A cold hand fastened on his ankle in an iron grip. He risked a glance down. The blank-faced thing had hold of him with one hand and was trying to bring its blade to bear. The Croc chopped downward, removing the gripping hand. Redfox took a half-step closer and split the thing's head. "You have to destroy the brain to stop them," he said. Agro hacked at another zombie. "I thought zombies were the re-animated dead," he said. "A grotesque notion. But these are live people." "No, just their bodies are alive. The souls are gone; they're a kind of golem now." The Rirorni stood shoulder to shoulder with Agro; they had their back to a cliff of baled hay. "This is one of the things we're fighting against--necromancers who can and will do this to people." The Croc squinted into the darkness at the zombies crowding into the stable in front of them. "It must be easy to do, for someone to make so many." Redfox grunted and whacked at one zombie who pushed ahead of the others. "I wouldn't know." He chopped at another. "I don't want to know. It'd be easier if they felt fear of destruction, though." Agro grunted in turn, trying to drive back the bodies that just kept coming toward him. "Yeah." It was a big room for a log cabin, but it was a Shew's cabin, so it had to be. Ma Gog, a former gladiator, sat on a stool near the fire, poking at the contents of bubbling pot with a long spoon. She didn't look at either of her visitors as she answered Math's questions. "Of course I know that something's wrong in the Land Between," she said. "Anyone with the Second Sight knows." She scowled at Math, then finally turned to face the shaman, Wolf. "What are you going to do about it?" The old man shrugged. "Who can say? Whatever I can. The Lords of the Dead seem to feel that there will be something to do, once I delve into the matter." Ma Gog muttered something in her own language. Math snorted a spray of the beer he'd been drinking, coughed, and replied in the same tongue. "What?" Wolf demanded. "Nothing useful," Math said, still coughing and laughing. "Nothing we can use, although," he nodded a bow toward the Shewish woman, "she may well be right--" Ma Gog whacked him with her long spoon. "I said that things would be better managed if there were Ladies of the Dead instead of Lords." Screams from farther down the hill cut off any reply Wolf might have made. He leaped to his feet. "Those are horses," he said, slamming open the door, "and our companions are in the stable." Math and Ma Gog followed him down the hill, slipping in mud and the remnants of snow. The stable was clearly visible, even in the dark--it was burning, one end a mass of flames. The wind was already scattering sparks and pieces of burning shingle through the village. "Someone should have noticed," Ma Gog panted. "The alarm bell should be ringing!" Math caught her arm and pointed. They could both see a man carrying a piece of burning wood away from the stable; he tossed it onto the roof of a small house. "Some has noticed," Math said. "But he isn't alarmed." They smelled the smoke first. Redfox risked a glance over his shoulder at the piled hay. Nothing to see back there. Yet. "I think they've set a fire behind us," he said, cutting down another zombie. "It'd be a smart move for them," Agro agreed, his blade busy. "Is there any way we can get out of here?" "No idea." After a moment, he added, "There should have been an alarm bell or something. The smell of smoke is getting stronger, and someone should have noticed." "Maybe they're all zombies." Hack, slash, kick with a clawed foot, chop down. "Maybe even Wolf and Math have been zombie-fied." Redfox laughed and coughed on the smoke. "I don't think it's quite that easy," he said. "Especially, I don't think Uncle Wolf would be that easy. I hope not." Math and Ma Gog caught up with Wolf at the edge of the village, as he was wrenching a pole out of a garden fence. "Zombies," he said. "We'll have to kill them all. Aim for their heads." "All?" Math grabbed a pole of his own from the weakened fence. "Can't we... heal them or something?" "No. These people are dead. Think of them as golems. Kill them." "Best we stay together," Ma Gog said, reaching out a long arm to stop the shaman. "Don't go rushing off in all directions." "There are friends of mine in that stable," the old man said. "I don't leave my friends to burn to death." "Of course not. But it won't help anyone if we get killed one at a time because we're alone," Math said. The stable was on the edge of the village, and it was now the brightest light in the darkness, easy to find. The three of them worked their way along the backs of garden plots until they reached the corral where horses were running in panicked circles and screaming. They met the first zombies here, three who were calmly butchering horses. Two horses were down, gutted and hamstrung. Two of the zombies, also, knocked down and trampled by the fire-maddened beasts. Ma Gog killed a zombie with a spear thrust that smashed the skull. Weeping but focused, she reversed the spear and crushed another skull with the butt of her spear. "These were my neighbors," she said, "some of them were my friends!" "Their souls are gone," Wolf answered, destroying the third zombie. "All we can do is finish their bodies, and then pursue the necromancer who did this to them." "No death is slow enough," the Shew growled. She moved to the water trough, seized the pipe that brought water to it from some source higher up the hill, and directed the stream at the back of the stable. Clouds of steam exploded upward. Math and Wolf used their poles to knock smoldering planks out of the wall. Redfox and Agro staggered out through the hole, coughing and splattered with blood. Redfox turned toward the center of the village. "We have to--" Math pulled him around and shoved him toward the dark, silent hillside. "We can't do anything for those people, and they seem determined to burn down their town and immolate themselves. Let them. What we have to do is find the one who made this happen." "And we won't be the only ones looking," Wolf added. Away from the roaring flames, they could hear the faint sound of hunting horns, the baying of hounds. He pointed skyward. Shadows galloped across the face of the moon. "The Wild Hunt is out." * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===FREE BLADES REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 9 ZUKAL (turn 590): VENTRIIE of DARK WARDS (Dr. Doom, mgr.) Greeting Lapur, I have to make this short and sweet, since Roadkill is forcing me double my training. I thought it was because he really wants me to hang on to the title, but it turns out he just wants me to learn a parry skill so I'll get my invite and leave. I have the wins, enough political points for the whole team to graduate, but my learning apptitude is below what one would normally expect. ("Learning apptitude", I likes them fancy words...Jordan taught me that one, well I guess its two.) "Brickhouse?" "Yeah, Jordan?" "There's only 1 p, in aptitude." "One pee??? I don't have to go to the bathroom." (groan) "Never mind" Anyway, since Urd knocked Aronwe out of the challenger champions and saved me another beating I've decided to challenge both members of Will Duel 4 Mead for the title. I'm pretty sure I can beat Urd, Rewrite is not a good matchup for me if he's prepared. Good Luck to all, Duelmistress Brickhouse SPY REPORT If you were disturbed from your beauty rest only to have to watch a bunch of LAPUR brutes like you, you'd be grouchy, too. Later days, WILL DUEL 4 MEAD, since ESCAPADE took top team from you this turn, you guys are old news. Now keep the taverns open late tonight, for there are sorrows to drown for FORLORN, whose 0-0-0 this turn dropped them by 9 into 11th. Ha! DEATH MOB turned their 2-3-0 turn into a 5th place rank in the listings this turn. Any better than this, and you get put on hit lists. Now let's all watch MID EARTH's heads swell from their 3-1-0 this turn. Haa ha ha ha! Big shots, big talk, big deal. Of course, we're all terribly impressed to see ARONWE win a fight and gain 23 points, terribly. Tsk, tsk, ARONWE beat CHROME CRIMPER and CHROME CRIMPER lost 14 points. You're breakin' my heart. Looks like LAPUR has some guts at least, BRICKHOUSE the Duelmaster was this turn's most-challenged warrior. URD challenged LAPUR's Duelmaster for a shot at the throne. And if variety is the spice of life, LAPUR may be getting bland, as BRICKHOUSE stays top dog in the city. Kickbacks and bribes, kickbacks and bribes, how else do you think some of these guys win their fights? Skill? Ha! Well, let's take a look at some more misdeeds of you miserable sword-boys. STREET WALKERS, I suppose you'll be glad to know you were this turn's most avoided team. Care to know who is the most afraid of you? And who led the way in this mass act of cowardice? Let's see, well, whatcha know? It was WILL DUEL 4 MEAD. Ha ha ha ha! Now here's guts and stupidity all rolled into one, TORI challenged up 28 to take on SOLAR ERUPTION of VENUSIANS. And sure, TORI lost alright, but gained 4 recognition for hers pains. And pains they may indeed be! I guess I can give a little credit to CAMULUS of GODS OF WAR for challenging up by 20 to JON. CAMULUS won to get 103 points of recognition. Ah, now we come to my favorite part, where we see all the guys who are dead and gone, and get to see if their team cared. Nipped in the bud, you might say, was CRATER of ESCAPADE this turn. Course, I wouldn't say that, so much as have a belly laugh. Heh heh. Let's see, 10-5-1. Pretty good record for a living warrior. A sad one though, for a dead one. Such is the case for JURASSIC JORDON of STREET WALKERS. Tsk. And one more turn will show if CARDOW HUNTERS can successfully bloodfeud that elusive MURRY over FIREFLY. Honor is like a chainmail shirt, it only shines through use. Certain nameless cowards will doubtless rebuke me on this one. What does the LAPUR arena have in common with the inns? It's just as comfortable to sleep in either place. Ha ha ha ha! Well, I've had enough of this drivel, and I'm sure you have too. Off like a dirty shirt of padded leather. Paste this one in your scrapbooks, you'll need the kindling come this winter-- Snide Clemens DUELMASTER W L K POINTS TEAM NAME BRICKHOUSE 4131 31 11 0 119 STREET WALKERS (97) CHALLENGER CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME MOSSMAN 5045 9 2 1 109 CROC FILES (374) REWRITE 2926 23 13 1 106 WILL DUEL 4 MEAD (282) ARONWE 4883 18 11 0 106 MID EARTH (223) CAMULUS 4865 15 16 2 103 GODS OF WAR (424) URD 4987 13 4 3 103 WILL DUEL 4 MEAD (282) PETUNIA 4837 17 14 2 98 ESCAPADE (417) MURRY 4755 13 19 3 98 CROC FILES (374) -ALUMINUM AWL 4238 10 7 1 92 METAL MINCERS (256) CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME URAT 4889 22 6 1 90 MID EARTH (223) JON 4764 22 18 2 88 MEN (356) CELADUS 4948 13 6 1 86 EQUESTORS (158) AMIE 4718 15 30 2 83 CROC FILES (374) CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME CHROME CRIMPER 4296 21 10 0 81 METAL MINCERS (256) ENYALIUS 4863 13 14 1 78 GODS OF WAR (424) TURTLE 4974 12 5 1 77 ESCAPADE (417) WEIPA 4793 12 17 2 73 CROC FILES (374) LUCY 4922 10 12 1 68 CROC FILES (374) CHALLENGER ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME PLATINUM PEENER 4298 10 8 1 61 METAL MINCERS (256) -FOREDOOM 4448 9 14 1 59 FORLORN (382) ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME -FORTE 4447 9 14 1 56 FORLORN (382) SOLAR ERUPTION 5031 9 5 2 55 VENUSIANS (321) MIU 5060 7 2 1 55 WILL DUEL 4 MEAD (282) RED BULL 5062 6 3 0 53 CARDOW HUNTERS (359) CRAGS 5087 5 1 0 50 DEATH MOB (437) SONNY DAZE 5035 6 7 2 49 FORCE OF NATURE (312) MAD DOG MONTANA 4984 10 7 4 47 STREET WALKERS (97) -INCONEL INDENTER 4324 6 2 1 47 METAL MINCERS (256) QETESH 5026 4 4 2 44 GODS OF WAR (424) GUAT 5017 7 4 0 41 DEATH MOB (437) LITERNIUS 5049 7 5 1 35 EQUESTORS (158) HULIK 4992 8 9 1 34 MID EARTH (223) -COPPER COMPACTER 5092 3 0 0 34 METAL MINCERS (256) CHALLENGER INITIATES W L K POINTS TEAM NAME CALLISTO 5036 6 7 0 33 VENUSIANS (321) DAX 5015 4 7 0 33 DEATH MOB (437) AVA LANTCH 5030 5 9 0 31 FORCE OF NATURE (312) HOLKU 5099 4 1 0 29 WILL DUEL 4 MEAD (282) TORI 5048 3 5 0 29 DEATH MOB (437) ATHENA 4990 7 3 0 28 GODS OF WAR (424) CAIERA 5100 3 2 2 27 WILL DUEL 4 MEAD (282) MYRRH 5085 5 3 0 26 MID EARTH (223) A.A. Aye! Brickhouse, Champeen! -- Oremaster Yeah, sure, Oremaster; you wouldn't know what to do with her if you had her, you old coot! -- Ora Mensa -- I'd like to think I sprung you into The Big Time! And to think, I thought I won. -- Chrome Crimper Tori -- You were there. It was fun. -- Copper Compacter Streetwalkers -- I apologize for calling The Brickhouse a guy. It is obviously one fine specimen of femalehood. Yep. I still want him or her or whatever! -- Aluminum Awl All -- OOOOOOO...kay! Well. Apparently Petunia's not going anywhere anytime soon, as I'm betting she will be more than happy to tell of the unhappiness of the DA to anybody who's a wishing to listen...for the price of a drink. -- Scion Jon -- And I'm feeling much better now, thank you. -- Pet Solar Eruption -- *whew* In the fifth minute too...I don't believe you did that. I sure see where you get your name, if you weren't bad hurt there's no tellin where that fight would'a gone. -- Turtle Forge -- Ha Ha Ha -- awww...ya. Thanks for the reminder, I should'a got me one of those. -- Dern Dude Atria -- You see me lady-like natural-like going for your weak points? Nice outfit, you could fill it out a tad more, or less. -- Hootchy Cootcher One and Done -- "One" huh? I can count you know. And that was more than one. At least I'm pretty sure it was more than one. Could it have only been one? Nawwww, there was at least "Two," and that is more than one. So it's more than "One." That's established. Now, about the "Done" part... -- Crater Mounnnnnd -- Shamble on over here and buy me a round. I'll tell you the old legend about getting rolled and doing the dude who done you. It's a real cracker. -- Petunia Weipa -- Nice adjustment on the challenge strategy, hopefully I can return the favor. Nothing personal, just figure we should have a tie-breaker. -- Mad Dog Montana Crater -- My manager must like you. After my first loss I was supposed to go to the dark arena. But for some reason I get one more shot, but only of I win and raise a stat, or I'm meat! -- One and Done Murry -- At least I won that one fair and square this time. -- Brickhouse Myrrh -- Wow, if everyone taught like you, I might actually get good at this fighting thingy. -- Daisy Chains Urat -- I'm not sure what I was thinking with that one. Not the challenge, just the strategy I used. I might have to try that again if you don't mind. I might do a little better, I probably still won't win, but I got a feeling your just waiting to either kill me or teach my a boat load of skills. -- Jurassic Jordan Mensa -- Congrats on your invite. -- Roadkill and the Street Walkers Alumininiuim Awl -- I'd be more than happy to grant your request. -- Brickhouse P.S. Sorry, I never could say that word. Can I just call you "Tin Foil" instead? Red Bull -- I'm just a simple girl, but you have sparked my interest ;) -- Daisy Chains Aronwe -- Wow, I know I'm good but not that good. I think we can just chalk that one up to very fortunate luck on my part. -- Urd Roadkill -- Thanks for the welcome back. Even though my performance thus far has been less than stellar. -- Sovereign Done -- What???? -- Amatsurata Jurassic Jordan -- Sorry. I have a problem with going early. Maybe that's why I am still single. -- Camulus Mossman -- Um. Aah. Well. I guess I can thank you for not killing me, at least. -- Camulus Jon -- I would comment but I am still trying to pick up the rest of my armor off the arena floor. -- Enyalius Celadus -- Well fought. I hope that it satisfied your team's need for revenge. My body can't take much more punishment from you. -- Qetesh Ava Lantch -- You are quicker than I thought. Things should have turned out differently in that fight. I was lucky to win. -- Athena Ausonius -- Wow. Such a big stick for our fight. Are we trying to compensate for something in life? -- Amatsurata Congratulations to you, Mensa, for your graduation. We will surely miss you and all the skills you used to teach. -- Sovereign and the Gods Lapur -- Sorry for the absence of comments the last couple of turns....time flies when one is having fun. Let me try to catch up this turn. -- Storm Front, Mgr. Force of Nature Liternius -- Thanks for giving me a shot at avenging my stable-mate's death. I was very surprised at the outcome. -- A.A. Shok Horn Rock -- That was one heck of an initiation into the Arena. You let me know there is a lot for me to learn, but I think I am up to the challenge. -- Tye Foonette Miu -- Great fight. But victories in my record are not worth the losses to my stable-mates. -- Sonny Daze Cardow Hunters -- I honorably await the BF for CS. -- Ice Crust Jorja -- I know I have caused two of the deaths to your stable in the last four turns, but we beg you to not even consider leaving this great city. We are Force of Nature have always enjoyed the challenges you bring. -- Storm Front Singing Water -- If I had a better record I would have I thrown that fight so Jorja would not leave Lapur...but I think we both know that wins are not going to be many for us. -- Ava Lantch Athena -- While I would enjoy a win over those skills, I am happy to at least have one. -- Ava Lantch Red Bull -- Yeah, no kidding. I agree, "Thank the Gods!" -- Ice Crust Caiera -- Well fought. I am lucky to have survived the initial onslaught. Good luck in the future. -- Tye Foonette Miu -- I coulda sworn I told Storm Front to ask the commission to not match me up against you. -- A.A. Shok Forte -- Ya know, if you are going to hit me that hard you may as well kill me. -- Sonny Daze Ora -- Thanks for the pointer on the WS style. I would have to do some serious thinking (and maybe drinking) before I try that style again. -- Storm Front Dysomia -- Sunglasses...that's all? Try some SPF 10,000,000 next time you face me! -- Sonny Daze (getting a bit big for his britches) Ice Crust -- Tough for someone like you once spring really gets here, eh? -- Red Bull P.S. Does an ice crust become a puddle when it melts? Inquiring minds want to know. Dysnomia -- That's a new one on me. Sounds kind of like an asteroid? Or maybe one of the minor moons of Neptune. -- Firewalker P.S. We could look it up, but while some days encourage the satisfying of idle curiosity through web searches or what-have-you, this doesn't seem to be one of them. Glauco -- Do you find your vision cloudy? It seems like a genuine risk for you. -- Singing Water Holku -- Hmm, I seem to have failed to distribute largesse in the quarters where it will do the most good. I shall attend to this. Meanwhile, if we should meet again, teach me more than a single skill, please. -- Mad Dog Forsooth! -- Horn Rock P.S. Your name says it all, though I'm not sure what, exactly, the message might be there. Daisy Chains -- I was stunned and shocked by your charms. That's why I was shaking. What delight might be mine, if you looked on me in favor? -- Red Bull Our congratulations to Mensa. -- Jorja and the Cardow Hunters P.S. Uncle Wolf would offer congratulations also, if he weren't so busy. Solar Eruption -- Better take care of that insurance; you just might need it. -- Urat Mossman -- HEY NOW! Watch where you swing that thing; I might want to have children one day. -- Hulik Ava Lantch -- All of those new people in line looked awfully upset that you challenged me. <Smirk> -- Myrrh Roadkill -- I am right about so many things; which one are you speaking of? -- Visionist Brickhouse and Enyalius -- I do love the smell of plate armor in the afternoon. <grin> -- Aronwe Lucy -- You had me worried there for a moment. -- Urat Crags -- What rock did you crawl out from under? Well fought. -- Hulik Copper Compacter -- Dirmael warned me that ye ol borgs are tougher than nails. Till next time. -- Myrrh Urd -- If I could have dodged one more. -- Aronwe Jurassic Jordan -- You should slap your boss for making you use that glorified stick pin as your weapon. -- Urat Liternius -- You sure can take a hit. Heed my advice and avoid me. -- Hulik Daisy Chains -- My weapon selection had me at a disadvantage. Till next time. -- Myrrh LAST WEEK'S FIGHTS DERN DUDE was butchered by WYVERN in a 1 minute Dark Arena fight. REWRITE bested MURRY in a 1 minute veteran's Challenge duel.
