True to its name, there's typically a warm fire blazing merrily in the hearth. The drinks, despite (or perhaps due to) their questionable origin, are cheap and wenches bawdy. Better fare can be had at the Warty Toad. But you get more for your mark here and the atmosphere's more relaxed. The Warty Toad is more for those who 'lack the wit to wield their weapon' go to boast about their most recent conquest. Bahram raises his mug, "Congratulations on your wins, Tane, Iryana! Gowron's not having much luck with his challenges, eh, Tane!" he chuckles. "And, Iryana, glad somebody won against those Mincers." "Those borgs are... are... inhuman!" Darius exclaims. "I thought I was fast! Did you see Beryllium Buffer move!?!" Tane, not missing a chance poke at the inflated ego of his cocky, young stable mate, chides, "I didn't see a thing, except how fast you dropped your weapon and surrendered." Magdala gives a mischievous grin, "If you spent as much time at practice as you do at the spa, you might be able to take a hit or two." Leaning back and propping her feet on the table she continues, "We could take a lesson from those Cardow Hunters. Hitting them just seems to piss 'em off." "I don't want to learn to get hit! I want to..." But Darius's wants are forgotten as a cheer arises when the most recognizable warriors in the city enter. Current Duelmaster and recent tournament victor, Beryllium Buffer walks in, "Make room by the fire, folks. Beryllium don't hold its heat like blood and bone." Inconel Indenter and Steel Sharpener, looking like two mammoth bodyguards, follow him in. Darius whispers to his stable mates, "I have an idea." He stands up and shouts, "Mincers! Over here." The others share puzzled glances but give a resigned shrug as they prepare to meet their unexpected guests. Beryllium Buffer looks up and grins as he strides over to greet his recent opponent. "Darius! Glad to see you survived the infirmary. That place can try a man's mettle as surely as the sands!" Darius gives a forced chuckle and begins to rub his right arm. "Ah, no worries here, I've always been a quick healer. Here, have a seat," Darius says as he stands and offers his chair. "Wouldn't be the first I've given up to you." He grins. "So what brings the top team here? I figured you more as The Warty Toad sort," Magalda says with another of her trademarked grins. "We don't frequent either establishment with much regularity, but with Inconel's graduation and the team's success at the tournament, we thought a night out to be appropriate. It's good for business to see and be seen from time to time. Beside Bismuth Bender's over at the Warty Toad looking to take on all comers." Taking a swallow of his wine Inconel Indenter spits, "Bah! Never could develop a taste for this foul brew!" Bahram motions toward Iryana, "Iryana, show 'em how we do it." Iryana pulls out a small pouch, takes a tablet from it and drops it into the cups of the three 'borgs. "Swirl it around and give it a minute for best effect," Iryana instructs. Lord Protector Inconel does as Iryana suggests, looks to his team mates, gives a shrug, and takes another swig. He slams his mug down with a laugh, "Well, I'll be! You must be a alchemist if you can turn that swill into this sweet nectar!" Iryana laughs and takes a sip of her own, "It's just a mixture of fennel, nutmeg, and one or two other ingredients. But it's makes all the difference." While small talk leads to shared stories and friendly banter, Darius encourages his opponent, Beryllium, to partake in more than his share of Open Hand's spiced wine. After a while Beryllium begins to show the effects of inebriation and Darius leans in to pry what secrets he can from wine-loosened lips. "How do you do it? I've seen few move so fast, and none with such skill." "I've ssheen you fight, and you're not shho bad," Beryllium slurs. "But why do you wear (hic) all thhat armor?" "I got sent to the infirmary even with the armor, I don't want to know what would have happened without it. I mean, maybe if I were made of metal..." "I tellll u wut mite have (hic) happen-ened. You mite sshtilll be due... duel... winning!" "Or I might be having this drink with Ahringol" "Let meee guessh, every time you win (hic), you get the firsst hit, and don't stop till it's over. Every time you get hit, you lose, right!?" "Yeeeaah," Darius reluctantly agrees as, like a mouse getting his first whiff of cheese, he starts to get a hint of the seasoned warrior's logic. "Ssho, why bother with armor? (hic) It just shlows you down, makes you an eashy target. The armor doeshn't protect you! It just makes you more likely to get hit!" To emphasize his point, Beryllium moves to slap his hand on Darius's chest, misjudges the distance, and ends up using Darius to stop himself from hitting the floor. "Maybe you can take more hits with it, but, is that really what you want? To take more hits?! Move fast, don't give 'em a chance, THAT'S how you do it! THAT'S how you win!!" In his excitement, Beryllium, now precariously perched on his chair, loses his battle with gravity. From his new, more stable position on the floor he adds, "But, if you're going to lose, save yourself a few hits and lose fast!" Inconel and Steel Sharpener disengage themselves from their respective conversations, to assist their inebriated friend to a mostly vertical position, "Time to call it night. C'mon Beryllium, Ora was expecting us hours ago." With a smile they thank their hosts and start to make their way towards the door, Beryllium dangling between them. Leaving a pensive Darius to ponder the wisdom he was able to glean from his opponent. "Did you hear what he said? The more I think about it, the more it makes sense. I mean, it's risky, but the whole operation's risky, right?" "You fight naked if you want, I'm quite fond of my armor. Old bones don't heal like young bones." A tired Bahram yawns. "Besides, I'm not looking to make a name for myself, I'm quite content with obscurity. And just so you know, the cost of this soiree is coming out your share of the purse. Outside, the three 'borgs are heading home. Beryllium now walking unassisted and seemingly unaffected by the mass quantities of wine imbibed. Inconel turns to him, "What were you playing at in there? I know it wasn't the alcohol." "I knew what the kid was up to, I just wanted to give him a few pointers. What can I say? I like the kid. Besides, if it makes him a better warrior, well, it's better for all of us in the long run, isn't it?" Inconel chuckles and pats his friend on the back, "Beryllium, you're a warrior and scholar, a warrior and a scholar." * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===FREE BLADES REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 9 ZUKAL (turn 683): TIGHT BLOUSE of HOT STUFF (Papa Bear, mgr.) But, borg or not, I am going to write. Let's see. That makes my fourth. I lost to Gilean Yasur (ST) way back when. Later I defeated Priore (BA) and Menhoir (SL), and then unintentionally killed Menhoir (SL) in my own repeat TV challenge. (Oremaster still owes you, Visionist, for that; especially for the unavailability of the bloodfeud.) I do have a lot of tournment fights under my belt. Oh-3, 4-3-1, 4-3-1, 11-3, and the just recent Mailer. I cannot talk about what I did there yet. (Still waiting for that package!) So I do have a pile of FE to add to my 15 arena fights. I have to give former Duelmaster Darius of Open Hand credit. He actually predicted this outcome in his just past DM Column. Kudos! Personally, I was not so sure I would beat him. He is a fine, fine warrior in his own right. And I am glad to see my brethren borg, Bismuth Bender continued his unbeaten arena streak. I sincerely doubt he can continue it much longer in Lapur. We Metal Mincers look forward to the replacement for 21-11-20-15-9-3-5 Inconel Indenter. It has to be better, but it surely will not be as much fun as Inconel was as a brother borg. No way! Dr, Strangeleaf or Darius-- one of you gets the title shot. Good luck to you. Beryllium Buffer, DMIV SPY REPORT It's me, The Unknown Spymaster, back to give you this week's Spy Report. Sit back in your seats and we'll have more fun than a barrel of Zontanis. Say good-bye to CARDOW HUNTERS, as they are pushed from the coveted top team spot by the MID EARTH stable. Coming up with a solid 3-2-1 outing, MID EARTH has advanced 3 places in the rankings. Hey everybody, watch out for ULPHOR, who flew up 30 points in the rankings after mashing STORMRIDER like a melon. Keep your eye on this guy. Ya know, some days it doesn't pay to walk out on the sands. NERO was subdued by PUB O'CONNOR and drops 21 points. Well, everybody's pal BERYLLIUM BUFFER moved its record to 13-3-2 by defeating DARIUS in the Duelmaster's Title Bout and gaining 12 recognition points. Advice to bashers--never force anything, just get a bigger halberd! Here is other news that is of note. And hey, kiddies, those of you who didn't avoid TREKKERS, please raise you hand. Wow. Does LAPUR really have that many liars? Okay, so I may not be funny, but catch MID EARTH's act in the arena. Those acrobats seem to be fairly deft at running from TREKKERS. Well just about everybody wants a piece of GRASSFIRE, who was this week's most challenged warrior. Death is kind of like a new puppy: he's always around wanting to play. (Ha Zontani, how's that for a wise saying?). Carrion Bird Cinematic Humor: STORMRIDER II: THE REMATCH. Ask not the elves for counsel, for they will say both yes and no. Silly buggers, eh? Well, that wasn't too bad; Alarond told me that the people in LAPUR have no sense of humor. Or maybe that they were senseless. Well, there goes another Spy Report. Good luck in next week's fights. First let me say that it is good to see that Bismuth Bender and Beryllium Buffer made it back safe from The Mailer. I don't know why Oremaster feels he has to put their lives in jeopardy like that. -- Ora Ora, ye ditz! This be Duelmasters, ye know? Not yon beach party. Gotts fite! Aye. -- Oremaster Hah! Proud 'o me Buffer! Aye. -- Oremaster Iryana -- You had too much skill and experience for me. Everyone else may be welcoming you guys back, but I say "Phlbbbbtttt!"! -- Steel Sharpener Nero -- Got me there! Good challenge, You Bum! Outstyled me! Kudos to that dastardly manager of yours. -- Platinum Punch Darius -- I was worried, challenging your style, but I really wanted that title. I must have had the skills in the bank. Maybe we will try it again? -- Bismuth Bender Bahram -- Style to style. Now we know! -- Bismuth Bender Cardow Hunters -- Five-0-2!?! Got me 'borgs arunnin' scairt! Aye. -- Oremaster Darius -- I just have to say that was a really nice DM Column. And you sure called it! -- Ora Heinous Beast -- You killed my Inconel Indenter!? Well, he deserved it for going to The Dark Arena in the first place. I told him! -- Ora Bismuth Bender -- It's funny, I gained more recognition being hammered by the undefeated Bismuth Bender, than you gained by winning. People come up to me on the street, "Hey, didn't you get your arse handed to you by what's-his-name?" -- Bahram Beryllium Buffer -- So, I was keeping your seat warm for you, after all. Or perhaps, it's all part of my intricate strategy, muah ha ha! -- Darius Claybank -- You Cardow Hunters are definitely more dangerous when you're desperate. Me, I get desperate, I call it a day. But you guys just push it to the brink! Kudos! -- Magala Gowron -- While I'm always happy to see a fan of the team, I'm beginning to think your interest is more than casual. -- Tane Steel Sharpener -- See, if I wouldn't have sent you to the infirmary, you may have never learned about that secret admirer. You're welcome. -- Iryana Cardow Hunters -- Congrats on the 5-0 and point gain last turn! -- Open Hand Ora -- Hmm, a husband with a back problem... I know how those can (sometimes) come about. Still, we wish him well. -- Jorja Inconel Indenter -- You're welcome. Anything to get you moving. -- Sweet Birch Ora -- Probably, but I haven't needed one since I moved here, so... who knows? -- Jorja Darius -- Yes, well, can't we all, sometimes. -- Stormrider Tane -- Next time you want to smack my butt, try it in private. I might push you down, but I won't take your head off. -- Grassfire Open Hand -- Thank you. I'm revolving possibilities as I recover from the tourney. -- Jorja I "dispatched" M. Chardinee? As in, "sent him off elsewhere to do something other"? Right. To the Infirmary to be resurrected, I guess. Should it count as a kill if the kill-ee comes springing right back to life? I mean, the Chardinee, actually waved at the crowd from the stretcher when the orderlies were carrying him out! -- Stormrider Anshin -- Good fight, I guess. I must've been off my stroke to take two minutes. -- Sweet Birch Khan -- What, another death? I wasn't trying to do that! Really weird. I will, of course, be available for bloodfeud. -- Grassfire Magdala -- I don't know why the steward found that hard to believe. After all, you're a redhead, right? And redheaded women inspire me. -- Claybank The Userous Merchant tried to charge me for just LOOKING at his wares. I call that beyond too much. So I pounded him a little. -- Hardwood LAST WEEK'S FIGHTS RAEDE was butchered by HEINOUS BEAST in a 1 minute Dark Arena fight.
