"Everyone gather 'round for a second." Bahram's deep voice intoned. "As you
know, for the past year or so, ever since Senchin left, none of us have seen the
sand. We've built a life here in Lapur, to be sure. It took everything I had from
mining in Cliffhome to buy this old farm, and it took everything we had to eek a
living from it. We've worked hard and..."
Darius broke in impatiently, "Yeah, we know. We were there, remember! Senchin
couldn't cope with losing his 'warriors', disappeared, and now we're all farmers,
yay!! Is this why you interrupted my fence building? I'm just here until something
better comes along or I save up enough to travel to Mordant, where the real action
is!"
"Shut it, Darius!" Magdala leveled her gaze at him, "Bahram's just summarizing
for the sake of our readers! Let him finish!"
"It's okay, Darius is right. That's the point." Bahram continued, "I'm
startin' to get that itch. I wanna feel the weight of my armor! The heft of my
weapon! The cheers of the crowd!! I wanna fight!!! After all this time, I feel
that hunger growing! The hunger to test my mettle against another's metal."
"Woo Hoo!!" Darius whooped, "It's about time!"
Iryana spoke up, "All the other teams are better equipped, better trained,
better funded, and have decades of experience on us. How are we supposed to win
against those odds?"
"Win?" Bahram put an arm on Iryana's shoulder, "Look, little lady, I don't
think you understand what I'm saying. I just want to go out there and pound some
skulls, if I can walk out of the arena, that's a win. Anything more-- that's just
gravy. If you can survive and maybe beat your opponent 4 times out of 10, well
you're top notch as far as I'm concerned. Maybe I just like the punishment, but
there;s something about it that draws me back, and it ain't for everyone."
Tane spoke up, "I'm in, but... can we at least find a healer of our own, or even
just a seamstress? Forget the other warriors; it's the cleanliness of the arena
hospital I have nightmares about. Someone who doesn't fight in the arena this time?"
Magdala look at Bahram, "I think we've all been feeling that same itch. The
farm is great and we need to keep working it, but it just doesn't..." Magdala paused
searching for the words-- addressing the whole team she continued, "Well, you guys
know what I trying to say. It's time to get out the whetstone and the lard, we've
got a lot of work to do getting our weapons and armor back into fighting condition."
As they went back to their respective tasks, a quiet sense of excitement filled
the air like that tingling-static feel just before an electrical storm moves in.
They all knew they risked death in the arena, but once you acquired taste for it,
it's hard to put it down for good.

DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
Duelmaster again? Makes sense. But I surely did not want to kill Menhoir. It
really wasn't necessary. I certainly wanted to win, but, not THAT! I apolgize to
Visionist and Mid Earth.
Now that I have apologized, I will probably make Mr. Visionist mad. I had
planned all along, at this time, to stop fighting and abdicate the throne as I have
maxed in FE as prep for the upcoming tournament. I am continuing with my plan. That
means that not only will I not be DM, but that Mid Earth will probably not get the
opportunity to avenge Menhoir. Another mea culpa.
That said, the throne is open. Good luck to those of you who battle for it.

SPY REPORT
It's me, The Unknown Spymaster, back to give you this week's Spy Report. Sit
back in your seats and we'll have more fun than a barrel of Zontanis. It looks like
the guys(?) at TREKKERS had a good week as they went 5-0-0 to put them in 5th place.
I guess steroids help! Hey everybody, watch out for DARIUS, who flew up 24 points in
the rankings after mashing INCONEL INDENTER like a melon. Keep your eye on this guy.
And falling like a basher in the top ten was INCONEL INDENTER, who dropped 21 points
after a disappointing (to say the least) bout with DARIUS. Well, if ya don't shows
up at the laundromat, ya can'ts wash yer clothes. BERYLLIUM BUFFER did not fight
this week so its title was forfeit. In front of all the crowds, DR. STRANGELEAF took
the Duelmaster's crown for his own. I give the bum two weeks. Can you believe they
are paying me 10 gold to deliver this stuff?
But enough of that bunch, let's get on to the wimps who like to avoid battle!
Did you hear that MID EARTH was most avoided team this week? Well, knowing the
personal hygiene of MID EARTH's warriors, I'm not surprised! For those of you who
like math, try this one: MID EARTH + Weapons That go Boom = METAL MINCERS + Avoid
City. Well dang howdy, but if challenges were votes, DR. STRANGELEAF would be
president. Although it may be a contest he doesn't want to win.
Being a spy is great--other people die and you spend the rest of the day
drinking to their memory. Better tanked than dead! Here's some advice: warriors
with little wit and will may encounter problems on the trail to the Isle.
I think I had better cut this one short. It's been nice chatting to those of
you whom I have not offended yet. Okay, so I may not be the world's best comedian,
but then you guys aren't the world's best warriors. And remember, you can pick your
friends and you can pick your--(loud boos), oh, you've heard that one already!-- The
Unknown Spymaster

Menhoir, Visionist -- I truly regret the death of a great Mid Earth warrior. He was
a good guy. -- Beryllium Buffer
Aye, Visionist, me'n me Mincers bea sad 'n sorry. Aye. -- Oremaster
Priore -- Two would have been a disaster. Stay away from me! We don't need no more
dead Mid Earthers. -- Inconel Indenter
P.S. Did I annoy you too? (smirk)
Commission -- Graduate me! Whatsadeal?! I'm a made borg. I got my bones. --
Inconel Indenter
Sweet Birch -- You let me win that, did you? Trying to get me up too high in the
ranks, eh? You Birchers were always a devious lot. -- Bismuth Bender
Sulu -- Nothin' personal, just somethin' I like about you Trekkers. -- Platinum Punch
Spaceman Spliff -- Apparently you are too much for me. I am beginning to believe
that everyone is. -- Steel Sharpener
No, no, Sharpie! You can do it! Hang in there. -- Ora
By the way, Oremaster, Luv, please put the g.d. lid DOWN on the commode when you are
finished! -- Ora (hugs and kisses)
Visionist -- I wholly understand the "catching up" business. I'm trying to do it
myself, today. Well, tonight. -- Jorja
P.S. Well, okay, not so much "catching up" as "picking up and going on from here."
Bismuth Bender -- You have bent me into a pretzel, and I don't like it. According to
my name, I should be tall, straight, and slim. I do manage the straight and medium
tall, but, as an orc, "slim" is, um, more difficult. Still, I'm sure that pretzels
aren't mentioned in that description anywhere. -- Sweet Birch
Gowron -- Think of me as a noggin-knocker. I'm good at that. -- Hardwood
Verus -- You left me feeling veritably battered. Ouch. Good fight. -- Stormrider
Khan -- If I'd realized you commanded a rainstorm, I would have avoided you. --
Grassfire
Cincius -- Huh. They tell me I have to be careful what I say to you, but I'm too
woozy for that. Thing is, I'm named after a horse (and a good horse he was), and it
seemd to me that you're named after a cinch (yeah, Jorja says not, but maybe there's
some common root?), and you surely cinched me. Ow. -- Claybank
Lapur -- Well I have come to the conclusion it is time to end my participation in
Duel. There are a couple reasons for this. When I opened turn 666, I saw that
Rutilius had been bloodfeuded. I could not remember who he had killed. So I tried
to find my last turn. It took a while. It seems that the turn had been filed away
with the anaysis I had done on my bashers. Not only had it been misfiled it had not
even been opened. To make things worse I found another turn with it that had not
been opened. So now on my worktable I had an opened turn, 666, and two unopened
turns 665 and 664. I realized that this was no way to play.
Then there was the loss of most of the notes and information I had compiled over the
years. When I finished my basher look at, I realized that there was no way I was
going to be able to reconstruct what I lost. Managers who had helped, in and out of
game, are no longer playing, the personal ads with info were gone as was the
compilation by three or four old managers known as the Enchiridion. All gone. I had
started to go through the turn sheets I had for my lungers but the old "honey-do"
list took precedence and having gone through about half those turns the rest have
been pushed aside and gathering dust for the last eight weeks or so.
Playing this way is not really fair to myself or to the other participants so that is
why I have decided to end my participation. Also, age may have todo with this as I
am getting ready to receive my first Social Security payment in October.
Good luck to those of you who are continuing. -- Spartacus
Fare well. You will be missed. -- the Editor
