The Silent Place near Zuwayza:

Blackwind moved forward quietly, no need to announce his arrival with trumpets,
but he didn't sneak up on the necromancer. The man was clearly focused on his task
and not expecting any interruption. He'd lit half a dozen candles, short and thick,
with an unpleasant smell. His voice was a mutter of sounds not meant for a human's
throat, guttural and coughing. He was gesturing with a black blade that didn't
reflect light.
"An ambitious binding," Arhazul murmured in Blackwind's ear. "I do not believe
this person has the strength to hold it."
The gladiator drew his sword. "What will happen when I disrupt it?"
"That which he seeks to bind will be unrestrained." A pause. "It is unclear to
me what he grapples with, but I would suppose it is one of the creatures from within
the Silent Place. What else is there here?"
A thin cry of fear and pain. "No, no! Please don't make me do it again!"
The necromancer was holding a blade to the throat of a boy, naked and shivering
in the candlelight. Ten years old or so, Blackwind guessed. Skinny and terrified--
of the necromancer himself, but also of what he was expected to do. Crawl through
the opening into the Silent Place, probably, the gap in the fence was too narrow for
an adult to get through.
The necromancer snapped his fingers. The flame from one of the candles
elongated into a wire-thin whip of fire and lashed at the boy's bare legs. "Go," he
snarled, "or else die here to feed the spell!"
The boy wailed and edged closer to the iron bars of the fence. The candle-fire
lashed him again. He shrieked and crammed himself into the gap.
Blackwind stepped forward, sword up. "That's enough!"
The necromancer straightened and turned. Blackwind had a moment to think that
there was something WRONG about his face, and then the nearest candle flared into a
shield of flame between them. Then the mage turned back to his work, the pattern he
had scratched into the dirt, and began to chant again. And the boy was gone through
the gap in the fence.
Blackwind knew, as clearly as he sometimes knew it in an arena fight, that
things had slipped out of his control here. That if he didn't do something fast--
better a not-quite-right something than nothing at all--the situation would be
irretrievable. He took another half-step and drove his sword into the necromancer's
body.
Which offered no more resistance than mist.
He stumbled and went to one knee, then threw himself into a roll to the side as
the necromancer brought his black blade slashing downward.

                                 DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
                             Notes from the arena champ.

"How wonderful to be back," the Jugger thought to himself as the infuriated
innkeeper left his office. He had noticed that Von Grov had been getting
progressively worse as he rose through the ranks, but not in his wildest dreams had
he thought that it would get this bad this soon. Von Grov, true to habit, after
winning in the arena had decided to celebrate in one of those fancy places he liked
to frequent where he had drunk himself into a moody stupor before making unwanted
advances towards some way too young barmaid. This was not something new, and
generally not something that a few silvers couldn't take care of, but this time the
girl's fiance had been there. In an act of chivalry or stupidity depending on how
you look at it the silly boy had taken it upon himself to defend his fiance's
"honor." Von Grov would never be the Primus standout that he imagined that he had
the potential to be, but one does not become duelmaster of Lapur without enough skill
to cut a simple barback down to size without even breaking a sweat.
From what the Jugger could gather, what happened next was that Von Grov, instead
of simply knocking the boy unconscious or putting a few scars on him, had pinned him
to the floor, pulled his razor-sharp blade and with uncanny precision sliced belt,
britches and shirt off of the boy before he, roaring with laughter, proceeded to
"teach the boy a long overdue lesson" by spanking his bare backside over and over as
hard as he could manage with the flat of his blade. Those in the crowd who had not
yet understood the severity of the situation had laughed along and urged him on, but
the boy who at this point must have been crazed with fear and pain found a last burst
of strength in his humiliation and shame; broke a glass against a table and used one
of the shards to stab Von Grov almost clean through the foot.
Had Von Grov been just a tad more sober the boy might have been alright, but as
it turned out he didn't even notice the cut at first. With one final flamboyant
flourish of his scimitar and an exaggerated bow to the audience he gave the boy one
last slap with the sword and raised his foot to put his heel to the boy's back. It
was at that point that he must have gotten a first look at his foot. "These boots
cost more than you will make in your miserable life! They're ruined!" Von Grov had
shouted and kicked the boy hard in the stomach, the shard of glass still stuck to his
foot ripping a long gash. Before he could be stopped he had kicked the boy at least
a dozen more times, tearing skin, ripping tissue, and with one particularly savage
kick to the boy's face had managed to puncture at least one of the boy's eyes. Once
pulled off of the boy and calmed down Von Grov had been politely escorted out while
the boy had been unceremoniously lugged off to a healer. His status was unclear, but
as far as the Jugger understood it didn't look too good.
Without a doubt Von Grov would walk away from this with nothing but another
story to tell. The boy had initiated the brawl and had even technically managed to
draw first blood. Von Grov had every right to "defend" himself, and on top of that
it would come down to the word of a celebrated Duelmaster from a noble family against
that of a simple barback. Once over his anger even the innkeeper would most likely
take Von Grov's side in order to not lose the business. Barbacks were, after all, a
dime a dozen and easily replaced.
Through his window the Jugger could hear the roar of the crowd from the arena as
Von Grov entered to once again take on O'Malley in a rematch for the throne. He
Couldn't help but to wonder if any of those that cheered would head off to work after
the fight; perhaps as simple maids or waiters.

                                      SPY REPORT

I was going on vacation, see? Surf, sun... But what do those bums say? "Hit
the road, Debby Tonte. LAPUR needs a spyreport." Oh, well. Uncool, CLAN CROW. I
mean 0-0-0 is bad. Will they will be allowed to fight? I say use 'em for training
practice! The guys at BLACK KELTS like really pulled together to get a 3-1-0 this
turn, moving up by 6. What was the name of that team who got 4-1-0 this turn for a
total 514-597-10 you ask? (Sure) CARDOW HUNTERS' their name, and fighting's their
game! MVP award for JAILYN? MID EARTH's proud of him after beating ENCOLPIUS and
getting 24 points. Talk about yer major upsets! THERNYS' match with STR82HEL cost
him a loss of 12 points! Was that a tear I saw in JULIANUS' eye, as he took over
Duelmastership? And wasn't VON GROV fit to be tied! I hear the top team insists all
their warriors get nine hours sleep. They want photogenic fighters for PR photos.
Look, you guys stick to fighting, all right? MID EARTH was LAPUR's most avoided
team. Is there some award for that? Hhmph! What kind of warriors are OPEN HAND?
MID EARTH, an easy team to beat if I ever saw one, can't get them to accept an
invitation! Like, is MAD DOG popular, or what? He was challenged the most in all of
LAPUR! He's got a 23-22-0, is that good?
Challenges, revenges, Bloodfeuds. All LAPUR ever talks about is fighting! Me,
I'm more laid back. Hey, warriors get killed by other warriors, not by their manager
sending them to the Dark Arena. What's wrong with WEREUOUT's 2-0-0, PLATES? JOHN
COURAGE bloodfeuded (is that a word?) BAHRAM for revenge over some guy's bad fortune.
Was it really worth it? What if they had a fight and nobody showed up? I'd be out
of a job, that's what!!!
I really didn't, you know, study when I was a kid. Who would've guessed I'd be
a famous Spyreporter? I know how much you like reading this stuff, but I really
should stop. I had a fun time, see you later-- Debby Tonte

Von Grov -- Well done, Champ! Congrats on the Duelmaster repeat, and kudos for a
fine DM Column. -- Ora and The Old Guy

Palin -- Baby, it was finally my turn to give you a nailin', and I enjoyed every
minute of it! -- Chrome Cutter
P.S. I think I love you.

John Courage -- You remind me of Brett Favre, whom I revere. But you threw too many
interceptions today and my defense was ready. -- Copper Compacter

Cloudshadow -- I want you! I want to be the stylemaster aimer in this great arena.
Watch your back! -- Chrome Cutter

Gooooooooooooo, Vikings! -- Ora and Oremaster

Misty Rain -- RAIN, RAIN, GO AWAY!! I don't want to fall backwards today! -- Adara

Thernys -- I see fortune frowned upon us and you survived the tourney, although Javed
did not. If we keep this up, we'll make you Duelmaster in no time! Maybe we'll look
for some outside assistance from your previous opponent. -- Open Hand

Iceman -- Hey, big guy. <wink> I got this SMALL problem maybe you could help me
with. I'll make it worth your while if you could beat on Thernys again. Maybe,
bring your Beast friend with you, <double wink> -- Shirin

Rug 1492 -- Holy shambling mounds! I saw you wandering into the wrong arena and I

thought you were a dead man! I don't know how you got out of there but your manager
should keep a better eye on you, or... perhaps you're in the market for a new manager
now, hmm? -- Senchin, kind, caring mgr. Open Hand

Plates -- Hey! I was enjoying my automatic 2 free fights. If you could just lose
the next 5 or perhaps 10 fights I would appreciate it. Thanks. -- Senchin, mgr Open
Hand.

Salamander -- Ah, I like it better this time. -- Cloudshadow

Miss Friendly Fire -- Ah, yes, that is the ESSENCE of "friendly." Give me an
outright enemy. -- Butterfly
P.S. I can't believe I said that! Do NOT give me an enemy. I have enough problems
with my friends.

Vindocumus -- I have a lot of sympathy for you Gauls, but sympathy only goes so far,
and does NOT extend to throwing fights your way. You want a win off me, you have to
work for it. -- Horn Rock

Bimbo Slice -- If that's a piece of advice, I'm going to have to pass. My mother
would never forgive me. -- Mad Dog
P.S. And if you ever met my mother, you'd know that's a SERIOUS matter.

Bluiddvl -- Eh? Sounds Dutch. -- Stoneheart
P.S. The embarrassment of it! To be extremely charismatic, but quite unsocial.
Awkward, that.

Julianus -- Quite clear and cool. I like it--air that hasn't been breathed by every
toad on the street. -- Mad Dog

Mojo -- Hmmm, back to back and it took less time. -- Rindel the Improving

Cancer -- The gods hate me! -- Jailyn the Unworthy

Bahram -- Excellent strategy on your part, another 15 seconds and things might have
been different. -- Thernys the Impressd

Beast -- Your name suits you. -- Gaeglin the Overwhelmed

Str82hel -- Interesting name you have here. -- Lhisson the Indecisive
