The Silent Place near Zuwayza:
Blackwind followed the two demons on a circuit of the enclosure, conscious of
and grateful for Redfox and Agro at his back. Thrashing through underbrush which he
mostly couldn't see now that it was full dark. Getting soaked, because it must have
rained recently and everything was dripping. Slapping at bugs. The demons didn't
seem to be having these problems, not even the one with the underbrush. Life was so
unfair!
"There!" The voice was Triforos's, from well ahead of them. The junior demon
must be doing scout duty. "A flaw in the barrier, as though it has been opened and
then closed... ineptly."
The others moved to where it 'stood' and looked. The barrier itself was marked
by a fence of iron uprights with spear-head shaped finials and chains linking them at
top, middle, and bottom. Some rust, but less than Blackwind would have expected,
given the age of the place and the climate. Arhazul muttered something, and a
ghostly greenish light flowed from its hand to illuminate the scene. A broken chain,
one upright missing and the ones on either side of the gap bent away. A man could
squeeze through that hole, though not easily unless he was small and thin.
Agro stepped into the spill of light and knelt, touching the ground with a
clawed fingertip. In one place, another, a third. "There were two humans here," the
Croc said. "A man, a child." The finger tapped one track. "The child went through
the gap," the finger moved to one of the bent poles, "and scratched himself on the
iron here. If those within are like the others we have met, the blood-scent would
have drawn them. The tracks don't tell me what happened next."
"A pitiful burrow," Arhazul sneered. Then the demon sighed. "But it is what we
were looking for--what I expected to find. There was a scent to the barrier which
suggested a second breach, but I do not believe there is a third."
"So, we've found this, now what?" Blackwind asked. "Do we close it? Can we
close it?"
"Close, yes, but we cannot seal it. For that, the Malcorn is needed."
"Well, can we do something to keep it from being used until Lord Malcorn gets
here to do the sealing?"
The shape that was the demon Arhazul seemed to bristle. "Without the Malcorn--"
"Yes, I understood that. He's the only one who can seal it properly. But he
isn't HERE, and we need to do something NOW." If demons were always this much
trouble to deal with, it was a wonder to Blackwind that anyone bothered to summon
them.
The eyes of Triforos went hot and bright as flames, and it turned toward Arhazul
and said something quickly; the sounds were like fire and screams and flashing
blades, alien and menacing. It gestured at the humans.
When it finished, there was a silence that seemed long. Finally Arhazul said,
"It has been suggested that a temporary seal could be made--with blood. The Malcorn
has Words of Power, but blood will form a seal, also. And this one," it indicated
Redfox, "was prepared to give up its life-blood in order to end the predations of the
nighthunters. If we were to perform the proper sacrifice here... ah, no perhaps here
and at the main entrance both, yes, that would do it, why, then we might be able to
seal the barrier well enough until the Malcorn returns."
"Two sacrifices?" Redfox asked calmly. "Or one extended one?"
"There is no certainty," Arhazul admitted. "But I believe that the death of a
single strong warrior, if he surrenders his life willingly, would be sufficient to
hold the barrier closed until the Malcorn can attend to it."

DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
*Please stand by for a Out of Character Statement from your friends at Will Duel 4
Mead. We'll return you to regular schedule program of incoherent dribble next turn.*
Now let me state I'm not one above of blood feuding with the DM for a turn. The
whole point of a BF is to rub a dirt a little in the face of your opponent for his or
her actions. What better way to do that is to have the top warrior in the arena
smack 'em a around a little bit. Especially if the warrior who was lost was a really
good one. In Fluffy's case a very good one. Granted he was my first ripper ever, so
I was still bungling around trying to figure out how to run him hence his
performance. But his stats were nothing to laugh at, and the fact I knew from what I
calculated from his overview that he was bonus at least +3 in Attack, +3 in Defense,
and +2 in initiative. Yeah what does a ripper need with initiative, but the the
attack and defense bonus were nice.
Now if it were any other turn I probably be a little peeved that I lost this guy,
wouldn't you? But then I stumble across a conundrum of sorts. Here I have a AB who
I am desperately trying to get to graduation, which in Lapur as most of you know
isn't exactly the easiest thing to do. Her only requirement to graduate is she needs
the correct number of political points to do so. Now all of a sudden she's the DM
with a open BF beginning that turn. Do I have to point out the obvious elephant in
the room here? Stormy put your hand down I'll explain it to you later. So
Reptilicus got a fist full of DM last turn. And since Luna is still not quite there,
he'll probably get another helping this turn.
To his manager, you took that first shot like a champ. Sorry for the repeat. Take
the skill learns, be happy. I'll probably let it drop after this turn. Just be
grateful it worked out like it did. Otherwise I might be going for the kill. :)

SPY REPORT
Busy, busy, busy, lots of things happening in LAPUR this turn, and let's start
with a look at some of the teams. Now keep the taverns open late tonight, for there
are sorrows to drown for WILL DUEL 4 MEAD, whose 2-3-1 this turn dropped them by 7
into 12th. CARDOW HUNTERS stable has parlayed this turn's 3-2-0 into a 6 space move
up the rankings. This brings them up to 6th place. Good work, guys! The X-MEN
guild has had a 4-1-2 turn and deserves to be watched in the future. You never know
where this kind of thing can lead. And let's see, BUTTERFLY fought RINDEL and gained
25 points and contributed to CARDOW HUNTERS' 3-2-0. MISS FRIENDLY FIRE has lost to
LARD SPRINKLE, falling 16 points, while helping make STREET WALKERS a 2-3-0 turn.
The attempts to dethrone the Duelmaster have failed, and LUNA remains LAPUR's top
warrior for another turn. Can someone confirm a rumor for me? I hear the top team
makes their losing fighters do dishes at The Warty Toad until they win. Maybe?
The crowd's roar, the smell of iron and leather, mixed with sweat, what more
could a warrior ask of life? Well, besides that. I also notice that the STREET
WALKERS stable was the most avoided team this turn. Come on LAPUR, what are you
afraid of? And guess who avoided STREET WALKERS stable the most? Believe it or not,
it was CLAN CROW. Anyone surprised? The most challenged warrior this turn was
TREKKERS' warrior CAPTAIN KIRK. More fighters challenged him than challenged the
Duelmaster! In a brave attempt, MAKADOS from PHILANTHROPISTS challenged up 22 points
to fight FELICIA from the STREET WALKERS stable. MAKADOS perhaps got his just
desserts, seeing as he beat FELICIA and ended up with 110 recognition points.
A coward dies a thousand deaths, a brave man only once. Wise men know this to
be true. LUHAR has departed LAPUR, leaving MID EARTH without their 12-12-3 warrior.
Question, just what was his team doing at the taverns last night? BLACK KELTS has
lost RED SQUIRREL to the arena in the sky, but they don't seem to be worried. What
do you expect from 3-7-1? Is it really true that LAPUR has more dishwashers per
capita that fighters? Just thought I'd ask...
Remember, blood on the purple robe does not change it from a purple robe. Dare
to fight bravely. It's been nice chatting with you, until we meet again, keep your
swords sharp and your hammers heavy. Until the sun next rises and my pen sets to
paper-- Alarond the Scribe

PERSONAL ADS
Makados -- Just how philanthropic was that?! You should have given it to me. --
Copper Compacter
Mojo -- My cut shows that it is I who has the mojo. -- Chrome Cutter
Luna -- You again. Congrats. You looked awfully good in The Half-Blood Prince. We
look for more good things from you in the next. -- Ora and Oremaster
Needs Salt -- Congrats on the invite. Mighty fine record, we say! -- Ora and
Oremaster
Street Walkers gotta 57 pointers. Criminy! Me borgs bea 'voidin. Aye. -- Oremaster
Glauco -- I could say I challenged you because you were ranked above me and not an
aimed blow, but to be honest I missed your company. -- Felicia
Cloudshadow -- Talk about deja-vu!!!! The second turn in a row I avoid you like the
plague, the second turn in a row I still managed to get matched up against you, and
the second time you completely kick my butt. That's it, I quit. I'm done with this
career and am going to move on to bigger and better things. The arenamaster looks
like he has a cushy job, maybe I'll run for office. -- Nailin' Palin
Encolpius -- In light of what the newsletter may have said, I was not seeking your
death, I'm just trying to make friends. -- Miss Friendly Fire
Jailyn -- Now that was a surprise! Something tells me next time we meet you might
try to pull a Bobby Brown on me. -- Whip Me Houston
Libra -- We really have to stop meeting like this. -- Bimbo Slice
Scruffy Puff and Needs Salt -- Congrats on the invite, the first one is always
special, well done. -- Roadkill
Luna -- Now why would you tell the Mincers about the contract to give Compacter some
losses??? I'm not denying it, mind you... -- Lady Protector Mad Dog Montana
Luna the Spirit Whale -- Yes, I know your true identity. But what most don't know is
"Spirit Whale" is actually you wishing your butt wasn't so big. Your butt's so big
it's on both sides of the family. Your butt's so big when you fall backwards your
rock yourself to sleep tring to get back up. Your butt's so big your team jogs
around it for exercise. Your butt's so big you sat on a rainbow and made Skittles.
Your butt's so big that when God said "Let there be Light", he told you to move you
fat ass out of the way. -- Felicia
Deep Thought -- That's a tough loss. Hope he does well in the upcoming tourney. --
Roadkill
Horn Rock -- Hmmm seems like there is one too many rocks. -- Luhar F. Gump
Julianus -- Unlucky match up for me, well fought. -- Rindel the Unfortunate
Whip Me Houtson -- My name isn't spanky! -- Jailyn the Spanked
Reptilicus -- Thought I give you a fighting chance there in the beginning. Then I
got bored. Sorry even though it was a blood feud it's nothing personal. -- Luna
Chrome Cutter -- Well, if you couldn't beat a slasher who learns nothing but riposte.
Then you would have been buried next to me. -- Ghost of Revy
Salt -- One, I don't wear flip-flops. Two, afterward where I did deposit my footwear
you can keep them. I don't think I want 'em back. -- Luna
Horn Rock -- My trainer was someone named Corona, not Lemon. -- Lime
Needs Salt -- Figure I give you a pity win since little sis gave you such a whupping
last turn. -- Lime
Akuma -- Just a friendly challenge as a welcome back to Lapur for you and Black
Samurai team. Always good to see a team back. -- Will Duel 4 Mead
Before we forget again. Congrads to Liternius and Needs Salt on their invites. --
Will Duel 4 Mead
Red Hot Chili -- The finest kind. -- Mad Dog
The Bride -- You're saying that brides are "creatures"? I'm not getting this. --
Waterstone
The Blob -- Ah, now that one I did see. Black and white, Steve McQueen, yes? Those
were the good old days, sure enough--youth. I didn't appreciate it when I had it. --
Jorja, usurping Butterfly's response
Luhar -- How about, instead of Mid Earth, you be from Mid Sand? -- Horn Rock
P.S. Nah, given the difference in our ranking and experience, you were fine.
Nailin' Palin -- Think of me as a hammer, hmm? -- Cloudshadow
P.S. From small beginnings, big bruises grow.
Luna -- Enjoyed the column. -- Jorja, Cardow Hunters
Our congratulations to Needs Salt. -- Jorja and the Cardow Hunters
We salute Lapur's tourney participants, double salute for those who died making the
effort. -- Jorja and the Cardow Hunters
Liternius -- So I'm two weeks late, sue me if you care that much. We don't have
lands to give away, who has or can afford lands? But I could maybe find you a good
horse. You know the kind of thing, eh, your title is good if you're going north, but
might be questioned if you're going south. Not that I stole it, I wouldn't do such a
thing as that. But some nomad from the south rode into town on it, fell out of the
saddle, and said, "Hide me!" So we did, just philanthropists, you know, but we took
the horse in payment. -- Chetam, odd-job ma for Lapur arena
Needs Salt -- Ah... how about a ticket to Dullens, give you a chance to visit the
salt beds near there? I'm told they're scenic, and they're sort of on the way to the
Isle. -- Chetam
