Without thought, responding to the same trained impulse, every gladiator present
drew his or her sword, turning to face outward from their group.
Blackwind more than half expected to see floods demons and monsters pouring
toward them from every direction. If so, they must be invisible, all he could see
were the shadows that filled the valley. He squinted. "Is it my imagination, or is
it getting darker here?" That would be bad. Darkness would make it harder to fight.
"Valley of Shadow," Math op Owain said. "We should have realized--"
"So you should," Uncle Wolf answered. "In this place, the shadows are as
dangerous as what casts them."
     "More dangerous," Lord Malcorn corrected.
The old shaman shrugged and nodded. "Perhaps. At that level of danger, the
distinction is unimportant."
"How do we fight shadows?" Redfox asked. "You must have had something in mind,
or you wouldn't have drawn us here."
"The light is behind the... creatures that cast the shadows," Wolf pointed out.
"That makes the shadows advance toward you, ahead of the creatures. You must make of
yourselves lights to drive the shadows back on their creators."
     "How can we--?"
"No, 'Fox, I think I see what he means!" Math drew the gladiators aside. "Come
over out of the way, and I'll tell you. Let them deal with the Door."
"He's right," Necroma said before Math could begin his explanation. "We *are*
lights if we know it." She paused, selecting words. "Here, even if it isn't exactly
the Spirit Lands, the spirit is what matters the most. Sure, we're here physically--
and we can die physically--but just as the body dominates in the Mortal World, so the
spirit dominates here. If our spirits are strong and bright, they'll be like lights
here!"
"That's easy to *say*, and it sounds good," Blackwind objected, "but what are we
supposed to *do*?"
"It's like... ah! Like the meditation exercises they teach us on the Isle, to
increase our Will or our Wit," Math said. "That kind of focus, but we concentrate on
light and life and warmth--"
"Well put," Necroma said. "And we'd better do it right now."
"Not forgetting," Young Joan was actually beginning to glow as she concentrated,
"that we will have to deal with physical creatures once we have vanquished the
shadows."
                      *** ***** *** ***** ***
Gladiators muttered as they concentrated, mantras that had helped them meditate
on the Isle, or curses when their minds wavered and they lost the focus,
encouragement and advice to themselves and each other.
Uncle Wolf's mouth quirked. "They'll do," he said. He turned his full
attention back to the Door they had to close.
Malcorn hadn't heard his comment. He was running his hands up and down through
the air as though feeling along a wall that stood between them and the Doorway and
doing some muttering of his own. He pressed against it with both hands and the full
weight of his big body, snapping out three words that crackled with power. Nothing
visible happened.
The old shaman adjusted his perceptions to "see" the wall. Still no response to
Malcorn's efforts. He sighed. "If it was easy," he muttered, "it would need us to
do it."
Malcorn smiled grimly. "True." He knocked on the wall of air. "I think this
may be more in your line than mine."
Wolf squinted. "Some kind of elemental," he decided. "Air elemental--wind?"
He laid his own hands on the invisible wall. "No, too static. Even when a wind
elemental stays in one place, it moves, spins."
"Then I thank the gods it isn't one. A tornado would do us no good at all,"
Malcorn said.
"Mmm." Wolf shifted his attention, feeling for any chink or facet of identity.
A tornado would have been easier to deal with, because it could have been identified.
Perhaps even torn from the control of whoever was guarding this Gate and then turned
against--
Heat blasted out of the unchanging air. Both men jumped back, and Wolf cursed
softly, blowing on burned fingers. "Heat waves," he gasped. After a moment to get
himself back under full control, he added, "Partly heat waves. Even that should show
motion--"
"It isn't the world we know," Malcorn said. "So it may not follow any of the
rules we know."
Wolf snorted. "Going to teach me to suck eggs, boy? The rules of the world,
no, of course they can't be counted on. But elementals have their own rules, and
unless the entity causing this has the power of a god, the elements must perform
according to their natures."
Malcorn took three long paces to the side, then looked back at the wall on a
slant. "No heat-wave motion," he said. "Not even a ripple." He squinted. "What if
it isn't an elemental, what if it's... a specialized demon of some kind?"
"That would be... tricky." The shaman looked at him. "How can there be
'specialized' demons?"
"I've heard of some breeding experiments." Malcorn shrugged. "The consensus
was that they couldn't possibly succeed, but no one actually knows. And this might
be such an experiment. Half demon, half elemental."
"So what do we do about it?" Wolf put his hands on his hips and glared at the
invisible wall. "I can handle an elemental--probably. A demon, only sometimes."
"If our opponent is being creative, then we must be also." Malcorn frowned. "I
have an idea...."

                             Notes from the arena champ.

HA! Leave me with a bullseye on my back huh?! Well look where I'm sitting now!
Bet you didn't think I had it in me did ya Owsly?! Bet you thought O'l Forge was
never gonna amount to nothing didn't ya? Well you can shove your "Dannae's and O's"
and your mug of ale right up your arse! What do you think about that! And for the
lot of ya well all those easy wins were a gift! You didn't think they were gonna
last forever did ya? I intend to hold down this chair for as long as I can. I've
worked hard to get this spot! I didn't drink when the rest of my team did! I didn't
party like the rest of them did! I trained harder than the rest of them did! So
yeah I deserve this! Am I bitter? Of course I'm bitter! You get passed over, beat
to s#*% and see how bitter you are! And Owsly, stick that bullseye on your butt so I
have a spot to "Aim" for with my foot when I kick it up between your shoulders!

                                      SPY REPORT

Hail and well met warriors of LAPUR! Know me for who I am, Zontani Sharp Eyes,
Spymaster extraordinaire of all Alastari. Former top team STREET WALKERS was
unseated this week as MID EARTH moved up from 4th ranking to take the top spot with a
5-0-0 record for the round. Warriors--remember that glory waits always around the
corner! Witness how this week MID EARTH went 5-0-0 to move up 3 in the rankings. My
praise to TREKKERS for their 4-1-0 week this time out. Indeed, it was a skillfully
fought round deserving of notice! The city has turned out in honor of RINDEL, for
with his arena victory he may now lay claim to the highest position in the city!
Heed this! A seer has warned that if exactly 6 die in duels this week, the whole
city shall perish! Just remember...5 or 7!
But come now, let us look deeper into the maze of contention and crossed blades
that is city LAPUR. I saw one fighter that warriors avoided when this week's
challenge seeking began. METAL MINCERS is feared. This much I can say. If you
didn't look down dark alleys you'd have been hard pressed to find any of MID EARTH
last week. Busy avoiding METAL MINCERS? Loose talk at the arena has reached my ears
and it but confirms the knowledge that many fighters are after BUTTERFLY. Watch your
back! At the gambling halls I have started to bet money on QUARK. He has got the
courage it takes. Witness his challenge this turn against BUTTERFLY! Do not the
gods reward courage? QUARK it was that claimed victory in the bout, while also
rising 24 points in recognition. A match that raised a few eyebrows at the games
this week, it seems that CONSTABLE ODO posted a challenge against the more highly
recognized TRINKET. The results, you ask? Well, the firebrand CONSTABLE ODO subdued
TRINKET. Remember warriors, this is the discipline of steel.
Vendettas. Bloodied blades and broken spears. Indeed the city has seen more
than its fair share of red in recent times. Dark alleys may hide both secrets and
assassins. In the arena there is only the brightness of steel. Keep vigil always!
If it were not for my skills as a spy I would have been mugged three times
already in LAPUR. Nice atmosphere you have here! Sadly warriors, now longer can I
keep thy company nor savor the ale of thy fine city. Depart I must and soon! Till
next we meet remember: a fool flies into a rage quickly and often. The wise are
angered by the same thing only once. Zontani Sharp Eyes

Spartacus -- The few times over the years we have used the DA, we have almost always
sent the warrior naked. -- Ora (for The Consortium)

And there is a sub-group of fans who love that. Weird people.

Deathwind Forge -- Congrats on retaining the title. You deserve to be Champion. --
Ora, Oremaster, and The Borgs

Deathind Forge -- Your iron was quicker and nastier than my rusty old blade. I
salute my better. -- Iron Impacter

Rindel -- Good luck in The Big Time, Lord Protector. -- Ora et al

Constable Odo -- That sucked! And it hurt! -- Stainless Shaker

     Tough. -- Odo

Gellius -- I do not know what got into me, but I was at my best. -- Chrome Cutter

Greetin's all. Ora n' this old miner bea on yon RnR. Don't wan yon bother. Naye.
May miss yon few. Aye. -- Oremaster (working on reconciliation)

Congrats to all the recent graduates, well done. -- Roadkill and the Street Walkers

Rindel -- I guess that proves who the stylemaster really is, now, don't it. Congrats
on your invite. -- Pinky

Misty Rain -- Finally!!! Some Skills!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you. -- Mary
Wanna

Carnage -- Hey, I'm here for a good time, not a long time. -- Capt. Antsy Pants

Hardwood -- Just spreading the love! -- Miley Virus

Rutilius -- Just you know my name is Bi-Furious, not B. Furious... seems we Street
Walkers got edited AGAIN. (I didn't think it was that bad of a name, but then again
I don't make the decisions around here).

Sparticus -- In response to your question about armor... armor is not a bad thing,
not at all, over-encumbrance is (at least in my opinion). Since strength and
constitution determine your ability to carry weight, when you have neither, you can't
carry squat without it affecting overall fighting ability. I always try and stay
below my carry limits, and in a lot of my designs that means a primary and a back-up
weapon, and that's it. Granted this is just my opinion, so take it at its worth
(remember I'm also the retard that designs 3 con, 3 speed offensive warriors just
because I can).

I did do a little research. Of the 56 kills the Street Walkers have in this arena, I
was able to bring up 36 of those kills. 34 were wearing armor only 2 of the kills
were not wearing armor. To be totally honest, 34-2 shocked me. Of the 34 armored
warriors, 18 were wearing Chainmail or higher. So I asked the girls what they think
of each armor set....

Plate Armor -- "Why bother even going out the door if nobody can even tell if you're
a woman?"

Platemail -- "Soooo last year's fashion, let us know when bell bottoms are back in
style!"

Chainmail -- "Absolutely a yes! A single strand around the hips, maybe gold plated."

Scalemail -- "With all the moisturizer we use and you want us to prance around in a
dead fish costume?"

Ringmail -- "Too much chaffing!"

Padded Leather -- "We consider ANYTHING padded to be false advertising!"

Leather -- "Leather should be used for pleasure, never for business!"

Any and all Helms -- "Do you have any idea how long it takes for us to do our hair?"

Ghost of Chickadee -- WHAT??? You talking about my anger management problems? You
better shut up or I'll kill you dead!!! Oh. Wait. Nevermind. -- Viedras (I gotta
remember to take my thorazine...)

Thunderbold -- You had me worried for about 30 seconds there. Maybe. -- Viedras

Stainless Shaker -- This is called "fighting," not dancing. I didn't do anything
"mean" except fail to teach you anything. On the other hand, I have to thank you for
the lessons. They meant a lot to me. -- Daerelon

Stormrider -- Not a clone by any stretch. I'm just this guy, see, trying to do what
I have to to win. -- Saryn

Jehlch -- Was that really necessary? I realize Theraeus was having a bad patch of
luck, having lost his previous two fights, but I don't think he was ready to die yet.
Or maybe he was, I dunno, but no matter: the feud is on, though I think we will only
try once, maybe twice, since you didn't really mean to kill him. -- Saryn

Jorja -- Your live and let live approach to accidental deaths is commendable. I
doubt that I, nor my manager, could take such a zen attitude towards it, accident or
not. -- Daerelon

Gemini -- Like I have said before, luck is fickle and today it favored me. -- Rindel

Butterfly -- Thank the gods you survived, I don't know what got into me. -- Gaeglin

Trinket -- What the... -- Lhisson

Leo -- Well fought, till we meet again. -- Jehlch

Rapid Adjustment -- Perhaps I don't stink as much as I thought. -- Menhoir

Pinky -- Impressive dueling for one so young. -- Rindel

All -- Since I will be retiring, here are my numbers. 11-12-9-15-11-9-17, Expert
Attack, Adex Parry and Defense, Master Riposte. Favorites, Longsword, High/Moderate,
defense skills. -- Lord Protector Rindel

Gilean Yasur -- Damned Golem! -- Lhisson

Saryn -- Head hunting a bit? -- Menhoir

Theraeus -- I find it ironic that two members of your guild challenge my guild mates,
yet you matchup with me and you die on the way to the infirmary. -- Jehlch

Lucky Eireann -- It pains my to say this, but great DM column. Good luck at the Isle
if you decide to continue your dueling career. -- Visionist

Quark -- My apologies for the head blows (you shouldn't have tried to parry with your
forehead, though), I was suffering from an input error. I hope to see it fixed
before we meet again. -- Butterfly
P.S. Although I will admit the win was pleasing.

Viedras -- Somehow, I'm not surprised. -- Thunderbold

Verus -- Well, damn. So much for the winning record. -- Stormrider

Locutus of Borg -- Those voices in the stands, what ninies! -- Maplesong

Miley Virus -- My momma told me to avoid dominatrixes, and I... forgot. I think it
was your red hair. -- Hardwood

Verus -- Yeah, I know. -- Thunderbold

Our congratulations to Rindel. -- Jorja and the Cardow Hunters
