Obregon paused in his musings concerning cold fusion with the blonde next to
him. "Now this is interesting," he said, which was of course true by definition.
Into the Lapur tavern strode four Rirorni warriors of the wild, tribesmen with
blue and red warpaint on their faces. They all shared a familial connection it
seemed, and moved in unison without need of communication. Behind them they dragged
a terrified man, bound and gagged with leathern thongs. Obregon raised his eyebrow
amusedly.
"We fight for honor. Our tribe has been scattered, and we hope to find the rest
of our peoples here in Lap-ur," the tall male said. "But until that day, we seek
only a violent death to regain our honor."
"That can be arranged," the older man replied, signaling to the barmaid for more
drinks with the barest nod.
"This one is the spy for our enemies. He must die. We bring him as a gift to
you, oh wise one. Kill him as you will."
Obregon looked over the terrified man. "Surely everyone deserves a chance at
redemption," he offered. "To the Dark Arena, then."
The four Rirorni followed the man and his blonde to the arena, as dusk turned to
night ...

All five of the gladiators had managed at least some degree of light, but they
were finding it harder than they'd expected, and they hadn't expected it to be easy.
Math op Owain repeated his mantra yet again, trying to get past his embarrassment at
a lack-luster performance. Each of the others *else* was glowing like a lantern, and
he was barely a candle, and a dim one at that.
"Is it my imagination," Necroma asked, "or am I doing especially poorly here?
Maybe because I studied necromancy--"
"You're doing great!" Blackwind said. "It's me that is being a dim--"
"Ah!" Young Joan nodded. "I see it now, each of us can only see outside our
own light--"
"Like trying to see the backs of our own heads," Redfox broke in. "We can see
the light from the others, but not our own. Well, good, I thought I wasn't managing
to do this at all. Thought I was going to let the rest of you down."
Math looked toward the advancing shadows, now advancing more slowly. But they
seemed denser, darker. They even seemed to have a form of sorts, as though they
were... creatures composed entirely of shadow. As though they had substance and were
obstacles that the light was flowing around as water flows around rocks. His hand
tightened on the hilt of his sword, and he forced himself to relax and loosen the
grip; there isn't much you can do if you're gripping so hard your muscles are locked.
A Shadow on the edge of the pack, it was hard to think of them as anything but
creatures now, rushed forward suddenly, elongating. Its shape changed from upright
and vaguely man-like to leaping-wolf to a thick spear--aimed at Blackwind, who was on
the left end of the line the gladiators had formed. The Malcornishman threw himself
down and to the side--to the left, leaving a gap between himself and his companions.
There'd been no other obvious way for him to go, Redfox was too close on his right,
just over arm's length away. But two more Shadows followed the first, toward that
gap, and the one Blackwind had evaded doubled back on itself, returning to a wolf-
like shape that was mostly gaping jaws and fangs like dark daggers.

Near Vithicar:

The spell didn't work. Master Darque resisted the impulse to lash out at the
nearest person, his bodyguard Tyre. To punish the non-responsible for the failure of
a spell was the mark of a minor magician; he would not stoop to that. But it should
have worked. It was such a *basic* scrying spell. He had been using it for
centuries, he could cast the damned thing in his sleep. This failure would have
driven a normal man to cursing, but he was always careful about that. As a half-
demon, his curses had power, and a competent magician did not waste power. Not
unless he was *really* angry.
He knew what the problem was, of course. That idiot down in Kurukar, messing
around with "dark powers." As if any human could hope to control them! Without a
heritage like his own, the powers would eat any fool who tried, and the sooner the
better. Necromancy! Master Darque's lip curled in a sneer. It had its uses, he had
done a little in that line himself, but it was ultimately a minor magical art.
Inherently messy, as anything involving human nature would always be.
He sighed, laid down the wand he had been using, and turned to look at Tyre.
The dwarf was expressionless, pointedly not paying attention to the spell-workings.
"We're going to have to do something about Kurukar," Master Darque said.
Tyre brightened at the prospect of action. "Good! When?"
     "Now."

                                 DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
                             Notes from the arena champ.

Greetings from the throne! Thanks to my guild mate and new Lord Protector
Rindel, I snuck in the back door to claim the title last week. My boss tells me I am
the 17th member of the guild to get his or her invite. He also tells me that I am
going to retire for now, but I may return to the arena in the future. Because of
that I cannot give my details, but he has agreed to let me tease you. So here are my
stats lowest to highest 7-8-9-10-15-18-20. You have probably noticed that they add
up to 87 points, so I have raised 3 of those stats. Also in my 28 arena fights and 2
tourney fights I have learned 51 skills and have achieved one Master, one Advanced
Expert and one Expert rating. As for my favorite weapon I only used it in 3 fights,
attacking with it 12 times, with one crit. I am allowed to say that my favorite learn
is attack skills.
I dedicate my last fight in Lapur to Thernys, he would have made a better
Duelmaster and Lord Protector than I, but the gods saw it differently. Rest in
Peace, brother and farewell Lapur.

Duelmaster and Lord Protector Gaeglin

                                      SPY REPORT

Welcome LAPUR. I, Olaf Modeen remember this place well. Many the fights have I
fought here. The celebrations, the disappointments... Woof! MID EARTH were a bunch
of dogs after CLUBS 'N CLONES got through with 'em! 3rd ain't so sweet as 1st!
Hmmmph! I always thought ZODIAC was an over-rated team and they proved it with a
0-0-0! Ya gotta be quick on yer feet! Keep your elbow off the table! Thrust!
Block out the pain! CLUBS 'N CLONES is now ranked 1st with a 4-1-0 turn. Some
people say I ramble too much, I don't say anything relevant. I repeat myself. I
ramble. Well CLAN CROW moved up 1, to 2nd. Welcome to LAPUR, NOT QUITE STARS! We
need more teams who can get a 4-1-1 their first time out! What's with LHISSON? He
actually beat STREET WALKERS' PINKY, and walked away with 21 more points from the
fight. Laughs were big at MID EARTH while they watched LHISSON clobber PINKY. She
lost 15 points and got bruised from objects thrown from the stands. See how the
Duelmaster challenged CLAN CROW's KILLIAN MCGUINES? That sort of initiative is how
he got where he is now. I'm sure LAPUR is excited about KILLIAN MCGUINES, the new
Duelmaster from CLAN CROW. (remember?) But when you've seen as many as I have... I
suppose you want to hear some rumors and dirty gossip about your fellow fighters?
Tough!
No matter the time or place, men will always duel. The most avoided team was
STREET WALKERS. In my day, no team with a 647-436-56 would scare me off! What's the
problem, CLAN CROW? What do people see in KILLIAN MCGUINES? His 14-9-1? CLAN CROW
ain't talkin', but he's got 120 points. DEATHWIND FORGE didn't quite know what to
make of a challenge he received from CONSTABLE ODO of TREKKERS, who is 19 points
below him. CONSTABLE ODO perhaps got his just desserts, seeing as he was killed by
DEATHWIND FORGE and ended up with 82 recognition points. I hate going to the effort
of writing about the kind of fights that MISTY RAIN gets in. She fights people like
STAINLESS SHAKER, 11 points below. I thought MISTY RAIN showed great skill and
promise when she won victory over STAINLESS SHAKER. All right, so I slept through
it! Big deal!
Warriors of LAPUR unite. You have only your games to lose! CONSTABLE ODO of
TREKKERS didn't know when to quit. When you've got a 10-10-0, that's a good sign.
Now he's dead. GELLIUS, with his forgettable 12-17-0, was slain by IRON IMPACTER in
a forgettable match. EQUESTORS didn't seem to mind very much. IRON IMPACTER had a
sure-fire victory when it challenged GELLIUS, 25 points below it. Was anyone really
surprised when GELLIUS bit it? JEHLCH larned his lesson (GILEAN YASUR taught it
well), and we right likely won't be seein' 'im fight any CLUBS 'N CLONES members with
the same gusto. Someone told VERUS that CLAN CROW never Bloodfeuded, that he'd have
an easy kill. Well, I'm sure whoever misled you is right sorry. How long have I
been here? I got people to see, places to go...
Who knows what the future holds for a warrior. More fights, there's no doubt.
Are you as tired of reading this as I am of writing it? Actually, I guess I'm
writing it before you read it. Oh, well. Remember--a good fighter needs both good
skills and good luck. Until next time,-- Olaf Modeen

Congratulations to new Lord Protectors GAEGLIN of MID EARTH and DEATHWIND FORGE of
CLAN CROW. Kudos to their managers. -- Ora et al

Aye, bloody good stuff n' all. But me be glad to see 'em go. Aye. -- Oremaster

See you soon on the sands. Prepare to bleeeeeeeeeeeeed. -- The Metal Mincers

How disgusting! -- Ora

That be me borgs! Aye. -- Oremaster

Rindel, Gaelglin, and that other fella that graduated recently, we at Clan Crow say
"Troid tobar agus maith a'dh" which mean "Fight well and good luck." Do Lapur proud!
-- Owsly and the rest O Clan Crow

Visionist -- That be quite nice O' you, Me think? -- Lucky Eireanne

Ora and Oremaster -- Finally someone to show me some respect around here. Much
appreciated. You and the Mrs. enjoy your Vacation. -- Deathwind Forge

Verus -- Since Ironie challenged you and it be one O' those fluke infirmary deaths
and not how we Clansmen see real death we be only going for the one bloodfued til we
win. If it be the first one it be done an over. -- Owsly
P.S. We at Clan Crow dannae be likin this new dyin system. It be remindin us O' the
new healthcare reform. Ye just cannae get good doctors these days and it be a poor
way ta lose a good fighter. No honor in dyin in the infirmary.

Ora and Oremaster -- Me thinks some R and R be good for the two O' ye. Mayhap ye
dannae be cussin each other so much and can get back ta winnin and fightin. Enjoy ye
time and O'l Owsly be lookin for ye return. -- Owsly

Lhisson -- What's everyone got against golems? We're people, too. I think. --
Gilean Yasur

Jehlch -- Please understand that we have nothing personal against you or your stable
mates. Daemonspawn tends to challenge first by looking at favorable style matchups,
then at the records of those matchups. Unfortunately, your teammates appeared the
most suitable to challenge in the applicable rankings, hence the multiple challenges.
-- Saryn

Jehlch -- BTW, nice fight. That really didn't go the way I'd hoped it would. --
Saryn

Menhoir -- Instead of headhunting, would you prefer I smack your butt instead? Trust
me, you're not so pretty that a couple of scars will ruin your appearance. -- Saryn

Rapid Adjustment -- You certainly made me work for that win! -- Daerelon

Eskes Penza -- It hardly seems fair: I beat you and yet you rose farther up the
rankings than I did!!! Still, I'm pretty sore after that one. I hope I'm feeling
better by the time I step out on the sands. -- Arylyn

Quark -- Hmm, well, didn't work that time. Maybe I should have stayed with the input
error? -- Butterfly

Locutus of Borg -- Not today, honey. I have a headache. -- Stormrider
P.S. And I don't trust blonds anyway.

Spicillus -- What the heck? Is this another input error? Hmm. Apparently not,
apparently it's a DELIBERATE bad weapon choice. I don't care for that. I want it

CHANGED. Ah, not your fault, though you exploited it well. -- Thunderbold the
Annoyed
P.S. Is the "c" in your name hard or soft?

Miley Virus -- With a name like that, you should be a manager. -- Maplesong

Capt. Antsy Pants -- Now, there's a visual! -- Hardwood

Liked the armor analysis a lot!

Saryn -- Totally understandable. But I'll do what I can to win instead. --
Stormrider

Daerelon -- The attitude is largely a product of circumstance, coupled with the
experience of seeing a lot of deaths in the twenty years I've been at this. -- Jorja
P.S. I don't expect others to match it, we each come to the event from a different
direction.

Our congratulations to Gaeglin and Deathwind Forge. -- Jorja and the Cardow Hunters
