I'd have juggled five, maybe six, daggers at a time and breathed fire or pulled rabbits out of my helm. But I'm not. I'm merely a part-time fighter and manipulator of other peoples' talent--a gladiatorial manager. "What's with NS," she asked. "I don't know," I said. "Someone hit back I suppose." Confused, she continued, "He challenged up--way up. What did he expect?" I don't know. I can't even explain MY actions most of the time. How could I explain his? "He won, though. How'd you do?" GM smiled and her eyes widened. "I lost, but you should have seen it. Horn Rock was amazing! I've never seen anyone like him." "What's he doing down in the Challenger Initiates?" "Beats me," she responded. "Hey, how did your fight go? I saw that your challenge went through." "I haven't fought yet. I go after RHC." Three seconds later, RHC walked through the door. Crap! "Hey, they're waitin' for you, chief," RHC said. "You better hurry!" I don't have time to blink. Paperwork can wait I guess. I cursed under my breath as I mumbled, "I got to go!" What a ridiculous thing to say. Of course I had to go. I flew through the door and ran adroitly down the hill to the arena. What's that awful smell?? Ah, Streetwalkers. "Oh, hi Daisy," I whispered, as I held my breath and scampered past her while she was doing what appeared to be some kind of victory dance--or primitive mating ritual amongst early cretaceous period primates--I couldn't tell. As I neared the bottom and began to walk into the arena, I heard a rumbling behind me. I glanced up and saw a barrel of ale on its side rolling uncontrollably towards the arena. Two clumsy, or possibly drunk, warriors were chasing after it. "Ye lost it ye pansy," one of them yelled. The other tried to punch the first, but missed and tripped. Or maybe he fell. Both warriors started laughing and completely forgot about the runaway keg. "Ah feel dummer 'avin such a simple-minded, troll-breath'd, good-for-nothing brudder like youz," the first warrior said. "Youz disgust me!" Oh yes, Gavin's boys. The last time I saw them they were using their steel caps as goblets and drinking--heavily. Trying to focus, I entered the arena amidst the smell of vomit and ale (now all over the arena outer walls) mixed with sweat, blood, and a disgusting variety of body odor. I looked around for more Street Walkers. "There he is," yelled the Arenamaster. "You're late!" No kidding. "It's a good thing you pointed it out otherwise I might not have known," I muttered. "Begin," he said. As I looked around for an opponent, I felt someone box my left ear. "Ouch! What the...." Illyria was swinging her sword in random directions as if she were swatting flies. Puzzled, I looked closely and noticed that her helm was much too large for her Orcish head and had slipped over her eyes. This is going to be easy! I reached for my scimitar and advanced. I lunged forward from a low guard, slicing wickedly upwards at my foe--and missed! As Illyria continued her spastic fit, a bead of sweat from her hairy armpit flew directly into my eye. I crumpled to my knees! Excruciating pain reverberated through my head. I motioned to the Arenamaster that I could not continue. Merde! I crawled to the arena wall and used it to pull myself upright. I wiped the sweat from my eyes and noticed Illyria was still flailing away. Apparently no one told her that the fight was over. I walked towards the exit and saw Spartacus explaining to his team why Ausonious needed to prove himself; something about a wet noodle. "I don't mean to interrupt, but those things are dangerous and they DO cause massive damage," I said. "Don't be too hard on Ausonious." Spartacus looked confused and Crescens looked angry. I continued, "I used one once--a wet noodle. Didn't have the deftness for it. I whacked myself a couple times and almost lost a leg." I probably shouldn't be here. Especially since I sent RHC after Crescens a few turns ago. I waved goodbye and quickly walked through the exit. This life is hard. I should have been a street-performer. * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * There was an unease in the Faux Tides stables. Not a quiet unsettling type. Gavin could hardly sleep at nights while Ragnar and Jack partied or had their evening row. The unease was more of a tension in the air; a continual buzz in the background. Gavin had seen Galen coming slowly out of his shell until Dalton had perished. The effect had been devastating on him. Not having avenged his grandfather hadn't helped, either. Gavin and Galen had nearly come to blows... (a fight Gavin would have surely lost). He had chosen to send Ragnar instead. He had thought it more important to secure a win and set an image for the team. Galen's mood had improved only in honoring his fellow duelers. It was a half- hearted attempt, but still Galen stayed to himself after fights. Gavin gave a sign and knocked softly at Galen's door. "Come," a soft voice called. Gavin eased open the door and slipped into the sparsely furnished, yet immaculate room where Galen laid on his bed with his arms behind his head. "How's it going?" Gavin asked, hopping up to sit on the small dresser. "Fine." "You won your last fight," Gavin tried. "Yep." "You've been training pretty hard. Guess it paid off." Galen signed and locked his dark eyes on Gavin. The cold look was like a silent threat that made goosebumps rise on his arms. Gavin hopped to his feet with his fists clenched at his sides. "What's your problem, Galen? Stop that." Galen smiled slightly but it had a touch of cruelty. "No problem." "You're skulking around, barely anything to say... I thought we were friends," Gavin finished slightly more softly. "I thought so too, until you let Rag--" "You're still mad about that?!" Gavin interrupted. "You know exactly why I did what I did. Get over it, ok?" Galen unfolded and got to his feet, inches from Gavin. He spoke in a low, dangerous voice, akin to a growl. "Get out, Gavin." Gavin's heart beat swiftly as the tingle of fear trickled through his veins. With a force of will, he stood his ground. "It's my room, Galen. It's my team and you are my fighter...even if you will not be my friend. If you can't get ahold of yourself, I CAN arrange a night match." Galen narrowed his eyes in a question. "You wouldn't...you can't--I've just won!" "Don't try me, Galen." And with that, Gavin left the room and slammed the door. He thought he had seen a touch of fear in Galen's eyes, just past the rage. Gavin went to his room, shutting the door, and collapsed against the wall, breathing hard. Then sobs wracked his body and he fell slowly to his knees. "I'm sorry, Galen," he whispered. "I didn't mean it." -- Faux Tides II + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ Edge of Night #21 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ + Malcorn: The Lord Protector Whisperstep burst in the Tavern of the Black Axe and stopped short. His Greenwarden teammates had told him to make his report here, and he had expected... other Greenwardens, and maybe a representative of Lord Malcorn. Well, there was one other Greenwarden present, Patterson Pine. And Lord Malcorn *himself* was sitting there just like an ordinary person, with a mug of ale in one hand. But also a couple of gladiators he didn't recognize, one of them Rirorni, and an older Rirorni wearing shaman's gear, and a... lizardy sort of... person. And... he swallowed twice, someone or something who looked darkly elvish but had such an aura of danger that Whisperstep almost turned around on the spot and left. Patterson Pine had seen his teammate enter and waved him over. "Sit," he said. The Rirorni shaman fixed him with an imperative stare. "You are the one who stayed with the carcass of the bear," he said. "What did you see?" Whisperstep sank into a chair and accepted the tankard handed to him. "A ghost," he said. "It was bound to the bones of the bear. I burned the bones and the ghost went away. Was freed, I hope." The shaman and the elf exchanged grim nods. They'd been expecting this, Whisperstep could tell. And there was something more they weren't telling, probably something worse. Lord Malcorn set his mug down. "Tell me the rest of it," he said. He was normally so easy-going that it always came as a surprise when he spoke with that regal authority that was his by right. Whisperstep could feel himself sitting up straighter. Again the shaman and the--no, he was not an elf, whatever he was--the dark stranger exchanged glances. They didn't speak. One of the others, the older gladiator, sighed. "This whole business--the matter of the bear and other things we've seen since coming north--are just the edge of the problem. The first symptoms, you could say. The problem appears to have its root in Kurukar--" "Sunk deep into the soul of the Black Kaliv of Kurukar," the dark stranger said. "I am no worker of magic," the gladiator went on, "but I have studied many things, and it appears that the Kaliv of Kurukar has opened some kind of gate that would better have been left shut." "He has opened the Door that leads to the land of the soul-eaters," the dark stranger said. "As is their way, they are sure to have taken his soul first, making him their creature to do their will. Until that Door is closed again, no person living or dead may walk in safety." Lord Malcorn nodded. He was often called the Black Lord or Blackie, which Whisperstep had figured was because of his black hair and swarthy skin. Now he saw that there was another reason for the nickname. "The Door must be closed," he agreed, his voice as hard and dark as wrought iron. "There are certain arrangements I must make; they will take much of the night. We will leave in the morning." The shaman looked surprised. "We do not expect you to come with us, Lord Malcorn," he said. "Surely you are needed here in your own lands?" "Surely he is," the dark stranger said, "any lord worthy of the name is needed in the lands he guards. But even more surely do we need him with us, Wolf." "There are certain responsibilities laid on my lineage," Malcorn said. "You may be able to close the Door, but only I can seal it." * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===FREE BLADES REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 9 ZUKAL (turn 601): MORAVIA MAUVE of BLUE MOON (Jorja, mgr.) Ain't that Awl right!? Who'd a thunk it? The Aluminum Awl, Duelmaster of Lapur. Awl right! I haveta admit it will be tough to stay here. Awl you guys want this spot, and yer probly figurin out who gets me next. Well, I got news fer ya awl; I ain't gonna sit here 'n be easy. No way. Yer gonna have ta fight fer it, and y'awl jest might haveta die fer yer shot. So there! I like ole Lapur. Lotsa talkin'. Lotsa people ta fight. Good managers awl over the place! Yowsir! Gotta love it! Y'awl come'n see me now, y'hear? Aluminum Awl, Duelmaster SPY REPORT Good day, in LAPUR a quiet thief gets rich, but a quiet spymaster gets poor. So bring me ale and harken to my tidbits of news. It seems the training can make the difference, as BOHICA is pushed out of top team by WILL DUEL 4 MEAD, who came from 7th with a 4-1-1 this turn. Now keep the taverns open late tonight, for there are sorrows to drown for VENUSIANS, whose 2-3-0 this turn dropped them by 6 into 11th. METAL MINCERS stable has parlayed this turn's 3-1-0 into a 7 space move up the rankings. This brings them up to 3rd place. Good work, guys! The WILL DUEL 4 MEAD guild has had a 4-1-1 turn and deserves to be watched in the future. You never know where this kind of thing can lead. And let's see, MAD JACK fought TINA COLADA and gained 21 points and contributed to FAUX TIDES II's 3-2-1. A.A. SHOCK has lost to HOOTCHY COOCHER, falling 17 points, while helping make FORCE OF NATURE a 2-2-0 turn. Defending his title for another turn, ALUMINUM AWL kept MID EARTH's warrior, FHRAIN, from claiming the throne. Can someone confirm a rumor for me? I hear the top team makes their losing fighters do dishes at The Burning Tree until they win. Maybe? Oriental wise man once say, 'Hiding behind shields prevents proper sun tanning.' Inscrutable, but true. WILL DUEL 4 MEAD has cause to stand tall, as they were LAPUR's most avoided team. A smart manager knows this is a team to beat. And avoiding WILL DUEL 4 MEAD more than any other team we find BOHICA. LAPUR, are we going to accept, or respect this sort of thing? The most challenged warrior this turn was CARDOW HUNTERS' warrior HORN ROCK. More fighters challenged him than challenged the Duelmaster! In a brave attempt, MAKADOS from PHILANTHROPISTS challenged up 25 points to fight RAGNAR from the FAUX TIDES II stable. MAKADOS perhaps got his just desserts, seeing as he subdued RAGNAR and ended up with 62 recognition points. A coward dies a thousand deaths, a brave man only once. Wise men know this to be true. CRESCENS has departed LAPUR, leaving EQUESTORS without their 4-6-0 warrior. Question, just what was his team doing at the taverns last night? I guess it was coming sooner or later, FORCE OF NATURE has lost BLACK TORCH, and LAPUR is bound to miss him. For a little while, at least. The manager of STREET WALKERS will not be pleased to learn that TINA COLADA, a 3-0-1 fighter, has been killed at the hands of FAUX TIDES II's MAD JACK. A brave warrior does not carry a red shield, he has nothing to cover or hide when the fight is over. Consider well. Thought for the day, a new sword shines bright, but the notched sword sings the sweetest. Well, I'm burning daylight here in LAPUR and I've a long road ahead of me. Happy Trails. You are my personal FAVORITE. And my job is to keep you away from Crimper. Is that so bad? But since you seem to be taking this rather personally, Ora has asked me to ease up on you. (sigh) -- Platinum Peener (a sad Mincer) Fhrain -- That felt mighty, mighty good. (Even though it was probably awl luck.) -- Aluminum Awl Makados -- No one can be perfect, now; can they? It was my pleasure to be your first. -- Inconel Indenter Mad Dog Montana -- What? Why weren't you previously occupied with Peener? That was unfair! -- Chrome Crimper All -- It is wonderful to see the many fights and the great personals in Lapur. A salute to you all. -- Ora and Oremaster Looky there! Me Awl made er to yer top. Champeen! Aye. -- Oremaster Cuddle Me Tender -- Not bad. No really, there was just a tad too much tender attention there, Cuddles. Look me up when I have 4 fights...which'll mean you will have 8 fights...adepts maybe. -- Spangle Ragnar -- AND you got the skills. Creep. But I mean that in a nice way. It's always good to make the acquaintance of a fellow killer. -- Bonzo Dax -- Big risk, big rewards...I get it, long as you don't try to make a patsy of me. -- Hootchy Cootcher Crescens -- Let's hope that helps in the long term sense. -- the Cap-Meister Death Mob -- Due to calendar mismanagement I submitted the turn sending Ausonius to the Dark Arena before receiving the turn where Alterius died thus denying you your chance for revenge. For this I apologize. -- Spartacus Talym -- My shortest contest. Be careful when you challenge. -- Liternius Amie -- Thanks for the jump in recognition and the learns. -- Celadus Atria -- Coming from Venus obviously contributes to your damage absorbing ability. Was surprised you lasted so long after my attacks started to land. My other opponents only took about half as many hits. -- Glauco Lapur -- For those of you have a gladiatrix on your team, you should read Juvenal's Satirae V1 246-264. He does not have very high opinion of female fighters. I am willing to send a copy if you would like to read it. -- Spartacus Lapur -- Vindocomus, my new gladiator, was a retiarius who was killed in the Coliseum. The graffito indicates as much. -- Spartacus Cloud Shadow -- Ah suppose gittin' tanked fer a match ain't a good idea...ah tripped on sum thin' then the three of you just kept on stickin'... -- Mad Jack Bonzo -- The Bonzo bomber eh? I had to give ye a shot and down in flames ye go. Hope ta keep it up. -- Ragnar Got Milk -- Well, I'm certainly glad I could teach you a few things. Perhaps that is my difficulty, I teach more than I ever gain. Well, a good soldier knows when he's whooped.... Besides if I hadn't given you the match I'm afraid my arm would be a stump by now. -- Galen Lime -- Well hell...I thought for sure that could have been my match. Always a pleasure facing Spakis and Company...we'll clash again I am sure. Well won...oh and ye think I might get you and Tina together? Maybe she has a sister named Tequila. -- Thornwild Hootchy Coocher -- So that's how it's done! -- Dax Ora -- Thank you for the vote of confidence and good wishes. Yet, fear not, Faux II will not be participating...their hands are full here. -- Gavin All -- Ye lily livered land slugs, ye can't keep a good swashbuckler down... Here I come. Arrr... -- Ragnar P.S. Daisy -- Whiffle bat me arse! Needs Salt -- I don't think that will help. -- Firewalker Yuri -- This mead works for you? Are there any special ingredients? -- Mad Dog Mad Jack -- Everyone needs a loss to give balance to their record. -- Cloudshadow, glad to be of help Got Milk -- This is good. Milk is good for you. -- Horn Rock Solar Eruption -- Wow, no kidding! -- Red Bull Platinum Peener -- Better get your eyes checked, bub. I'm no "gal." -- Mad Dog Roadkill -- I fear it was a fluke. -- Jorja, Cardow Hunters P.S. Especially today, because if the gladiators take their tone from me today, it will be pathetic. SUCH a headcold! All -- These got cut off last time. -- Visionist All -- A first for the Mid Earth Guild, two members graduate on the same turn. Aronwe and Urat will be retiring, here are their particulars. Aronwe 9(+1)-9-9- 17(+1)-17(+1)-10-17(+1) Slasher, Scimitar, High/Low, Parry skills, learned 72 skills and raise 4 stats in 6 tries. Urat is also the first Wall of Steel to graduate from the Mid Earth Guild. Amie -- Urat warned me you were improving. -- Hulik Solar Eruption -- Sometimes I even surprise myself. -- Fhrain Kyra -- You are starting to get on my nerves. -- Hulik Aluminum Awl -- Well fought sir, you showed your true metal. -- Fhrain November -- So close, but yet so far. -- Gilan Ninurta -- Okay, victory wasn't mine and you didn't die. My bad. -- Luhar Himeko -- Argghhh! You will pay for that. -- Nilith Mossman -- Congrats on your invite. -- All of the Mid Earth Guild 8 July 2008 ***************************************************** **********************ATTENTION********************** ***************************************************** ALLIANCES OF ALASTARI ***************************************************** **********************ATTENTION********************** ***************************************************** *TURF WAR VI RULES* Starting Nov 2008 (10 turns) Anyone may participate; known alliances, new alliances, or temporary alliances created solely to compete in the Turf War!
