Agro watched the others leave, Uncle Wolf, Lord Malcorn, the gladiator Math, and
the Dark Stranger from the Silent Place. No doubt his own party, himself, Redfox,
and Blackwind, was going into as much danger--and more quickly--but at least they
didn't have the Stranger looking over their shoulders and lusting for their blood.
Because he was sure that however constrained by agreements and conventions, that
predatory Stranger DID lust for the blood of mortals. Well, warm-blooded mortals,
anyway. And he wasn't going to trust in his own cold-blooded nature to save him, if
it came to a tight spot.
The Croc shrugged and went back inside to the fire; his group would not be
leaving until sunset, and he wanted to enjoy the warmth while he could. Time enough
to be cold and on edge tonight, and for all they were warmbloods, he believed
Blackwind and Redfox to be true companions who would not abandon either him or each
other when things got desperate.
Blackwind was pacing while a Greenwarden, Whisperstep, explained how to find the
sacrificial rock. Sometimes he started to rub his shoulder and then stopped himself.
Agro resisted an urge to rub his own shoulder. Each of the three of them now
bore a tattoo on the shoulder, the outward mark of the binding that the shaman Wolf
had made to link them all. The old human had said that it "might have other uses
than just the link," but he hadn't told them what those uses might be; he seemed not
to know. Agro hadn't realized that there were any kinds of magic that could be like
that, do things without the practitioner knowing what was going on. Were all kinds
of magic like that sometimes? It was not a comforting thought. He turned to see
what Redfox was doing, ask if there was something he himself should be doing.
The Rirorni was filling backpacks. Food, tools, a change of clothes, first aid
supplies. "You look like you're getting ready for an ordinary trip," he said. "Do
you think we'll actually need any of that stuff?"
Redfox shrugged. "We might, and it would be a bitter joke if we came to grief
over not having brought something as obvious as a canteen or a coil of light rope."
The Croc nodded. "You have a point. But won't our quarry think it odd to see
the bait carrying a pack?"
"Not if I carry it to the site and then drop it. I'd bet it wouldn't be the
first time the bait had done pack duty until it was time to die. And besides, if we
set things up right, our quarry shouldn't be taking the time to think about details.
It should be too eager for my blood. And whatever else it might take from a
sacrifice."
"That doesn't bother you?"
"It bothers me. But if this is what needs doing, I'll do it. And I've died
more than once already, fighting on the Isle. I feel like I'm living on chimerical
time anyway, because of that." He shrugged and picked up a leather pouch that, by
its scent, must hold some kind of strong herbs. "I would prefer to go on living, and
I'll do everything I can to go on living, but death is always waiting for a warrior,
and even more for a gladiator. We all of us accepted that when we entered the
arena." After a moment, he added, "Do you remember that village in the forest north
of Riztab, where everyone had been turned into a zombie? I don't want that to happen
again, if anything I can do will help prevent it."
The waiting had been the hardest part. All the slow hours of the short winter
day, with nothing to do but pace and fret. Agro paced, the humans fretted. Well,
they paced, also, Blackwind more than Redfox. Apparently the older gladiator, having
made up his mind what part he would play in their risky trap, had been able to put
the whole thing out of his mind. The Rirorni actually slept!
But the sun had set, finally, and the three gladiators had slipped out the back
of the Greenwardens's guildhouse. Whisperstep accompanied them to set them on the
right path, and a good thing. The woods were crisscrossed with paths broad and
narrow, well-trodden or seldom used. Picking out the right one would have been
difficult. But as they got deeper into the woods, the paths got fewer and the signs
of intelligent activities such as the cutting of firewood became less. And the
spaces between the trees got darker.
The Greenwarden stopped where the path they were on forked. "This is as far as
I go," he said. "That way will take you to Blood Rock; it should be half an hour or
so farther."
Blackwind looked at the trail they were to follow. "It's seen a fair amount of
traffic lately, hasn't it?"
Whisperstep shrugged, his expression unreadable in the gloom. "These are
unsettled times. People are afraid. When they're afraid they sometimes turn to the
old ways of averting misfortune." After a moment he added, "I think they mostly
sacrifice... goats."
"If you say so. But at least whatever is out there won't be surprised when we--
" He stopped. Maybe he couldn't go on and say that they were going to offer a human
sacrifice to some kind of hunting creature.
"No," Whisperstep answered, "they won't be surprised. Good luck." He turned
and went back the way they'd come, vanishing into the shadowy forest.
Redfox looked at Agro. "We don't know what senses these things have beyond an
ability to detect blood," he said, "so you'd better keep back far enough to be out of
sight."
The Croc nodded. "I have been a hunter myself. I can guess what is needed."
"Then let's go." Blackwind plunged down the indicated path, moving a little too
fast.
Nerves, Agro decided. In a way, the Malcornishman's part was the hardest. Or
maybe not. Each part was hard, just different. Redfox caught up with the other
human and said something to him that the Croc couldn't hear. Blackwind stopped and
stared straight ahead for a long moment. Then he turned, dug in one of the packs,
and bound Redfox's hands.
Ah. Good thinking; don't wait until the last minute to start the play they'd
agreed on. When he judged they were far enough ahead, he moved out behind them.

DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
Greeting fellow Lapurians,
Well Dirmael was correct as usual and I received my invite after beating Weipa.
Though my challenge didn't get through to him, luckily he had the same idea and
challenged me. Weipa, your record may not show it, but I know you to be a good and
honorable warrior and I hope you attain Duelmaster and get your invite in due time.
After much thought I have decided to follow my former guild mates Aronwe and Urat and
retire from the arena. Speaking of Aronwe and Urat, they stopped by the guild house
last week and not so surprisingly they announced they are getting married, they are
thinking about a spring wedding date.
Since I am retiring, Dirmael told me too share the invite report with everyone.
First off my stats are 12-4-14-17(1)-17(1)-9-13. The report states that I favor the
scimitar, which doesn't surprise me much. I prefer to fight with a high/moderate
rhythm and my favorite skill to learn is attack and with that said I am afraid my
time is up.
Your Duelmaster and Retiring Lord Protector,
Hulik
SPY REPORT
Much has changed in LAPUR since last I was here. Never fear, Olaf Modeen adapts
to many situations, as do all successful fighters. Phhbltt! Too much drinking and
too little dodging gave WILL DUEL 4 MEAD a 0-0-0! I got a good laugh out of it!
What's with HYDROPONICUS? He actually beat METAL MINCERS' CHROME CRIMPER, and walked
away with 35 more points from the fight. Major screwup at EQUESTORS. GLAUCO lost 16
points to DEADLY ASSASSIN. Some new strategies, perhaps? Maybe GLAUCO will provide
more easy wins... Try as she might, HOOTCHY COOCHER wasn't good enough at persuading
HULIK to step down from the Duelmaster's throne... I suppose you want to hear some
rumors and dirty gossip about your fellow fighters? Tough!
Speaking of cowardly avoiders and unfair challenges... How well I know the
feeling of being in the most avoided team! Don't fall out of practive, CARDOW
HUNTERS! Management must be dealin', as the boys at BOHICA ain't reelin'! CARDOW
HUNTERS' mad! How well I know the feeling of being the most challenged warrior,
CRABBY ABBIE! Don't make idle boasts, they may come back to haunt you. STACY GOO of
APPLICANTS 2 knows how to pick 'em. She challenged OCCY of CROC FILES who is up by
19. Now was this a wise move? STACY GOO perhaps got hers just desserts, seeing as
she was overcame by OCCY and ended up with 8 recognition points.
A fighter's lot is filled with strife, revenge, and killing. Some fighters
don't accept this. The best do. So 2008 sent MAY to the Dark Arena. Big deal.
Plenty more fighters where MAY came from. Dime a dozen... Now, Spyreporters... GOT
MILK, with hers forgettable 3-8-0, was dispatched by CRABBY ABBIE in a forgettable
match. BOHICA didn't seem to mind very much. Is it my imagination, or are fighters
getting younger every day? To die so young, so gloriously!
Well, I'm pretty much through. You guys need to get back practicing. The end
of another Spyreport! That's cause for celebration in my book! I don't want to
overstay my welcome...-- Olaf Modeen

We wish you a Merry Christmas.
We wish you a Merry Christmas,
And a Happy New Year.
Ora and Oremaster (not quite in tune)
Platinum Peener -- Pretty precise with your preening, Peener. But then that was a
pretty impressive performance. -- Bonzo
Gilan -- Ya! Like I needed reminding!!! But, like hey, thanks...maybe I did at
that. Drat! M'armor managed to chafe my neck (turtle defense) despite the padded
collar. S'pose I kin squawk about that till next cycle. -- Crabby Abbie
Chrome Crimper -- Nice backup. Man you really put a crimp into my evening, well the
early part of it at any rate, but then...I got over it. -- Hootchy Cootcher
Alhena -- You work divinely. My first scar, you can initial it if you want, making
your initials my second scar. -- Monterey
Purple Tao -- Call that the tao of getting crunched. -- The Cruncher
Illyria -- Finally, a victory! You've been killing our team! -- Bohica
Callisto -- Same weapon; same fighting-style; same sparkling personality! I thought
I was fighting myself for a moment. -- Cuddle Me Tender
Frain -- Ah, the iron-soled boots? Get rid of 'em. They're slowing you down like
you were nailed to the floor, you know? Not that anybody could be nailed to a floor
of sand, but you know what I mean. -- Red Bull, embarrassed at the ease of that win
Occy -- Damned lizard, you taste AWFUL. -- Mad Dog
P.S. And I really hated it when your tail came off in my mouth. Ptui!
Harry Kane -- Why do I keep thinking you should be a Thin Man? This is confusing,
and I don't NEED confusion right now. -- Firebow
P.S. What I need is a win.
Ice Shard -- Tis the season, but mostly when you guys hit the ground, you shatter. I
had to find out if you're typical of your kind, of course. -- Cloudshadow
P.S. Only a few chips, so you should be fine.
Aaaah! That Dangerous Criminal. Die, Dangerous Criminal, Die. -- Horn Rock
Cuddle Me Tender -- Oh, yeah! I mean, I'd be honored, ma'am. -- Horn Rock
Nilith -- You are? Bad luck to admit it, that kind of thing can get you killed! --
Firebow, totally at a loss, really!
Our congratulations to Hulik. -- Jorja and the Cardow Hunters
P.S. I keep thinking you should be Hulik Do Edel and female, and you keep not. Oh,
well.
