It was impossible to see any tracks now, or any obstacle until they ran into it. So dark that only Necroma's training, and the ghosts that Young Joan and Cloudrider bore made it possible to follow their quarry at all. There was no time in the Spirit Lands, but still the duration of the chase stretched out farther and farther. Necroma remembered that one of her teachers had said that it was perilous to remain in the Spirit Lands for long, ah, durations, but she couldn't remember why. Young Joan said something, but she couldn't make out the words and glanced over her shoulder. Of course she couldn't see anything, but it was odd, Joan had sounded quite far behind. When had they become separated? Surely they'd been side by side just a little while ago? Well, they had their ghosts to guide them and would catch up soon enough. Something that in the living world might have been cold starlight was tempering the darkness, so that pieces of the landscape which had merely been black masses before now began to look like rocks and maybe trees. Necroma stared into it, willing more detail to emerge as they approached. There seemed to be a warmer light behind the nearer obstacles, and she thought the man with the cloak was moving toward it. The idea of getting warm had a great appeal. She hadn't realized how cold the Spirit Lands were. She began to put on more speed, after all, she could see better here, so why not? Voices called out behind her, but she barely heard them, they were nothing to do with her. They were far behind, anyway. She wove through the dark columns of great trees, felt the grass and brambles part for her. Her passage was so swift and easy, it was almost like flying. She could see the door ahead, a massive double door of some substance she couldn't identify, deeply carven all over but blurred with age or mist, and a warm light coming through it. Yes. This was the place she had been looking for. This was the place where she would find the answers she had sought all her life. She leaped over the doorsill, hands outstretched eagerly. ***** *** ***** *** ***** Young Joan and Cloudrider heard Necroma scream as the lights ahead winked out. "A trap!" Cloudrider gasped, trying to run faster in the darkness. He tripped immediately. Joan dragged him back to his feet. "A trap or some kind of obstacle," she agreed. "Our ghosts told us that we were coming to a dangerous place." "Right, and now Necroma's got into trouble in it. She's just a kid, almost. We have to help her!" "We won't do that by rushing around blindly," Joan said. "If we get trapped as well, who will rescue all of us?" "But--" "We must use our wits," Joan said. "Nothing less will serve us as well." Her voice might have been cast in iron. At times like this, Cloudrider found it easy to imagine her in another life as a general and a martyr. "You have the rope in your gear, I believe?" "Yes." Fifty feet of silk rope, no more than a quarter of an inch thick, but strong. He hadn't been able to figure out why she wanted it along, but she was in charge and he'd packed it as ordered. He didn't know what she planned to do with it now, either. He pulled the bundle out of his pack and handed it to her. "What is it for?" "Rope has many uses," she said. "This time, we're each going to tie an end to our belts so that we can separate without losing each other in the darkness." "Oh... okay. I guess that makes sense." He took one end and tied it. "Ah... you did notice before the lights went what looked like trees? Hard to get past them if we're on two ends of a rope." "We'll deal with that when it arises. If it arises. I have certain suspicions about those 'trees'. They may not be a problem." "Of course they'll be a problem! How could they not?" "This is the Spirit Lands, remember? The rules are different here. I think there's a reasonable chance that if you disbelieve those trees firmly, they may not be there. I thought they had the earmarks of illusion, myself." "Illusion? But-- Oh, I SEE. Yes, illusion would make more sense than actual trees, now that you mention it. Huh. Glad you thought of that, because it wouldn't have occurred to me." "So, we separate to the ends of the rope and move forward. Now. Slowly! There may be other tricks and traps ahead of us." Cloudrider could feel the rope twitch and uncoil as Young Joan moved to her right. He moved left, taking up more slack. He'd lost all sight and sound of his companion before they had the rope all paid out. It really was darker here than anywhere else he'd been in the Spirit Lands. So far. Unless it was an illusion, too? Hmm, if he denied the darkness, maybe... no. That wouldn't work. The darkness made it possible to deny the trees with conviction, but impossible to deny the lack of life. A trade-off. In his mind, the ghost of Nightwind spoke, telling him that the darkness was real "in the ways that matter to you." Whatever that meant. He sighed and began moving forward, feeling blindly for each step. ***** *** ***** *** ***** Necroma stopped before she could run into a tree or a wall. The sudden darkness where she had seen warm firelight was disorienting. Confusing, too, because you couldn't blow out a fire the way you did a candle. Someone laughed. No, some >thing< laughed, that sound had never come from a human throat. She clenched her teeth on a curse, realizing that she had run headlong into a trap. But her manager in Lin Tirian, Houdini, had told her that a trap was not a disaster but a challenge. Right. She was a gladiator, a lady protector, she could do challenges. And she was a trained (if inexperienced) adept of the necromantic art. She took a careful breath, calming her racing heartbeat, clearing the panic from her mind. She still couldn't see anything with the eyes of her body, but now that she was paying attention, she could perceive the presence of bodiless souls. Spirits of the dead, no doubt, there were very few circumstances that could produce the bodiless soul of the living, after all. She could speak to those souls, it was the core of necromancy. She summoned the formulas from her memory, the words, and even more important the tones and the rhythms, that would persuade the dead to speak to her. Started framing her questions, because a properly designed question was crucial to getting the kind of information she needed. She had heard too many tales of opportunities lost forever due to carelessness at this point. "I greet those who have died and are near me," she said. "I ask that you tell me what you can of the situation in which I find myself--" Soundless voices clammored around her. =we are bound to answer no questions= *bound only to answer no one who querries us from the world of flesh this one is here among us the situation is different surely we can answer her* >surely surely...< =she is trapped as we are and can be of no help= >no help no help they have said it no help< *they dont know everything and this is a chance unlooked for let us take it* "What help I can give, I will. That is why I am here," Necroma said. *one said he would need a place to stand if he would move the world and there is no place to stand no standing at all in limbo* A place to stand? She visualized the sacred grove north of Lin Tirian where she had first spoken to the dead. Red-brown pillars of great pines around the clearing, slim white columns of the birches that formed a circle in that clearing, moss and fallen leaves underfoot. Smelled the pines and the damp earth as a wind sighed through the trees. The spirits around her stirred. =this is power they will notice and come to torment us= *this is power she can help us* >they will come they will come< "How can I help you?" And how can you help me, but one thing at a time.... *defend yourself for they come* * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===FREE BLADES REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 9 ZUKAL (turn 603): MORAVIA MAUVE of BLUE MOON (Jorja, mgr.) Happy retirement! (Presuming awl pensions hold in this market crash.) Ora said I could tell you awl about me. Here I am: 5-9-12-17-18(+1)-11-13 mode slasher I presume the SH is a fave as it is awl I ever used or could use (e.g. 10-31-2 recent) 14-8-1 no tournaments (awl arena) masters in init and attack plus expert decise (plus what I just learned) Oremaster or Ora will post my faves, when the formal commission notifications awl arrive. I think I did far better than could have been expected--63% wins, outta here in only 22, 3 DM crowns--awl the way to the golem bank! Sayanora Aluminum Awl SPY REPORT Greetings, warriors of LAPUR! Once again I've been called out of retirement for my abilities and insights into Spyreporting. Phhbltt! Too much drinking and too little dodging gave STREET WALKERS a 1-4-0! I got a good laugh out of it! Up 'n down. Up 'n down. Rankings always change. Up 'n down. I think I'm gonna be... Well, MID EARTH's 4th moved them up to 5-0-0 place. It seems so recently people were saying METAL MINCERS was washed up, finished. But 3-0-0 moved them up 2. I guess they're washed no more... What's with RED HOT CHILI? She actually beat WILL DUEL 4 MEAD's LUNA, and walked away with 20 more points from the fight. Laughs were big at BOHICA while they watched RED HOT CHILI clobber LUNA. She lost 17 points and got bruised from objects thrown from the stands. Har har har! Did ALUMINUM AWL wimp out, or just get lazy? Anyway, he's not Duelmaster anymore. I can barely restrain my enthusiam for METAL MINCERS' outstanding member, Duelmaster CHROME CRIMPER. Advice to fighters with a 1 will--give up fighting! Speaking of cowardly avoiders and unfair challenges... LAPUR thinks WILL DUEL 4 MEAD and their 143-102-18 is too much! If at first you don't succeed, give up... Management must be dealin', as the boys at MID EARTH ain't reelin'! WILL DUEL 4 MEAD's mad! What do people see in MAKADOS? His 7-3-0? PHILANTHROPISTS ain't talkin', but he's got 50 points. HIMEKO of WILL DUEL 4 MEAD knows how to pick 'em. She challenged ILLYRIA of VENUSIANS who is up by 24. Now was this a wise move? HIMEKO perhaps got hers just desserts, seeing as she subdued ILLYRIA and ended up with 23 recognition points. A fighter's lot is filled with strife, revenge, and killing. Some fighters don't accept this. The best do. MAD JACK larned his lesson (DAISY CHAINS taught it well), and we right likely won't be seein' 'im fight any STREET WALKERS members with the same gusto. Here's some advice: study your opponent, master many skills, fight dirty. Who knows what the future holds for a warrior. More fights, there's no doubt. All work and no play makes Olaf a dull fighter. Work and play no fighter dull Olaf. Olaffighterwork and no play. Salute. -- Ora Good luck to all in The Mailer. -- Ora and what's-his-face The final, and official info/faves for Aluminum Awl were: VH/VL, Broadsword, Initiative fave -- The Mincer Publicity Office Rook -- You call that a style? *ahem* I mean...I like your style, the cut of your jib. -- Crabby Abbie Norman -- It looks like that might be it for Lapur's mighty-mite basher. (me, down here) I think the manager's looking for a little more hitting intensity than my size 4 frame can deliver. I can work a kneecap over something fierce though. -- Missy Capper Solar Eruption -- If there were ropes in the arena I'd've had you on them. Then you slithered away, you eel. Another fishing tale brought to you by... -- Hootchy Cootcher P.S. Go gettum, yer first runnerup. Red Bull -- Now that was special. Affinity between man and machine...weapon. -- Bonzo Forge Deathwind -- A victory. Multiplied ten-fold and maybe King-for-a-day will start doling out with the respect. -- Spangle Sporkis -- You've got the style-master in the Parry Striker style. More power to you. I'm not currently running any Pikers, but I've sure had a lot of fun with them over the years. -- Scion Milk -- Despite my strategy and preparedness, I seemed to stand there and let you strike me with no defense. I guess I have a lot of things going through my head. Personally, though, I don't see it as a "cheap" lesson. -- Galen Eldacar Scion -- Aye mate! Pass me the Sea Salt and fly specs. Then get me a bucket of prop wash for the plains <S>! -- Ragnar Sporkis -- Why me? I want to move up the ladder but I'd have to fight your crew... sigh. Alright then, come get some! -- Gavin P.S. Thanks for the diplo, I'll be good...I promise. Road Kill -- I guess my boys are a bit rough with your women. Perhaps you'd like to consider working for us. 40-60%? I'll be off and on due to penny pinching for the tourney. I'll try to remain available for a BF. Good luck! -- Gavin P.S. *Someone* might have mentioned you're a fountain of useless knowledge, especially concerning offensive TPs. This rude person obviously couldn't have known a Lapurian veteran such as you... <G> Anyway, expect a diplo. :) Lucy -- They say that chewing on reptile hide is good for sharpening the teeth, but I'm not going for that. Seems to me it'd be more likely to blunt 'em. Still, a win is always a good thing, so I'm okay with this. -- Mad Dog P.S. Feel free to lose to me some more. Bonzo -- I can't stand clowns, they're even worse than mimes for driving me into a frenzy. Unfortunately, a frenzy isn't the best state of mind in the arena.... -- Red Bull A.A. Shock -- Still, better an A.A. shock than a New Madrid. That one was an unpleasant surprise. -- Horn Rock Glauco -- Why doesn't this surprise me? Ouch. -- Cloudshadow Yuri -- Well, that was the pits. -- Ghost of Firewalker P.S. Jorja says it was "fated" because I was deficient in Ego. What does she know? Milk -- Wash your mouth out with soap! I have never bagged sand in my life. What you see is totally what you get with us Cardow Hunters. -- Horn Rock Cuddle Me Tender -- (tongue-lolling grin) -- Mad Dog Our congratulations to Aluminum Awl. -- Jorja and the Cardow Hunters Aluminum Awl -- Everytime I meet you it turns into an awfull day. Congrats on your invite. -- Fhrain the Humbled Crabby Abbie -- PMS'ing my dear? -- Nilith Norman -- Wimpy Dwarf!?! If I were you I would have someone's head for that comment. -- Luhar Vindocomus -- I was robbed. -- Gilan Aluminum Awl -- A golem borg seems to make an awesome combination. -- Hulik Platinum Peener -- Watch your back, someone may try and melt you down. -- Fhrain Star Fire -- Well fought, even though that was a lucky shot. -- Nilith Dang it Debbie -- Double dang it! -- Luhar Bluiddvl -- Nice try. -- Gilan Oremaster -- Wastes are not one of my favorite styles, so we have only made a handful here in Lapur. -- Visionist 8 October 2008 Hail Alastarians! Allow me to introduce myself. I am Vanek, manager of the Warmasters in the No- Tourney arena of Shadowspire. I come to you with a public service announcement. Some of you may already be aware of Shadowspire and some of you may not realize what exactly you're missing. This isn't your average arena. This is Shadowspire, a large and very active arena where role-playing is encouraged; many managers are active both the personal ads and the D2 forums online, and excitement reigns with many grudge matches from turn to turn. If you haven't checked arena 81 out, I urge you to do so. After returning to the game almost 2 years ago, after a 15+ year hiatus, I was looking to try and recapture the magic of the game I remembered from my youth. After finding my first two arenas lacking, I almost quit the game again. That was until I found the newly opening Shadowspire. It was here that I found the magic and excitement that I remembered. I truly love this arena and am sure you will too if given a chance. Rookie or experienced veteran, it matters not. Both have come together here to successfully make an arena with plenty of competition to challenge the vets, yet with the no tourney format, friendly enough for the novices to get their feet wet and learn (or relearn) the game. When I say that even novices can find success here, I speak from personal experience. I still consider myself a "newbie" to the game but have found plenty of success with my first two Duelmaster titles and two ADM graduates to date. I encourage you all to check out the D2 forums at www.reality.com/duel2/ and look over both the Shadowspire newsletter and DM-81 forum section at the bottom of the page. The forum banter and personal ads help to clearly show that the "old school" feel for the game is still alive and well here in Shadowspire. Also, if you're a former Shadowspire manager who is currently away, I encourage you to return and help continue to make this one of the most entertaining arenas in the game today! I hope to see many new faces in the near future and am excited to see the return of some of the old faces whom have been away! Sincerely, Vanek 8 October 2008 After 17 long years they are finally cutting the Cowboy loose. Red & stinging, my hand is now sufficiently slapped. The state of Texas' boot print is stamped across my ***... Uncle Damnit! I am only 34 (think about it...) so plenty of time to reinvent myself...prospects are great. After wading through the culture shock I hope to be amongst you soon, dishing out paper "w"itch slaps and taking my share of them from you. See you @ the Winter face '09? Only time will tell. Good luck. -- CFH/Rat Salad, 5 Below Zero and an assortment of other underachieving thugs. P.S. Contact info coming soon for those who want it; email and all that other fun sh...stuff. *grin* Sorry Ed. 8 July 2008 ***************************************************** **********************ATTENTION********************** ***************************************************** ALLIANCES OF ALASTARI ***************************************************** **********************ATTENTION********************** ***************************************************** *TURF WAR VI RULES* Starting Nov 2008 (10 turns) Anyone may participate; known alliances, new alliances, or temporary alliances created solely to compete in the Turf War!
