Cloudrider stiffened. "Bait how, and for what? More of those flying things?"
"No, they can't come up here onto the plateau. The void is where they hunt."
     "Then--"
"There are predators here, of course, but they're natural to the place. No need
to go after them," the ghost of Nightwind said. "They're a necessary part of the
ecosystem. Or maybe it's the ectosystem?
"Bad puns, just what I need," the Rirorni gladiator muttered.
Nightwind ignored the complaint. "What we're hunting, or baiting so that others
can hunt, are necromancers."
Cloudrider was silent for several minutes, limping along the route Nightwind
indicated. Finally he said, "I knew that. But aren't necromancers part of some
ecosystem, too?"
"An ecosystem of... mages?" Nightwind sounded surprised. "It seems odd. But I
don't know. You'll have to ask Uncle Wolf, if, ah, WHEN you meet him again."
"If..." Cloudrider nodded to himself. "Yeah, I thought it would turn out to be
like that. Damn." He felt Nightwind start to form a reply in his mind and then
pause. Just as well, an assurance that he would survive, coming from a ghost who had
already indicated this wasn't certain, just wasn't a thing he wanted to hear.
     "'Rider!"
Cloudrider looked up just in time to brace himself against Young Joan's
approach. She threw herself at him and hugged him. Felt good, even here.
Especially here. He hugged her back a little more carefully. She was, after all, a
Lady Protector, and he was still a (younger) gladiator in basic. He didn't want to
think what she might do if she decided he was taking liberties. "I'm glad to see
you, too," he admitted. "Nightwind said you were okay, but I'm glad to see you for
myself. Ah... what happens next?"
"A good question," Joan agreed. "Has Nightrider explained about us being...?"
"Bait? Yeah. I don't like it, but I figure I'm stuck with it now. So, what
does bait do?"
"We--" She looked up sharply and off to the side. "There's someone here.
Someone else."
"A bite so quick? I hope you've got the hook ready."
"I think we get closer and try to see who's there and what he's doing," Joan
said.

Traveling across this "plateau" in the Spirit Land was weird. Cloudrider
wouldn't have minded so much if it hadn't been for the wound on his foot. It didn't
seem to be bleeding, exactly, but it kept hurting, and it wouldn't bear his full
weight for long. And if the walking had been straight and level. This place was
like the landscape in a dream. Improbable terrain, exaggerated scales, ripples of
transformation that were disconcerting at best and might be disastrous. Nothing
seemed quite real, but when he walked into a "tree" that appeared suddenly in his
path, it smacked him as hard as a mundane tree would have. Why should the Spirit
Land have "trees," anyway?
In his mind, Nightwind said, "It has its own existence, but the shape comes from
the imagination and belief of living beings, and the expectations of their souls
after death. This is how your thoughts, mine, and those of many Rirorni over the
centuries have shaped it. Be glad it isn't the dwarven vision of the Spirit Land!
That's all caves and tunnels."
Ahead of him, Joan stopped and pointed. He came up beside her and looked. From
this distance, whatever distance it was, all Cloudrider could be sure of was an
approximately human shape. Small adult in size, unless it was a Shew. Just standing
and looking around.
A voice floated toward them. "Cool!"
Beside him, Joan sighed. "What do you want to bet we've found a young
necromancer, just starting out? Not what we're looking for at all."
"Yeah, maybe. But that brings up the question you didn't answer before. We're
the bait, okay. What's the hook? And what do we do with the catch when we've caught
it?"
Joan sighed again. "There was supposed to be someone else around to take the
fish off the hook. As to the hook itself... no one told me. Selumia doesn't seem to
know, what about Nightwind?"
"Uncle Wolf was to be handling that," Nightwind admitted. "I know scarcely more
than you two do, only that part of it that comes from being dead."
"This is a big help, I don't think," Joan muttered. After a moment, she said,
"Okay, here's what we'll do for now. We'll go and talk to this necromancer."
     "What!"
"You have a better idea? He must know something, or he couldn't have gotten
here at all." She started forward, dodging around the suddenly more numerous trees.

                                 DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
                             Notes from the arena champ.

     "REVENGE!!!!! I WANT REVENGE!!!!!"
"Just calm down Brickhouse, I can understand you want revenge for Jordan's
death, but just what to want me to do?" stated Roadkill as he walked around his desk.
"Let me kill Petunia, just give me the OK, and I will end her miserable life!"
"And just how to plan on doing that? You're so hell bent on killing her, why
don't you tell me just how plan on doing it? Let me guess...you're gonna hope she
forgets to bring her helm into the arena, and then you'll politely ask her to beat
her head against your shield until she gets brain damage and dies in the infirmary."
     "Well, I could...maybe I could...what if...AWW HELL, I DON'T KNOW, I JUST WANT
HER TO PAY."
"I'll do it. I'll kill her for you, and for the team."
"Stay out of this Montana until I tell you to get involved, is that
understood?!" replied Roadkill. All could tell by the tone of his voice that he was
not pleased with the situation, and his patience was growing thin with his entire
team. "Petunia just killed Jordan and she was twice the aimed blow that you
are...it be like leading a calf to slaughter. Jordan was an aimed blow, we all know
every aimed blow I've ever had has died, why should I hold a grudge against Petunia
or any member of Escapade? Just let it go...both of you."
"But boss, we have to at least bloodfeud to save face," pleaded Brickhouse.
"Fine, we'll bloodfeud if that's what it takes to put an end this situation,"
conceded Roadkill.
Both Brickhouse and Montana looked at each other with smiles on their faces,
"Ok, I think I can beat her," blurted Brickhouse.
Instantly Montana interrupts, "But I have a chance of killing her...which one of
us gets to fight?"
"Neither, I've decided to let Daisy Chains bloodfeud this turn."
"WHAT???" screamed Brickhouse and Montana in unison, "She'll get slaughtered."
"She has something to prove to me. I don't expect her to win, just survive,
that's all. Now that that's been said, I believe you both have training to do, and
there will be no further discussion on this matter from either of you...YOU CAN LEAVE
NOW."
Both warriors rose from their chairs and walked out of Roadkill's office without
saying a word. Silently the both walked down the hall and through the adjacent
doors. It wasn't until they reached the bottom of the stairs that Montana turned to
Brickhouse, "Will you do me a favor this turn?"
     "Sure was is it?"
"Don't learn a parry skill............if you do.......I'll be all alone."

                                      SPY REPORT

Like the magnificent Sun, rising upon the Dawn and exiling the Night for a Day,
I, Novgorodny Vir, return once again! FORCE OF NATURE after a sorry 2-3-0 might want
to consider abandoning the sands and taking up singing the 'Can't fight no more'
blues! What's a move up by 9 you ask? (alright, maybe you didn't ask) Cause for
celebration, according to VENUSIANS. MID EARTH posted a nice gain, to come in 3rd.
Everybody loves a winner... MEN had cause to celebrate, after JON got 30 points by
beating CAMULUS. Win some, lose some. Speaking of which, A.A. SHOCK was winsome,
after beating RED BULL and seeing him lose 25 points. BRICKHOUSE found out being
LAPUR's Duelmaster isn't all nuts and berries, receiving 5 challenges! Well,
Duelmaster BRICKHOUSE challenged CROC FILES' MOSSMAN. Is a 31-11-0 good enough?
BRICKHOUSE successfully staved off a grab for the roses by MOSSMAN of CROC FILES.
Does LAPUR have no one talented enough to dethrone her? Word has it one team in
LAPUR is using psychics to predict wins. They lead a charmed life!
A Zenmaster once told me, 'Does not the spinning wheel turn? And do not the
little birds cry out?' Any ideas? To quell some nasty rumors, the guys in MID EARTH
are not carrying any incurable diseases. No need to avoid 'em. Like a pup with its
tail between its legs, STREET WALKERS scurried away from MID EARTH. Oh, the shame!
Call 'im brash! Call 'im brassy! Call 'im brave! Call 'im sassy! ATHENA will face
SOLAR ERUPTION, up by 27. Aaaah, just call 'im dead meat. Soopreyes, soopreyes!
ATHENA emerges from the fray 3 points the richer. Good show, ATHENA! ENYALIUS
challenged URD! Who says GODS OF WAR are just a bunch of wimps! ENYALIUS of GODS OF
WAR kept his wits as he won victory over URD.
The moving sword slashes, and having slashed, moves on... Congratulations,
CELADUS. The manager of CROC FILES should have sent LUCY to the Dark Arena for
having a 10-12-1 long ago. You've heard about CAMULUS of GODS OF WAR. Death plays
no favorites, and neither do I. What was a 15-17-2 doing on the fields in the first
place? SINGING WATER of CARDOW HUNTERS, possessing a sorry record of 2-8-0, lost
hers last battle to CALLISTO of VENUSIANS. Young warriors, take note! Such is a
failure's lot! Forgive and forget is not my motto. Take heed, CARDOW HUNTERS, as
FIREFLY's death remains unavenged. Ask not a spymaster for counsel, for he will
pontificate long after you have fallen into an unconscious stupor.
All good things must come to an end. My fingers tire and I fear my incessant
prattling may cause unfair judgement upon my impeccable character. Can anything
compare to the pleasure of writing Spyreports for LAPUR? On that giddy note I take
my leave-- Novgorodny Vir

Built'n like yer brick xxxx house, she be. Gratters! -- Oremaster

Brickhouse -- You shall rue the day you called me Tin Foil! You shall. -- Aluminum
Awl

Tin Foil! Gotta love it. It fits, Awl! Tin foil, har, har. -- Chrome Crimper (bent
over in tears laughing)

Storm Front -- The waste is a wonderful style. Don't wait or drink too much. -- Ora

Aronwe -- I was crimped by a babe! I may not have liked it, but I loved it. (wink)
-- Chrome Crimper

Mad Dog Montana -- I was at my best. Now THAT was a peening! -- Platinum Peener

Congratulations to Street Walkers, top Lapur Team with an over 60% record. Well
done. -- Ora

Storm Front -- I was down below the Watta Hootchie during may-fly season, one time,
when I came across a talking frog. "What's hopping?" I says. "Time's fun when
you're having flies" he says. -- Scion

Sporkis -- It's not often you see the diff between 2 fight warriors and 4 fight
warriors so dramatically displayed. Since it wasn't my fighter's first fight, I'd
guess I'd better be about that feud'n thang...next cycle. When the strategizing gets
more harmonizing. Star alignments...you know. -- Scion

Jurassic Jordan -- Ug! We mourn your loss, we salute your record. I watched Crater
meet her Crater Maker annnnnd.... guess I just panicked. Wasn't aiming to kill you,
much. -- Pet-tunia

Crags -- Surf'n the wavefront of us elder statesmen, huh dude? S'gonna maybes bite
you someday. -- Turtle

Platinum Peener -- I honestly thought I had a shot until the knock down, well fought!
-- Mad Dog Montana

Urd -- Just call me Mensa Jr. -- Brickhouse

Callisto -- One of these days I'm gonna learn that it's ok to swing back. -- Daisy
Chains

Aluminum Awl -- With all this plate, it's easy to make a mistake inside the areana.
And since you seem to want to have a piece of me, I threw a challenge against you for
the title. -- Brickhouse (of course, you have to fight to get a piece of me)

Sovereign -- Stick with it, you notice that the Street Walkers aren't exactly tearing

up the arena lately. And considering that with the loss of Jordan, my team is pretty
much oatmeal, it won't be a quick turn around. Time to break out the leggo set and
start rebuilding ;) -- Roadkill

Sorry for the lack of comments lately. It's hard trying to get back into the swing
of things, evident by the one and only comment my brain dead mind could come up with
last turn. Things just seem to keep knocking the wind out of me in real life lately.
I could play catch up here, but it's probably better to concentrate on the here and
now. I'll try my best not to slip up again. -- Sporkis

Tye Foonette -- Luck had nothing to do with it. You're a warrior with great
skill.... -- Caiera
     Pssssst. Hey...Hey. -- Urd
What? What?! I said it with a straight face, now pay up. A girl makes one
mistake and you never let her live it down. Geesh. -- Caiera

Murry -- Wez havz motchin wepeeons. Mez bigners. -- Rewrite

Brickhouse -- While I didn't expect to win that fight going in I was still hoping so.
Maybe if I hit where I was aiming a little more it might have been different. Though
I admit I thought I had you a couple of times, but it's like chipping away at an
endless bag of lard. "How many swipes does it take to reach the center of a
Bricksiepop? The world may never know." You know someone should get some burlap
sacks printed up with that to sell at your fights. They make a fortune since you're
going to be around for half an eternity. Anyhow, regardless I still walked away with
what I wanted and then some. -- Urd

Mensa -- We had this great goodbye ceremony planned for you last turn. Then they
commission said all thank you speeches had to be under two minutes in length and it
had to be formal wear required. That was too much hassle so we decided just to hang
your framed likeness charcoal etching in the pub...rrriiiight over the jon. Sorry
this is what we get for giving the work to Rewrite. Goodbye well missed. -- Your
friends at Will duel 4 mead :)

Escapade -- Aaaaaahhhhh... Shoot! Damn. That wasn't pretty. My deepest apologies
about Crater. Please forgive me, it was not my intention. I was trained at the
Sporkis School of Fighting and if you haven't guess by yet he only knows one way of
teaching! For the love of the gods I don't know how to do anything else!!! -- Caiera

Aronwe -- If you could have dodged one more, then I would have hit you somewhere
sensitive, you be dead, and then neither of us would be happy... Well you wouldn't
be, I on the other hand would have gotten a bonus and a free mug overflowing with
froth. But I would be slightly disheartened when I enjoyed it. I would. -- Urd

Ice Crust -- What can I say? I like to travel light. -- Holku

Qetesh -- Wow, I actually did what I was suppost to for once. I guess those lessons
are paying off. Oh and sorry about that there at the end I thought we were still
going at it. I didn't even hear the bell ring. -- Miu
Sweetie this is duel We don't have bells. -- Urd
Really?? Then whats that jingling I keep hearing. -- Miu
Let's just say Rewrite misheard the boss singing a song called 'Jingle Bells'
last winter, and he has way too much free time on his hands. You really don't
     want to know. -- Urd

Mad Dog -- Sorry nope, everyone gets one. Just one. If I give out anymore my pay
gets docked. -- Holku

A.A. Shock -- Yeah, for future reference that doesn't always work Shocky. That or
someone on your team hates you. Judging by the way you fight...I would guess both.
-- Miu

Sonny Daze -- Well apparently they are worth it. Since the only reason you were sent
in the first place was that your predecessor couldn't get the job he was given done
the turn before and you were the only one that could. Thhhhaaaat might change after
a couple more fights from now. But I'm sure you'll be looking for easier prey by
then. -- Miu

Brickhouse -- Gettin' kinda stingy up there with that Golden Chair aren't ya? --
Storm Front, mgr. Force of Nature

Lapur -- Congrats on all of those that won the prestigious titles at the Lapurian
Awards. Although, how Tye Foon can be the most disliked warrior, I am not sure. I
think Sporkis may have fixed the vote on that one. -- Storm Front

Athena -- I enjoyed our round...I just wish I can win the close ones. Thanks for the
encouragement. Good Luck to you. -- Ava

Mensa -- I wish you well in your retirement...and going out with a positive note,
well done. -- Storm Front

Venus -- Good on ya for sticking with Mensa. I know she was a valued leader in your
stable. -- Storm Front

Red Bull -- Well, it would seem that if you dump any type of beverage on me, whether
is be a "Red Bull" or a "Mead" of another sort, I melt right to my knees. -- Ice
Crust

Holku -- Were you actually stabbing at my groin or were you trying to grab my non-
metal sword? -- Ice Crust

Myrrh -- Those of us "veterans" down here need to stick together. We do not want any
of those upstarts to think they can push us around. -- Ava

Singing Water -- Thank you for the chance to face you again. It was a favorable
match up for me, and given my record, I can not argue against them. -- Ava

Firewalker -- That was an exciting fight! I really look forward to another match up
when we have both learned more skills. -- Tye Foonette

Hulik -- Wow....thanks for being a great teacher! -- Sonny Daze

Liternius -- It seems I can only win when it counts -- A.A. Shock

All -- Hello everyone, I know it has been some time since I have done personals; real
life has been intruding as does happen from time to time. I hope that I am back on
track now. Although these personals may be a bit more pathetic than usual. -- Venus

Hootchy Coocher -- Twice in a row! You are not doing much for my confidence, of
course if you didn't put your best sword forward I wouldn't respect you as much as I
do. -- Atria

Daisy Chains -- I have to say I felt a bit guilty about that win. -- Callisto

Dax -- If I didn't have to pee so bad I could have lasted longer! -- Dysnomia

Tori -- Whew, if I had lost to you I am positive my manager would have lost all faith
in me. -- Solar Eruption

Enyalius -- Ha, ha, ha! I may have taught you a ton, but at least I won my last
match...Thanks for that. -- Mensa

To everyone who sent warm wishes on my graduation, many thanks! I am retiring from
fighting as I am sure that you all guessed. I will miss the action, but my old bones
have had quite enough. Good luck to you all! -- Mensa

Athena -- No, I was inaccurate. I have not faced more formidable foes in the
bathtub. But just to test it, I have a bathtub, so how about if we get together
there and test it? -- Red Bull

Ava Lantch -- Ouch. You came down on me, dare I say it? like a mountainside of snow.
Yes, okay, probably a hackneyed observation. It's been that kind of day. Not you,
the weather. Although I will admit that it isn't SNOWING. -- Singing Water
P.S. So far.

Myrrh -- Why is my sword all gummed up? Whatever you're doing, STOP. -- Horn Rock

Tye Foonette -- Just a little bundle of energy, aren't you? But it's all talk,
chick. Calm down and stop making waves. Damn, I can't seem to restrain the weather
puns. Well, I suppose you can't be SURPRISED by them, and I have to say something.
-- Firewalker

Gracchus -- Gods, I've wanted to do that for so long! Not you, particulary, anybody.
Take 'em by the throat and rip it out, yeah! -- Mad Dog

Daisy Chains -- I noticed the sparks when we were together! -- Red Bull

Storm Front -- Leave? Not even a chance. This is the most enjoyable arena I run in.
-- Jorja
P.S. Well, okay, maybe a chance, but not a big one.
