TEAM SPOTLIGHT
Street Walkers votes for 2008 Lapurian Awards
Best Duelmaster -- A lot of good ones, but we have to with Mossman.
Worst Duelmaster -- Murry
Favorite Manager or Team -- Very tough to pick her. I'd have to call it a tie
between Metal Mincer and Mid-Earth...tough competition.
Most Disliked Team or Manager -- Gotta go along the same lines with Visionist. Any
tourney team that fights for a turn or two then disappear for six months.
Most Avoided Team -- While don't avoid a lot...Metal Mincers, just because of the
little Platinum Peener kicking Montana's butt all over the arena thingy. Little good
it did me, I think Peener still beat like 5 times.
Most Challenged Team -- Metal Mincers...they just never got through ;)
Best Team Name -- Bohica gets our vote this year.
Worst Team Name -- 2008, it's just too crafty and imaginative for my tastes.
Best Warrior Name -- Cuddle me Tender
Worst Warrior Name -- All of Will Duel 4 Mead's warriors. They all have three
letters and have no connection to the Team name.
Best Personals Writer -- Sporkis...I actually miss his mindless dribble and rants.
Best Spotlight Writer -- Tie Uncle Wolf and Gavin
The Marcus Award -- Amie...should win this one hands down.
Ahringol's Apprentice Award -- Equestors...lost a few and planted a few as well.
Style Masters.
Best AB -- Kyra
Best BA -- Celadus
Best LU -- Fhrain (edges out the Peener)
Best ST -- Mossman
Best PR -- Mad Jack
Best PL -- Cuddle me Tender
Best PS -- Turtle
Best TP -- Chrome Crimper
Best WS -- Solar Eruption
Best SL -- Aronwe
Bonnie Award -- Tough one to call, but Mossman edges out the competition.

Off the road:
Lord Malcorn led the way. Math op Owain had expected him to go back to the main
road from Malcorn to Murska, but he struck north into the woods, navigating by some
signs or inner compass not available to the Murskan gladiator. Neither Uncle Wolf
nor the Dark Stranger argued, so Math just hunched deeper into his cloak and trailed
after them. It didn't seem like any of them were ready to hear about the hazards of
leaving a known route in the dead of winter. Frostbite was the least of the risks
that Math could think of.
Something howled, and he couldn't tell what it was--not a wolf, nothing that
ordinary--but it sounded close at hand. And when had it gotten so late in the day?
It was going to be dark soon. Okay, maybe those were heavy clouds, not end of the
daylight, but the effect would be the same. Hard to see, colder. It might snow,
too. And here they were out in the woods with no inns at hand. He could use a good
inn about now. Math visualized a good inn, warm fire on the hearth, smells of fresh
bread out of the oven and meat roasting, good beer, featherbeds, oh, yes, he could
use a good inn about now. Camping out was for young people who thought it was an
adventure, not a man old enough to know it was just bad planning and damned
uncomfortable. Huh, and there wasn't a one in this group who was that young, when
you came down to it. What were they thinking?
In the woods:
Blackwind muttered a curse but didn't waste time on it. His sword was out and
he was moving to intercept the materialized Thing immediately. He could see the
Croc, Agro, coming from behind it with the same intent. For his part, Redfox was
throwing himself to the side, trying to get out of the Thing's path, but with his
hands tied and the pack on his back, he was a little slow and a lot clumsy.
The four of them came together in a tangle of bodies and weapons. Blackwind
would have cursed again, if he'd the time and attention for it; in this mess, the
Thing had all the advantage. For it, everyone else was prey. He and Agro, however,
had to be wary of injuring each other or Redfox. Someone was heaving, trying to get
on top. Someone was growling. Someone made a choked sound, cut off abruptly, that
might indicate injury received. Someone else growled. A flash of darkness seared
his vision, leaving bloody afterimages.
Blackwind felt himself rolling over in the snow, alone, and scrambled to stop
himself and get up. He still had his sword in hand, and there was something dark on
the blade. Until his vision cleared, he couldn't tell if it was blood or something
else. He blinked and looked around. Agro was on the other side of the clearing, up
on one knee and wiping his bloody claws in the snow.
Between them, the snow was trampled and stained. And empty of life. No Thing
and no Redfox.
Agro hissed. Blackwind read annoyance into that sound. "We will have to
follow," the Croc said. "Do you suppose Redfox is dead?"
Blackwind nodded. "I can feel the link, but I can't tell that. I guess you
can't either?"
"If the information is there, neither of us knows how to interpret it." The
Croc turned, surveying the edges of the clearing. "The Thing did not leave by normal
physical means. How do we follow?"
Blackwind shrugged and bent stiffly to clean his blade in the snow. "I don't
know anything about travel in the Spirit Land or wherever, but I think... yes. It
must be something in the link that lets us know where Redfox is. Where we know, we
can go."
Agro nodded. "Yes." He went back to the edge of the clearing to pick up the
pack he'd dropped before charging in. "Let us not delay, then."
Somewhere else:
Necroma realized that she was not breathing. Not good. Breathe. Breathe what?
Was there any air here, wherever here was? This whole necromancy business was a lot
more complicated than she'd been led to expect. Strange dimensions completely
separate from the Spirit Lands. Strange life, or maybe un-life, forms. Conflict.
Outright villainy. Probably even politics. When she got out of here, she would
write a sharp letter of protest to her teachers. She would--
Wait a minute. This stuff was all true, but why was she thinking about it now?
She must be hysterical. A situation bad enough to make her hysterical--and spotty
training or not, she WAS a trained necromancer--would have to be dire. A dire
situation needed her full attention. Pack up that hysteria for later.
Okay, no hysteria. Umm. That was going to be hard to achieve, if she didn't
find some kind of anchor for her senses here. Hysteria on a tight rein? Whatever.
First things first. Where was she? Some kind of limbo space, if "space" could be
applied to it. She had got here by going through a door, which must have been a
trap. She'd lost awareness for a while between the door and the limbo. Not helpful,
but that's the way it goes sometimes. There had been voices after the door, during
the early part of the limbo. At least, she thought there had been voices. There
weren't any now.
So, what about breathing? Was her body here? Duh, where else would it be?
Unless, of course, she was dead and her current "self" was just her soul. Didn't
feel like it, but she'd never been dead, so what did she know? But assume she wasn't
dead. Suspended animation? That long-sleep stuff some magicians said they could do
so you woke up and it was years later? Well, maybe. She shrugged mentally.
Wherever she was, whatever her condition, breathing didn't seem to be an option. Or
a necessity, either.
Okay, then, how about "getting out of here" for an option? Movement. Spell-
casting. Movement was pointless unless, make that until, she could establish some
difference between "here" and "there." But spells, now... that might be something
she could do. She began to review her repertoire.

DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
It is not very often I get the chance to write this column. This is a rarefied
position for one from the Equestors stable. I am only the third, I think, to reach
this position. The Platinum Peerner challenged me twice so he could retire as
Duelmaster, the miscreant. Then a match-up has be fighting Red Bull and bam! It is
not a fight he will be putting on his resume and I expect him to challenge me to
regain the title. Well it has been fun going up against everyone. For those still
here, Live Long and Prosper.
SPY REPORT
Hail and well met warriors of LAPUR! Know me for who I am, Zontani Sharp Eyes,
Spymaster extraordinaire of all Alastari. Former top team MID EARTH was unseated
this week as VENUSIANS moved up from 3rd ranking to take the top spot with a 3-2-0
record for the round. There were bitter words at MID EARTH's guildhouse after a
1-4-0 showing this week which dropped the stable into 6th. Dark Arena anyone?
Warriors--remember that glory waits always around the corner! Witness how this week
EQUESTORS went 4-1-0 to move up 4 in the rankings. Did only my eyes note the 3-1-0
record which X-MEN managed to post this round? I don't doubt that such a record will
draw challengers! VINDOCOMUS caught the eye of many in the gladiatorial commission
as he skillfully bested ILLYRIA and was awarded 22 points in recognition. Not for
nothing has CELADUS in the past laid claim to the Duelmaster's throne, and this week
he's proven his combat skill yet again. Would you believe that over half of the old
women in LAPUR seem to feel that they could fight better than you gladiators?
But come now, let us look deeper into the maze of contention and crossed blades
that is city LAPUR. I saw one fighter that warriors avoided when this week's
challenge seeking began. EQUESTORS is feared. This much I can say. Methinks more
than a few here could name the guild it was that spent the better part of last week
avoiding EQUESTORS. Indeed it was METAL MINCERS. Mighty fighters cannot but expect
competition from those below. LITERNIUS take warning! You have more than a few
enemies in LAPUR. A match that raised a few eyebrows at the games this week, it
seems that HYDROPONICUS posted a challenge against the more highly recognized DAISY
CHAINS. The results, you ask? Well, the firebrand HYDROPONICUS overcame DAISY
CHAINS. Remember warriors, this is the discipline of steel.
What warrior does not hone his years, impatiently waiting for the moment of his
foe's mortality? Some guilds are strict but few are as heartless as 2008. Witness,
last turn they sent LEAP YEAR, a 2-0-0 fighter, to the Dark Arena! Walk proud,
warriors of X-MEN! By striking down LUHAR you have avenged the honor of your dead.
Your virtue is known to all in LAPUR. Fate is a fickle mistress. She showers the
miserable with fortune but sets enemies against the victorious. Remember this!
If it were not for my skills as a spy I would have been mugged three times
already in LAPUR. Nice atmosphere you have here! More than a sharp eye must I keep,
indeed a stout pair of legs must I keep as well! The endless paths of Alastari await
me! Till next we meet remember: a fool flies into a rage quickly and often. The
wise are angered by the same thing only once. Zontani Sharp Eyes

Ora and "him"
Roadkill -- You rascal. What a nice thing to say about us. Thank you. -- Ora, on
behalf of all Consortium managers, most of whom are at The Face as we speak
Storm Front -- Whoa. Lou's numbers? Nice! We'll take 'em. We don't seem to get
recruits like that! Perhaps we are not offering enough to the RUGS? -- Ora and The
Metal Mincers and "him"
No one offers us enough anymore. -- RUG #93842
Equestors -- We may have been 4-0, but we could not top your point gain. Well done.
-- The Metal Mincers
Kuan-Yin -- Well, where did I get THAT weapon. I'll bet you were discouraged to see
the outcome. But, I'm pumped! -- Iron Impacter (Pumping Iron--get it?)
Nailin Palin -- Oh, I DID! And it felt mighty fine. -- Chrome Cutter
Digger -- How about that?! Thought you had me, did you? -- Silver Saw
Liternius -- I liked that so I am hoping we do it again the next time. -- Copper
Compacter
Harry Cane vs. Meat Popsicle...geeeez, sounds like an all dude skin flick around here
lately. -- VV
Ghost of Weipa -- Sorry about that, I tend to be a little aggresssive when I get
challenged. -- Mad Dog Montana (Am I the only one that thinks a 6 KD is the deadliest
in the game?)
Chrome Cutter -- Wow, that was quick. I may have been beaten, but I fought hard and
I promise that I'll be back to run for vice president again in 2009. -- Nailin Palin
Starry Nite -- What took you so long? -- Debbie
Callisto -- Even I have to admit that you should have won that one. I'm still trying
to figure out how I managed to pull that one off. -- Daisy Chains
Smack O'Malley -- I'm a little rusty (you know, being dead for so long), next time
the outcome will be different. -- Felicia
Scruffy -- Thanks for the welcome back. I plan on staying around for a while, and
hopefully a few of the other managers will return soon. -- Roadkill
Stormfront -- Tough loss with Lou. Did you ever notice that 21 wit die a lot but 7
wit, 7 will warriors seem to live for ever. -- Roadkill
Dang It Debbie -- Don't go out at night my dear and stay away from any lit torches.
-- Luhar the Wise
Smack O'Malley -- Me thinks your name should be changed to Whiff O'Malley. -- Gilan
the Wisecrack
Silver Saw -- Glurb no like shinies. Glurb go fight in dark. -- Glurb the Buffoon
Deathwind Forge -- Something tells me I am going to need to duck a lot in my next
fight. -- Soon to be Headless Morduh
Cyborg 420 -- That concludes any need for future revenge for the death of Nilith.
Enjoy the skills. -- Fhrain the Merciful
X-Men -- My condolences on your fallen brother, I await your bloodfued. -- Luhar the
Two Time Killa
Deathwind Forge -- I salute your skill in avenging your guildmate. -- Gilan the
Humbled
All -- Don't forget to do your spotlight and submit your votes for the Lapurian
Awards, everyone. -- Visionist
Horn Rock -- Don't take your frustration with Cuddles out on ME!! What did I do??
Oh well, if I had to lose, I'm glad it was to a warrior that we here at Bohica
greatly respect. -- Needs Salt
Copper Compacter -- I feel your pain. I was avoiding the Cardow Hunters last turn
and guess who I randomly matched up with? Yes sir! -- Needs Salt
Harry Cane -- Are you stalking me?? -- Meat Popsicle
Cuddle Me Tender -- Is that what you call it? I'd never have guessed. -- Mad Dog
Occy -- Alligator shoes! -- Cloudshadow
Celadus -- Someone said your name sounded like china, but that can't be right. If
you were china, I'd've smashed you to bits. It's traditional. -- Red Bull
Needs Salt -- Ah, yes, there are days like that for all of us. -- Horn Rock
Ice Shard -- Damn. -- Ghost of Firebow
P.S. I'm the third Hunter with a fire name to die in this string. I think it's a
bad sign. I shall recommend that my successor NOT take a fire name.
Ora -- Ma'am! I thank you for those words, but I suspect that are undeserved. -- Red
Bull
Scruffy -- I think too many people were too, ah, overcome from celebrating the new
year. They're back on their feet and on the front page now. -- Red Bull
Starry -- Remind me not to do it next time! -- Cloudshadow
Our congratulations to Celadus. -- Jorja and the Cardow Hunters
