In another place:
"Keep moving!" Nightwind said. "Movement is your shield, it confuses them."
Cloudrider staggered onward. Would the stairs never end? His legs felt like
bars of stone. "Did I kill it?" he gasped.
Nightwind hesitated before answering. "You eliminated it as a threat," he said
finally. "And the others will be more respectful."
He climbed and panted and watched the circling shadows out of the corner of his
eye. They were holding back farther. That was good, wasn't it? He gathered enough
breath to ask, "Are we there yet?"
"Soon now," Nightwind answered. "This is the last stairway. Joan and Selumia
will be waiting for us." A pause. "The scavengers may try once more, before we
reach the top and go beyond their range."
Cloudrider's hand tightened on the hilt of this sword. "What do they want from
me?"
"That which makes you alive. I could not use any words for it that you would
understand. Ah! They come--"
Cloudrider tried to look around without stumbling. Stumbled. Focused on the
stairs. He was near the top, Nightwind said so. He glanced ahead. Yes! Only nine
more steps. He ran, right, left, right, pivot and slash at a misty something which
shrieked. Left, right, two patches of mist in front of him. Slash, lunge. Left,
right, left, slash, slash. One more step, a stumble, falling... onto something like
ground. He flung out his arm so as not to land on the sword. Pain in his foot that
was still hanging over the edge behind him. He rolled and twisted, slashing again.
One of the scavengers screamed and fell away into the void beyond the edge.
"That was close," Nightwind said.
Cloudrider would have replied sarcastically, if he'd had the breath for it. His
foot felt like it was on fire, and at the same time it was icy cold. He crawled
farther away from the edge of the plateau.
"I sense that Selumia and Joan are near," Nightwind said. "We must join them
quickly. This is not a good place to linger. Better than the stairs, but still not
safe."
Cloudrider pushed himself to his feet, tested the injured one. He could limp on
it, at least for now. "Which way?"
There was a moment of spinning dizziness, then certainty. "That way."
He squinted into the darkness. It wasn't completely dark, sort of like a
starlit night without stars. But the terrain was unfamiliar. He was pretty sure he
would be falling over things, if there were any things. "Are you ready to tell me
what we're doing here?"
If Nightwind had still had his own body, he would have sighed. "I don't like
this," he said. "We're... bait."

They bypassed Riztab, stopping at a little hamlet in the woods north of there.
A hot meal and one night sleeping in a warm stable. Math and Wolf went somewhere, to
some other building, probably to talk to local people. About travel conditions,
maybe. Agro didn't ask for details. That wasn't his business. He wished he knew
what his business in this mess was. Sure, he'd find out eventually, but he wanted to
know now. Was he wasting his time and risking frozen hands and feet on some ghost's
whim?
Agro glanced over at Redfox, who was oiling some piece of horse gear. How much
might this human know, and how much would he tell of what he did know? Maybe
nothing, Redfox didn't seem much of a chatterer. Still, worth a try. "What is this
Wild Hunt that we're looking for?"
Redfox shrugged, not looking up from his work. "Shaman stuff. I don't mess
with it." After a moment, his fingers stopped moving. "Okay, I guess it is our
business right now. And you don't have the same background, you wouldn't know." He
hesitated. "It's complicated, though. Let me think about this for a minute."
He frowned. "Okay. This whole business about the Spirit Land is complicated,"
he said. "There's a lot I don't understand about it. No surprise there, Uncle Wolf
has spent all his life learning it, I can't pick it up in a couple of days. But it
has to do with death and dying, all that stuff Math talked about two nights ago.
About protecting the dead--"
"I don't see why that's necessary," Agro said. "They're DEAD, after all."
"Yeah, that's where it gets weird. Different people believe different things
about death. I don't know if that means it happens differently, depending on how
they believe; probably not. People believe a lot of things that aren't so." He made
a sweeping-aside motion. "Not our problem. But souls are vulnerable, like Math
said, and there are people, mainly necromancers, I guess, who want them. It's a
power trip of some kind, I guess. So there's this whole hierarchy of guardians for
the dead."
"And the Wild Hunt is part of that hierarchy?"
Redfox hesitated. "Yes, I guess, since Uncle Wolf said so. But they don't do
JUST that. At least, I don't think--"
A horse at the other end of the stable screamed.
Both Lord Protectors were armed and moving without thinking about it. They
separated as much as the space allowed. The horse kept on screaming. That must be
audible all over the little town, and it would draw other people. Better to get this
under control first.
The horse went silent, and the Croc heard it collapse, smelled its death. He
was close enough now that he could see into that stall. A human was straightening
from the body of the fallen beast, face blank, eyes wide. Shocked, stunned, or maybe
in some kind of trance. Not a person you could reason with. And armed. The human
moved toward him.
Beside him Redfox said, "Zombies. We'll have to kill them all."

DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
Greeting warriors of Lapur,
I guess I get to write this column myself, so don't expect much. Originally,
Roadkill had written a song about me, but he said that even once he edited it, he
didn't think the commission would print it. Something about if they wouldn't allow
Goldie as a warrior name, they'd never print "Ode to Brickhouse". Apparently he must
have thought it was pretty good, since I could hear him laughing to himself when he
was writing it. I did get to see just a small bit of it but I have no idea what VD
is and why would it hurt when you pee?????
Normally it's custom for a Street Walker to challenge the #1 ranked challenger to the
throne, not this time. Aronwe, if you want the title you can challenge, but I won't
be challenging you after our last two meetings (shudder). I only made one challenge
and that was to Murry. While I admit I enjoyed you bashing your knuckles against my
shield, I need to know if breaking your weapon was the only reason I won.
Duelmistress Brickhouse
SPY REPORT
Well, what are you looking at, LAPUR? Ain't you never seen Snide Clemens
before? Ah, shaddup and listen to my news. Now keep the taverns open late tonight,
for there are sorrows to drown for EQUESTORS, whose 1-4-0 this turn dropped them by 6
into 12th. Ha! FORLORN turned their 3-2-0 turn into a 2nd place rank in the
listings this turn. Any better than this, and you get put on hit lists. Now let's
all watch ESCAPADE's heads swell from their 4-1-1 this turn. Haa ha ha ha! Big
shots, big talk, big deal. Of course, we're all terribly impressed to see URD win a
fight and gain 25 points, terribly. Tsk, tsk, URD beat ARONWE and ARONWE lost 46
points. You're breakin' my heart. Looks like LAPUR has some guts at least,
BRICKHOUSE the Duelmaster was this turn's most-challenged warrior. MURRY challenged
LAPUR's Duelmaster for a shot at the throne. And if variety is the spice of life,
LAPUR may be getting bland, as BRICKHOUSE stays top dog in the city. The Burning
Tree, humph! I've tasted better ale at mortuaries. Where do they get this stuff?
From LAPUR's trash dumps?
My mother always told me, 'If you don't have anything nice to say, start
talking.' I loved that woman. MID EARTH, I suppose you'll be glad to know you were
this turn's most avoided team. Care to know who is the most afraid of you? And it
looks like METAL MINCERS avoided them the most this turn. What a pack of would be
losers, if you ask me. Hmph.
Death and Taxes. The less death I see, the more it taxes my patience. Let's
see if anyone's dead or dying. Whoa! I'll even buy PETUNIA a drink tonight! Anyone
who can come back from the Dark Arena, I want to be on hers good side! It's about
time QETESH got beat for picking on warriors like CELADUS. Bravo, EQUESTORS. See
you at The Burning Tree. Not that I'll be buying the drinks, but I'll be glad to see
RED BULL and CARDOW HUNTERS at The Burning Tree tonight celebrating their bloodfeud
victory over ICE CRUST. Honor is like a chainmail shirt, it only shines through use.
Certain nameless cowards will doubtless rebuke me on this one.
There's got to be a better place in LAPUR to get a drink than The Burning Tree!
Any suggestions? Well, I've had enough of this drivel, and I'm sure you have too.
Off like a dirty shirt of padded leather. Glad to see the back of this place-- Snide
Clemens

Myrrh -- Sorry about the inconvenience to you. I'm looking for the Ents, now. Do
you know where they went? -- Copper Compacter
Mensa -- After that, and seeing you up there above me, how can I do anything but ask
for the next dance. -- Chrome Crimper
Foredoom -- Well, so much for that thought! It was all my manager's fault. --
Platinum Peener
Streetwalkers -- I want a date with your Duelmaster, even if he is built like a brick
xxxx house. -- Aluminum Awl
Brickhouse bea champeen! A tip o me hat ter yer Streetwalkers. Aye. -- Oremaster
Forte -- Whatta combo. Bring it on you bundle of weaponized fun, you. I dare say
just a tad more practice on your coordinationing and loooook out Lapur. -- Turtle
Jon -- Mid-life crisis. -- Petunia
Glauco -- We should have a flaggon n' talk over that one...you know, analyze it from
both perspectives. -- Dern
Thief -- I hate a thief. No it's not hereditary. No it's not my brand. It's just
this outfit is really snug on one side, that's all. Keeps me favoring my right...
that's also why my one eyeball keeps buggin out like it does. -- Hootchy Cootcher
Forge -- Bit drafty in the old arena today, don't you think? -- Crater
Murry -- In my defense, I did actually hit you five times. -- OTP Brickhouse
Weipa -- Ooooohhhhh, I may be on to something here. I hope that attack wasn't a one
swing wonder. -- Mad Dog Montana
Camulus -- Wait a minute, I didn't hear anyone say go. Oh well, thanks for the
skills (and not killing me). -- Jurassic Jordan
Red Bull -- Dude, you really need to cut down on the caffeine. You were shaking more
after the fight than I was before it. -- Daisy Chains
Amatsurata -- Huh? -- Done
Gods of War -- Welcome back. -- Roadkill
Ice Crust -- Jorja says she's going to hire nothing but total parries in the heaviest
possible armor for this team. I don't believe that, but I can see where's she's
coming from on it. It's a darned good thing she likes the company here; she shut
down in Jurine after a string of deaths like this. Of course, there's NO company in
Jurine, so who cares? -- Ghost of Dancing Cloud
Ava Lantch -- (groaning) Just call me "Screaming Waters" today. That was very
unpleasant. -- Singing Waters
P.S. Plus now, there's slush everywhere. Ugh. Awful stuff, slush.
Daisy Chains -- An intriguing aberation. Perhaps we should go somewhere private to
experiment with it, if we can find enough daisies. -- Red Bull, panting with
eagerness
Tye Foonette -- You're a cute little thing, aren't you? At least, once you get out
from under the clang. -- Horn Rock
P.S. I should probably take you aside and teach you stuff, yes? I know lots of good
stuff.
Gracchus -- That went better than I expected. Probably not as well as YOU expected,
but the way things are set up, we can't both be pleased, and better me, eh? Good
luck elsewhere, though. -- Firewalker
Daisy Chains -- Works for me. -- Singing Waters
Solar Eruption -- How did you survive the first minute? Then to go another four
minutes, wow! Over 1300 fights and this was the first time I have seen the endurance
statement in minute 4. Usually just fall on my face. -- Celadus
A.A. Shock -- Congrats on your successful Bloodfeud. My fellow warriors and I do not
hide after sending another warrior across the river Styx. -- Liternius
As threatened, here is a current manager list for this arena. Let me know if
I've gotten anyone's name wrong! -- The Saint, keeper of lists
