in another place:

Math op Owain, riding behind Lord Malcorn and Uncle Wolf, was trying to look in
every direction at once. His companions had assured him that there would be physical
threats, and physical threats were his business here. He felt inadequate to face
those probably-numerous threats alone, but what else was new? He had it to do.
Because he was looking around, he was the first to see three people--human-
looking people--scrambling down one side of the valley and waving their arms.
Probably shouting, but he couldn't hear anything except an endless waterfall/wildfire
sort of roar coming out of the doorway. "More gladiators!" he said, staring.
Remembering the problem, he looked to the sides and behind before turning back toward
them. "I recognize the one in the lead--Young Joan, from Morya--"
Uncle Wolf didn't look around, but he grunted in satisfaction. "Good. I
started some coming from another direction, glad they made it. You'll have help on
the defense, Math."
"That might make the difference," Math said. "I was a little worried about...
things." After a moment he added, "I can't watch everywhere at once."
Wolf glanced at him and smiled grimly. "If you'd had to do it alone, you would
have managed. I was in no doubt of that."
"I was," Math muttered. He surveyed the surroundings again. It seemed wrong,
too easy, that they should be able to ride up to the doorway unopposed. Not even
seeing anyone. Somewhere an ambush was waiting for them.

       + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ Report from the Tourney #1 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ +

Larkin here, with a report from the Winter Tourney. Okay, maybe this isn't
Atlantis, but it's somewhere warm, and if that isn't a beach, at least it's sand,
and, as advertised, there are drinks with umbrellas in them. And young women with a
lot of suntan showing. By the time you read this, the tourney will be over, but
while I'm writing it, the tourney is NOT over. And a lot of you guys reading this
won't have been able to go, anyway.
I'm interviewing Zalgor Prigg, one of the managers participating in the Old
Valamantis Bloodgames, and let me tell you, Old Valamantis is not a place you want to
hang around if you don't have to. It's rotten with magic, to begin with--Folstrom
magic, the blackest there is--and then it's got all this blood and violence on top of
it, and it makes for a dark and scary venue. Anything might rise out of the ruins
around the arena, summoned by the blood and the curses of the managers.
"Mr. Prigg, could you tell us why you--"
"It was the play on words," the manager said, overriding the question. "I
couldn't resist--the chance to call a Bloodgames team Phoenix, you know, the 'rising
from the ashes of death' business. Of course, then I had to change it to Phonetix,
but that's okay, keep people guessing."
"I've heard the Commission mages talking about that name, sir, and they seem
alarmed. One of them said the name was practically a spell in itself, used here."
"I heard. That's why I had to change it."
"Have you considered what might actually rise from the ashes and blood here as a
result?"
"Well, no, but that isn't my business, you know. I manage gladiators. Let the
mages worry about what pops in from some other dimension. Besides, what if nothing
happens?"
"But, sir, there have already been reports of zombie rats and tentacled monsters
lurking in the backs of the locker rooms! And someone is bound to consider that you
have a partial responsibility--"
"No," Prigg said, "I have no responsibility for that kind of thing. I'm no
magician, I haven't been reading forbidden tomes...." He paused, looking thoughtful.
"Maybe it was TigToad with his Obscure Lore...."
"I don't believe there's a team of that name in this Bloodgames--"
"No, not here. Earlier, in Veastian. He could have been, hmm, preparing for
this, opening contacts if not gates, stuff like that. Has anybody seen any Dark
Toads around?"
"Not until they've had six drinks with umbrellas in them. Tell me, sir, have
you given any thought to the moral implications of the Bloodgames?"
"What moral implications?" the manager asked. "This isn't about morals, it's
about survival. And the way to survive on the sands is to kill your opponents every
chance you get!"
     "Yes, but--"
"There's a reason they don't hold these contests up in Andoria," the manager
said sternly. "Good people in their ways, the Andorians, but they just aren't cut
out for this kind of grim business." He paused to listen to the roar of the crowds
jamming the ancient arena. Checked the marquee where slaves dangled from ropes and
updated the records of participants. Nodded, grimly satisfied. "Another death.
That's good--can't have too many survivors, or it cheapens the victory at the end."
     "But the death toll--"
"Bah! Don't get the idea that these gladiators are the flower of Alastarian
youth. The ones who enter the Bloodgames are the men with no hope. We offer them a
future they could never have dreamed of, but they have to work for it, sweat for it,
bleed for it, and sometimes die for it. The survivors..." he bared his teeth in a
grin that would not have looked out of place on a wolf, "they owe us EVERYTHING, and
they'll do anything to repay us."
     "But--"
"And besides," Zalgor Prigg went on, "if you really want to take up the moral
question, go talk to the Grey Wand. She's the one set this up, after all."
"I don't see the point, frankly. She's got plenty of Lord Protectors, and they
have longer training, skills polished and honed to a--"
"The Bloodgames victors, they're Her enforcers," Prigg said. "No polish, sure,
but when a dirty job needs doing, one of these guys will do it, and no questions
asked."

       + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ Report from the Tourney #2 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ +

Larkin here once again, with more interviews from the tourney. This time I'm
talking to a new manager, so new he doesn't even have a manager name. "Sir... what
would you like me to call you, by the way?"
"Why do you have to call me anything? I don't understand why you want to
interview me. There are lots of great managers here who could probably tell you
stuff--"
"I'm looking for a new perspective, the point of view of someone who is just
starting out with the gladiatorial games."
"Oh. Well, I guess that would be me."
"Absolutely right! Tell me, what do you think of the tourney? This is your
first, right?"
"Right, my first," the young man agreed. "And it's GREAT! Everyone is just
great here! I mean, most of these managers, they're, like, legends, you know?
Everybody's heard of them, and they have stables of HUNDREDS of gladiators, and
they've been polishing their tricks for YEARS, and I didn't figure I had much of a
chance, you know?"
"The popular view is that no matter how much you know, the arena can always
throw a surprise at you--"
"Yeah, yeah, I've heard that. I don't know if I believe it, but I've heard it.
But that isn't the best thing about this tourney. The best thing is that everyone
here has been GREAT. Or else I didn't meet them--the ones that might not have been.
But I think I met just about everyone, and--"
"And they were great. I'm glad. But perhaps you could tell our readers a
little more, maybe tell them how these experienced managers were great to you?"
"Well, yeah, okay. It's that everyone was so friendly and helpful, see? The
ENTIRE Consortium talked to me about warrior design, for instance. I learned a lot
there. And, well, there was Mannequin, and The Greek Guy, and I actually met
Manager, too! And they were all really helpful. Advice, you know, and charts, and
all that stuff that was so confusing. It was just the best experience! I'm going to
do it again, for sure!"

                                 DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
                             Notes from the arena champ.

Salamander doesn't really speak, so I'm shamelessly going to steal his place in
the spotlight for some random out of character rambling here. Salamander is the last
of the three warriors I kept upon returning to this game a year or so ago. The other
two, Elvira and Von Grov graduated not too long ago and Salamander (unless something
unexpected happens here) should get his invite within a turn as well. Running these
guys again has been a lot of fun, a tad frustrating, and perhaps most of all...
nostalgic and a bit strange.
To give you an idea of just how long ago these guys were created, Von Grov
fought a guy named Dan Somers on his 3rd turn. As in Daniel Somers from "In Old
Oklahoma," as in the Duke, as in "Put up your Dukes." Don't know when Tex stopped
playing, but this must have been a good 15 years or so ago. At the time Von Grov was
named as an inside joke to my brother (Bartender from ShadowSpire and Murska) who
when asked what his goal was by the personal trainer we were assigned the very first
day we joined a gym stated that "I just want to get real "grov," which in Swedish
means something in between buffed and really really sturdy. Considering that neither
of us had ever seen the inside of a gym before, and that it was pretty obvious that
we hadn't, the comment was a bit... "ambitious." We did okay for a year or so,
though, and thinking back at that time I can still almost smell the place and
remember songs like "Missing," "Be my lover," and "Wonderwall" play in the speakers
as we spotted each other while discussing DM strategies.
Elivra Madigan was named after a movie I had slept through in film school right
around that time. I've slept through more great movies than most people even know
exist, I think. A particularly horrid memory from around this time is a semi
comatose afternoon, going in and out of sleep, hungover like a dog with Peter
Greenaway's "A Zed & two Noughts" rolling on the screen. I still wake up in a cold
sweat dreaming about zebras sometimes after drinking.
So, it is with a bit of sentimentality I'm watching the last of my oldies about
to graduate here, but as I m filling out the strategy sheets for some of my newer
guys I smile and think that in another 15 years I might be going through THEIR old
fights, thinking about father-daughter dances at the girl scouts, martini nights with
the wife watching Dexter, and overseas telephone calls and FB chats with my brother
and ex fellow gym rat talking DM strategies. Great memories being made every day.
Thanks to all of you for helping make them.

                                      SPY REPORT

It is I, Novgorodny Vir, Spymaster of Spymasters. Look on my work, ye mighty,
and despair! Nothing is certain in LAPUR, with changing loyalties, changing
Duelmasters. Write this down: new top team--STREET WALKERS. What's a move up by 5
you ask? (alright, maybe you didn't ask) Cause for celebration, according to OPEN
HAND. Good things come to those who fight well, as STREET WALKERS can attest, moving
up by 3. STREET WALKERS had cause to celebrate, after NAILIN' PALIN got 24 points by
beating JULIANUS. Win some, lose some. Speaking of which, BUTTERFLY was winsome,
after beating RINDEL and seeing him lose 14 points. The arena was more crowded than
usual this time, as MAKADOS faced LAPUR's Duelmaster. SALAMANDER successfully staved
off a grab for the roses by MAKADOS of PHILANTHROPISTS. Does LAPUR have no one
talented enough to dethrone him? Word has it one team in LAPUR is taking speech
lessons to try to bore their opponent to death. I'll bet it works.
And how sociable are LAPUR's warriors? Come, let us see. To quell some nasty
rumors, the guys in STREET WALKERS are not carrying any incurable diseases. No need
to avoid 'em. The warriors of STREET WALKERS found their efforts at combat
frustrated as MID EARTH apparently had more important things to do than fight.
Everyone is famous for fifteen minutes, and LHISSON is it right now. Most challenged
warrior. Isn't MID EARTH proud! As a confidence booster, STR82HEL challenged
KILLIAN MCGUINES, down 24 points. Do you also slay vicious rodents in your spare
time, STR82HEL? STR82HEL bested KILLIAN MCGUINES. The whole thing leaves a bitter
memory.
The moving sword slashes, and having slashed, moves on... Like a tattered,
worn-out, faded, out-of-fashion garment cast out to rot, COMMANDER RIKER of TREKKERS
has been summarily sent to the Dark Arena. Charity is unknown in LAPUR, and rightly
so. OPEN HAND exacted their revenge against TRAIL OF TEARS. Ask not for whom the
sword slashes; it slashes for thee.
All good things must come to an end. More important duties call me. Do not
despair! I shall return!-- Novgorodny Vir

Mad Dog -- Too mad for me, pal. Too mad for me! -- Silver Saw

Paddy O'Sadism -- Man, oh man, you just plain thwacked me! Ouchy, ouchy, ouchy. --
Stainless Shaker

Me borgs done gone 0-2? Damme, Ora! It be all that wench's fault. -- Oremaster
(looking carefully over his shoulder to make sure Ora is not around.)

Out for a round or two. Will return to the office soon. -- Ora and Oremaster

Makados -- I suppose that because I'm female, I don't qualify as a recipient of true
philanthropy. Bummer. Double standard at work. -- Cloudshadow

Silver Saw -- You reminded me of a dentist, not a good memory. It set my teeth on
edge, so I bit you. -- Mad Dog

Gellius -- Your name made me think of jelly, oddly enough, even though there's
nothing jelly-like about you personally. But that's okay, there are other things I
can like about you, such as the elegant way you lose to me. I really like that.
Don't dilute the effect by losing to anyone else, though. -- Butterfly

Commander Data -- But I didn't want a lot of data to deal with. Ignorance is bliss.
-- Fire Crystal

Paddy -- Death happens in the arena, no hard feelings. It might just as easily have
gone the other way. -- Jorja
P.S. Stoneheart was low con, low will, an easy kill.

Our congratulations to Makados. -- Jorja and the Cardow Hunters
