Open Hand Introduction

"Tahmores, admit it, you're lost! Again!" Adara's foul mood was more due to her
younger brother's constant insistence on leading than actual weariness.
"I'm not lost," Tahmore's grinned, "I just don't want to deprive anyone in this
fair city to view the splendor that is a Raltuman! We're exotic this far south you
know."
"We've been walking so long, I think everyone in the city has seen ya!" Bahram,
whose age and weight surpassed his companions, replied with true weariness. "Just
show me to the pub with the cheapest ale and the easiest women! I haven't got my
drunk on since you four dragged me away from that pub in Sibikhas!"
"Dragged you? And here I thought your desire for me lured you out of that bore
of a town," Shirin teased in mock offense. "And I felt so special," she added with a
sniffle.
Bahram cocked an eyebrow at the attractive Kannari, "Lured me straight into a
bar brawl you mean. Anyway, I am tired of working the mines of Rodeki ya vixen."
Interrupting their banter, Javed suggests, "A local tavern would be a good place
to sit and decide our next move, besides--I think a drink would suit us all."
Adara takes the lead and approaches a middle-aged gentleman who appears to be
watching a pair of street urchins working a crowd with a game of chance. "You sir,
where might we find someplace to wet our parched throats?"
Looking over the motley group that has approached him, the stranger smiles,
"Well, well, what have we here? Don't tell me... you're wandering circus performers!
I tell you what, you perform a trick for me and I'll show you to a nice tavern.
Ready... Gulp!"
And before he could say "Go" Tahmores has his dagger ready to shave the skin off
the stranger's adam's apple. "How about I make your tongue disappear!?! How's that
for a trick, old man!"
"Let him be, Tahmores!" orders Adara and looking around and adds in a low voice,
"You're attacting attention, as usual."
Tahmores sheathes his dagger while the stranger says, "Young gladiators... hmph!
All the same. So full of bravado, but with no manners and no sense of humor! Follow
me and pay attention and please call me Senchin." Leading the group through a
confusing series of turns Senchin explains to the group, "I've been waiting for the
likes of you--a spirited group of fighters with as much brains as brawn, untouched by
the politics of the arena and unclaimed by the so-called mega-managers. Fools
setting up franchises all over Alastari, they're even starting to set up their own
mini-malls! You need someone to guide you, to introduce to the right people, to show
you the ropes. I've been in Lapur my whole life, there are fortunes to be won and
lost, if you know what I mean."
Upon reaching the pub, Senchin guides them to an empty table near the middle of
the main room and orders a round of mead for the table. "And what is the price of
this experience?" Shirin says suspiciously, looking uncomfortable with her back to
the room.
"From the looks of ya, you don't go much to offer, no offense. And if you think
you're going to find your fortune fighting in the arena, well, you're not as bright
as I thought. There are ways to make money from the fights, but fighting is the
worst way to earn it."
While the others were leaning in to hear more about the riches they might make,
Javed found himself losing his patience with this stranger. "You talk much and say
little, get to the point, before Tahmores finishes what he started out on the
street."
"Ah, a true Convincian, never held a coin he didn't break his back for. All
right, here it is, I want to manage your team. I can arrange for your training, find
you some place to stay, and help you 'invest' your winnings. In exchange we share
the rewards equally. If ever you feel my services are no longer... profitable...
we'll split our assets and go our separate ways. At the moment, it appears you have
little to lose. As a token of good measure, the drinks are on me."
"That's good enough for me!" Bahram cheerily raises his flask.
Adara, speaking for the team adds, "If your experience is as vast as your words
then the Open Hand has a new manager."
Tahmores grins and says, "Just remember, my name comes first on the roster."
Shirin just smiles and looks knowingly at their new manager, while Javed buries
his displeasure in his glass.
Senchin rises from his seat and whispers, "Now, follow my lead and we'll see if
we can't get these drinks paid for." Senchin raises his glass and loudly toasts. "To
the Open Hand, the newest team in Lapur! May they find fame, fortune, and
immortality on the sands of fate! Welcome the Open Hand!! HUZZAH!!!"
The warriors raise their mugs, "HUZZAH!!!"
The noise attracts the attention of the bar patrons and one warrior in
particular strides over the table, sizes up the newly assembled stable and
chuckles... "Heh, heh, more fodder for Dark Arena, eh? Always good have fresh meat
to sharpen blades on." Throwing a couple marks in the middle of the table, "Here, I
buy your last drink, Hah! Not too proud to open your hand to a hand-out are you!"
Turning to his comrades he laughs, "HA! Did you hear that, I make joke of their name,
Ha!" at that he struts back over to his table.
Shirin, impressed by the way Senchin arranged the free drinks looks to Senchin
and says, "Well done. And who might that bundle of fun be?"
"That my friends... is the Duelmaster."

Later that night, while stumbling to Senchin's shack on the financially-
challenged side of town, Tahmores asks, "Hey Senchin! Wanna go wenchin! Ha! No,
but serisly, Wha'sa dark areena? Souns spooky."
Rolling his eyes, Senchin looks at the sky and says, "I should have asked for
more."

Elsewhere:

The old shaman Wolf half-carried Lord Malcorn to the far bank of the underground
river. Math op Owain followed with the horses, trying not to look down. Whatever
flowed under narrow bridge was nothing for a mortal to stare at. He batted at the
swirling vapors with one hand. Nothing for a mortal to breathe, either, he was sure.
And the bridge seemed to be going on forever, seemed a lot longer than it had
looked from the bank behind them. Math had known roads like that, roads between
towns that were no more than ten miles apart, and it took hours, it took DAYS to
cover that distance. It was probably some kind of magic, some kind of wrinkle in
either space or time. The sort of thing you put up with because you had no real
choice, but... by all the gods, not HERE.
His horse nudged him forward, hard, which forced him to open his eyes. When had
he shut them? And on that bridge...! But, oh blessedness, the end of the bridge was
in front of him. One step, maybe two, and he would have... well, the ledge beyond
was stone and seemed the same as the stone of the bridge, but at least there was no
visible mysterious river beneath it. Math stepped off the bridge and sighed with
relief. If there's been a single blade of mortal grass, he would have kissed.
Math shook himself and turned to Uncle Wolf. "What happened back there?"
The old shaman snorted. "The Stranger lost its nerve."
"There was more to it than--"
"Of course there was, but we may never know the details," Malcorn said. "The
Stranger was guilty of something and feared discovery and punishment. If it had
cooperated, I would have argued for clemency before the High Powers, but... it is
gone now. Wholly gone. None return from the Hounds."
Math turned his back on the river. He didn't want to look at it or think about
the 'hounds' that had condensed in the steam. "What do we do now?"
"We go on. Having the Stranger with us might have made the journey easier, but
we can do without. We must," Lord Malcorn said. "I must close the Door that was
opened in Kurukar, and I will need the two of you to guard my back while I do it."

In the Spirit Land:

Necroma released her hold on Cloudrider and stepped back, puzzled. More than
puzzled. "When did you become a woman?" she asked.
He--she--looked down, blushing. "It just happened."
"Probably due to a death-and-resurrection in the Living World," Young Joan
added.
     "It's confusing," Cloudrider muttered.
"It'll take some getting used to," Necroma agreed. Privately, she regretted the
disappearance of Cloudrider-as-young-man, but no point in moaning about it. "What
are we supposed to be doing?"
"Good question," Joan said. "We keep getting distracted, and everything that
has happened blurs what we should be remembering." She sighed and squinted at the
featureless horizon. After a moment, she said, "The problem was rampant necromancy."
Neither of them looked at Necroma, and she herself... wondered what she was
supposed to say. Yes, she was trained as a necromancer. She hadn't started to
practice yet, and she didn't think she'd be "rampant"--whatever that meant--when she
did. And she couldn't reasonably be expected to answer for all the other
necromancers in the world and what they did or did not do.
"Rampant necromancy," Joan repeated. "Violation of whatever Rules apply to the
movement of souls and the opening or closing of Gates to various parts of the Spirit
Lands. I think...." She sighed again. "I'm trying to think, anyway. We're
supposed to be identifying trouble points from this side, while others are supposed
to be trying to identify them from the other side. At least, I think that's what
we're supposed to be doing here." She looked at her two companions. "Any
suggestions?"
"You said the landscape here is suggestible, right? That it's shaped by our
expectations."
Joan and Necroma both looked at Cloudrider, surprised by the comment. Up to
now, he--now she--had been just a follower. An extra pair of hands, not someone who
had ideas.
"Yes," Necroma said. "That's what I was taught. Some parts of the Spirit Land
are, well, fixed, but others aren't."
Cloudrider frowned at the horizon, a ridge not far away. "I expect we'll find
the center of the problem right over that ridge."
Young Joan threw up her hands as though to stop him. Her. "Rider! You
shouldn't--"
A shiver passed over the land around them, not something they could see, just a
feeling in the back of the mind, maybe a ripple at the corner of an glance.
"That's done it," Necroma said. "We are really, truly in trouble here, because
the worst heart of the problem is right over that ridge. And if we turn around and
go the other way, it will be right over the other ridge. THINK before you say things
here!"
"I did think," Cloudrider said. "I thought I'd like to get this taken care of.
No more distractions."
Joan blew out her breathin a sigh. "I feel that, too,, but I wouldn't have
chosen to start with the worst part first. Still, it's done. Let's go."

                                      SPY REPORT

It's me, The Unknown Spymaster here with my bag to give you the news on last
week's fights. Say good-bye to BOHICA, as they are pushed from the coveted top team
spot by the STREET WALKERS stable. For every winner there is a loser. Speaking of
losers, lets take a look at BOHICA, who went down to 1st from 5th. Life is tough.
Coming up with a solid 4-1-0 outing, EQUESTORS has advanced 4 places in the rankings.
CLAN CROW is no joke as it posted a 4-1-0 week advancing from 8th place to 4th place.
Hey everybody, watch out for SMACK O'MALLEY, who flew up 20 points in the rankings
after mashing CLOUDSHADOW like a melon. Keep your eye on this guy. And falling like
a basher in the top ten was FELICIA, who dropped 23 points after a disappointing (to
say the least) bout with HORN ROCK. It's a proud day for the X-MEN stable, as their
warrior, COLOSSUS, ascended the Duelmaster's throne. An apple a day keeps the doctor
away, but an onion a day keeps T.P.s at bay.
Let's dig a little deeper into what's happening in the LAPUR arena. And hey,
kiddies, those of you who didn't avoid MID EARTH, please raise you hand. Wow. Does
LAPUR really have that many liars? Okay, so I may not be funny, but catch WILL DUEL
4 MEAD's act in the arena. Those acrobats seem to be fairly deft at running from MID
EARTH. Well just about everybody wants a piece of CLOUDSHADOW, who was this week's
most challenged warrior.
Death is kind of like a new puppy: he's always around wanting to play. (Ha
Zontani, how's that for a wise saying?). LIME defied all odds and slew RIVER MONSTER
in the Dark Arena. The only ones displeased were the buzzards, as RIVER MONSTER's
meat is notoriously tough. In the 'Oops, What Have I Done?' category, CAPTAIN KIRK
was mashed by LUCKY EIREANN, who let CAPTAIN KIRK know that killing members of CLAN
CROW is a no-no. Here's some advice: warriors with little wit and will may
encounter problems on the trail to the Isle.
Well, that wasn't too bad; Alarond told me that the people in LAPUR have no
sense of humor. Or maybe that they were senseless. Okay, so I may not be the
world's best comedian, but then you guys aren't the world's best warriors. See ya
next time I'm on this circuit!-- The Unknown Spymaster
