Joan didn't know if that was good or bad. It gave them a common ground, but... gladiators could be unpredictable. Especially young ones. "Who are you?" the newcomer asked. "Necromancers too?" She squinted suddenly. "You look weird." "We are unusual," Joan agreed. "We are two who live, paired with two who have died." "I never heard of something like that, is it even possible?" The young necromancer slapped herself on the forehead. "Duh. Of course it's possible, or you wouldn't be doing it. Why? Are you doing it, I mean?" How much to tell this kid? "It's a complicated story," she said finally. "Let me think about how much to tell you. How about if you start by telling me why you're here, what being a necromancer means to you." She looked surprised. "It's, well, it's a kind of magician, you know? Tell the future by questioning the dead." She frowned. "The only dead people I questioned didn't know the future. They said nobody did, not even the gods. But they told me some other cool stuff, so I guess it was okay." "A necromancer is a specific kind of magician, but these days the definition is wider. What do you do, raise the dead, trap souls, animate skeletons?" She looked horrified. "No! I don't-- Gods! I never--" The list of suggestions seemed to take her aback. Maybe even repulse her a little. As it should! Necromancy as it was commonly practiced was a dirty business. "That's what necromancers mostly do," she said. "Well, it isn't what *I* do! Um, I do know how to call on the spirits of the dead to ask for information. I've done that. And I know how to, well, a sort of 'last rites' thing, to lay unquiet spirits, ghosts, you know, but I've never actually done that yet." Joan relaxed a little. She only new the clean side of necromancy. They could work with her, perhaps. At the least, make sure she didn't take a dark path into his future. "We're attracting attention here, so near to the gate he used," Cloudrider said. "We should move." Joan glanced around, using her own senses and those of her dead teammate Selumia. Yes. Ill-defined but hostile presences in the misty air. "Were you going somewhere particular?" she asked the young necromancer. She shook her head, looking around also. "No, I just graduated. I'm just, you know, exploring. I have a lot to learn about necromancy, and, well, I'm from Lirith Kai, there was nobody there who could teach me." "We can show you things," Joan promised. Alastari: The woods between Malcorn and Zuwayza were dark, and colder than the Croc liked. A humid jungle in, at the least, subtropical warmth, that was what he wanted to hunt in. Jungle verging on swamp. His tongue flicked out and back. No doubt this chill, misty forest was rich enough, if you were attuned to it. But it was not a proper hunting ground for his kind. He hunched a little in the thermal robe, glad of the warmth but suspicious, still, of the motives of those who had made it and given it to him. Why were they doing this? It wasn't normal for humans to seek the company of his kind. Even all of them being associated with the arena wasn't reason enough. The variations of their passage through this forest put Wolf by his side for a few paces. Agro looked over at him. "Why am I here?" The old shaman shrugged. "The real reason, the one behind the lesser reasons such as 'because you came this far, so why not?' I can't be sure. There are always things the gods and the greater spirits don't tell us. My guess is that it is because you're cold blooded. You have no internal heat of your own. One of the ways in which the dead can attack the living is by sucking the warmth of life out of them. Us. You have life without warmth, and thus a defense against such an attack." "I can't live in the absence of warmth," the Croc answered sharply. "This robe is proof of that!" "True, but the warmth of that robe, of the sun, fires, the world at large, is not something the dead can tap. So I think you have a protection of a sort which the rest of us do not." Wolf slanted a glance up at him, Agro saw his eyes gleam. "And this is your fight, too, despite the ways in which you are different from us. You Crocs do have souls, and the dead can prey upon them." Agro shrugged and looked away. Talk about things like that, about souls, made him uncomfortable. He didn't understand anything about it, so better it was left to others to deal with. Better to watch Redfox, who was picking their trail through the trees, a business that the Croc understood. So he was watching and already half-primed when the Cardow Hunter suddenly threw himself to one side, his sword flicking out. In the night, all he saw was a looming shadow, but he could smell blood and a carnivore's breath and something beginning to rot. His own sword was in his hand, and he moved forward to partner Redfox in fighting whatever it was. Math was there, yes, and a gladiator besides, but Math was old. Agro didn't think this was an old man's fight. Math moved sideways and ahead so they could make a three-pronged attack. It was a pleasure to hunt with people who knew how it should be done. Too bad they didn't have spears, but a spear in these woods... bad idea. Too bad they couldn't see clearly what they were fighting. He lunged in and back, knowing he'd cut the beast badly. Knowing it was a beast by the fur he'd felt, matted and stinking. But he should be smelling fresh blood now, and he wasn't. His thrust must have gone deep enough to draw blood, and the other two were moving in, they wouldn't be missing, either. "A bear," Wolf said. He sounded perfectly calm. "Recently dead, reanimated by sorcery. Enhanced by the addition of a stolen human soul. To destroy it, you must destroy the brain, else every part of the body will remain active and hostile." "Our approach was detected?" Redfox's voice floated out of the darkness beyond the bear. A flurry of movement and a grunt of effort from the same direction. "This would be easier to do with light." "Easier for the bear, also," Wolf countered. He was closer now. Agro swatted at... a paw, probably. Cut it off, by the feel of the blow landing. Remembered that it would remain "active and hostile" till the brain was destroyed and stamped downward. Something squirmed under his foot, and he drove all his weight down on it. The damned forest floor was too soft to crush anything against. He wished the bear would roar, growl, squeal with pain, something. He didn't like fighting silent shadows in the darkness. Too much movement in the dark, the Croc wasn't sure which was the bear and which his companions, now. Blows landing, grunts of effort. Fresh blood. Human blood, he knew that smell from the arena, and certain encounters in dark alleys. A sudden flare of light in a whistling arc like a falling star. The whole scene lit in one brief instant. Wolf swinging his walking staff at the head of a shaggy, tattered bear. The bear all bloody claws and long yellow fangs, eyes that gleamed red. Redfox with blood on his arm and side, his sword steady in his hand. Math in mid-lunge at the bear. Thud of wood on flesh, crunch of shattering bone as the light winked out again. A tingle in the air, across the skin, and the smell of lightning about to strike. "Move now," Wolf growled. "Get clear. This last is a shaman's work." * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===FREE BLADES REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 9 ZUKAL (turn 593): VENTRIIE of DARK WARDS (Dr. Doom, mgr.) Greetings Lapur, First of all let me apologize for the missing column last turn. I thought I had sent it but it must have gotten lost along the way, it happens. To be fair, you've all read my columns, so you know you didn't miss much. To be quite honest, I'm very surprised I'm still here. Roadkill says I\'m one of the luckiest warriors he's ever managed, guess he must be right considering my skills and stats. A couple of turns ago, I challenged Mossman, and while I managed to win, I gotta disagree with the spyreport that I "luckily beat" him. I know I'm not that good but only 4 hits from that little pigsticker is not going to make me quit, hell I run into more closed doors leaving the guildhouse than that. This past turn my challenge got through to Urat (you have to realize, we rarely get our challenges through, and when we do, we ussually lose). I think it might have gone differently if I hadn't broke his weapon on his first attack. Very impressive endurance and deserves a rematch. This turn, my challenge goes out to Chrome Crimper, a good old fashion scumfest. I should mention that since I can't seem to pick up a parry skill, Roadkill has decided that the commision is going to have to force me out to leave. Good luck to all, Duelmistriss Brickhouse. SPY REPORT Good day, friends and fiends, welcome to your friendly neighborhood spyreport. I doubt LAPUR will ever be the same. It seems the training can make the difference, as WILL DUEL 4 MEAD is pushed out of top team by VENUSIANS, who came from 4th with a 4-1-0 this turn. Now keep the taverns open late tonight, for there are sorrows to drown for EQUESTORS, whose 1-4-0 this turn dropped them by 4 into 11th. VENUSIANS stable has parlayed this turn's 4-1-0 into a 3 space move up the rankings. This brings them up to 1st place. Good work, guys! The MID EARTH guild has had a 4-1-0 turn and deserves to be watched in the future. You never know where this kind of thing can lead. And let's see, SOLAR ERUPTION fought MIU and gained 18 points and contributed to VENUSIANS' 4-1-0. MIU has lost to SOLAR ERUPTION, falling 12 points, while helping make WILL DUEL 4 MEAD a 2-3-0 turn. Well done, LAPUR, the Duelmaster was this turn's most challenged warrior. Perhaps BRICKHOUSE is not as thrilled, being challenged 3 times. ARONWE challenged for the Duelmastership this turn, attempting to dethrone STREET WALKERS' warrior. The attempts to dethrone the Duelmaster have failed, and BRICKHOUSE remains LAPUR's top warrior for another turn. Can someone confirm a rumor for me? I hear the top team makes their losing fighters do dishes at The Burning Tree until they win. Maybe? The crowd's roar, the smell of iron and leather, mixed with sweat, what more could a warrior ask of life? Well, besides that. I also notice that the MID EARTH stable was the most avoided team this turn. Come on LAPUR, what are you afraid of? And guess who avoided MID EARTH stable the most? Believe it or not, it was BLACK SAMURAI. Anyone surprised? A coward dies a thousand deaths, a brave man only once. Wise men know this to be true. Is it really true that LAPUR has more dishwashers per capita that fighters? Just thought I'd ask... I like this place, LAPUR, the taverns have old wine, and young serving girls. Who could ask for more? It's been nice chatting with you, until we meet again, keep your swords sharp and your hammers heavy. Until you see my quill in LAPUR again, farewell-- Alarond the Scribe DUELMASTER W L K POINTS TEAM NAME BRICKHOUSE 4131 34 11 0 147 STREET WALKERS (97) CHALLENGER CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME JON 4764 25 18 3 122 MEN (356) REWRITE 2926 25 14 1 113 WILL DUEL 4 MEAD (282) URAT 4889 24 7 1 111 MID EARTH (223) MOSSMAN 5045 10 4 1 106 CROC FILES (374) ENYALIUS 4863 15 15 1 105 GODS OF WAR (424) -CHROME CRIMPER 4296 23 10 0 104 METAL MINCERS (256) ARONWE 4883 19 13 0 100 MID EARTH (223) TURTLE 4974 14 6 1 100 ESCAPADE (417) -ALUMINUM AWL 4238 10 7 1 92 METAL MINCERS (256) CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME AMIE 4718 15 33 2 86 CROC FILES (374) URD 4987 14 6 3 86 WILL DUEL 4 MEAD (282) CELADUS 4948 14 8 2 82 EQUESTORS (158) SOLAR ERUPTION 5031 12 5 2 78 VENUSIANS (321) PLATINUM PEENER 4298 11 8 1 77 METAL MINCERS (256) PETUNIA 4837 19 15 2 76 ESCAPADE (417) WEIPA 4793 13 19 2 70 CROC FILES (374) CHALLENGER ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME A.A. You do! -- Copper Compacter Enyalius -- Sometimes the gods of war shine down upon you, and sometimes they don't. Salute. -- Chrome crimper Yon Brickhouse done 'er agin! Aye! - Oremaster Ora -- Is it just me or have the lower levels turned into Carnage Central? Drat! A lot of it is me. What's gotten into the gang? [nothing that wasn't there before] Ha! S'posed to be a rhetorical question. -- Scion Sporkis -- That wasn't me laughing. I know brutal bloodfeud deaths on the sands are not funny. I'm just sorta flummoxed over the killing spree my team of saintly angels has recently embarked upon. It seems getting fighters established now-a-days is becoming a daunting pro-po-sition. Oh well, in the humble words sir..."Feud Away." -- Scion Mad Dog Montana -- Expeditiously feuded. Hope I didn't put you out. Hold you up for an important dinner engagement or something more pressing. -- Petunia Salantra -- It hardly seemed fair, a highly trained, experienced, and good looking 4 fight fighter like myself challenging a lowly, scruffy 2 fight fighter like yourself. But then "Fairness" is not a concept generally applied to the arena sands. -- Hootchy Cootcher, killer Mossman -- Cheerio Governor. I took a little star power out of the shooting star. It's going to do you a world of good, messin with the lower ranked. You'll thank me for this loss someday. -- Turtle Caiera -- Go the lonely way. You know, it's a funny thing about life...no one gets out of it alive. <shrug> Crowd loved it. -- Bonzo Those crowds! Tin Foil -- Don't take it personal, hon, I told you I just can't say your real name. -- Brickhouse P.S. How do you "rue the day", do you have to get up early for that? Yep. Ora -- Thanks for the recognition, trust me I notice you're right on my heels, and Will Duel 4 Mead and Escapade are climbing the ladder quickly. Just another reason why I love this arena!!! -- Roadkill and the Street Walkers Petunia -- I hope you get a nice cold frost. -- Ghost of Jurassic Jordan Urd -- You and your manager should see a doctor, constant diarrhea of the mouth can have long term effects. I would hate to see you or Sporkis get lock-jaw, it might prove fatal. -- Brickhouse Stormfront -- "Golden Chair", now THAT'S FUNNY!!! -- Brickhouse P.S. You know me, so it has to be fool's gold. Callisto -- Don't feel guilty, you proved to be the better warrior. Besides, you taught me well, thank you very much. -- Daisy Chains Red Bull -- Your scimitar carving through my helm it not the kind of sparks we girls like. -- Daisy Chains Ora -- Almost a 60% win record with those bare stats??? May the gods protect us all if you actually get a godling!!! -- Roadkill Ellishood -- Welcome to Lapur. I hope your stable has much success here. -- Roadkill, manager of the Street Walkers Urat -- Thanks, that the first time anyone has actually beat the dents OUT of my armor and shield (well, during the fight I mean). -- Brickhouse Petunia -- One Skill!!! %$#@$@@$# SKILL!!!, great...going to the tourney mistimed, hope to rape you even though I new I would lose...and ONE &)*@#$@ SKILL. Whew...glad to get that off my chest, thanks for not killing me. -- Daisy Chains Sonny Daze -- At least we both learned well. -- Daisy Chains P.S. That was one of the best times broken weapons I've ever seen, I do believe it saved my life...now go away Fhrain -- Hey, giving me a spanking it extra buddy. -- Josie Wails Lucy -- Sorry, I took out my bad tourney showing on you. -- Sexy Celia Petunia -- Did you throw that fight??? How did you kill Jordan, when I didn't even break a sweat, and I suck!!! But since we have avenged her death, consider the matter dropped. Good Luck to you and the rest of Escapades. -- Mad Dog Montana Ellishood -- Welcome to Lapur. It's always nice to see some influx from Noblish Island. While we're always up to a good amount of Shenanigans *cough* *cough* excuse me :). As I was saying competition is a little more cut throat around here. Hope you can keep your head above water. Best of luck to you. If you need some help feel free to ask we're all pretty much willing to lend a hand to the new guys around here. If you need a shoulder to cry on, contact Stormfront of Force of Nature, since he's usually whining anyhow. Zing! :) -- Sporkis of Will Duel 4 Mead Bonzo -- I guess your Karma ran over my Dogma. Is this hole in my head suppost to itch this much? -- Ghost of Caiera Scion -- Well what goes around comes around I guess. I could be more upset about it, but truth be told Caiera was average at best. I'm more frustrated at losing Holku during his last fight in the tournament; he had some potenial. So you don't have to worry about Urd knocking at your door at three in the morning looking for blood for the next four moon cycles. She's a little upset at losing her self appointed 'protege', but her definition of that was someone to run and refill her mug and rib constantly so I guess we'll give her one of the new recruits to keep her happy. Still while we're not terribly upset, there still that pesky thing about honor and what not. I guess how did you put it? When the strategizing gets more harmonizing. Star alignments... :) - Sporkis Montana -- Imagine my surprise when I saw a familar face staring at me across the sands at the tourney. I'm just sorry I couldn't take it easy on you. Look at the bright side, at least you still have all your limbs attached. Seriously, if anything you have helped me discovered some insights about my inner self and hopefully I will be a better person for it here on out...*mpmph* -- Trying to keep a straight face, Urd Amiez -- Fifth timez ith not thez charrm Iz guethth. Neitherrz wath onez thrrough fourrz. Babieth if youz really wantz mez bodieth thatz much. A nightz of drinkth and a donkeyth show forrz ambiouncez and I\'m good toz goz! -- Rewrite Liternius -- The gods must have a plan for you. Nothing else explains how you took that many shots to the noggin and still be standing at the end of the match, let alone alive. Me thinks I may not want to run into you again, as I may not be as lucky next time. -- Miu Weipa -- They really should stop giving me pointed sharp weapons to use. -- Urd Enyalius -- Well, I've been stepping over and on people on my way to the top. I figured it was about time to give a little back. Still, as to whether it was luck or skill I think it was a little of both. I had you soiling your draws more than once durning that fight, just couldn't seem to land that knock out shot. I've been working on my aim since then. Wanna try again? :) -- Urd Chromez Crimperz -- Noz youz owez mez thez mead. Becauthez of youz Iz wath tooz tirred toz perrforrm atz mez nightz job and wath canned. Thez said it wath becauthe noz woman in her rightz mindz would wantz toz look mez hairiez back. Iz knew it wath becauthez of thez bagth under mez eyeth. -- Rewrite Tori -- Careful! You almost started a horrible reversal there. It's bad when the Cardow Hunters are known as "most likely to die." It would be much worse if we were known as "most likely to kill." Jorja would disown us! She might consign us to oblivion, which I understand is a hamlet around an unreliable well somewhere down in Ratan, and bring in (gasp) some dumb Middle Way team. Can't have that! -- Red Bull Ava Lantch -- (gloomily) Of mud, probably. It's been nothing but flood warnings around here. If you have a teammate named Hy Water, he's probably local. Or a military man named Major Flooding. -- Horn Rock Illyria -- (startled look) I thought you were a geopolitical region somewhere in, um, hmm, I don't seem to have a referent for that. I guess that means you aren't. Whatever. -- Firewalker Ausonius -- (pouncing) Never hit the ground against me, or you're a chew-toy. -- Mad Dog Black Torch -- (earnestly) I don't look like a golem, do I? I'm sure I'm not really one. I don't know why the Commission said that. -- Cloudshadow P.S. Oh, joy, I'm "slow and inactive" but "incredibly quick and elusive." Quite a trick, eh? Maybe I am a golem after all. Sovereign -- Consider it an honor and do NOT seek a kill from us! -- all the Cardow Hunters Amatsurata -- Hey, all that stuff is just, you know, "the fortunes of war." You can't be held responsible for it. Stuff happens. -- Horn Rock LAST WEEK'S FIGHTS TORI was dealt death by DARK CHAMPION in a crowd pleasing 1 minute Dark Arena fight.
