"Do we continue to try following the man with the cloak of souls?" Young Joan
"Can we still follow him?" Cloudrider asked. "I mean, is there still any kind
of trail?"
Both were silent for several minutes, consulting their ghosts, Necroma guessed.
She extended her own senses as she'd been taught, seeking, well, anything at all.
She didn't really know what she might find or feel. Nothing. How could there be
nothing? That man was out there, and probably other things like the spirit-wolves
that no one had told her about. She "looked" harder. There must be something out
A moving shadow, barely glimpsed in the distance. But it had the texture of
clustered souls, and of pain. The cloak of souls, or something like it, Necroma
decided. She turned slowly, seeking a direction. Yes. There. She opened her eyes
and saw that she was pointing into the darkness, and her two companions were staring
at her in expectation. "That way."
     "Close?" Cloudrider asked.
"No... it feels like very far."
"Then we must go quickly," Joan said. "Are you going to lose the 'scent' if we
"I don't know, I've never done this before, but he's getting away. We don't
have time to talk!" She set out at a run, stumbled and almost fell over some
obstacle unseen in the murk, and slowed down to a jog.
The others were trotting beside her. "Just like they tell us in the arenas,"
Joan muttered, her words falling into the rhythm of her steps. "Pace yourself.
Pacing is everything."
"I got really tired of hearing that sometimes," Cloudrider added.
Necroma huffed a laugh as she trotted. "Me, too. For all that it's true." She
checked her perception of their quarry. "I can still feel him ahead of us," she
reported. "But I think... he's moving, too. I wish we could run. Who ever heard of
a chase at walking speed?"
But they couldn't see well enough to run, so they kept walking, as the man they
were following seemed to be doing. Slowly the distance between them closed.
"He is having to find his way in the darkness," Cloudrider said. Or maybe it
was Nightwind, his ghostly companion. "The souls he has trapped in his cloak will
not aid him! But we have only to follow his trail, and if we encounter some
obstacle, our soul-companions will warn-- Oof!" He tripped, staggered, and just
caught himself from falling.
"Unless you're being careless and not even trying to see your path," his
companion ghost remarked. "Carelessness and over-confidence are their own rewards."
Cloudrider didn't answer, which Necroma figured was smart on his part. She
hoped he was paying attention to what he could see of the footing. It seemed to be
getting worse. Like tangled grasses changing to occassional brambles. She didn't
know if that's what it really was, her training hadn't covered Botany of the Spirit
Lands, but that's what it felt like. In fact, the brambles were getting a lot worse,
so that she had to slow down to a walk again. But the man ahead of them was slowing
down, too.
"We're catching up," Necroma said. "And I think he's changing direction.
"Good," Young Joan started slwoing, "because Selumia thinks we're coming to a
bad piece of ground. Or... dangerous in some way, it isn't clear exactly what she
Something that in the living world might have been cold starlight was tempering
the darkness, so that pieces of the landscape which had merely been black masses
before now began to look like rocks and maybe trees. Necroma stared into it, willing
more detail to emerge as they approached. There seemed to be a warmer light behind
the nearer obstacles, and she thought the man with the cloak was moving toward it.
The idea of getting warm had a great appeal. She hadn't realized how cold the Spirit
Lands were. She began to put on more speed, after all, she could see better here, so
why not? Voices called out behind her, but she barely heard them, they were nothing
to do with her. They were far behind, anyway. She wove through the dark columns of
great trees, felt the grass and brambles part for her. Her passage was so swift and
easy, it was almost like flying. She could see the door ahead, a massive double door
of some substance she couldn't identify, deeply carven all over but blurred with age
or mist, and a warm light coming through it.
Yes. This was the place she had been looking for. This was the place where she
would find the answers she had sought all her life. She leaped over the doorsill,
hands outstretched eagerly.
Joan and Cloudrider heard her scream as the lights winked out.

                                      SPY REPORT

Greetings, Warriors of LAPUR. Allow this humble servant Novgorodny Vir to give
you a respite from the fights in the form of this Spyreport. WILL DUEL 4 MEAD? Who?
BOHICA is the top team these days, buddies! What's a move up by 7 you ask?
(alright, maybe you didn't ask) Cause for celebration, according to CARDOW HUNTERS.
Good things come to those who fight well, as METAL MINCERS can attest, moving up by
2. CARDOW HUNTERS had cause to celebrate, after RED BULL got 27 points by beating
CELADUS. Win some, lose some. Speaking of which, FHRAIN was winsome, after beating
SOLAR ERUPTION and seeing her lose 17 points. Well, Duelmaster TURTLE Dark Arena
Challenged DARK ARENA's WYVERN. Is a 19-8-2 good enough? The crowds were amazed
this turn, as WYVERN killed the Duelmaster, TURTLE, leaving ESCAPADE in mourning.
Even 68 points weren't good enough to save TURTLE from MOSSMAN. LAPUR welcomes
MOSSMAN as the new Duelmaster! Word has it one team in LAPUR is taking speech
lessons to try to bore their opponent to death. I'll bet it works.
My mother wished me to avoid conflict, and seek the gentle trade of Spyreporter.
But warriors aren't supposed to avoid fights! To quell some nasty rumors, the guys
in WILL DUEL 4 MEAD are not carrying any incurable diseases. No need to avoid 'em.
The warriors of WILL DUEL 4 MEAD found their efforts at combat frustrated as BOHICA
apparently had more important things to do than fight. Everyone is famous for
fifteen minutes, and AUSONIUS is it right now. Most challenged warrior. Isn't
EQUESTORS proud! MAD JACK found himself challenged by a warrior 18 below: KROOGA.
KROOGA of MURDER OF CROWS kept his wits as he was beat by MAD JACK. Mismatched by 10
points, DANG IT DEBBIE was subdued by FORGE DEATHWIND. Is this really worth noting?
I thought FORGE DEATHWIND showed great skill and promise when he subdued DANG IT
DEBBIE. All right, so I slept through it! Big deal!
The moving sword slashes, and having slashed, moves on... I hear ALTERIUS of
DEATH MOB tired of the battles and was thinking of becoming a priest. AUSONIUS of
EQUESTORS saved him the effort of getting references. Never one to advocate
diplomacy and restraint, I was pleased to see STREET WALKERS retaliate against FAUX
TIDES II in bloodfeud! Charity is unknown in LAPUR, and rightly so. ESCAPADE
exacted their revenge against X-MEN. Oh hard! that to strike a flame, the match
itself must needs be wasting!
Leave me now, you base fools! Keep those sands bloody and the buzzards fat!
Can anything compare to the pleasure of writing Spyreports for LAPUR? On that giddy
note I take my leave-- Novgorodny Vir

A. A. Shock -- You jolted me real bad! -- Platinum Peener

Hulik -- You showed who was the better. You did, indeed. Perhaps on my
challenge...? -- Chrome Crimper

Daisy Chains -- I just love messing around like that! That is what we golems do for
fun! -- Copper Compacter

Turtle -- You showed them, Big Guy. Champion! Duelmaster! Lord Protector! A
salute from The Metal Mincers. -- Ora and Oremaster

Aye! He done good! -- Oremaster

Jorja -- (mind I stick my rather prominent proboscis in) "Just" gold glitter, J? I
heard it was the gold glitter that has the silllver outline traceriesss...practical
guaranteed, they say. Oh ya, I'll work on my legibility.

All -- Turtle PS, 11-13-12-15-15-7-11 EP VL/MD. Just a really...tough...fighter. --

Lime -- OOOOoooo-Weeeee. You're a real live wire Sour. I guess I do have a thing or
three to learn about notching the belt. -- Hootchy Cootcher

Basaido -- Thanks for showing me the great egress with style. Not naming names mind
you, but some managers put big store in 10th fights. -- Bonzo

Geeez! A fella takes a small, 391 turn, break and what do I find on upon my return??
TP Scum...grrrr.

Death Trap -- Honestly...that was not me, really it wasn't!! The Lapurian curse
strikes again, because I lack ability (or skill for that matter) to kill another
warrior. You know it's a curse when you went desperate on the first hit and the
arenamaster lets me slice and dice for nine more hits and doesn't try to stop the
fight. -- Tina Colada

Copper Compacter -- It was an odd number turn, I always lose on odd numbered turns...
maybe I should start skipping them? -- Daisy Chains
P.S. If you're going to take advantage of my little "can't win 2 fights in a row"
problem, you could AT LEAST teach a little better.

Ragnar -- Well that took me by surprise. I guess I can't complain to much since it
was my challenge, and not very many people listen to what the dead have to say
anyway. -- Ghost of Sexy Celia

Et Tu Fhrain? -- Mad Dog Montana

Dark Uncle -- Yes, I was hiding, I admit it. After all, some uncles have a bad
reputation, and you're a Dark Uncle. Ooohhh, scares me just thinking about what
could have happened. -- Dang It Debbie

Gavin -- Nice spotlight. I still say that the Brickhouse would have fought anyone
but the Arenamaster, she had a decent shot of making it out alive. I'm just so
pleased to see everyone just as happy as me to get her invite. -- Roadkill

Welcome back X-Men, another old timer returning to the sands. -- Roadkill and the
Street Walkers

Congrat to Turtle on gaining the throne, and the invite on the same turn, well done.
-- Roadkill

Glauco -- Well, I hope rotting flesh and rigor mortis aren't listed an you turns-ons,
or I'm wishing I was more than six feet under. -- Ghost of Sexy Celia

Ora -- Brickhouse was always a supporter of free speech, also as the words stayed
under five letters. -- Roadkill

Arenamaster Kyall -- You do know I'm immortal, right? And while I'm retired with a
nice little pension, you still have to go do you little song and dance in every
little rat-hole the commission tells you to. So while I'm playing with the REAL men,
if I choose to do so, you're still scratching out a meager living in every flea
infested dog town you can find a taker. By rights YOU should be paying just to fight
in an arena as good as Lapur. Feel free to drop by AD sometime, I have no problem
slapping you around like a red-headed stepchild. -- Hugs & Kisses, Lady Protector
P.S. Have a nice day. ;)

All -- Sorry, catching up on the Mid Earth Guild weekly quotes again.

Basaido -- I would consider that an unfair match up. -- Aronwe

Weipa -- You look very menacing with that weapon. -- Urat

Celadus -- For such a small fellow you sure are a tough one. -- Hulik

Blood Knights -- My sincerest condolences on the death of Valonos. Avenging my
fallen guild mate with a victory was my intention. Once again I lost my head in the
middle of battle, perhaps I need to work on my anger management. -- Fhrain

Solar Eruption -- Thanks for giving me one last chance at Brickhouse and becoming
Duelmaster. -- Aronwe

Amie -- You have improved, miss, but so have I. -- Urat

Weipa -- Sorry, Urat gave me an excellent scouting report on you. -- Hulik

Bonzo -- Think again, keep practicing. -- Fhrain

Gavin Rule -- Nice spots. -- Visionist

Brickhouse -- Congrats on your long awaited induction. -- All of the Mid Earth Guild

Brickhouse -- Phhhht, you know I am not included in that. I know you are a coward,
witch. You just proved that by challenging the Dark Arena rather than fighting me
for your final fight. -- Aronwe

Enyalius -- Sorry for taking my frustration out on you. I am honored to have you in
my graduating class. -- Aronwe

Urd -- Well fought and congrats on your induction. -- Urat

Kyra -- Try and kill me will ya! -- Hulik

Talym -- Nice try avenging your fallen guild mate. -- Fhrain

All -- A first for the Mid Earth Guild, two members graduate on the same turn.
Aronwe and Urat will be retiring, here are their particulars. Aronwe 9(+1)-9-9-
17(+1)-17(+1)-10-17(+1) Slasher, Scimitar, High/Low, Parry skills, learned 72 skills
and raise 4 s.

Kyra -- The only thing offensive about Brickhouse is her caked on makeup and
overpowering perfume. -- Aronwe

Congrats too Enyalius, Urd and Turtle on your invites. -- All of the Mid Earth Guild

Chrome Crimper -- Hope I didn't crimp your style. -- Hulik

Mad Dog Montana -- Looks like my anger management sessions are helping a little. I
am glad you survived. -- Fhrain

Street Walkers -- First Brickhouse, now Celia, oi! I only meant a little poke. I
hope I didn't catch anything from that. Well, at least we have plenty of ale left
over from the "funeral" party. G'luck on the bloodfeud. -- Ragnar
P.S. Spooky how personal ads can come back and bite ye. Yer Desperate strategy was

Cardow Hunters -- You know how some fighters are: They surprise you and despite
everything against them, they make it through shining. Well, I don't suppose it'll
last forever, but Ragnar insists on pressing for Duelmaster without hesitating. Up
here it gets rough.... -- Gavin

Ora -- Aye. If'n enough people show interest (especially friends and Lapurians), I'm
in. Faux Tides has a bit more experience, but I admit that Faux Tides II has much
more promise. Post for Turf Wars! -- Faux Tides II, Gavin

2008 -- It's too bad yer mate Death Trap got Trap in Death. Funny 'ow names can come
back an' bite ya. Ah was hoping to face him again in tha future...showed promise. --
Mad Jack

Jorja -- This Gold Glitter gel pen better work! -- Gavin

Sporkis -- I hope whatever trials you are going through are not serious and that all
is well. We've missed you being present full time. Drop a line when you're able.
Hopefully your situation isn't contagious. (struggling to prepare for the mail-in).
I'll eat a mustard sandwich in your memory...that's a poor man's lunch for you
sophisticated folks. :) -- Gavin

Cloud Shadow -- Despite your extremely lucky ending blow, I must bow to a fight hard
won. -- Galen

June -- I wandered in here for a few crumbs and you Bash me! This is an outrage.
Know as soon as I can leave the hospital I'm filing a complaint! Oh dear...how will
I ever pay these medical bills?!... -- Persistant Beggar
P.S. This isn't the first time. And you wonder why I am a beggar, and persistant at

Talym -- Kinda weird, a Blood Knight being a golem. Do golems have blood? I've
heard that some are made out of, oh, bits of metal or wood or something, and I don't
see how they could have blood. How is it with you? -- Red Bull the idly curious

Galen Eldacar -- (wincing) I didn't mean to do that, well, not that hard, anyway.
I'm still getting the hang of this. -- Cloudshadow

Dax -- That was so embarrassing! And unfair, too. After all, you didn't hit me
once, and yet you won! It's enough to make a man turn to Mytori. -- Horn Rock
P.S. Well, okay, it's almost enough. I wouldn't actually do that, because Uncle
Wolf would kill me for sure if I did.

Athena -- I hope your feet blister. -- Firewalker

Black Torch -- The moon was pretty close to full when we fought, so what did you
expect? I really am a... Mad Dog

Bonzo -- If you're related to Boffo, for sure you aren't normal. -- Cloudshadow

Congratulations to Turtle -- Jorja and the Cardow Hunters

TURTLE (29-4974) ESCAPADE (417)

The summer tourney brought a lot of people to the Isle who didn't appear there
normally. This included Commission employees. Half a dozen arenamasters regarded
each other warily in the mirror behind the bar at the Pig in a Haystack. The Pig was
obscure and mediocre, drawing few gladiators, which is what they had all been looking
for. They saw gladiators every day. Most arenamaster were convinced that this was
some kind of punishment.
You could always pick out the arenamasters in a crowd. There were superficial
differences: One of these had clearly Adantri features, one wore an eye-patch, two
were female. But there were, in significant ways, alike. The same size, the same
hair-trigger alertness, the same deadliness.
The one-eyed man broke the ice, raising his beer mug in salute. "I'm Zrof One-
Eye from Zukal. Sugar of Arvat--" One of the women bowed slightly. "I know Sugar.
The rest of you...?"
The Adantri matched his salute. "Dernal of Dayla Kiv."
     "Daiyla Kiv? Ah...."
"No, without the 'I' in it. These damned bureaucrats can't spell, and they
thought adding an unnecessary vowel was exotic." Disgust dripped from his voice.
"Tell me about it!" another man growled in agreement. "Khagal of Niatoli, and
what they do to the spelling of THAT simple word--!"
"I thought Daiyla, I mean Dayla Kiv had a different name right now,"
Arenamistress Sugar said. "The arena, at least, because of a contest?"
"Chavez Ravine." Dernal's tone was the one that substituted in polite company
for spitting on the floor.
Zrof blinked, taken aback by the bitterness. He wouldn't have minded a contest
in Zukal, and damn what they called the place. "It's only temporary, though."
"Temporary, shmiperary," another man muttered. He seemed well into his drinking,
although, like all arenamasters, he carried his liquor well. "They do it all the time
in Aradi. No reshpect. Go around changing thish, changing that. I wish I could
change shome thingsh." He signalled the bartender for a refill.
The second woman put her hand over his mug. "You've had enough, Harkon. Try the
coffee, instead."
"You should be mad, too, Ripplesh," Harkon said. "They're going to do shtuff
like that in Jahnsh, aren't they?"
Ripples Dorrigan shrugged. All the men paused, some with glasses half raised, to
watch. "It's the way things are," she said. "Not much we can do about it."
"You know," Khagal of Niatoli said, "maybe we could make a few changes. Fix the
spelling of Arena 33, for one, change a few standby titles--"
"The Commission hates changes." Dernal of Dayla Kiv topped up his glass and
drained it gloomily.
"Yes, but if we disguise it," Sugar of Arvat said, excited, "make it... maybe a
general Name-Change-O-Rama! Then we could slip OUR changes through and no one would
notice or mind."

By popular demand, we are holding a Name-Change-o-Rama during the month of
September, 2008. If you wish to change the name of your warriors or teams, please
contact RSI Customer Service. The charge for a name change is $1.
