                                    TEAM SPOTLIGHT

I thought I'd take a moment to introduce my losers...er, new team. I asked the
Commission for some godlings, but I guess they've got a twisted sense of humor.
Mel Gibstein: A washed-up performer who hates himself.
Bruce Tillis: As Obregon so elegantly put it, a stuttering bald man. He's a
tough guy, but he can't seem to string together a coherent sentence.
Jack BoOmhauer: Besides sending me a loser, the Commission saw fit to spell his
name wrong. Just as well. Another tough guy that's even more incoherent than Bruce.
Eric Hartman: This guy is just plain mean and sadistic.
Buck Norris: A backwoods redneck who thinks he's a Ka-ra-te man.

I'm sure the 4-1-1 start was a fluke...these guys really are pretty mediocre. I'm
looking forward to the good competition!

The Walkin' Dude

            + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ At the Gate of Hell ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ +

Blackwind rolled, starting to come back to his feet, but the Shadow was too
fast. As it pounced, its shape became less a wolf, more catlike, and claws like
scimitars extended from its feet. It was too close for sword work, but he had his
dagger in his offhand and struck at it quickly. No time to aim, but he should be
able to make it back off--
The dagger met no resistance, which unbalanced him further, and he rolled again.
The Shadow fastened claws in his arm, his shoulder, raked his ribs. His armor was no
more than wishful thinking against the assault, the claws were needles of deadly
cold. His dagger fell from fingers too cold to keep a grip. How was he supposed to
fight this thing? His arm and shoulder were numb, and he was finding it hard to
breathe.
     The Shadow was pouncing again.
A shout. A horizontal bar of light that swept above him, shattering the Shadow
when it struck. "Light, not steel," Redfox panted. "Can you get up?"
"I think so." Blackwind used his good hand to push himself to his feet, but it
was harder than it should have been. He looked at his ribs and his arm, expecting to
see torn armor soaked with blood. No tearing, no blood. No feeling in his arm.
"They attack with cold...." He shivered.
"Make light," Redfox said again. "That's all that stops them."
Blackwind tried. "Can't concentrate. Too cold...." He blinked, looking
around. The other four gladiators were all glowing, more like blobs of light in the
shadowy valley than physical people. Except that one of them was close to him and
BRIGHT, a pillar-- The Malcornishman reached out his good hand to that light, felt
Redfox grip it. HOT. But the heat was something he could concentrate on. Something
he could use to drive back the shadows.
He focused his mind, invoking light, calling on the warmth of human
companionship, felt warmth and life coming back into himself. Blackwind realized he
had dropped his sword, but he didn't bend down to get it. Wasn't sure he could get
back up again, for one thing, but right now, having the sword wouldn't help anyway.
He and Redfox had become separated from the other three gladiators, but as long
as they stayed together themselves, Blackwind figured they could handle the Shadows.
They had to.

"So, it's a barrier, a wall," Uncle Wolf mused, squinting at the air. He turned
his head to glance at Lord Malcorn, who was now standing ten feet away from him.
"Not quite an elemental, not quite a demon... how big is it? Can we separate and at
least one of us get around it while it blocks the other?"
Malcorn shrugged. "I don't like us dividing our forces, not even separating out
the gladiators to guard our backs, much less each of us moving and acting alone. But
if that's what it takes...." He moved a little farther to the side, keeping most of
his attention on the invisible entity that blocked their passage toward the Gate of
Hell.
Wolf resisted the urge to glance over his shoulder at the gladiators. They
would do the best they could, and it was even more dangerous for him to divide his
attention than his forces. And right now, his attention had to be on this Thing in
front of him. The rules governing air elementals in the Nether Realms were clear,
and it could not move without becoming visible, and perhaps not even then--so long as
he watched it closely. It was his attention that was pinning part of it to this
location, just as Malcorn's attention was pinning another part of it farther along.
How far could it stretch before Malcorn reached an end of it, or its patience
snapped? Air and fire elementals were not noted for their patience. Nor lesser
demons, come to that.
From the corner of his eye, Wolf saw that Malcorn had stopped moving sideways
and was angling forward, toward the Gate. He must have reached a corner. The old
shaman bared his teeth in a predator's grin and gathered all his will and knowledge
for whatever would happen next. Soon, now. Yes! A visible ripple in the Thing that
blocked their path. He hardened his concentration on it.
Words like hammer-blows. Malcorn wasn't shouting, but the words rolled out of
him like an avalanche. The power behind them-- Most people saw Lord Malcorn as big
and slow and friendly, ordinary, and maybe not too bright. They never guessed at
this side of the man. He had been born to hold the barrier that protected the normal
world from all the Realms Beyond. It was the gift and the responsibility of his
lineage, and he did it very well.
The Thing rippled again, the visible Gate beyond it dancing as through heat
waves, and something... cracked. The demon began to condense out of it. Spidery
limbs, fragile-looking iridescent wings, huge, glassy eyes. The kind of demon Wolf's
own teach had called a Mirage-Flitter. A natural choice, perhaps, if one wanted to
meld a demon with an air elemental, but the Flitter was weak in its own identity. A
pest rather than a dire threat. It shrieked, a thin keening at the upper edge of
audibility. Sharp as broken glass, but wild--whatever had been done to bind this
Flitter to the elemental had driven it mad.
More words from Malcorn, surrounded by the crackle and ring of shattering glass.
Faintly bluish fluid trickled down the Flitter's wings as it struggled to pull free
of the elemental that must have seemed like a prison to it. It shrieked again,
flailing with its bleeding wings.
Wolf lifted his sword, concentrated his power, and skewered the mad thing
through the heart. He was already in motion when he saw the trap that lurked
behind/within the Flitter, and it was much too late to stop.

                             Notes from the arena champ.

Aye Hullooo Lapur! Me be the 4th Crow Clansman ta hold the throne and me want
ta give thanks ta O'l Gaeglin for coughin it up for me. Me always dreamed O' given a
Duelmaster a loss on his way oot the door! Thanks for makin me dreams come true! Me
feel a bit sorry for the rest O' me clansmen as they have some big shoe ta fill and a
long trip ta make. Smack, Lucky even that pompas arse Owsly always be bitchin aboot
and now me. Me only wear a size 8 1/2 but they dannae be easy ta fill rest assured!
Me don't know how long me be holdin down the throne nor how long before me graduate
as me have never been much for keepin up on such things, but me do intend ta hang on
ta me spot for as long as possible. As for now well me wish ta propose a toast! Ta

Your Duelmaster,
Killian

                                      SPY REPORT

I can't believe the violence in LAPUR! I still haven't told Mom I'm writing
Spyreports. She'd have a cow! Well, here we go... Like, CLUBS 'N CLONES had to be
so embarrassed when they got kicked off #1 spot by CLAN CROW! Way to go CLAN CROW!
I don't wanna hurt anybody's feelings or anything, but STREET WALKERS really goofed
with their 0-0-0. The guys at WAR PARTY like really pulled together to get a 2-1-0
this turn, moving up by 4. Cut this out and put it in your scrapbooks, TREKKERS!
'Cause they got 5-0-0 and moved up to 3rd! MVP award for STAINLESS SHAKER? METAL
MINCERS' proud of it after beating GILEAN YASUR and getting 23 points. Talk about
yer major upsets! GILEAN YASUR's match with STAINLESS SHAKER cost him a loss of 17
points! This Duelmaster is like something else! KILLIAN MCGUINES stopped INCONEL
INDENTER dead in his tracks! I hear the top team insists all their warriors get nine
hours sleep. They want photogenic fighters for PR photos.
I gotta admit I haven't been in "deep con caves" with any spies. Really, I just
wing this stuff. The warriors of TRAIL OF TEARS must be getting lonely. They were
the most avoided team. Do you guys know something that I don't? I don't know what
MID EARTH's been doing. They certainly haven't been accepting many fights from TRAIL
OF TEARS, that's fer sher. Like, is BUTTERFLY popular, or what? She was challenged
the most in all of LAPUR! She's got a 17-21-2, is that good?
Man, all these warriors dying and killing each other! Don't you guys ever give
it a break? I see REGULUS got killed by MISTY RAIN of TRAIL OF TEARS. Now I want to
see some serious Bloodfeud action out there! What if they had a fight and nobody
showed up? I'd be out of a job, that's what!!!
Remember, blood on a purple robe may stain. Soak it in cold water, and hand
wash. I'm getting tired of writing this stuff, so I'm calling it quits. I had a fun
time, see you later-- Debby Tonte

All -- The Consortium Elders were quite astounded and disappointed when the DM29
Newsletter reported a 20+ DOWNCHALLENGE by a Metal Mincer (Iron Impacter). Sadly,
the despicable feat led to an arena death. (We pologize to The Equestors.) We shall
be addressing this with our management team in Lapur to assure that it never happens
again. Hopefully they will be able to show it was a clerical issue, rather that a
dastardly deep downchallenge death. The auditors are leaving as we speak. -- The
Consortium Elders

Oh, Oremaster, Love, you did a bad thing. I will help you any way I can. -- Ora

Nay, Luv; this'n ole miner hain't doin'no downchallengen. Nay. -- Oremaster

The Metal Mincers apologize to The Equestor Clan. We do not know how the deep
downchallenge happened. We are truly sorry for the death of your warrior. May he
fight well in That Great Arena In The Sky. -- Ora and Oremaster

Quark -- Watch out for big bad 'borgs wherever you go. Hahahahahah. (sly, slightly
evil grin) -- Inconel Indenter

Misty Rain -- I give you credit for a great challenge. Kudos to your boss. I hate
you both! -- Stainless Shaker

Gellius and Equestors -- It is true that I desired a win, but I didn't want a death.
Mea Culpa. -- Iron Impacter

For those interested, pre-fave announcement, Iron Impacter looked like this: 11(+1)-
15(+1)-7-15(+1)-17-16-7(1) mode skill ST. Good endu/normal dmg. 18/129/6 w/BS,
14/85/0 w/SS, 1/3/1 w/DA; 1.85 skill learn rate; 14-11-1 arena record. -- Ora and
Oremaster

Congrats ta another Metal Mincer for makin it ta the end! Looks like ye be impactin
some Iron elsewhere for some time. -- Owsly and the rest O' the Clan.

Ghost Constable Odo -- Deathwind Forge be suprisen us too! He be O' bit anal and
quirky but he pulls a suprise oot O' nowhere every so often. His KD has never
changed and yet you be his victim. Not sure what happens from here, guess me and the
Clan be visitin ye grave ta pay our respects. -- Owsly and the rest O' the Clan.

Me be guessin that since ABs be havin so much trouble over the last year or so
everybody wants ta try and graduate one now. Forge be a whole lata hassel but he be
our first AB AND a grad. We clansmen would pat ourselves on the back but we cannae
stand the guy. Me point is graduatin an AB not be so bad as me thought. -- Owsly

War Party -- Nice team spotlight! Welcome ta Lapur! May our blades never cross and
if they do may we each survive ta kill someone else! -- Owsly

Thunderbold -- Me sorry aboot tryin ta bury yer head in the sand, laddie, for a
moment there me thought ya might one O' those long legged birds that can't fly and me
be tryin ta help ya oot. -- Batton Ms'Kelley

Gaeglin -- You Lad be a swell fella. Good Luck ta ye in the future. Not sure it be
in ye plans O' not but thanks just the same for given me the throne! That be mighty
kind O ye! -- Killian

Oremaster -- The match between Gellius and Iron Impacter highlights a glaring problem
with setting up the matches. The recognition difference of 25 means the fighter with
the higher recognition almost always wins. This problem starts when the recognition
difference reaches the mid-teens. I had an argument a long time ago with another
player about this. At the time, I had about 500 fight turns in a box. I went over
every one of them and charted wins against recognition difference. I lost this info
and more when I moved from California to Texas. But I do remember the fight results
get extremely lopsided, 90%+, when the recognition difference gets over 15 or pretty
close. As for the kill, Gellius could not take much punishment. I am surprised he
lasted this long. -- Spartacus

Daerelon -- A graceful name, but not enough to bring you a win, nor was your slender
experience an adequate balance. I was a little annoyed, you see. I don't like
people LOOMING over me. -- Butterfly

Batton Ms'kelley -- How annoying that you should live up to your name. --
Thunderbold, still struggling to live up to mine

Viedras -- Ow! That broken glass embedded in your club was a nasty trick. --
Stormrider

B. Furious -- Thanks, I've been. Often. -- Hardwood

Arylyn -- You people with elvish blood just make me so MAD sometimes. That way you
have of making everyone else look like a clumsy clod, it really sticks in socks. --
Maplesong

Our congratulations to Iron Impacter. -- Jorja and the Cardow Hunters
