Brickhouse
Mensa -- I was starting to think I wasn't going to break through your defense. --
Dirty Sanchez
P.S. Sorry about that last shot to the face, I would never intentionally try and
scar your beauty.
Turtle -- Nothing personal about that last challenge, just curious that's all. --
Jurassic Jordan
Userous Merchant -- I almost lost to a fill-in??????? Oh the shame!!!! -- Jurassic
Jordan
Jon -- You're no fun!!!! You only let me hit you once!!! -- Goldie
Ankaa -- Wait a minute, just when I get up, you fall down??? That doesn't seem right
for some reason. -- Brickhouse
Ora -- The Street Walkers "run most, but not all". Just sent a 5 wit to the DA,
would have made a great scum, but I don't want 2 on the team. I don't think I could
stay awake long enough to watch both of them fight. -- Roadkill
Storm Front -- Ouch! Aftershock would have been fun to run. -- Roadkill
Chetam -- Thanks for the soap, it tasted great! -- Dirty Sanchez
Jorja -- Thanks but if what you say is true...I'M NOT GOING!!!! -- Dirty Sanchez
Zero -- See kids, this is what happens when you lose a bet when drunk and have to use
a weapon that you totally lack the strength, size, and severely the deftness to use.
You loose to Zero Visability. I feel all dirty now. -- Kyoko
Yuris & Mid Earth -- So much for the token blood feud. Oops. -- Urd
Roadkill -- Foul words and rash insults aside. Congrats on Dirty Sanchez. He was a
filthy s.o.b, but a tough one. -- Sporkis
Lucy -- Whew! I'm glad I can flit out of reach, you Crocs are just too murderous. --
Firefly
Murry -- (with great gloom) You do realize that you have just condemned both of us
to adventuring in the Spirit Lands and the Realm of Ahringol? Like we didn't have
trouble enough being gladiators? -- Ghost of Cloud Tiger
Petrified Sponge -- What a bummer. I was hoping to squeeze some skills out of you.
Guess not. -- Boar Tusk
Guat -- What you're saying is, I should be afraid of someone who's short and hairy
and goes around in a mob? Hmm, good point. Okay, I will. -- Red Bull
Tori -- Don't tell me that you've bought into that male death-worshipping business?
Gods, woman, free yourself! If you want to be involved with death, we of the female
persuasion have our own, rather more entertaining, ways to go about it. -- Singing
Water
A.A. Shock -- Any time. -- Loovis, Creative Accounting Expert
P.S. I'll send you my bill.
