The Silent Place near Zuwayza:

After Agro left, Blackwind didn't have much to do except stay alert and watch
for something approaching this hole in the fence from either direction. Eyes in the
back of his head would have been useful. Or a long dry season making the leaves on
the ground crackly, to warn of anything coming through the trees. But the leaves
were sodden with weeks of rain and snow; there would be no sound from them.
There was no sound from them, and yet when the gladiator turned in his regular
visual round, there was Redfox coming along the fence. Blackwind scanned his
companion quickly. It looked like the Rirorni had minor injuries, major worries.
Presumably Agro was guarding the main gate now.
"We have to go inside," Redfox said without preliminaries.
Blackwind blinked. "Why? And what about guarding the gates?" He glanced
toward the hole in the fence. The roiling cloud was still there just inside.
Waiting.
"Vekhirn--" He sighed suddenly and scrubbed a hand across his face. "Uncle
Wolf gave me the names of some people who could be trusted, if we encountered them,
and one is this Vekhirn, a Karnhorn magician." He noticed Blackwind's skeptical
expression and grimaced. "Yeah, I know, trust a Karnhorn? But Wolf said this one's
okay. And he... I guess I'd say he 'feels' okay to me. He says we have to go into
the Silent Place, there's a portal in there somewhere that we have to go through.
Because Uncle Wolf and Lord Malcorn need us... somewhere."
     "You agreed to this?"
"I guess, for me, anyway. I've had a feeling that something was, I dunno, not
exactly wrong but coming to a climax, and I should be there to help. And I do trust
this guy to be telling true, partly because of what I was already feeling."
"Okay." Blackwind nodded and squared his shoulders. "If you go, I go, too.
But what about guarding the perimeter of the Silent Place?"
"Agro will stay here, and Vekhirn has committed himself to staying here, too.
He says his spells will work for this, even if he can't seal the barrier permanently.
He-- Here he comes now. You can ask him yourself."
The man coming toward them was physically a typical Karnhorn, medium height,
slim, dark, with a beak of a nose and sharp, narrow eyes. His clothing and
accessories were typical of all magicians, robe with symbols on it, tall pointed hat
(it had a turban wound round the base, but he was, after all, a Karnhorn), carved
staff with a crystal on the top. He looked determined.
"You must go at once," he said. "The Malcorn needs you--"
"It's taken him a while to get wherever he is," Blackwind objected. "How're we
going to get there in time to do him any good?"
"He had to go there," the magician explained. He was more patient than either
gladiator would have expected. "He had to find the way, because the Spirit Lands are
always in flux. But you do not have to find the way, I have a talisman that will
take you directly to the Malcorn, wherever he may be." He pulled a small teardrop of
crystal out of some hidden pocket of his robe. It was suspended from a fine golden
chain, and it glittered like a fallen star in the moonlight. "This will be your
guide, and it will take you to the Malcorn."
Blackwind glanced at Redfox. The Rirorni seemed calm but tense. Resolved. He
was going. And where a Rirorni led, surely a man of Malcorn would not stay behind.
He nodded. "Will that thing help us find the portal we need inside the Silent
Place?"
Something that might have been relief flitted across the magician's face,
covered quickly with professional calm. "Yes, it will. To walk side by side will be
enough in most places, but when you pass through the portal and any similar magical
structure, you must be in contact with each other if you are not to become
separated."
Fighting the conviction that he was making a mistake, Blackwind reached out and
took the talisman by the chain. It was heavier than he had expected of such a little
thing. "We go back and enter the Silent Place through the main gate?"
"That is not necessary. You can enter here quite well, and then I will seal it
behind you."

                                 DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
                             Notes from the arena champ.

Another column then-- All done musing and although I guess I've always had an
image in my head for Salamander, one of those stereotypical bald eunuchs that
moonlight as poisoners, I've never really had a story in mind for him, so on to more
dry stuff. Numbers:
His are actually pretty decent, which is one of the reasons for the
aforementioned "frustration" trying to run these guys. While 14-10 might not be an
awful record I still feel that given his class, base numbers, and his learn rate of
slightly greater than 3 learns per match I should have done a lot better with him.
It's a tough arena though. Could be that. Could also be the fact that I kept
banging his head up against Cloudshadow for a 2-3 record. Take those matches out,
and Salamander's record would be a bit more respectable. Good fights all of them,
though. I hope the repeat challenges weren't minded too much.
Salamander is a Striker looking like 21-5-7-21-9-10-11. He'll graduate with
Masters in Dec and Att, Adex in Rip and Init, and an Exp in Def. Not sure where the
rip and defensive skills came from. He's never defended in his life, much less
ripped. I think he got slightly hosed in Init, and landed at mode in everything
else.
Where it gets real fun is when it comes to his favorites. His favorite weapon
turns out to be the Epee which he's never used it on account of his deftness, but
there it is. How is he expected to use this weapon which he can barely wield then?
Why... by using the Bash tactic of course. I scratch my head and wonder just how one
bashes with an Epee? I imagine him holding it in the wrong end, hitting his
opponents with the handle. Hmmmm.... I keep reading, and of a sudden it all makes
sense. One bashes with an Epee very, very slooooooowly. OE/AL comes in at Very
Low/Very low, which explains a lot of things. No wonder Salamander graduated with
such a medicre record. I thought strikers were supposed to run hot, preferably with
a Decise tactic. I'll run my next one 2-2-2-B, and perhaps I can get that one's
record to match its potential.
That has got to be a one in a million roll. Hopefully I didn't use up my one
miracle roll in a lifetime on this guy. I still have a lot of Yazhee to play.

                                      SPY REPORT

Greetings warriors! It is I, Zontani Sharp Eyes, here to bring report of the
clash and bustle of the weekly LAPUR games. Warriors--remember that glory waits
always around the corner! Witness how this week CARDOW HUNTERS went 3-2-0 to move up
4 in the rankings. Did only my eyes note the 4-1-0 record which MID EARTH managed to
post this round? I don't doubt that such a record will draw challengers! DEATHWIND
FORGE caught the eye of many in the gladiatorial commission as he skillfully bested
BIMBO SLICE and was awarded 26 points in recognition. In one of the week's more
notable duels, DEATHWIND FORGE put down BIMBO SLICE, causing her to lose 22 points of
recognition in the process. This time out LUCKY EIREANN made his bid for the throne
as he challenged SALAMANDER in an all out contest of skill for possession of the
title! Not for nothing has SALAMANDER in the past laid claim to the Duelmaster's
throne, and this week he's proven his combat skill yet again. Heed this! A seer has
warned that if exactly 6 die in duels this week, the whole city shall perish! Just
remember...5 or 7!
But come now, let us look deeper into the maze of contention and crossed blades
that is city LAPUR. My inside sources tell me that the team to beat in LAPUR these
days is MID EARTH. At least, most blades in town are looking to avoid them.
Apparently the stalwarts of METAL MINCERS are catching the bulk of jests down at the
challenging board for their large share of the avoids. Mighty fighters cannot but
expect competition from those below. NAILIN' PALIN take warning! You have more than
a few enemies in LAPUR.
Vendettas. Bloodied blades and broken spears. Indeed the city has seen more
than its fair share of red in recent times. My sources at PLATES stable claim
they've never seen the guild bitterer. This as a result of the untimely demise of
9DMPH. Beware SAMA'EL! Walk proud, warriors of OPEN HAND! By striking down KILLIAN
MCGUINES you have avenged the honor of your dead. Your virtue is known to all in
LAPUR. Some say a warrior is judged by the way he bears arms. One thing is sure,
better a dagger in hand then a sword on the belt!
If it were not for my skills as a spy I would have been mugged three times
already in LAPUR. Nice atmosphere you have here! More than a sharp eye must I keep,
indeed a stout pair of legs must I keep as well! The endless paths of Alastari await
me! Till next we meet remember: a fool flies into a rage quickly and often. The
wise are angered by the same thing only once. Zontani Sharp Eyes

Trail Of Tears -- What a great and nostalgic DM Column. We loved it. Kudos. -- Ora
and Oremaster

Now, Oremaster, you once-upon-a-time studmuffin, leave this round's strategizing to
me. No more of those ophers, you hear? -- Ora

Aye, Old Lady. -- Oremaster

Lucky Eireann -- So you're calling that just luck? Well... okay, if that means I'm
actually better but just having an off day. But I think my teammates might dispute
that. -- Mad Dog

Rindel -- Okay! I didn't know I could "sting like a bee." What a rush. -- Butterfly

Commander Data -- Well, they do say that knowledge is power. Guess they're right. --
Snowshadow

Constable Odo -- My goodness! SIX skills? You can defeat me again if you promise to
teach me another six skills. That was just great! -- Fire Crystal

Springbuck -- With a name like that, you could be one of us. Let me buy you a drink
in honor of that, hmm? -- Mossrock

Silver Saw -- Ha! -- Mad Dog, hear me howl

Our congratulations to Salamander. -- Jorja and the Cardow Hunters

Killian Mcguines -- Brave challenge. -- Rindel

Butterfly -- Float like a butterfly perhaps, but your sting is lacking. -- Jailyn

Nailin Pailin -- You are no lady, your nothing more than a low down dirty #$@%&! --
Thernys

Bahram -- Did you forget to bring a weapon? -- Gaglin

Snowdrop -- Thanks for the tutoring! -- Lhisson

Makados, Smack O'Malley, and Cloudshadow -- The Mid Earth guild salute you on your
graduation.

All -- Another Aimed Blow invitee!?! What a year for the Lapurian Aimed Blow class.
-- Visionist

Deathwind Forge -- I freakin hate you! -- Rindel

May -- You got lucky the first time. -- Jailyn

Lieutenant Worf -- I want you tested for performance enhancing drugs! I hit you for
crit damage six times!?! -- Thernys

Miss Friendly Fire -- You learned the hard way that I and not so friendly. -- Gaeglin

9 February 10
All -- I know you all thought the old Wiz that is Fiz went off to die somewhere.
Well, I didn't. Now I'm back to befuddle and frustrate you with my senseless
ramblings. I look forward to reconnecting with all my old friends and enemies alike.
