))) Open Hand On Death and Dying (((

In their hovel in the Old Eastern Ward the Open Hand mourns the loss of their
friend, and Adara's brother, Tahmores.
"He had so much energy." Shirin let out a small chuckle and continued,
"Remember when we first arrived in Lapur... he led us all around town just to
'parade' his arrival?"
"Aye, with a laugh the spread like fire," Bahram replied. "Remember when the
commission listed him as a dwarf?"
A smile crossed Senchin's face, "Even though, upon our first meeting he offered
to cut out my tongue, I found him was easy to like. His ..."
Adara couldn't stand it anymore. "HE! HIM! HIS! YOU TALK OF REMEMBERING BUT
ARE YOU AFRAID TO REMEMBER HIS NAME!!" Adara shouted, "WELL *HE* WAS MY BROTHER AND
*HIS* NAME WAS TAHMORES AND HE SHALL NOT BE FORGOTTEN!!" At that she broke down.
Adara was alone in blaming herself for allowing her younger brother to enter the
arena, but the pain was no less for it.
After a moment of silence, Javed, having known the duo since childhood, took
Adara's hands in his own, "I owe Tahmores more than anyone, for showing me a life
worth fighting for. We all called him friend and together we will all make sure his
name lives on."
Senchin cleared his throat, "There is a slim chance, involving great risk, that
we can do better than just his name." Confused expressions stared at Senchin. "The
commission is holding a tournament, on All Hallows Eve, for all warriors... alive...
or dead." Senchin pulled the announcement out and placed it before the group.
After glancing over the announcement Bahram spoke, "It says here that if
Tahmores goes 10 fights before losing 3 he will be given life, but, he had yet win
his first fight in the arena. Does he stand a chance?
After quickly studying the announcement, Adara defended Tahmores, "My brother
and I fought side by side in more scraps than can easily be counted, I would have no
other at my side before him. He was just, not allowed a chance to season. But, I
see here there is another way."
"Yes," Senchin began, "if one of you were to fight and become champion, you
would be given the opportunity... to bring our beloved Tahmores back from the dead!"
"Well, Javed and Bahram have yet to lose in the arena. Perhaps they will have
the best luck." Shirin said.
"It will take more than luck!" Senchin grinned wickedly. "We must test the
fates! We must attract the attention of powers greater than ourselves!! And so, we
must ALL travel to the RSI secret underground production facility!!!"

The Silent Place near Zuwayza:

They were three Lord Protectors with two gates to guard, the main one into--and
out of--the Silent Place, and the little hole in the barrier that some petty
necromancer had made on the far side. Three for two, it seemed logical that two of
them should stand at the main entrance to make sure none of the denizens of the place
got out, one at the rear where the passage was smaller, to do the same. They drew
straws, well, twigs broken off a nearby rowan bush, and Blackwind got the short one.
He tossed it up and caught it, grinning. The prospect of having something
positive and comprehensible to do was a pleasure. "The back way for me, then. That
works."
"Make sure you've got a full water bottle and enough food for at least a day,"
Redfox said. "No telling how long we'll have to do this--"
"Yes, mother!" The Malcornishman sighed. "Don't fuss, Redfox."
"Someone's got to!" He shook his head and sighed in turn. "No, okay. It's
just the..." he waved a hand vaguely. "Everything," he said finally. "Things after
things after things. It wears hard after a while."
"That is a warm-blood problem," Agro said. "My people have more patience."
"Then I'm glad you're here," Redfox said. "The longer I live, the less patience
I seem to have."
Blackwind looked at the two of them and shook his head. There were things going
on that he couldn't guess at, but apparently there were.... Hell, he didn't know.
So long as they could do the job, he didn't care, either. "Share the patience
between you, then," he said, "and I'll go watch the back." He patted the canteen at
his belt, which sloshed, and the comfortably full shoulder bag with its bread and
cheese and dried fruits, checked to make sure sword and dagger were ready to hand,
and left. To have a simple task and no confusing companions would make a pleasant
change.
He started walking around the perimeter of the Silent Place, checking the fence
for weak spots as he went.
"The one you call 'redfox' is... not himself?"
Blackwind jumped a little. He'd forgotten the demons were still around, hoped
they were not still around. He turned toward the deep, gravelly voice but saw
nothing he could identify in the darkness under the trees. "Arhazul? Why are you
still here? We can handle this guard job."
"No doubt you can, it is for this that the Grey Witch has you trained, is it
not? But we retain an interest and wish to see the matter settled. And... it has
been long since I walked in the world of flesh."
     "But--"
"I will do no harm to your kind. I do not wish to face the Malcorn with blood
guilt on my spirit. But tell me of your companion. His manner disturbs you."
"Well, yeah. It doesn't seem like him somehow."
"You fear he might be possessed or something of that nature? It is not so. But
there is a Death Mark on him, and this disturbs his soul." A pause. "It is perhaps,
why he was willing to give his life's blood to seal this place, for his death will
satisfy the Mark and it will leave."
     "And he'd be dead."
"Yes, but this--death--is something that comes for all of you humans in the end,
is it not? Even the Chosen of the Grey Witch."
Blackwind shrugged. He had heard other Lord Protectors speculating on this, but
the fact was that no one really knew. And 'in the end' could be a long time off.
"How did this 'death mark' come to happen?"
"An interesting question. The nighthunter that brought him and you to my plane
placed it there, but that creature could not have created it. The nighthunter must
have had dealings with someone of power other than myself, a demon possibly, or even
a powerful mortal. When this matter of the Silent Place has been finished, I shall
enjoy pursuing the question. It will be an interesting problem."
"This death mark would mean something more than just an ordinary death, wouldn't
it?" Blackwind guessed.
"But of course, or what would be the point of it? Something desires his soul,
that is what a Death Mark does, marks a soul as claimed in advance by one with the
power to take it." A rattling sound, which the gladiator realized, with a shock, was
Arhazul's way of laughing. "This happens more often than perhaps you realize. Many
humans walk under the sky with Death Marks, though seldom for long."
"Huh." Blackwind frowned. "We'll have to do something about that," he
muttered.
     "Now?"
There was something in the demon's voice, as though he was... no, the gladiator
couldn't put a finger on it. But it set the hairs up on the back of his neck. "Not
right this minute," he said, "but next. After this business about the Silent Place
is done."
"Ah. In that case, I suggest you bring your attention back to the matter in
hand, because things await your doing."
Blackwind looked along the line of iron spears linked by iron chains that formed
the boundary of the Silent Place. He was in sight of the small gap they'd found in
back. And in sight, now, of a feeble greenish-yellow light that moved around that
gap. His lips curled back in a wolf's grin. The necromancer who had dared to tamper
with this barrier, returned to profit from his work. All the profit he would get
would be his own death.

                                 DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
                             Notes from the arena champ.

Greeting Lapur,

While I didn't take the normal route as duelmaster, somehow I managed to spend at
least one turn on throne. As tradition with all Street Walker graduates, I will be
heading to the Dark Arena on my finally turn in this great city. Personally, I
wanted to give the Cardow Hunters the chance to avenge Waterstone, but Roadkill says
I must follow tradition.

To think that when I first fought in this city, women weren't allowed on the sands as
every fighter was referred as "he". I don't even have transcripts of my first 5
fights before someone ended my life on the sands. I was a last minute entry in the
tourney of dead (as Roadkill so kindly puts it..."I had one left over turn sheet, and
sent you in as a joke.") How's that as a confidence builder for ya!!!

He decided to experiment with my strategy and even though I faced 6 aimed blows in
the tourney I somehow managed to pull off an 8-3 record and get resurrected.

While some may refer to me as an offensive total parry, I consider myself more of a
total parry riposte. I relied on my riposte skills to win most of my fights, and
Roadkill used that strategy to my benefit. Surprisingly, I may get to fight in a
couple tourneys at the Freshman level, but I won't be fighting above that level.

So in case anyone wonders...or cares...here it goes:

11(+1)-17(+1)-6-17-13-9-13

Master ratings in parry and defense
Advanced Expert ratings in riposte and attack
Favorite weapon is the Quarterstaff (which I've never tried)
with Riposte techniques as my favorite learn.
oh yeah, favorite rhythm of LOW/LOW

That's pretty much it,

Lady Protector Felicia

                                      SPY REPORT

You elder fighters surely remember me. The younger ones may call me Olaf
Modeen. I return to LAPUR once again! Bein' on top is great while it lasts, CLAN
CROW. But how many friends do you have now? Hmmmph! I always thought BOHICA was an
over-rated team and they proved it with a 0-2-0! Ya gotta be quick on yer feet!
Keep your elbow off the table! Thrust! Block out the pain! METAL MINCERS is now
ranked 9th with a 2-0-0 turn. Some people say I ramble too much, I don't say
anything relevant. I repeat myself. I ramble. Well MID EARTH moved up 7, to 2nd.
What's with DEATHWIND FORGE? He actually beat STREET WALKERS' MISS FRIENDLY FIRE,
and walked away with 17 more points from the fight. Major screwup at STREET WALKERS.
MISS FRIENDLY FIRE lost 15 points to DEATHWIND FORGE. Some new strategies, perhaps?
Maybe MISS FRIENDLY FIRE will provide more easy wins... See how the Duelmaster Dark
Arena Challenged DARK ARENA's RIVER MONSTER? That sort of initiative is how he got
where he is now. RIVER MONSTER was reminded on the sands why FELICIA is Duelmaster.
Advice to fighters with a 1 will--give up fighting!
Speaking of cowardly avoiders and unfair challenges... The most avoided team
was EQUESTORS. Management must be dealin', as the boys at BOHICA ain't reelin'!
EQUESTORS' mad! What do people see in FEELIP O'BOOBAGAN? His 4-5-0? CLAN CROW
ain't talkin', but he's got 17 points. BUTTERFLY didn't quite know what to make of a
challenge she received from PAPPADEAUX of BOHICA, who is 18 points below her.
PAPPADEAUX perhaps got his just desserts, seeing as he was bested by BUTTERFLY and
ended up with 10 recognition points.
There have been some calls to lengthen the time limit. Do you want the fighters
to walk away, or not? Hmm... More surprises must remain in store for me, if FELICIA
can return from the Dark Arena. BIMBO SLICE proved too determined for LARD SPRINKLE.
LARD SPRINKLE was lucky to go in the ring, with 8-3-0 to hers credit. She will be
remembered. Is it my imagination, or are fighters getting younger every day? To die
so young, so gloriously!
Well, I'm pretty much through. You guys need to get back practicing. LAPUR is
a nice place to live, but I don't like to live in nice places. I don't want to
overstay my welcome...-- Olaf Modeen

Felicia -- What a purdy Duelmaster. Aye. -- Oremaster

Miss Friendly Fire -- How friendly was that? You burn me, cut me, and beat me? --
Silver Saw

Horn Rock - Let's toot your horn for the winner .... -- Copper Compacter

Beast -- Just thought you could use a shave and a haircut. Perhaps a little close,
but I think it's an improvement! -- Javed

Feelip O'Boobagan -- You looked a little sleepy, late night drinking? By the way, I
really wasn't trying to make it a death match, those arena announcers always
exaggerate for the benefit of the crowd. -- Adara

And sometimes the bookies put 'em up to it.

Lhisson -- Ow! My kidney! So you're targeting specific organs now? I've been
having a little trouble with my appendix, think you can help? -- Shirin

Thernys -- Honor and family demands we avenge our fallen brethren and so we will
exercise the right of blood feud but only until the first success. Although chances
are slim, Tahmores was favored among us and so the Open Hand will do all we can to
bring him back. Wish us luck in the upcoming tournament. -- Senchin, Mgr of the Open
Hand.

Smack O'Malley -- Gee, not only did you live up to your name but smacking me around,
you just had to pour salt on the wound by raping me for all those nice skills. --
Palin

Cardow Hunters -- Just when we Street Walkers have been behaving ourselves lately, I
go and do something stupid. Since I'm off to the Dark Arena feel free to carve up
one of the other ladies for retribution. -- Felicia

Deathwind Forge -- I wasn't expecting that challenge, but as long as you keep passing
on that kind knowledge, by all means continue to do so. -- Whip Me Houston

Silver Saw -- Silver Saw my scimitar, silver saw my strike, silver saw my desire, but
silver never saw my bite. -- Miss Friendly Fire

Commander Riker -- May the force be with you...oh wait, wrong show. -- Bimbo Slice

Felicia -- Ah... that means happy or something, doesn't it? Wish I could feel that
way about our fight. -- Ghost of Waterstone

Copper Compacter -- You were trying to squeeze blood from a penny? What good does it
do? A penny, yes, you can spend it, but the blood from a penny... I don't think you
can plant it and grow a money tree, you know. -- Horn Rock

Colossus -- Oh, well, no one can expect me to defeat a Lord Protector, right? --
Cloudshadow

The Venomous Concubine has no defense against a... Mad Dog

Lieutenant Worf -- Well, I didn't think I'd pull that one off, not being the long
distance type of runner, so to speak. -- Butterfly
