Fredrick Scorsetro, while leaning over his bucket mixing ink for tomorrow's edition of "Lapur a shop Keepers Prospective.", Motioned for Scribe Bertrand to come over. "Sir, I have found something of note. I checked the archives of the city and have the minutes of a meeting on a civil contract with the city of Lapur," said Scribe Bertrand enthusiastically. "Let me see it," said Fredrick adjusting his glasses. (Managerial Aside. Reference Lapur Arena Newsletter Turn 175) Minutes Lapur Contracts Division. Three Month Street Cleaning Contract From Harvest moon, 503, cycle 174 through Frostrule 504, cycle 181; the Contractor agrees to sweep the cobbled streets of Lapur. The streets are to be defined as those cobbled at this time, cycle 174. Amendments: 1) No repair of streets shall be required by this contract. 2) No city materials, i.e.; property or items, shall be removed without express written consent. 3) No private property may be removed without express written consent. 4) All streets must receive equal treatment. 5) Employees must receive pay at least equal to that of the lowest Civil Employees. 6) Every street covered in the contract must be swept at least once per week. Payment for the 4 square kilometers of streets which are cobbled shall be 400 Lapurian Marks per Month. Contractee X signed by Farnon Garthin, Secretary to Council of Lapur Contractor x Quiflex for Black Kelts "Sir this is a ridiculous contract. I checked with some local contractors and some old contractors at the time. They said that with only 400 marks a month they would be limited to 3 people 30 marks per week each and 40 marks for materials. It was ridiculous Sir so I checked and the contract was fulfilled. And look at this I wrote down the follow up contracts though for more money till the current 1 year contract which is held in the name of some Guy Tiffinal and a Lord Protectorate named Human Sacrifice. Those Warriors sure chose strange fight names. He was/is a manager for Black Kelts. So they have been cleaning the streets all these years. His operation runs out of a facility that backs up to the Black Kelts Market Square. I even found a map of the Square," said Bertrand all in one breath. "Whoa there Scribe, Catch a breath. This looks very interesting. I think you have two lines of inquiry and you do know that the Black Kelts are here now!" said Fredrick with a smile on his face. "Sir, I know they are here but, well, I mean, which way do you want to go. I can get current info on what they're doing or follow this." Said Bertrand feeling he knew what was about to happen. "Well from the papers prospective a New/old Market square reopening is your top priority," said Fredrick firmly. As Bertrand headed to the Black Kelts Market square things where already in motion. At the Square Wagons where arriving through the once locked gates of the square. Chestnut Street was crowded with wagons, drivers, tenders and miscellaneous onlookers. The smell of cooking was already wafting out as food was brought out to the waiting wagons. How could 100 wagons fit in there? They went in but did not come out. Hawkers Way would occasionally be blocked then the commotion would start again. Trista stood in the horde of people selling "Lapur a Shop Keepers Prospective." To anyone who was buying. In the last two days she had made more than she usually makes in a week. She could not believe her good fortune. She was also mystified at the orderly progression with which the carts rolled into the North Prize Street entrance to the Black Kelts Market square on Chestnut Street. It seemed like the Black Kelts where here to stay. She hungered to go inside and see the activities but losing a sale was not in her best interest. So she continued to hawk her paper as she saw Bertrand running breathlessly towards her. She waved to him and tried to garner his attention. Bertrand made a bee line for the young news girl. "Hello Trista," said Bertrand nearly out of breath as a bead of sweat dripped from his aquiline nose. "Hey Bertrand you out here for information for a story line." Replied Trista as she made change for a customer. You have it." "Know anything?" queried Bertrand. "Well all I know is there is a ton of people and wagons here and they go in but none come out. Are you going inside?" retorted Trista. "Defiantly!" said Bertrand as he hustled of to the gate. As Bertrand approached the gate he saw that the Wagon master was picking certain wagons to come through and as he looked through the gate down the Prize Street alley he saw that the gate at the South entrance was closed. The wagon he followed began its journey into the street as a man in a white robe leaned out to him with a very sharp extremely menacing rapier to bar his path. Bertrand swallowed noisily as he looked over this lean faced man in sheer white robes. Something was not right about him. His skin was smooth too smooth and nearly featureless. The hands of the man that extended from the robe where as white as fine marble veins and all. Bertrand was about to bolt when another man appeared quickly to interject himself. "Can we be of some assistance Sir?" asked Tiffinal the Arena manager for the Black Kelts. "Umm yes, yes Sir I was wondering if I might gather some information for the paper I write for." said Bertrand with hesitation not knowing if the straight approach was the way to go. "What Paper do you write for." said Tiffinal in a mater of fact way. "Lapur a shop Keepers Prospective. Sir." Said Bertrand quickly. "Excellent, Excellent Please come with me and I shall give you the tour." Said Tiffinal. Bertrand could not believe his good fortune as he asked the man his name and position. "My name is Tiffinal and I am the general assistant to the Purple Sage and manage his team and assets here in Lapur. I am a man of many hats at the moment." Stated Tiffinal with a sigh. "Now as you can see this is Prize Street which is the avenue of entry to our market square which has its entrance in the middle of the street off to the right. As we pass through this gated archway we enter the open court yard of the market square where we have many shop spaces for lease." Continued Tiffinal as they negotiated through the street and arch past the wagons as they moved towards the southern corner of the facility where a huge ramp was constructed going over a wall into another area blocked from sight by the 5 meter walls. Bertrand could not help but remark as he saw the awesome walls and buildings within the market square and their layout to support a shopping environment. He could not help but smell the cooking coming from a building to the north and the noise of hammering coming from a building just ahead and to his right. He also became curious of the circular tower which stood in the center of the square in his point of view till he moved closer to the obvious kitchen where the smells where coming from he realized the Tower was connected by a balustrade to another tower in the other courtyard and that it was off center. It was positioned to allow a cart to turn right or left while entering the Square and most of the carts seemed to have turned left to go up the ramp in that corner. "This is Luca's Kitchen and food is free for the moment. When I finish the tour I recommend you have a bite to eat. Going past Luca's Kitchen there where four large 20Mx20M buildings with the contents of carts lain inside. He could see into them for they all had what appeared to be open fronts however he saw sheets and sheets of unbelievable amounts of glass to be placed in the openings. The buildings all seemed to be of sturdy stone with a smooth finish that he could not believe. These stones had no joints and no sign of being stacked it was like they had been iced like a cake. Two no three smaller independent buildings stood out in the more central part of the market to allow traffic all around them. Along the back wall of the 100Mx100M Market were 4 more buildings and one of them seemed to already be occupied with Sculptures of varying sizes. Tiffinal remarked as they neared the building, "This is Lord Protectorate Virgin Blonde's studio. He is a sculptor of some renown." They now made the turn back west towards the entrance of the Market square and the huge ramp that was being used to move many wagons into the other courtyard. Three buildings to his left and 4 buildings to his right seemed to make another walk way however the fourth building and another building directly ahead seemed to be unfinished since the huge ramp was in there place. "It's much too dangerous to take you to the ramp and that is merely storage, living facilities, and training grounds for the Team and Staff." Said Tiffinal. Bertrand could not believe his good fortune and quickly asked a question before his moment might slip away. "Sir can I ask when you intend to reopen this facility." "We already are open and are merely finishing up some of the general touches. We are looking for interested parties who would like to move or establish their business in this Market in Shrieve Ward. We believe that a secure shopping environment in a one stop shop will attract many of the customers who do not wish to run all over looking for their weekly purchases. We believe that a secure market as opposed to the transient tent cities that litter many cities will attract people and their families to relax and enjoy shopping from all over Alastari." Said Tiffinal with a broad smile on his sharp featured face and Pointed ears as though it was a rehearsed statement ready for print in a Market Paper. Bertrand could feel the pull of this man who was a leader and felt that he was being honest. Bertrand asked and what of the existing merchants won't you be cutting into their business." said Bertrand trying to draw Tiffinal out. "Yes," replied Tiffinal succinctly with another broad smile. "Oh," Stammered Bertrand quickly recovering to add a follow-up question. "I see all these wagons will you be running your own supply train also." "No," Laughed Tiffinal. "We are decommissioning most of the wagons and will merely use the leftovers to replace the ones we have in our street cleaning business." Added Tiffinal. As they once again approached the Noisy Smithy and Luca's Kitchen Bertrand ventured another question. "And Sir will you be selling any of these establishments." "No, not at this time." Replied Tiffinal. "Please enjoy the food at Luca's Kitchen. I must be off," Finished Tiffinal as he moved off to talk to some men and seemed to point out Bertrand to them. Bertrand sauntered over to Luca's Kitchen to see what he might learn. He was feeling mighty pleased with himself all thoughts of contracts and street cleaning merely a murmur in his brain. Continued-------------------------------- * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * There was such a bustle from Arthur's Smithy to Luca's Kitchen. Wagon and herd tenders scattered all over the open grounds with the ambrosia of delicious smells from all over Alastari emanating from their plates. Conversation seemed minimal as the sound of spoons scooping food from the plate was heard. The only noise was located in two spots in the courtyard around Luca's Kitchen. The line that leads into the kitchen was full of men and women with huge smiles on their faces raising jubilant voices fantasizing as to what to do with their riches. The cause of the riches was the second source of the noise from the line of people carefully controlled by ropes and fierce warriors in front of the paymaster. This elaborate system seemed equal to only some of the largest banks of Alastari or mayhaps the treasury of its greatest lords thought the Scribe Bertrand with little true reference points to draw on but his imagination. There where no great bags of coinage or sacks of precious gems. No the pay master sat at his station behind his table on which sat nothing other than a gleaming guillotine. The scribe Bertrand nearly stubbed over a man eating as he pondered the Pay-Masters set up. Bertrand moved closer to observe the goings on oblivious to the overwhelming hunger he had earlier felt. He moved closer to observe the pay master and as he did the warriors shifted position with one warrior moving directly in his line of sight to the table. Bertrand moved to get a better angle and was astonished to see the actual paymaster in action. Bertrand leaned against the wall of the Smithy watching the efficiency of the pay master. As a worker would step to the front of the line he would give his name to beautiful long haired lass with a large book resting on a stand. The worker would converse with the women and then the women would shout to the paymaster 1 portion, 1 1/4 portions or some other numerical statement. The paymaster would then set an ingot of gold or silver under the guillotine and slice a weight from the piece. He would then place the slice upon a scale to weigh it. He would then grab small leather bag and add jerries to the bag. He would then place the slice in the bag and the worker would approach. The worker would then check the bag and its contents freely able to use the scales if he so desired. Once satisfied he/she would sign a book upon the pay masters table followed by the paymaster's signature and one of the warriors initials. Bertrand noticed the pay master's hands while reaching across the table to the book. He had one short index finger. This was obviously a learning experience for any apprentice with this unusual pay system. Bertrand's stomach grumbled as he realized his hunger had not been abated. He began to make his way once more into the line at Luca's kitchen. At the door way he could see the lean man behind the serving line directing all the traffic through his establishment. He recognized some of the younger citizens of Lapur acting as the wait staff and Luca he looked so familiar. He was a tall thin man with a balding head and a look of years upon him. Bertrand was sure he had seen him here in Lapur before in one of the open air markets selling his wares. As Bertrand moved closer in the line his stomach visibly grumbled as though it was anxious for this food. All manner of meat was cooked in the grill behind the counter and a plethora of pots containing aromatic mixtures could only contribute to the hunger he felt in his soul. Bertrand approached the serving line and was given a large tray. Upon this tray where placed a large plate, a small plate, a bowl, some silverware and a mug. Bertrand moved forward and began to choose some of the most succulent food he had seen. He selected a meat he had never heard of that the server called Turduken and some potatoes that where sliced and baked in cheese. A portion of long green spears with a lemon butter mix was placed upon his plate. In the smaller plate a small loaf of bread with herbs baked into the crust. Into the bowl a strange soup which seemed to be white with pieces of some seafood in it and a hint of spice. At the end of the line was a large Barrel with a tap in it. Some glorious brew filled his mug with a foaming top. This he recognized right away and could not help taking a sip as he made his way to a place to eat. He was going to like researching this Black Kelts team. "Food for Thought Builds better brains" + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ Edge of Night #32 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ + Somewhere in the Spirit Lands: "Okay," Cloudrider said, "so we work on Uncle Wolf's project." He looked around at the dim landscape of ferny plains. "How do we do that?" Young Joan closed her eyes; he guessed she was consulting her ghost partner, Selumia. "There should be a.... Damn, it isn't clear at all. A zone of transition." Cloudrider looked around, pointedly. There was no variation in the scenery in any direction. "There will be such a zone when we expect it to be there," Nightwind said in the back of Cloudrider's mind. "The geography here is not fixed as it appears in the Outer Lands. Expectation and belief are critical." "Okay," Joan said, and he figured she must have heard the same thing from her ghost. "We're climbing a long hill here, and when we get to the top, we'll see the zone of transition beyond it." Looking at the ferny ground ahead of him, Cloudrider saw that it was, indeed, a long slope with a crest somewhere ahead. He could almost see a top to it. This was a relief, to have a definite, clear goal. "So, let's get walking," he said. The two not-humans, the nighthunter and the other, looked up as Blackwind and Agro approached. Blackwind had an idea that hot words had been exchanged, something in their postures hinted at hostile confrontation between them. Maybe that would work in their--his and Agro's and Redfox's--favor, that their enemies weren't likely to combine against them. Or maybe the living versus whatever was a stronger factor. Trying to calculate all the angles made his head ache. The taller creature, the Other, fixed a burning gaze on the gladiator from Malcorn. Literally burning, it felt like. Blackwind wondered how long it would take for his face to blister from the heat. "Why are you here?" the Other asked. The nighthunter laid a paw on Redfox, extending its claws like a cat. "This is MINE," it whined, "you bound it, that proves it was meant for sacrifice even without the Words!" The Other's face changed color, going from a not-really-human sort of mauve to near-black, and its eyes dilated and glowed hotter as it turned on the nighthunter, teeth--fangs--bared. "You dared? You have broken the ancient contract, and you dared to involve ME in this transgression?" The claws flexed and dug in, drawing blood. "This is MINE!" it said again. Whining, protesting, obstinate as the stupid and fearful can be. The Other roared something in a language the gladiators didn't recognize. The nighthunter burst into flames and fled, wailing and screeching, with lingering shouts of, "MINE!" "That is a fool, as it has always been," the Other said. "But you set a trap for it, did you not?" Blackwind remembered advice from long ago: if you don't know what lies will go over, tell the truth. "Yeah, we did," he said. "What we were told, things were getting out of hand, rules were being broken. We wanted... names." "And that gave you mine?" "If your name is Arhazul, yeah. The name was mentioned." "A fool, and always a fool. I will unmake it. But that is for later enjoyment. You have my name, one of them. You have found me. What do you intend to try here?" It occurred to Blackwind that the Other had never once looked at Agro, or addressed the Croc, and maybe it couldn't even see the cold-blooded gladiator? Maybe it thought the "we" referred only to himself and Redfox. Interesting, but no time to test it right now. "Don't know," he said, shrugging. It was damned hard to maintain the casual attitude, but he had an idea it was the right one here. "We were just told to gather information. Someone's been messing with, I didn't get this exactly, but with the way people's souls travel after they die? Something like that. We were sent out to get some names." "And that gave you mine?" The Other seemed to swell with wrath. "I will unmake it slowly and use the parts after in ways it will die to regret. But to you I say, I swear on the Crimson Gates of Hell, I have not been 'messing' with the movement of souls. There are certain rules to which all agree, that existence may continue. I do not transgress them." And the worst of that was, Blackwind believed it. Whatever was going on with the souls, this Other was not part of the problem. "Who dared suggest that I might be involved?" "Eh? Well, that nighthunter you chased off. It was the first one to mention your name." "Not enough. Who sent you to ASK that one?" Oh, shit. Feuds among the immortal demons? JUST what they needed to get sucked into. Blackwind hesitated. Maybe he could finesse this-- "It was a Dark Stranger from the Silent Place near Zuwayza," Redfox said. His voice was hoarse but steady. A sizzling sound. The Other, too angry even to swear promises of retribution, fury coming off it like waves of heat off a forge. "Silent Place!" it said finally. "It will be silent no longer. There will be screams! THEY traffic in souls, never doubt it, and it is THEY who are breaking the Rules! THEY will pay for this infamy." "Yes, well, we can take that message back to the people in charge--" "What people are in charge? How can humans interfere in this?" "Whoever's doing it is interfering with humans," Blackwind pointed out. "Only reasonable we should try to get it straightened out." "Who?" "Well... Lord Malcorn, and...." "Oh. Yes, the Malcorn... He would. Yes. He has the right, and a right is also a duty. He would involve Himself, He must." The flaming eyes narrowed. "And He will see to it that the blame falls on the guilty, and not on those such as myself who have kept the agreements. Yes." A decisive nod. "I will conduct my own investigation into this transgression, and you will aid me, human." "Ah...." "I will make it a bargain, according to the rules. The life of this one," it lifted Redfox easily and shook him as a child might shake a doll, "in return for your aid." "Ah, don't these rules say you can't kill him without permission?" A mouth full of fangs, in what might be a smile. "I cannot KILL him, take him as a sacrifice, without the Words, but any mortal astray in this realm is at risk of other things. Many other things. Which I could do, if I wish, without any Words being spoken. Because his presence here at all is a kind of permission." "That sounds a lot like the argument that nighthunter was making." "The cases differ. That one was in your world, but you are in MY world. It makes a difference, you see it?" "Yeah." Boy, did Blackwind see it. They were all over a barrel here. Not just Redfox, he himself was here where he was at risk of the 'many other things', and Agro as well, if the Other ever figured the Croc was present. "Okay, I guess I don't like the other choice much, so, what do you want us to do?" * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===FREE BLADES REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 9 ZUKAL (turn 614): HEMPEN JIG of SEA DOGS (One-Armed Bandit, mgr.) SPY REPORT It is I, Novgorodny Vir, Spymaster of Spymasters. Look on my work, ye mighty, and despair! Those betting on EQUESTORS lost their shirt, as EQUESTORS lost their fighting abilities: 1-4-0. Nothing works for a team like victory (How's that for a perceptive observation?) as WILL DUEL 4 MEAD can attest... CLAN CROW posted a nice gain, to come in 6th. Everybody loves a winner... WILL DUEL 4 MEAD had cause to celebrate, after LIME got 24 points by beating COLOSSUS. COLOSSUS certainly had a baffled expression on his face, after losing to LIME and losing 13 points in the process! Those who hoped for a new Duelmaster were disappointed by CALLISTO, of VENUSIANS, who despite a 19-20-2 couldn't overcome LAPUR's Number 1. Word has it one team in LAPUR is taking speech lessons to try to bore their opponent to death. I'll bet it works. So much to report, so little time! Perhaps the warriors of METAL MINCERS should take up some hobbies, as they are the most avoided team... As a woman of good breeding scorns the "warriors" of X-MEN, so did that sorry team shy from METAL MINCERS Is it charming personality? Conversational abilities? Good oral hygiene? Whatever it is, COPPER COMPACTER is the most challenged warrior. As a confidence booster, CUDDLE ME TENDER challenged RED BULL, down 24 points. Do you also slay vicious rodents in your spare time, CUDDLE ME TENDER? Yes, Virginia, sometimes the little guy wins, as RED BULL proved, beating 24 point higher CUDDLE ME TENDER. Them's the breaks, COPPER COMPACTER. Expecting fair challenges from BOHICA is evidently too much to ask. NEEDS SALT bested COPPER COMPACTER. The whole thing leaves a bitter memory. Take heed LAPUR, of the unprincipled action of RED HOT CHILI. By challenging VINDOCOMUS, 19 points below her, RED HOT CHILI besmirches the noble art of dueling. RED HOT CHILI defeated VINDOCOMUS with a point difference of 19. So this is what LAPUR calls a duel. This will make an interesting tale. Word has it HIMEKO suffered a romantic setback. Note how she challenged BISHOP, 27 points hers senior. The gods smiled upon HIMEKO, in hers upset fight against BISHOP. HIMEKO gets a win, 19 points, and a free drink on me. (Next week, OK?) The moving sword slashes, and having slashed, moves on... Fair play must not be a credo of FORCE OF NATURE, as A.A. SHOCK permanently removed PUFFY SCRUFF of BOHICA from the competition in a mismatched fight. Oh hard! that to strike a flame, the match itself must needs be wasting! Do not think spyreporting in LAPUR is the highlight of my life. Keep those sands bloody and the buzzards fat! Can anything compare to the pleasure of writing Spyreports for LAPUR?
