As Pan Bread the butcher looked out his window he could see a dense flock of what appeared to be dark birds headed to an old part of town where once a great arena team of some standing had held sway. What could this portend? Article 2 page three column one astrology column. Scribe Bertrand Fredrick Scorsetro could not believe the fancy tales the scribe was telling him as he prattled away. "Sir really I think this story is worth a few coppers in the least. These great flocks of what I thought were birds flew into that old market place that has been locked up for years. The one built by the Arena team. Well partially built. Sir I think we have a story in the making I checked with a couple of the beggars and they say that at least one of the Arena managers has gone down to the complex. Don't you think there is a story in an old Arena team returning and especially that one? I mean Sir they started to build their market complex had success in the arena then when the whiney old goats complained about their construction they up and pulled out. They wait 10 years till those people are not in power and then maybe return. What could this portend Sir? Aren't you curious? Don't you think your readers have a right to know? Said Scribe Bertrand with enthusiasm although getting paid to research such an interesting phenonomum would be fantastic. Fredrick leaned against the press roughly causing the unbraced letters to shift from the type he was setting for tomorrow's edition of "Lapur a shop Keepers Prospective." He was not the big paper in town financed by the coffers of the upper class and merchants with support of the crown. He did well though and was generally rewarded by most of the housewives and in the kitchens of the wealth establishments his paper was always available. It was not like the upper crust never read his paper just they would never subscribe to it for they only wanted a paper that was delivered like mail. Fredrick's father said if a person was not willing to come to your stand for the news then they didn't really want it they just needed something to line their bird cage. So Fredrick's empire of 20 stands throughout Lapur operated solely on the walk up customers and the few entrepreneurial young girls and boys who bought in bulk and sold the papers at the larger markets, business complexes, government centers, police station and the gates. "Betrand I tell you what. You look into this and give me a little write up on your portent and I'll pay you the usually rate." Said Fredrick. Well he did need something for page five in that whole above the add for compost. "Yes Sir" replied Bertrand with enthusiasm. "I am on it." Things might have been happening quicker than Bertrand was aware. Terista Fangler had just picked up her load of papers and delivered her small list of subscription clients. She was headed off to take the ones for sale at the gate whistling to herself. She thought that fool Fredrick why doesn't he get into the delivery business. I am sure he could increase profits. The big paper does it. People pay her just to get the paper at the stand and bring it to their home. Shesh too easy. Profit every single day. She remembered her first touch of the paper when her dad had used it to teach her to read. The feel of the type on the page. Well she could feel it. She could practically read the whole paper without looking at it. That's why she could sell the heck out of it at the gate. The tourist came to her cause she was a comely lass but the merchants came to her because she knew what was in the paper and while looking them dead in the eye could tell them who was having a sale on what today. Oh the merchants valued Terista. They bought her papers and actually sometimes read them but if she knew how much time she saved them over the merchants coming through the other gates she would charge triple. This mourning as she reached the gate as it was opening. No one left their gates full open at night. Easier to guard a shut gate by golly. And they had the smaller night gate anyway but this mourning the gate was full open but traffic was stopped. The night gate was closed while the merchants where bustling about wanting to get through get their paper and be off to make their dough. At the gate a large caravan with easily 100 wagons and now banners was on the road and in the countryside just outside the gates. Wagon drivers and barkers all lounging around as Two Wagon drivers and the Convoy Commander or Wagon Master as he was likely to be called argued with the guardsman. Terista could hear just a part of what was being said, "Look I can't let 100 covered wagons in without and inspection and I can't inspect them till the merchant traffic gets through so move your wagons out of the way," which received the reply of, "move 100 wagons you say wait for you to get around to us. We were here first and we..." Trista saw as the discussion continued a Man riding up on a fine Quarter Horse followed by 5 other men bristling with armor and weapons. The man stopped and spoke to the Wagon Master, "Our agreement was to deliver the goods to my market what's the hold up." Even though the man in the Purple traveling cloak and dark britches with a strange cut to them seemed to talk quietly his words carried. They seem to float on the wind to Terista's ears as the smell of his pipe also invaded her senses. A nice aromatic vanilla with a smattering of Cavendish and burly. She had smelled that before. Terista missed the rest of the conversation but no one could miss the man in purple hand the wagon master 2 gold ingots like they were coppers and say to the guards. "I thank you for your due diligence my good fellows however to let one merchant in before another would be a great insult. Are you sure that is the way this gate is to be run." The guards blanched as the Captain of the guard came up to the Gate. "What is the meaning of this?" he bellowed. Till he caught sight of the man in the purple Cloak. "Oh LOL is this, the cause for problems." The huge Captain a retired Arena warrior laughed and smiled all at the same time. He was a young man in his mid 30s. A large man a survivor of the games. No man could out drink or out run George Questor. Faster yes but only the elite warriors of the arena had his constitution. "Purple Sage Landholder of Lapur please pass and I will assist with this business." Said George with authority and he added "Sir I would love to talk to you when you have time." Purple Sage replied, "Absolutely" as he moved his small group through the gate and headed into town. Terista knew George and had some questions to ask but first she needed to buy more papers this was going to be a busy day she had sold all her papers in less than 10 minutes and many were still waiting. Unless surplus soldiers arrived this search was going to take all day maybe two. She hurried off to the nearest stand to get papers. * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * Don't Fear the Reaper Standing in the center of the arena the dwarven warrior looked to the heavens and grinning as he accepted the approval of the crowd. Holding the hilt of his weapon to his chest he whispers too himself, "That was for you young one, be at peace." Lowering his weapon he turns and salutes the arenamaster and his fallen foe before heading towards the tunnel. Normally his guild mates would be waiting to congratulate him at the entrance, but today was not a normal day, for a member of his house had fallen during combat earlier and that was not something too celebrate. An hour later, the Mid Earth guild members stood quietly outside the arena waiting for their manager when a commission scribe ran up and handed a parchment to the guild leader Dirmael. Dirmael nodded a thanks to the scribe and quietly read the scroll before motioning the guild's weapon master over. Dirmael handed the scroll to Kalimac and heading back into the arena. A few moments later Dirmael returned followed by the Visionist who spoke up, "Okay everyone I think we all agree this has been a tough day, so let's head over to the Inn and raise one for Malain and the new duelmaster." Everyone nods and quietly heads toward the Inn. Inside they find the biggest table available and order a round of ale. A moment later the waitress brings the round and Fhrain grabs his ale and stands followed by everyone else. Raising his mug high he states, "Though you weren't with us long you left an impression on us all, you will be missed." In unison they all state, "For Malain." After a moment's pause Dirmael raises his ale and proclaims, "Now to Fhrain, our new Duelmaster and Lord Protector." Everyone hesitates a few seconds, then looks toward Dirmael and he just grins back and nods, "It's true boys, congratulations Fhrian." With the exception of the newest member Revil and the Visionist, everyone surrounds Fhrain congratulating him. Revil though slowly falls back into his seat, his face an ashen white. The full affects of seeing his guild mate killed in the arena having finally taking hold of him. The celebrating members hadn't noticed him yet, but the manager had. Quietly slides his hand under his arm and helps the new recruit too his feet and escorts him to the door. Outside he helps the young golem around the corner and leans him against a stone wall. Fumbling in his pockets he pulls out a small vial and forces him to drink the contents. A moment later the apprentice warrior feels a calm come over him and begins to regain focus of his surroundings. "Sir how did I get out here?" asks Revil. "Nevermind that, let's take a walk." The potion effects begin to even out as they walk down the street at an even pace. The potion was a truth serum that doesn't last for a long time. It calms the person and makes them more focused, which in turn makes it more difficult too be untruthful. It wasn't the best thing to use in the situation, but it was all he had with him at the time. The manager had seen this with new warriors before, usually it fades after a few fights. But sometimes the sight of seeing death up close so soon in their career is too much for them to handle. "Son you really don't want to fight in the arena do you?" queried the manager. "I thought I did, but after seeing what happened too Malain I am not so sure anymore," he replied quietly. "Hmmm, you should have thought of that when you signed up with the commission, but then again you aren't the first one too make the same hasty decision. Well I guess the only way out now is too fight in the dark arena." "Ohh please sir I don't want to end up like poor Malain, isn't there another way?" "Come on now, you aren't the first to have changed his mind you know. You don't really think all of the managers here are so heartless as to be sending all of the young and naive warriors like yourself to the dark arena on a whim do you?" he replied with furrowed brow. "Well no...I guess...but you...how?" stammered Revil. "You don't really need too know the details of how I am saving your hide now do you?" sternly stated the manager. "Well no sir, but how can I repay you?" answered the confused young golem. "You can repay me by not making such a foolish mistake in the future." "I will try sir, thank you." "Now don't worry about it I will make all the arrangements and your gladiator career will be over next round," grinned the Visionist patting Revil on the back. "Where are we?" asked Revil looking around. "I have never been in this section of town before." Looking up and down the street the manager knew where he was right away, in the distance a block or so away he could see the stone walls of a castle. * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===FREE BLADES REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 9 ZUKAL (turn 612): KEEL HAULER of SEA DOGS (One-Armed Bandit, mgr.) Well finally I became duelmaster and got my invite to boot. I am told I will not be going into retirement, I am going to take a short vacation before reporting to Talahaya. Since I am not retiring I am not allowed too post my full stats, but here are a few teasers. You can guess what my wit is, in 27 total fight experience I have learned 65 skills. I currently have 3 master ratings, one advanced expert rating and one expert rating. My favorite skill to learn is decisiveness, which was a big surprise considering I have learned more skills in 3 other areas than decise. So I guess this is farewell Lapur, until I come back to visit. Fhrain Duelmaster and Lord Protector. SPY REPORT The sages err'd not in their foretelling of a god descending upon LAPUR, for I, Novgorodny Vir, have returned! METAL MINCERS after a sorry 1-2-0 might want to consider abandoning the sands and taking up singing the 'Can't fight no more' blues! What's a move up by 5 you ask? (alright, maybe you didn't ask) Cause for celebration, according to BOHICA. Practice pays for FELICIA, who pummelled VINDOCOMUS, to pocket 24 points. LIME certainly had a baffled expression on hers face, after losing to LEMMING LEADER and losing 18 points in the process! FHRAIN successfully staved off a grab for the roses by DAISY CHAINS of STREET WALKERS. Does LAPUR have no one talented enough to dethrone him? So who's the team that's been walking into taverns last week and ordering milk? Sounds like a PR stunt to me. And how sociable are LAPUR's warriors? Come, let us see. Perhaps the warriors of METAL MINCERS should take up some hobbies, as they are the most avoided team... As a woman of good breeding scorns the "warriors" of X-MEN, so did that sorry team shy from METAL MINCERS Everyone is famous for fifteen minutes, and LITERNIUS is it right now. Most challenged warrior. Isn't EQUESTORS proud! LITERNIUS found himself challenged by a warrior 19 below: CUDDLE ME TENDER. CUDDLE ME TENDER of BOHICA kept hers wits as she bested LITERNIUS. Ah, the duel! The roar of the oppenent, the smell of the crowd! Justice was served as MEAT POPSICLE fought A.A. SHOCK in bloodfeud. Well done, BOHICA! Questions are being raised about the disposing of severed body parts in the arena. A certain tavern in LAPUR would I avoid! Leave me now, you base fools! As the seasons change, and the creatures of the wild change also, so do I feel a yearning to leave this place. Can anything compare to the pleasure of writing Spyreports for LAPUR? Solid indeed, and we wish more of our (and our Consortium friends) bashers looked THAT good! -- Ora and Oremaster Kuan-Yin -- You are such the comedian. -- Iron Impacter VV of X-Men, a salute to you. -- Ora, what's His Name, and The metal Mincers Kuan-Yin Xorn -- I thank you for the challenge. I enjoy easy wins. -- Chrome Cutter Misty Waters -- I'll not shed a tear for you. -- Iron Impacter Mad Dog Montana -- Now THAT was a DM Column. Well done, Lady. -- Ora and Oremaster Nice'n legs too, ye betcha. -- Oremaster Do you all see what a dimwit I have to put up with? -- Ora P.S. Not that M D Montana's legs aren't quite nice, but .... Purple Sage -- Where be ye? -- Oremaster Bohica - We mourn the lose of Scruffy, for we, too, feel that Aimed Blows need to enjoy the life of bountifulness longer that only Lapur can take away so easily. We await your retaliation with honor. - Storm Front, mgr. Force of Nature P.S. At least Scruffy was not sitting on the throne...that would have stung even more. Occy -- I've heard of a glass jaw, but a glass buttocks...? -- Ice Shard Alhena -- Come on back anytime you feel like getting worn out again and need some skills...lucky! -- Starry Nite Iron Impacter -- Hmmm, you're pretty fast...considering you out-jumped me. I am used to losing but not getting the jump is new to me. -- Misty Waters Compactor -- I guess with today's ecomony, Copper's worth even less. -- Daisy Chains Vindocomus -- Better luck next time. -- Felicia He just beat you Felicia. -- Roadkill What?, what did I miss? I was winning, everything was going as planned...it just doesn't seem right. -- Felicia Fhrain -- Congrats on the title and the invite. -- Roadkill and the Street Walkers Force of Nature -- Nice point gain. -- Roadkill Equestors -- You've been on a tear lately, nice job. -- Roadkill All -- So much for lifting the curse of the AB here in Lapur. Our condolences to the Bohica stable on your loss of Scruffy Puff. -- Roadkill and the Street Walkers Spartacus -- Interesting set-up with Celadus. Most of my basher designs tend to be a little more traditional. As far as I'm concerned, as long as you have fun running the fighter and also learn from the experimental design, that's all that matters. -- Roadkill Hey did everyone notice that Bonnie stopped by to offer me congrats??? THE BONNIE!!! -- the hero-worshipping Mad Dog Montana I think since next cycle is turn 600 for the arena, everyone gets to beat up NPC's, go 5-0 and all warriors learn 6 skills...might as well start the celebration on a good foot ;) -- Roadkill Dream on. -- Arenamaster Kyall Fhrain -- Dang I just can't seem to keep a winning record. -- Callisto Make sure to keep it in an air-tight bag, and refrigeration helps. Starry Nite --I don't care for the loss, but the learns make up for it. -- Alhena Red Bull -- Can't give a girl a chance to swing? -- Atria Horn Rock -- I think I like you. -- Illyria May -- I'm glad I got to try out that broadsword on you , it seems that it is not my favorite. -- Solar Radiation Celadus -- Ohh sure make fun of me and you try to chop my arm off. Too hell with anger management, everyone must die! -- Fhrain the Enraged Colossus -- I have never seen someone try and hide behind a tree during combat before. Congrats on avenging your fallen teammate. -- Luhar the Humbled Smack O'Malley -- How you stayed on your feet so long while hauling that tree around amazes me. -- Gilan the Bewildered Misty Waters -- I was lucky, that could have gone either way. -- Malain the Fortuitous Callisto -- A women standing between a dwarf and his destiny is like a flower standing in front of a stampeding herd, both are going to get trampled. -- Lord Protector Fhrain the Philosopher Needs Salt -- If you knew what I was muttering, you wouldn't have saluted me. -- Nearly Neutered Luhar Lucy -- Thanks for the much needed confidence boost, I needed it. -- Gilan the Arse Lucky Eireann -- It would seem my luck has run out. -- Ghost of Malain January -- You can take that special move and shove it up your <beeeeeeeep>. Thanks to you I will be fighting by torch light next time. -- Revil Mad Dog Montana -- Congrats on your invite. You have accomplished something very rare for Lapur. -- Visionist and the Mid Earth Guild Bishop -- You have an imposing appearance, but being a golem (and I have no idea how that happened, my mother never mentioned it) I am not readily imposed. Good try, though. -- Cloudshadow Bran McRaven -- Odd, you don't LOOK like a crow. You don't look much like a dwarf, either, except for the mustache, but we have long been aware that the Commission is odd about such things. -- Waterstone Atria -- How about if we go find some private corner and smooch? -- Red Bull, uninterested in subtlety today Illyria -- Small, cute, and nasty. I hate that in a woman. -- Horn Rock P.S. Or a man, for that matter. I really can't stand cute. Smack O'Malley -- When the arenamaster called out your name, I thought it was an instruction, and I did it. -- Mad Dog Needs Salt -- Just a little garlic should do it. -- Cloudshadow Our congratulations to Fhrain. -- Jorja and the Cardow Hunters At this point, it seems unlikely I'll manage to get an episode worth printing done in time for this newsletter. Sorry about that. It's just been one thing after another. -- the Scribe Faylin -- How's the air way up there? Do you realize the height difference was two feet? I guess if you can't see me, you can't hit me. -- Julianus But what about the danger of getting stepped on? Wexle -- I hope all the bruises clear up before my next bout. -- Encolpius Felicia -- You are my second TP scalp. I am now 2-1 vs you guys. -- Vindocomus Colossus -- It pains me to abuse you like I have done in our two meetings. If you believe that I have a bridge in a place called Brooklyn I am trying to sell -- Glauco Cuddle Me -- It would have been a lot nicer to really cuddle than to rumble. -- Liternius Lapur -- A good week--a 5-0 turn, a team that is currently 47-37-2, probably go 0-5 this turn. -- Spartacus, mgr.
