Math stared at it for a long moment, then made the last step, the one that would take him through. It was like pushing through a curtain, or a soft wall. He felt it clinging to his face and hands, blocking his breath, and it was like thick syrup so that he moved as through deep water. The taste of it was fear, and it was cold as death. If they had to travel far like this--he didn't think he would survive it. One difficult step. Two. He never thought of turning back, knew without asking that wouldn't work. Three. It was impossible to hold some course here in smothering darkness, impossible to know if anyone was ahead of him still. Four. Amazing that the horse was so steady. Five-- Torchlight, so bright after the darkness that it was blinding. Malcorn, Uncle Wolf, the Dark Stranger, and their mounts. Malcorn and Wolf held torches. Math gasped in relief. The others would see fear's shadow still on his face, but he didn't care. Each of those three was in some way prepared for--if not this, things of a similar nature. Mage Lord, for Malcorn was surely that now, shaman, and... whatever the Stranger was. Whereas he, Math op Owain, was just an ordinary man. Still, he was not a total coward, and he could at least assume the mask of courage. He took a careful breath and looked around. A cave, or more precisely a tunnel. The rock of the walls was rough and black and drank the torchlight, but the floor was smooth and looked like some kind of tiles or paving stones. Red. Even, blood red. Not a pleasant image, but at least there WAS a floor. It sloped downward ahead of them. Math did not look behind. He had a feeling the 'doorway' through which they'd come was gone or closed and would rather not know that definitely. Lord Malcorn met his eyes and nodded once. Math read a wordless message of approval and straightened his back, squared his shoulders. When Malcorn led the way down the tunnel, Math was ready to follow. They seemed to be walking for a long time, hours maybe. Math would have sworn to that, except... the torches didn't burn away. The possibility that only minutes had passed since they entered this tunnel--no, he wouldn't believe that. Maybe not hours, but more than a few minutes. Time was twisted here, that had to be the answer. Something ahead. At first he couldn't make out what, the torchlight didn't reach far, and besides, it didn't make sense. A bridge, in this cave? The floor ahead went from red to black, which must be a river or, well, something along that line. With a bridge over it. A stone arch, it looked like, maybe four feet wide, without railings or even curbs at the edges. Something on the bridge, nearer this end than the center. How many times did an adventure begin with monsters guarding the only way to get somewhere? He had a bad feeling about this--a fight on that narrow bridge? Disaster waiting to happen. + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ Edge of Night #35 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ + Lord Malcorn didn't hesitate, leading them straight to the beginning of the bridge. Math looked at the river uneasily. Its nature was clear once they were close to it. Though it was dark and glassy smooth, he could see things--he didn't know what things and didn't want to--carried along by the current just under the surface. Carried along fast. And it exhaled dampness, with curling wisps of mist drifting above the water, and every solid thing in sight dripping moisture. The cold made his bones ache. The guardian of the span stepped closer to them, giving him a clearer view of it than he would have liked. Part human or maybe ape, part mastiff with jaws that could bite a man's head off, and a hint of something demonic as well. Its eyes glowed red. Math found himself unable to laugh at the cliche. And, after all, what was a cliche except something that had been right over and over again? It had claws to go with its fangs, and just in case that wasn't enough, carried a pole-arm with a spearhead on the end and couple of axe blades. Anything crossing that bridge would have to deal with the guardian somehow. And it sure looked like Lord Malcorn meant to cross the bridge. Malcorn stopped right at the foot of the bridge, where another step would put him on the span. He said something, his voice like thunder. Math hadn't expected to understand it, but some of the words came clearly. Something about mutual respect between defenders, and compelling needs, and ancient agreements. The words rolled around in his head like dice in a cup, and he swayed where he stood. Uncle Wolf was in front of him suddenly, holding a loosely woven cloth bag over his nose and mouth. Math staggered and tried to bat it away. "Breathe!" the shaman ordered. The gladiator breathed, and air came through the cloth, scented with juniper. He coughed and breathed in again. Blinked as his head cleared. "What...?" "The vapors from the water will put you to sleep if you aren't prepared," Wolf said. "My apologies, I had forgotten that you would have no defense against them such as the rest of us do. Keep the juniper, breathe only through it until I tell you differently." Math nodded, holding the bag of juniper in place. "What about the horses?" "It won't affect them, they aren't sufficiently self-conscious." The old shaman turned back to watch the negotiation at the bridge. Malcorn produced a large coin and held it up. Math supposed it was gold, but it looked darker and redder, more like copper or even bronze. The bridge guardian reached out to touch it but didn't grip the coin yet. It spoke in a growling voice. "You and yours may pass by this token. But only one way. No return across the bridge!" "That is the agreement," Malcorn said. "We will abide by it." He laid the coin in the guardian's hand. The guardian took it and bowed low, then stepped to the side. Off the bridge. Math blinked and pressed the juniper closer to his face. It looked like the guardian was standing in mid-air above the river! Malcorn bowed in return, not so low, maybe, but with obvious respect, and led his horse onto the bridge. Wolf nudged the reluctant Dark Stranger forward, followed it, and beckoned to Math to bring up the rear. * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===FREE BLADES REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 9 ZUKAL (turn 616): HEMPEN JIG of SEA DOGS (One-Armed Bandit, mgr.) Know me for who I am, Zontani Sharp Eyes, Spymaster extraordinaire of all Alastari. Former top team STREET WALKERS was unseated this week as WILL DUEL 4 MEAD moved up from 2nd ranking to take the top spot with a 2-2-0 record for the round. Fortune did not smile upon CARDOW HUNTERS this time out who this turn suffered a fall into 7th position in the wake of a 2-3-0 round. Warriors--remember that glory waits always around the corner! Witness how this week EQUESTORS went 3-2-0 to move up 3 in the rankings. Did only my eyes note the 4-1-0 record which METAL MINCERS managed to post this round? I don't doubt that such a record will draw challengers! ELVIRA MADIGAN caught the eye of many in the gladiatorial commission as she skillfully bested RED BULL and was awarded 25 points in recognition. In one of the week's more notable duels, ELVIRA MADIGAN put down RED BULL, causing him to lose 23 points of recognition in the process. Most watched of the fights this week, the spotlight was on WYVERN as he bore arms against the Dark Arena Challenge of reigning Duelmaster DAISY CHAINS. Not for nothing has DAISY CHAINS in the past laid claim to the Duelmaster's throne, and this week she's proven hers combat skill yet again. No confirmation, but my sources claim that the top team has gained their position using magical aids. Charmed weapons perhaps? But come now, let us look deeper into the maze of contention and crossed blades that is city LAPUR. LAPUR, city of gladiators! Mighty among the names of thy guilds is STREET WALKERS, a guild shunned and avoided by many in the weekly duels. Methinks more than a few here could name the guild it was that spent the better part of last week avoiding STREET WALKERS. Indeed it was WILL DUEL 4 MEAD. Mighty fighters cannot but expect competition from those below. STARRY NITE take warning! You have more than a few enemies in LAPUR. NEEDS SALT must really be harboring a grudge against the VENUSIANS guild! Merciless, 26 challenged down ILLYRIA points this week to duel with he. All the city knows the duel went in favor of NEEDS SALT. I shall not fail to spread the word in other cities of this "mighty" victory. A match that raised a few eyebrows at the games this week, it seems that COPPER COMPACTER posted a challenge against the more highly recognized LITERNIUS. The results, you ask? Well, the firebrand COPPER COMPACTER beat LITERNIUS. Remember warriors, this is the discipline of steel. What warrior does not hone his years, impatiently waiting for the moment of his foe's mortality? Strange what qualities come forth in the face of certain doom. DAISY CHAINS has the town astir with the news of hers Dark Arena victory! A.A. SHOCK must hold silent, for this week he was humbled in the arena by a successful Bloodfeud won by RED HOT CHILI of BOHICA. Hail RED HOT CHILI for thy victory! Some say a warrior is judged by the way he bears arms. One thing is sure, better a dagger in hand then a sword on the belt! The girls are as pretty in LAPUR as ever I remembered them....and the fighters as ugly! Don't let your reputation slip! Sadly warriors, now longer can I keep thy company nor savor the ale of thy fine city. Depart I must and soon! Till we meet again, remember: a turtle walks slow, hides head in a shell, and harms no one; a lion runs to slay its prey.-- Zontani Sharp Eyes DUELMASTER W L K POINTS TEAM NAME ELVIRA MADIGAN 3366 14 8 1 108 TRAIL OF TEARS (229) CHALLENGER CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME NEEDS SALT 5206 11 2 0 101 BOHICA (449) MAD DOG 5125 17 13 0 93 CARDOW HUNTERS (359) -LIME 5178 11 3 0 92 WILL DUEL 4 MEAD (282) CALLISTO 5036 20 21 2 91 VENUSIANS (321) COLOSSUS 556 17 21 4 91 X-MEN (78) CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME LITERNIUS 5049 17 23 1 89 EQUESTORS (158) COPPER COMPACTER 5092 15 12 0 84 METAL MINCERS (256) GLAUCO 5102 18 15 1 82 EQUESTORS (158) ATRIA 5101 18 15 1 81 VENUSIANS (321) RED HOT CHILI 5202 9 4 0 78 BOHICA (449) A.A. Aye. -- Oremaster Good luck to all at The Mailer. -- Ora Cleveland? Cleveland?! -- The Metal Mincers Bohica -- Spank away for the red sands shall tell the tails. When I need feel threatened by pubescent pups I will buy a leash for you. Keep to yours and you will do fine. -- Tiffinal Red Hot Chili -- Black Kelts do not down challenge even one point except in BloodFeuds. If you wish another Spanking feel free to up-challenge though I know it contradicts your nature. -- John Courage Smack -- Sword fighting without weapons is well it's Weird. -- White Robe Faylin O'comma -- Madam some decorum please. -- White Robe Owsly -- The name is the name. It has caused man we feel blessed. Other than that it is but a name. -- Purple Sage RoadKill -- I do hope you choose to open a business in the Market Square. I hope it creates some lively shared story lines. -- Sincerely Purple Sage All -- To reaffirm if you want to rent space in the market even if you're not a story writer just having a business there and describing it will lend depth and flavor to others stories. Having points of reference that the reader is connected to makes a better story for me at least. Pure self-interest. -- Sincerely Purple Sage "Food for Thought Builds better brains" Copper -- With your experience (more than double my FE), I thought you'd be able to handle a little salt. Boy, was I wrong! -- Needs Salt Congrats to Red Bull and Daisy Chains! Roadkill -- Yeah, Scrappy Doo works. Although, based on my play recently, I think Crappy Doo would be more appropriate! -- The Manager Formally Known As Scruffy Fine Citizens of Lapur -- Due to multiple issues (such as RSI's lack of response into an input error inquiry and requests for roll ups, among other things) Scruffy's motivation for the game has dwindled and he is going to take a break after next turn. Moving the office, immediately followed by the tourney, has created a few glitches. All -- Sorry I had comments all written for last turn, but the website went down before I could submit them. Rather than just toss good material I figure I post them anyways with some new ones. -- Sporkis The website problem was part of the whole mess noted in the comment above. Sorry about that. It drove me nuts, too. -- the Scribe, now also Ed. Last Turn's comments, Tiffinal -- You know I've seen this little 'free library' of yours recently. A whole three books by a pissing troff. Dueling for Dummies preschool edition with the subtitle "I can duel, so can you.", Big Time Real Estate with No Money Down by B.M.Ponzi, and Harry Porker and the Sorcerer's Bone. I hear that one is a pop up. You know if your warriors are having a hard time overcoming their dyslexia, maybe you should start recruiting the kids who ride the short cart to school instead of the ones that pull it. Cause Greywand only knows your drying up Stormfront's talent pool. -- Sporkis P.S. "Food for Thought Builds better brains"... Uh huh, what's next a reissue of the whiffle bat called the ShamPow!? P.P.S. Ahhhh it's good to be back. :) Duelmasters for Dummies got good reviews. Mad Dog -- I can't promise I won't. *drool* Maho... *drool* -- Himeko Colossus -- You're fast, smart, and cheap. Oh wait, that's me. Ha ha! -- Lime Silver Saw -- Silviez youz havz somez explaingz toz doz. Hack! *Cough* Sorry it was hang with your guild elders day. Guess who I got stuck with. Don't think I don't know what you were trying to do there. Don't let the record fool you, I'm full of surprises. That zero just means that I'm a conservative young lady. Don't make loosen my morals. -- Luna White Robe -- I'm a teacher of life lessons, not skills. Guess what yours was. -- Yuri Luhar -- No. Himeko found you asleep at the bar and decided to tatoo a picture of a dagger on you for kicks. I said you would be able to tell the difference. Guess I lost that bet. -- Yuri P.S. I think thats permanent. A penniless lord?!? These "the day after" wake up calls are getting worse and worse. I need to cut back on the booze. -- Yuri Faylin O'Comma -- Faylin or failing? I'm sorry you look like someone I just made eat the arena sand. The nite is short and so is my dance card. Stalking is so last week. -- Revy Bishop -- I'm sorry I was staring at a butterfly. Were you trying to tell me something? Maho. -- Himeko This turn's comments Congrads to Daisy and Red Bull. Good bye, so long, farewell. Best of luck in your future. That is if your respective owners determine you have one. :) -- Sporkis Sage -- Word around the owner's box is you're crying a little foul. Well I sent a new playmate for Robe but when they got there it was already in the sandbox with someone else. I could go on, on how this was pulled off, but I won't. I figured well then a repeat lesson was in order. Besides, you're old school you should know all is fair in love, war, and blood feuds. Count your blessings, I'm being nice. -- Sporkis Bohica -- And they say we drink to much. -- Will Duel 4 Mead (sitting back to watch the fireworks) Roadkill -- Thanks, but why do I get the feeling that the smile and the hand shake is just so I won't see whatever is weighing down my coattails this turn. -- Sporkis Because you have a suspicious mind? White Robe -- *sigh* I'm getting really tired of teaching these remedial classes. -- Yuri Sonte Hinge -- Left Buttocks, Chest, Groin, Left Elbow, Right Arm, Right Buttocks. Well the bad news is I forgot to hit your head. The good news is I remember to hit you everywhere else. Yay for me. -- Revy Solar Radiation -- I get the strange feeling that match could have easily gone the other way. Well fought none the less. -- Luna P.S. The audience wasn't screaming in approval at your defeat. I hear they were giving out free mice on a stick during our match. The ones with onions are the best. Copper Compacter -- Just sending a message from my boss to yours. Hoped it was received well. I pride myself on delivery in a timely manner. -- Lime Smack O'Malley -- Smack, smack, sugar smack. Give me a smack and I'll smack you back jack... Uhh, wait a minute, I forgotto smack you back, didn't I? Ooooo...that why I lost. Maho. -- Himeko A.A. Shock -- Yep, shocking, sure enough. I'd no idea I was so close to graduating, and I figure it must be political points that put me over the edge. Let me buy you a drink by way of celebration, since "you were there" when it happened. -- Red Bull Atria -- I hope you appreciate being an orc. Not that I would have chosen to be an orc if there were other options, but I'd sure rather be an orc than a golem. There are times when I forget about the whole golem thing, and then other times when it comes over me suddenly and feels really WEIRD. Unfortunately, it happened just as that fight began, and it screws up my whole fighting approach. Or something does. Whatever. Good, fast work. -- Cloudshadow Colossus -- If I'm supposed to be impressed with your size, well, how about if we go for something else, instead. Maybe I can be impressed by your teeth or something. After all, orcs have impressive tusks. Why, I've known people who, er, well, they mount orc tusks on their.... Wait, what's this "the hoods of their cars" bit? What cars? What hoods? I mean, I know what hoods are, but how would you mount tusks on 'em? Maybe we should discontinue this personal while I get my foot out of my mouth. -- Mad Dog Salamander -- Odd, you don't LOOK like a lizard. -- Horn Rock Colossus -- Good fight. -- Mad Dog Raw -- Like sushi? I prefer mine cooked, thanks just the same. -- Waterstone Moderate/low? I never did "moderate/low" in my life, and I'm not about to start now. -- Red Bull Cuddles -- Listen, I've got some free time now, how about if we try the cuddling thing again? -- Red Bull Our congratulations to Daisy Chains. -- Jorja and the Cardow Hunters Solar Radiation - I am impressed with your ability to soak up knowledge. - Luhar the Tutor Smack O'Malley -- Oh sure pummel me with a tree stump and be a stingy arse sharing your knowledge. -- Gilan the Discontent Iron Impacter -- Okay, tin man you proved you have a heart. -- Rindel the Subdued Sin Darella -- Why does it not surprise me that you went straight for my head. -- Nearly Headless Jailyn You're psychic? Dark Uncle -- Nice job breaking my weapon, I need to have a serious talk with my weapon smith and if I ever find out who is gluing my dagger into its sheath, they are dead! I tell you...D E A D...DEAD!!! -- Luhar the Furious Knight of Pain -- The only pain I felt was to my buttocks. Hmmm does that make you the knight of my arse. -- Gilan the Ironic Bookaboutbirds -- What a name. You are one tough son of a giant too. -- Rindel Faylin O'Comma -- Sorry ma'lady, I lost my head in the middle of combat. You are not a wimp. Nor do I wish to rip your face off. -- Jailyn the Remorseful Daisy Chains and Red Bull -- The Word has Gone Out to the Basic arenas: we are to pull up our socks or whatever and resume the Gifts for Graduating Gladiators, lands or whatever. Well, fine, people always hand me impossible jobs, I just LIVE for impossible jobs, right. Like I NEED another impossible job. But do they offer me extra pay? Nah, of course not. I just hope the Great Bird of the Galaxy makes a nuisance on their heads. But to the point, lands? Who's got lands to give away? Have you SEEN real estate prices lately? Totally irrational. Suggest something else, and I'll see if I can make it happen. -- Chetam, Odd-Job Man for Lapur Arena LAST WEEK'S FIGHTS DAISY CHAINS viciously butchered WYVERN in a 2 minute bloody Dark Arena fight.
